Kate Wears Temperley to SportsAid Ball

Thursday, November 28, 2013

I thought that for a ball Kate would wear a floor-length dress, but she stepped out of the car this evening at the SportBall for SportsAid wearing a knee length Temperley. I can't say I was disappointed.  I am a complete sucker for eyelet, and Kate seems to try and go a little more casual anytime it is appropriate. Given the occasion and the silk detail, this was a great choice.

Kate has certainly been to her hair salon since the last time we saw her. Her hair was noticeably shorter, (I didn't mind the longer length) and she has darkened up her locks, entirely covering the lighter shades that framed her face before. I know that was bothering some of you, so it is your lucky day! Her eyes were incredible tonight. Several pictures captured them perfectly, just glowing color. she was stunning!

I thought perhaps William was with George tonight, but Martin from Royal Central recently tweeted that William had an event of his own tonight, albeit announced:

William hosted the Winter Whites Gala at KP just a few nights ago. The entire palace facade was transformed for the gala, including fake snow! Colin and Olivia Firth were guests as well as Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery and Allen Leech. He appears to have no trouble mingling with the "upstairs" crowd in real life. :)  The noted rock star Bon Jovi was a guest of honor at the ball, along with pop star Taylor Swift. All this to say that the encounter between Wills and Taylor Swift was the height of awkwardness, in a funny way. I have to hand it to her, she took a page out of Kate's playbook. Her dress was decidedly Kate-like, and her clutch was a nod to Kate's favorite evening designer, Jenny P.  Although, Zara Tindall long ago dismissed the myth that William sang Livin' on a Prayer at her wedding reception, he joined Taylor and Bon Jovi on stage to sing it that night. Where Harry would jump up and rock out like a natural, William looked like he was good-naturedly doing his job, but feeling awkward inside. He was certainly putting himself out there. I could almost see Kate chilling next door at their apartment with George, watching the Twitter feed and laughing. William might be at his most charming when he is out of his element. Back to Kate tonight! She accessorized with Jimmy Choo heels and a bright pop of red from her clutch, curtesy of McQueen.

Kate presented the One-to-Watch Award to a 16 year-old Amber Hill who competes on a shooting team. The event was co-sponsored by Tiffany as the iconic blue box is evidence of:

All around success for Kate this evening: beautiful dress; hair back in top, lustrous form; energy and stunning smile. Eyelet was a little risky for an evening event, because it seems to be the daytime counterpart to lace, but this dress pulled the night off well. Kate clearly has a soft spot for eyelet. The gorgeous yellow dress she wore on the Solomon Islands tour is purportedly her own design executed by, perhaps, Angela Kelly, or one of the Queen's personal seamstresses.

Or the blue Mulberry from the same tour:

If William was at a dinner tonight, I imagine either Grandma Carole or Jessie Webb was on duty at the Cambridge's KP apartment. William was quoted at the Winter Whites Ball saying that George had been, "screaming his head off" when he left for the evening. Hopefully, our favorite little prince is calmer this week.

It is Thanksgiving Day in the United States of America and a friend of mine texted and asked me what I was thankful for today. Among the many things I am grateful for, it made me think when I sat down to write this post how thankful I am to write this blog and to have you all reading it! It has been such fun these past few years to watch Kate and share my thoughts with you all. Thank you for coming back again and again to keep up with Kate with me! At the moment, Kate and William are due at a film premiere on December 5th! Not long to wait for the next appearance...
Good night to you all!

    1. Hahaha, yes, it does look a little chilly. Thankfully, the car is preheated in both directions. :)

  2. Jane, first off thank you for taking time out of your Thanksgiving celebration to write this post, I've been looking forward to it all day!!

I really liked this dress and did notice the similarity with the yellow dress she wore for her South Pacific tour. The design of this dress was inspired by Renaissance stain glass windows and is so much more elegant than a strictly eyelet dress which is why it worked so well for this engagement.

I think Kate looked stunning tonight, her hair was gorgeous, a little shorter, bouncy, shiny and a rich chestnut color. She really hit it out of the park in my opinion. I think the darker shade compliments her skin tone so much better than the lighter shade she was worn lately. And Jane, I agree with you, her eyes looked beautiful. It seems that even if George is "screaming his head off" he's sleeping better at night.

    1. I thought the dress looked beautiful in motion (I saw a video of her presenting the award) but photographed kind of awkwardly - the black overlay didn't seem like it flowed as well as it could have. I LOVED the yellow eyelet dress she wore on the tour, along with the blue Mulberry dress and the white eyelet suit. Basically, I love when the eyelet and the underlay are the same color, I need to find a decent repli-Kate of one of those outfits!

    2. Lauri - Agreed! I wouldn't have actually used the word 'eyelet' to describe this dress, because eyelet openings are actually rimmed in thread. This dress is more of a laser-cut. (As described by Temperly.) As such, it's completely appropriate for evening - where as true eyelet would have been questionable.

    3. Lauri! Thanks for your comment about the dress. i read it was laser cut, rather than eyelet, but how that difference changed the feeling was not quickly apparent, but I think you are correct! I love the idea of Renaissance windows, too. Lovely, lovely. Thank you for reading. It made Thanksgiving all the better for a Kate engagement.

    4. Hey Whitney! I agree with your point about the same colors. I loved the yellow eyelet, too, and the white suit was beautiful! Eyelet can be tricky to pull off, but she always does it so well.

    5. Anonymous, yes, your point may have been what I was thinking of--the laser aspect. I usually don't like laser cut because it can feel a a little flimsy and cheap, but if the fabric is good quality, as I am sure Temperley is, it works well. It was a very pretty dress. Eyelet or laser, I think the look adds a playfulness. It was a sports event... :)

  3. Hi Jane,
Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you enjoyed a delicious meal with your family and friends. Thank you for taking to write tonight. When I saw pictures of Kate this afternoon I was kind of disappointed, I didn't think the dress was appropriate for a Ball. I thought the dress was too infantile. I was hoping to see her in a floor length gown. Did she not see pictures of William sitting next to Taylor Swift the night before? Perhaps the dress "does not photograph well". Where did glamorous Kate go? This is my opinion of course. I'm going back to my pumpkin pie.

    1. What does Taylor sitting next to William a few nights ago have to do with what Kate wore tonight? I think Kate can out dress Taylor anytime. Taylors was showing to much boob for meeting William. But that is Taylor. she like's to try and entice the men.

There were other women tonight in short cocktail dresses. Kate know's when to wear a gown vias a short cocktail dress. She hit out of the ball park tonight. Sorry William missed his beautiful wife.

    2. Pauline, I totally agree with you that Kate can out dress someone like Taylor S. and that is my point. Although I didn't care for the bodice of Taylor's dress, I liked the length, her hair, and the glam. Kate has worn beautiful gowns in the past, like what she wore on her trip to California. That dress was so simple but she looked better than any movie star.
I enjoyed reading Sam's comment, he is right! Kate should be "dazzling" because she can do it, effortlessly.

    3. I hope your pumpkin pie was awesome! We had a wonderful family Thanksgiving--very grateful. I expected a floor length, too, but Kate likes to ration those dresses it seems, and this was and vent that felt borderline. Given it was for SportsAid, I think it was ok that she wore a shorter hemline. That being said, perhaps it wasn't the night for the laser cut, which as has been discussed above, does make it a little less formal. nevertheless, there is some inherent glamour in being a duchess and a princess, so I think with that in her arsenal, Kate pulled it off. :)

    4. Pauline, I think that Elizabeth was just trying to point out how formally Taylor Swift dressed for the Winter Whites gala and that we would love to have seen Kate equally glammed up. I don't think there was any disrespect meant to either party.

  5. I think what Kate needs is a gay man to be her stylist/designer. Somebody like Gok Wan. Man that brother can put a dress on a tree, and still make it look fab.

A gay man knows what wimmin like, feel. HM Queen has always had gay men design her out. Norman Hartnell and Hardy Amies famously use to fight each other to design her outfits.

Gok Wan is the best British stylist around. He should be employed by kate at the palace. I know he would be insufferable, and a drama mama and the courtiers would scratch his eyes, but hey he knows his stuff. I watch him on the telly and I'm amazed how he can pull so many birds. I mean wimmin...lol I would love to be his assistant and cop some inside knowledge. But alas it would be just too hard. :):).

I'm simply not liking the off the peg high street stuff kate duchess wears for especially for evening events. Joe public can wear stuff like that.. Im really saying she should be dazzling and jeweled up and her hair elegantly styled accompanied by ladies-in-waiting throwing rose petals in her path kinda thing.. know what I mean? ?

Im not gay honest haha ...Just a Kate fan.

    2. I just have to ask . . . what's up with calling women "wimmin"?

    3. Cheers liz. ...!!

I try not to get invovled with womens discussions but I'm a kate fan. And a cockney.

We cockneys love the royal family. Were brought up into it. David Beckham, Arthur Edwards, Barbara Windsor to name a few . All cockneys and proudly royalist.

Wimmin is a term of endearment like Americans say gal I think.

  7. Love this! the dress was beautiful although I do wish she had worn a full length gown. Her hair was beauitful, back to that rich, glossy tone that I love. Overall a hit for Kate, thank you Jane your post are always wonderful!

  12. I think she looks amazing, again! I hated this dress on the sale website but Kate makes it look so pretty. It also seemed to be very in line with what other people were wearing so I dont think she was dressed down or anything. I quite like it.

  14. The amazing thing about Duchess kate is she looks and acts exactly like my girlfriend who is a native Canadian The resemblance is remarkable. The slight difference is my girlfriend has extremley long hair that goes a little pass her knees. She's never cut her hair since she was little. Everywhere she goes people talk to abt her resemblance to the duchess and also her long hair. Sikh woman and oriental tell her in their respective cultures its a sign of beauty and elegance. I just think it gets in the bleedin' way. ...haha.

If you can imagine dutchess kate with a Canadian (Vancouver) accent same smile, same mannerisms, height, hair colour with extremely long flowing sometimes tied into a long single plait , u have my girlfriend.

The day duchess kate stood outside the lindo wing holding baby George wearing that blue dress and her hair blowing in the breeze I saw my girlfriend. It was spooky the resmblance. Even the way she keeps flicking her hair behind her ears. I don't take her for granted now I guess.

I don't mind being the only boy on this blog. I grew up with an older sister and she had loads of mates. They use to generally take the piss outta men and gossip about the some tart or another. So don't worry girls. I can handle it and also give you a bloke prospective.

Don't mind me if I use the term "Wimmin. !! My grandad use to use it a lot.

    Love to you Jane
    Keepin it real. Xxxx

  15. Kate's hair looks so good! Glad she abandoned the brassy ombre look. Back to Taylor Swift.. no one can know for sure but I wouldn't be too quick to assume that she took a page from Kate's playbook with the choice of gown she wore. The gown wasn't a huge departure from her usual style at most formal events, although elements of it are similar to something Kate might wear. Kate looks great and is confident in her style but maybe she should take a page from Taylor's playbook and wear some more pretty updo's :)
