Kate Attends a Wedding on March 29, 2014
Splash News

I had written an entirely different post about how there has been no Kate, and then...this! Excitement overdrive. These are the BEST sightings. The unexpected...I love them the mostest. And, as luck would have it, she wore a coat of which I have been hoping and expecting a rewear: the blue, fringed Missoni. She recycled the Sylvia Fletcher for Lock & Co. hat, as well.

Kate wore this coat first with the Queen and Camilla in March of 2012 on the St. David's Day appearance at Fortnum & Mason. I loved this wear better than the next time she wore it. Accessories can help or hinder, and the grey suede pumps she paired with the blue, the pop of color from the traditional daffodils, all really made this a standout appearance:

From that same day, I love this picture. This little guy seems to be thinking, will you be my princess if I present you these flowers? Too late, buddy. See enormous sapphire ring on left hand...

Kate recycled the coat again in July of 2012 for a Diamond Jubilee event in Nottingham.

This time she aded the Rachel Trevor-Morgan hat that she debuted at the Irish Guards. (picture to refresh your memory)

I loved this hat with the McQueen at the guards, but it didn't pair so well to my mind with this Missoni. Or, perhaps, I didn't like the angle at which she wore it with the Missoni. It is a beautiful hat, it just sat awkwardly on her head that day. In any event, I preferred the Missoni on St. David's Day.

William, Kate, and Harry were at St Mary's Church, in Marshfield, Gloucestershire for the wedding of good friends Lucy Meade and Charlie Budgett. You can just see a bit of the dress peaking through beneath her coat.

I love the little detail of the daffodils in these pictures. Not that this was planned, but great continuity from St. David's Day, and as I say, that yellow with the blue is entirely perfect.

We have also seen this Sylvia Fletcher hat two three times before, and again, Kate wore it magnifenctly once, and then switched up the angle for less stunning results, and lastly it was barely visible. I loved it the first time she wore it. Kate was genuinely stunning from head to toe when she joined the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to kick off the Diamond Jubilee festivities. Remember that? I could almost hear Professor Higgins saying, "she is...a princess":

The second outing for this hat came at the Aldershot Barracks for the St. Patricks Day Parade in 2013 when she was pregnant with George. She changed the angle and put her hair up. I just didn't love it.

In September of 2013, on a visit to the Queen on her Balmoral estate, Kate was photographed on her way to Crathie Kirk wearing this hat...and the Moloh coat. No comment. The hat looked great. I wish we had gotten better pictures...it may have even given the Moloh a chance to redeem itself...but I doubt it.

Today she looked fab. I would still like to see this hat just a fraction farther up on her head, but I mean only a fraction, and I think having her hair loose and glamorous also helps to balance the heaviness of the hat. Otherwise, she looked picture perfect to me. Kate has always been a lady who mixes blue and black fearlessly, and always with outstanding success. Her court shoes were sensibly black to match the hat, although I do miss those suede pumps. This shot of the royal trio, with the lovely garden walk and the cheerful surrounding spring flowers, could not have been more perfect. I don't think we are going to see Kate publicly before the tour, but this makes up for it, oh so, so much.

I'll work on ID'ing the dress, but I know you all are anxious to see the pictures, so I am posting now...
The dress is Whistles--thank-you Amanda for your fast ID! When I looked at the print, it seemed familiar, but I couldn't place it. It is the Whistles she wore the Olympic closing event. When I said I was "busy" in that post, that is Jane-talk for in France. Let us just say I was not as focused as I ought to have been on Kate's clothes.

Unfortunately, this is one of those dresses that also didn't get a completely "fair wear." The only shots we got were with low lighting or through masses of people. We have yet to see it to its best advantage, but every guest at the wedding just got to...

  1. Iam sorry to say but as much as I loved this coat on earlier occassion for me it is not elegant enough for a wedding. Maybe it is the material of the coat, I find it weird she chooses to dress down a bit for wedding when she could dazzle even if I know she doesnt want to outshine the bride but after the polka dot situation I except more from her. By the way the dress is new and it is Zara, she did a little shopping on Thursday after her tiresome work. Thanks for being so quick!A.

    1. I know what you mean about the polka dot, but weddings have various dress codes. i thought this was appropriate for a wedding. The fringe does dress it down a little, I guess, but I still like it. :)
What do you think of the Whistles theory? they are a pretty close match.... In either case, I would love to see the Zara you are thinking of!

  3. Hey Jane :)
    nice post!
I totally agree concerning the angle of her hats. When I first saw the pictures of today on my mobile I didn't know which detail I didn't like on her today and yet, here comes your post and I know it - the angle :)!
The dress she wore today is (I think) the one from the Diamond Jubilee Concert?!

    Greetings from Bavaria :)

    1. Hi Vroni! So glad you thought so, too. These hats are tricky things. It makes me nervous about getting the angle right myself...
You are right, I think it is the Olympic closing ceremony, too. I was goofing off that month and obviously it isn't in my mind the way it should be... :)

  4. I think it was in fact the fourth outing for the hat: didn't she wear it also to attend church while at Balmoral in August/September last year?
Anyway, I totally agree with you on the angle, she looked absolutely fab and picture-perfect when she first wore it on the Jubilee visit!

    1. Yes, I think you might be right! With the Moloh maybe? I would have to go back and look. I will a little later today!

    2. Marianna: It was the 4th outing and it was the Moloh in Scotland. Good memory. I have updated the post, (well, I am about to update the post) thanks for reminding me! :)

  5. Must disagree about the angle of the hat--nicely balanced by her hair brought over the other shoulder.
    Thought she looked elegant.
    Loved the daffodils too.
    Her escorts looked good too.

    1. They did! Those Wales boys clean up very nicely.
I liked the hat today--although a slight adjustment would have made me the happiest, but I can see why you think it is fine. It isn't off in my mind, it just could be a hint better. (I didn't like the Aldershot wear, though)

  6. on whatkatewore.com she is wearing the hat w/the moloh jacket while william is driving them to church. I was never a fan of the Missoni coat , and this look seems so mismatched. BUT DID YOU SEE NEW PRINCE GEORGE PICS?!!

  8. Yay! It feels as though it's been ages since we last saw her. I love this coat blue is stunning on kate and this kind of slim fitted shape really suits her.

Also Jane I wanted to ask you when do you think they will leave for new Zealand? O heard they are due to arrive at 12pm Friday. Can't wait for the post on the prince George pics! Yay the tour is so close now I love that I'm on holiday from uni as well so I will be checking I'm twice a day

    1. The flight is monstrously long, and New Zealand is a full 12 hours ahead of the UK. My brain is spinning from the math here, but they will have to leave on Sunday, I would imagine. I don't even know what direction they will fly and am not sure which time is faster. they may fly east, or for security, they may fly west. I don't know. I am sorry. This may have already been released, but I haven't noticed if it has.

  9. kate should get better outfits, this recycling for a duchess is making her look tacky and cheap

    1. This is a beautiful and expensive coat, and a lovely coordinating dress. She has every right to recycle, both on the occasional public outing and particularly on private occasions, which is what this wedding was: a private affair. I think it shows Kate remains sensible and down to earth, despite her privileged and high-profile position.

  10. I'm not a fan of this outfit .. first of all I think that the combination of a heavy coat with a summer dress is not correct.. and the coat is a little old lady from .. while the dress is very young.
Also I find it regrettable that the future Queen is wearing the same dress as a common guest.. I find that the fact of recycling clothes is very prudent on the part of Kate, but she should in any case buy clothes more sophisticated. If she likes shopping at Zara ok, but at least she can use these clothes in her spare time and not in semi-official events where she knows to be photographed ...

  11. I really feel for the other wedding guest who wore the same coat. Can you imagine, going to a wedding, probably very proud of your new coat, just like the Duchess has, and who shows up wearing the same outfit, and I might add wearing it better, the Duchess!!! That would be a nightmare! And what was that woman thinking to pair it with shiney purple sandals???

While I thought Kate looked lovely today, she has in the past reworn outfits that just didn't work, Remember the lovely gray coat that she wore to the Garter ceremony right after the wedding. She paired it with the Jenny Packham painted silk dress she wore in Santa Barbara for a wedding and the two just didn't go together. And on top of that she wore the brown straw facinator!

It's nice to see that sometimes even Kate misses the fashion mark. It makes me feel a little better about my fashion mistakes. :)

    1. Hi Lauri: I was mortified for that poor woman. What were the chances, you know? Bad, bad, bad. I felt terrible for her. She looks so miserable even in the photos.

I agree, she doesn't always recycle things together perfectly, and we are certainly on the same page on that Jenny Packham with the Grater coat was not ideal at all.

  12. I have to agree with some of the other commenters, I do not like this coat for a wedding. It looked lovely for her royal engagements but not to a wedding. Also the heavy material in contrast to a summer dress. Not wanting to upstage the bride, understand but a younger choice would have been nice. The coat is very mature looking.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think the recycling and the choice is most certainly to not to upstage the bride. You know that if she wears something new, flashy, trendy then it will be all over the place and the paparazzi will be worse then it probably already is. Not sure what the weather is like in merry olde england but the heavy material would be appropriate for over here in New England :(

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think this choice was very intentional - to not upstage the bride. You know that if Kate wore something new or trendy, the paparazzi would go wild. I am not sure what the weather is like over in the UK, but I can tell you that the heavy coat would be very appropriate for this time of year in New England. Since you are not really seeing the 'summer dress" under the coat I think it is a non-issue. I also see the dress as spring/summer.
