Kate, Wills, and Harry attend Spencer Wedding

Saturday, June 9, 2012

Sometimes, when you are used to a certain thing arranged in one way you resist it when you see it another way.  I thought at first that was why I wasn't thrilled with this ensemble but when Kate recycled the blue jacket last year, I liked it.  Not as much as the original time she wore it with a crisper color underneath, but I liked it.

Recycle done right:

Recycle not done so right:

Today, at the wedding of William's cousin -- on the Spencer side-- Kate recycled the Jenny P she wore to the polo match in Santa Barbara, the striking Katherine Hooker she wore to the Order of the Garter last year, and the hat she wore to the Epson Derby--again, last year.  Individually, I loved both the hat and the coat, but I never warmed to the Santa Barbara dress. If anything, I have soured towards it. That flower pattern is dreadful.

So right off the bat I am prejudiced, but if I had to make an impartial case against this I would start by saying she is mixing an item that works for an occasion as fancy as the Order of the Garter, with a dress she wore to a polo game. That seems to clash. Plus, the coat has detailing that clashes with the pattern of the dress. The dress has a high neckline, and the coat has a v-shaped opening, which is better complimented by a lower neckline, as seen when she initially wore the coat. That dress just doesn't go with anything, and it certainly doesn't go with this coat.  Gosh, the more I write the more I dislike it.  But, I still loved seeing Kate, and that coat, and that hat.

Frankly, she should have recycled the whole outfit from last year, and switched the hat up if she wanted to change the pace.

Verdict is a no on this one.

  1. Harsh critique, but necessary. I actually loved what she wore, the hat, the dress, the coat, just not all put together. As you pointed out, the coat has embroidery that clashed with the busy pattern on the dress and that hat, lovely as it is, is a color that simply doesn't go with either the dress or the coat.

I'm also starting to get tired of those nude colored pumps. I understand they're an easy color to put together with different outfits, but to see the same exact pair of shoes recycled so many times is simply boring. Kate better watch out or she'll start to be known as the royal with the nude patent leather pumps, the queen being the royal with the black patent leather pumps...

    1. Yes, sometimes I get on a roll. :( I don't know what to think of the pumps. I am a serious shoe transgressor in that I wear the same pair over and over, but perhaps a little more variety from the Duchess of Cambridge would be good.

  2. My first objection was that the coat is a little shorter than the dress or the dress is a little longer than the coat - depending on your point of view. That was enough to nix this one for me. I liked the dress when she first wore it and I liked the coat last year but together, not so much. I think the hat was an odd color choice with the coat and dress. I personally would have worn a light gray shoe instead of the nude.

    1. I am glad to hear you say that about teh hat! I love the hat, but the color is too warm for the dress! I flt like I had been so negative I needed to stop, so I didn't mention it. Sigh, I guess Kate was tired after all the Jubilee events...

  3. I am usually not a critic of hers....ever. How I love remembering last summer's tour and how fun it was watching her outfits....media swearing she had no dresser or stylist. This year there have been several outfits that have been horrendous and it makes me sad. What's happened? Too much pressure? I dunno. With that said, I never *really* liked this dress....why recycle this one? But I love the coat and hat and clutch. The hat was from one of my all-time fav looks...back in the day....sigh! But to leave on a positive note....she still looks gorgeous!

    1. Well, we all have days where we put something together and then at the end of the day we are left with a question mark. Even Kate. It wasn't bad on a terrible scale. It wasn't like the maid of honor dress from Confessions of a Shopaholic. :) But... It didn't work for me.

  4. Well, that dress isn't my favorite, but I don't mind it all that much. I like today's ensemble, I think particularly because the coat (as opposed to the dress) is what's really on display. I think she works really hard at things like this to stay in the background (no one wants to upstage a bride), so these recycled pieces work well for that...I guess if we're critiquing her, then at least we're not saying how much she stole the show on someone else's day! As for the shoes, I kind of love that she wears them over and over. As a gal on a budget, I like to see how people who have fashion sense that I admire make their wardrobes really stretch.

  6. I totally agree. The flowers of the dress are really "too much" underneath a coat with such details. The colors are similar but they don't match perfectly. Love the recycle but not this one :-(
She is gorgeous as usual by the way.

  7. I really liked the dress, but this time it didn't look so good.I wonder what comes to her mind when she decides to recycle clothes. I mean, I love her attitude, but it's only the wish of not outshining the bride, in this case?

    1. Yes, I think it is always a thoughtful gesture for her to recycle an outfit when attending a wedding. She will still garner press, but it is tipping her hat to the bride. Frankly, given how often she is expected to show up in a new outfit, it must be a bit of a relief to dip into her closet. Kate has always been frugal in that sense.

  8. And the pumps, I'm really starting getting tired of them. They're gorgeous, but she could have choosen something else. But I agree with you, maybe she's just tired because of the jubilee, I mean, I would be!!!

  9. Thanks for calling it like it is, even when we LOVE Kate!

  10. Jane, I so agree with you. When I first saw it, I thought it was just me that thought it was all so wrong in so many ways.

  11. To follow on from my comments directly above, what I should have stated is that each item on its own is fine, just not in that combination.

  12. I don't really like the dress, but even if I had it isn't right with the coat. Well, we all makes mistakes.
