The Queen and Her Kings: Official Christening Photos Released

Thursday, October 24, 2013

Where to begin today? We will start with the official christening photos released this evening at 10pm. They are lovely! I have led with my favorite; the one of just the three Cambridges. Kate is absolutely stunning in these photos, she looks so, so happy and content. William, whose smile often seems strained or at least polite but reserved, is genuinely glowing in this one. Georgie, the center of attention, even seems to be cheering. It is a great shot!

Of course, the photo that everyone was waiting for in terms of historical significance was the "four generations of the monarchy in one shot", which was beautifully captured here:

This one is a little surreal for me. It really is extraordinary to realize how long these four will cumulatively hold the throne of the most prestigious monarchy in the world. Hefty stuff. I love that we have a peak at the Queen's dress here, which appears to be a very nicely detailed paisley. I assume Angela Kelly deserves a "hear, hear." I will say that George looks like Harry to me in this photo. I love how he is awake and alert in all these shots--well done!

The third photo released was one of the Windsors:

I like how super formal this photo starts out as, and then suddenly with the Queen's gaze directed at George and away from the camera, it suddenly takes on a relaxed and familiar tone. I am betting that this was not deliberate, but a lucky shot. Photo shoots, particularly with subjects as unpredictable as babies, are very click, click, click--capture, capture, capture, and see what fun things you come up with. I am guessing that this was the lucky result. I think it a lovely mix. It also paints the story of the future represented in this photo as the Queen looks toward a boy who will be king three monarchs down the line! Wow!

The last photo released featured both sides of the family, and I like it, too. For those of us hoping for a glimpse of Pippa's dress, it was not to be. Ah well, I know a lot of work went into that coat! I am still not sure what I think about James's beard. I am not in love with it, but it does make him look like he could be related to George V! And Michael Middleton looking so proud and happy on the right; he looks like such a great guy. They are a handsome family all around.

I love that George and Kate are the center of this photo, as they should be. It is the same drumbeat from me, but Kate deserves this after the ups and downs, and it is so wonderful to see her, literally glowing, holding her precious little baby, surrounded by her family.

The fun isn't over, though! Kate was at a gala tonight and she was radiant in one of our favorite labels! Post coming soon...

  1. Hi Jane! I like the pics but they have some negative sides too.! Kate and Will are too much photoshopped and the didn't need that. I am a bit disappointed that Her Majesty is not holding the baby!:-( I'm sure they have a pic of her with George in her arms but they decide not to publish it.
I don't know but I expected a bit more from a professional... Maybe Michael Middleton did better...
    Did I exaggerated?
However my favourite pic is of course the one with George and parents! Very cute! I like also the one with the Queen staring at him!
    Good job as always!

    1. i was deeply disappointed when i saw the first picture. george looks sooooooo cute, absolutely g(e)orgeous! ;))) but kate's face was photoshoped so much that she looks a bit like a barbie doll.

      love your blog, jane! :)

  2. Thanks, Marta! Glad you liked the post. I have to say, the first thing that struck me when I saw the photos was the photoshopping, but honestly, I didn't mind. Kate is a beautiful woman, that they erased a few lines and gave her a glow just makes the art more beautiful to me. I am a model and have seen some of my shots photoshopped. It's a "wooow, my skin looks a-mazing" moment, and I think it is ok to have a few of those. I think given the magnitude of the day, Kate is entitled to a little modern touch-up.

Perhaps it was lightly overdone, but I don't know, I just I really liked them. :) Now we have both-- Michael captured something very intimate and natural, the professional prints preserve something for history. Most painted portraits are idealized. This is fair as far as official royal portraits go.

  3. Poor Pipa, the coat dress is not very flattering. She appears to be pregnant in the family pic.

    1. I didn't notice that until you said something and you are right! She looks like she has a little bump. Maybe that's why her coat had an empire waist! Whouldn' that be something?!

    2. Oh my gosh, no! I do not think that is happening right now. (Although now you mention it, the light isn't playing off the coat very well.) nevertheless, no. No no. No. :)

  4. Oh my! She really does. I didn't notice that before. Her smile is fantastic though.

  5. I like the photos. They don't appear too overly stuffy, which seems to be a risk with the Royals given all the grandiose and tradition. The only thing I will say about them is the photo shopping appears to be overly done. I don't usually notice photo shopping (seriously, I am horrible at picking up on it), but it was the first thing about the Cambridge's photo I noticed, even before what a lovely family they make and the joy that is visible. The lightening is too much.

    1. Yes, I think it was little over done, but just a very little. The left side of Kate's face, our right, is touched up just the slightest bit too much. I think it is ok to photoshop it, but a photoshop should blend, not jump out.

  6. Thanks so much Jane for getting this pictures up so fast!! I never even thought about the pictures being photoshopped, I just thought that the lighting was a little differant, especially in the group shot where the center of the picture looks a little brighter than the rest.

I agree with Martina, I think a picture of the Queen holding Prince George surrounded by Charles and Williams would have been perfect. Also, I wish there was a picture of Kate standing so we could have seen the dress in full. I would have liked to see the skirt and ruffling better.

All in all though, they all look very happy and relaxed in each others company. Looks like a wonderful day was had by all!

    1. This was so fun. I just had the best day seeing all this royal activity. Thanks for reading! Yes, I wish we had gotten more photos, although I think they initially said they would only release three, and we got four! Probably because they couldn't cut it down anymore. One of just the three of them, one with just the Windsors, the historic Queen with the generations of heirs, and then of course, one with the Middletons. Lucky us.

    2. We were so spoiled with all the pictures from William's christening, I just wish we could see a few informal ones too. sigh

  7. OMG the first picture, of baby George and his parents, are the cutest photo ever!!!!! I just love it!. Kate looks beautiful, completely beautigul, William looks very happy and the baby, with his little open arms, cute, cute, cute!!!!!!! The last picture, with all the relatives and families together, are beautiful too. Harry's, Pippa's and Carole's smiles are radiant! Just love it.

  8. I think Pipa is very pretty and has a great figure, but she struggles when it comes to formal attire. She misses the mark somehow. She always looks great in street or casual clothes though! I think this coat dress has too much fabric with the paneling in the back and the loose fitting front.

    1. Yes, she certainly has had some major blunders. I have to say, I don't think this was one of them, but surprisingly to me, many didn't like the coat, so you are not alone. I think it is a tough position for her, in any event.

  9. I would have loved to see a photo of the Middletons with Will, Kate & George. I am sure one was taken but they did not release it. I bet there are many more that we will never see.

    1. Me too! I don't know that I would bet on that. I bet we will see more as the years roll by. Perhaps not anytime soon, but someday I fully expect we will see more.

  10. Lovely photos and good to see the Middletons firmly and equally part of the family. I very much like the influence that William and Kate are having on the RF and there's no doubt George will have a very happy, loving and stable upbringing.

    1. Yes. Kate and the Middletons have been invaluable to the royal family and brought back some stability that unfortunately was lost with the first Wales marriage. George should turn out very normally and well-adjusted.

    2. As his father was, George will be loved, and that is the most important thing. We all know that whoever Will decided to marry, she would be famous. Everyone waited for the new princess. We'll see Kate navigate whatever is ahead. I wish her well. I think that it would be daunting to become part of the royal family.I think that she is trying very hard to play the part, and we should appreciate her. Wills is hot. He will become even better.

  11. I think the retouching looks fine. The pictures look fresh and bright, and the retouching probably contributed to that.

Any thoughts on why HM is wearing black gloves indoors? Is that customary in the UK? I find them to very visually jarring.

    1. I think the Queen always wears gloves when out of her home and/or on formal occasions. I don't know that this a strict protocol as much as tradition in the age she was raised. Certainly when on a walkabout she wears them to shake hands as well. They said the pictures were taken immediately following the ceremony. Perhaps they really wanted everyone to remain as they were in the chapel? She probably had them on and never even thought to take them off!

  12. I LOVE them all!! the last one with the whole family is a great shot of William. He looks like he is legit laughing at something. Kate I thought kind of had that "I've been smiling for an awfully long time" fake smile going on BUT we all have formal pictures like that dont we? Love it. Love them! Oh to be a fly on the wall sometimes...
