Was Kate Originally a Blonde?

Monday, November 4, 2013

"Did you know that Kate is originally a blonde?" My mom was reading some article on our favorite princess and had come across the picture of Kate, Pippa, and Michael Middleton in Jordan. Although I vehemently denied that Kate was ever anything but a brunette, it is true that her hair looks remarkably blonde in the photo. So, I hunted up all the pictures of Kate as a child that I could to prove my point that she has been, from the moment her dark head poked out of a blanket in Carole's arms, to the foot of the altar at Westminster, a brunette. Since none of us have anything better to think about right now, I decided to share the research. We have seen them all before, bien sûr.

She is so darn cute:

But, this one might be my favorite:

Anyway, we agreed that the Jordanian sun must have bleached her hair a little. :)  Well, hopefully we will be seeing up-to-date Kate soon. William has a packed week of engagements, but Kate is keeping out of the limelight and we only expect to see her on the 7th. Better than nothing!

  1. Thanks for a great post, Jane! It was fun to see some pictures of a younger Kate that I've never seen before. On to her blonde beginning. My kids were both born with brown hair, which lightened up considerably when they were toddlers and stayed quite blonde until they were about 5-6 years old and at that time started turning back to brown. Now my daughter (25 yrs old) has dark brown hair and my son (28 yrs old) has light brown hair. I'm not sure how or why that happens but I've seen many pictures of brunettes that were blondes as children.

The last picture of William and Kate is by far my favorite picture of the two of them. They look so very happy and excitied for their wedding.

    1. No problem, thank you for dropping in, reading, and commenting! It seems like this is a fairly recurring experience. I have always been quite dark, but my sister was much lighter when she was young. I love that last picture, too. They both looked so joyous and confident!!

  2. Hi Jane, Wow you put in a lot of work in this new post! You definitely made up for your tardiness on the previous one ( Just Kidding!). I'm sure you are very busy so thank you for running such a terrific blog. It is always fun to read. By the way, these pictures show how photo genetic Kate is. She never takes a bad photo.

  3. I have some school photos of me from infants school - I was dark at 5, quite blonde by the following year and by the time I started middle school, I had settled into a sort of auburn which has stayed with me! Not sure why all the changes !

    1. Hmm, well, it seems you and Kate share the hair journey! :) She does look blonde in Jordan, but probably due in large part to the strong sun.

  4. Great post! I love your blog. I wonder if her hair was lighter because she was living in Jordan and probably outside more? The sun probably bleached her hair and made it lighter than it actually is.

    1. Thanks!! So glad you come by and read. I agree, and as others have mentioned. she could have been disposed toward lighter hair at that age. It seems many people here have stories of toddlers/young children having lighter hair for a while. Nevertheless, I think it would be incorrect to say she is a blonde.

  5. The last photo was photoshoped. Kate's head's too big. Will touches her head, but his face is much smaller. Wrong proportions. I wonder why Kate always has the dark shadows around her eyes. Kidneys or blood problem?

    1. I am wondering the same. I am no expert, but could be a sign of food allergies - they commonly cause discoloration and fine lines around the eyes.

  6. The last photo is not a photoshop. It was one of the official photos taken by Mario Testino and released a little after the initial two. Kate is closer to the camera and so appears larger because the perspective.

    1. That photo debuted in the program for the royal wedding. The second photo from the Marlborough years, is that Emilia D'Erlanger with Kate?
