Thames River Pageant: Kate in Red McQueen

Sunday, June 3, 2012

This might be the only time I will say that the event outshines Kate, but when the event is so historically charged nothing and no one can steal the show.  An estimated 1.2 million people lined the Thames to watch a world record beating flotilla of over 1,000 boats celebrate the Queen's 60 years on the throne. As was the case with the Royal Wedding, this is another place where the monarchy shines in its ability to put on an historically rich show heavy with pomp and circumstance.  Obviously, different from the wedding in solemnity, nevertheless, the excitement and sheer wow factor were through the roof.

This quick video gives you a sense of the event and has some nice shots of the royals:

The Queen looked spectacular for today's event!  I loved that unusual hat and the draping of the shawl around her dress. Gieven what a tremendous queen she has been, it seems appropriate that her jubilee be feted in such a manner.

Kate wore Alexander McQueen in bright red.  The two piece suit had lots of McQueen markings and this ID was no shocker.  She carried a red clutch and a Strathearn tartan scarf, which she did wear at one point.  I am sure you remember from her trip to Scotland for Zara's wedding--or simply from the announcement on the morning of April 29th--that Kate is the Countess of Strathearn.

One thing has been established, Kate likes the hat partially turned up look.  This topper is bright and very, very red.  I am pretty neutral about the ensemble.  She looked great, as usual.  It is certainly bright, though. Looking more closely at the hat:

I don't know...the flowers might just be a little much for me... Or it is the unrelenting red. Not my favorite hat, but still nice and festive.

Tonight, I am just bowled over by the history and the excitement.  Britain was at its finest this afternoon.

Kate's family had been invited to participate by the Queen, and they were photographed aboard another vessel clearly having a great time.

William and Kate looked great, the Queen looked fabulous, London was shining despite the rain, the Thames was fit to kill, it was a perfect royal afternoon.

  1. She looked great and wore the dress better than the 2 others who've worn it. I think the hat needed something else in it besides red though. HMQ looked amazing and so nice to see her smiling! Also nice to see the Middleton's! Nice post!

  2. Great post, photos and video's, definitely a fabulous day. I love that the queen wore a new hat and wrap, I wonder if Kate's taste is inspiring the new look. I love the photo of her with the umbrella and Jubilee symbol, my other fav is the last one. I like that the dress gives her a shape, several of her daily wear tops do not define her great shape. Also, nice to see her family.

Anyone think it is time for some shoes that aren't neutral.

    1. I still kind of like the neutral. I don't know, it just seems to go with everything.

  3. It did give her shape, I agree. It was a pretty dress. I don't know why people complained about the color.
