Royal Christmas: Sandringham 2013

Wednesday, December 25, 2013

I love that on Christmas Day we are always guaranteed wonderful royal sightings.  William and Kate accompanied the Queen and senior royals to the morning communion service at 9am. This service always includes great light for beautiful shots of the family relaxed and outlined by the early glow of the sun on the trees and grass. Kate was wearing the (unidentified label) pinkish white coat that she wore in Switzerland, with a beautiful red plaid scarf casually wrapped around her shoulders. She opted for her Aquatalia boots, just as she did her first early Christmas morning with the Royals.

Kate walked most of the way with Sophie and Edward, while William and Harry appeared to be having some boy time as they trailed Charles. Harry was still sporting his beard from the North Pole trek. I wonder if they told George that Uncle Harry had been off visiting Father Christmas?

Later in the day, we all got a Christmas treat when William and Kate walked hand-in-hand to the church for the 11am service. Kate changed into the McQueen tartan she wore to St. Andrews school right before the announcement she was expecting George.

I thought she might change into booties or heels, but she stayed with the rhumba boots and added a beautiful green Gina Foster hat that pulled the lighter shade of green from the tartan out very well. I thought this was a beautiful coat when she wore it the first time, and it was a fantastic recycle today as well.

Victoria Murphy from the Mirror, herself a new mother, was tweeting great shots this morning from St. Mary Magdalene of William and Kate:

I was glad Kate switched up her colors, this year. The darker blue and green were a nice change after her last two Christmases. She wore a (beautiful) maroon for her first year as a royal in 2011.

And she was again in deep red in 2012 as she left her Berkshire church with her family looking delicate after her stint in the hospital.

The couple were wreathed in smiles this morning as Kate told well-wishers that baby George had opened his presents already, but was more more interested in the wrapping paper than the actual gifts.

The Royals gather around the television at Sandringham to watch the Queen's Christmas broadcast with the nation. We were all in for a treat, because in the course of her recollections this year, the Queen of course mentioned the joy that George's birth and christening has brought...and we got some footage from the photo-shoot. Kate can be heard cooing to George, encouraging him to smile as William holds him for the four generation shot. It truly is Christmas!

A very, very Happy Christmas to you all and to your families!

P.S. One of you really wanted to see her re-wear this dress. We were chatting in the comments in the past month. This must have been a particularly good Christmas for you! :) I wasn't expecting this at all, but it was entirely perfect for Christmas morning.

  1. Merry Christmas Jane!! Thanks for taking the time out of your celebrations to bring us this lovely post! I thought William and Kate looked so happy this morning, and wow they were holding hands, the last time we saw this was after their wedding. Kate looked lovely in both outfits this morning, I really liked the last photo, it's the only closeup I've seen so far and she looks beautiful!

    1. Thank you, Lauri! I am so happy that you came by and read the post. It was a Christmas treat to see them all and to write up the post! I hope you had a wonderful day!!

  2. Jane,
Merry Christmas! I hope you are having a wonderful time connecting with your family and friends (including your friends on this blog)! I loved to see the warm and loving relationships on display today: Kate and the Queen, William
and Harry, and, of course, William and Kate! I couldn't believe they were holding hands, they never show any PDA. The most we see is Williams hand on Kate's back lol.
I loved to see Kate in green, it brings out the color in her eyes. She looked beautiful today. I was hoping to see Baby George, but he may be to young.
Jane, thank you for running this blog. You are doing a great job. I hope you continue enjoying the holiday season and I wish you a happy and prosperous new year!

    1. Thank you! Yes, I had a absolutely wonderful Christmas filled with family, friends, and everyone here at the blog. I really enjoy interacting with you all and the wonderful "Kate community." The royals' Christmas morning certainly brings us all together on the special day!
Yes, the green did make her yes pop. she look beautiful!! I think it was probably both too cold and he would have been a little fussy, I imagine.
I appreciate you reading the blog. Have a wonderful Christmas week and a fabulous New Year!!

  3. Absolutely beautiful Christmas present! Kate and William look so in love and the queen's message, with Kate cooing to George was just adorable. Just wanted to point out that we see Will and Kate PDA more than we remember. Olympics anyone?! Haha. Anyway, thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy day to bring us these beautiful blog posts about William and Kate. I know I am speaking for everyone when I say it means a lot. Have a very merry christmas!

    1. Oh my gosh, that was so fun to see the behind the scenes footage! Yes, they do PDA quietly a little more than other royals. Most of the PDA's we have, though, are from paparazzi shots that aren't official events, so it is a little more unusual to see them walk like this for a more formal photo engagement, but it was a perfect balance of official engagement, but obviously it is a family day, too.
Thank you, thank you for your kind words. I am so happy that people came and read the blog on Christmas Day! A Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  4. Hi Jane I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! What a lovely couple they make they are always smiling and so relaxed in each others company even though many eyes are watching! She looked beautiful once again in the coat and the green hat was stunning. Over the past few months I have noticed something different in kate, she seems more mature, more comfortable in her own skin and her position and she has become a real princess. Lovely post jane, seasons greetings to you and everyone at the blog!

    1. Hello! I did, thank you! The royals made it all the better, too! Yes, I think that becoming a mother has probably shifted her a little, but it has made her a more confident royal. She looked so wonderful Christmas morning! Thanks for reading! A very Happy New Year to you!
