St. Patrick's Day 2014: William and Kate At Aldershot

Monday, March 17, 2014

In February of 2011,  Prince William was made Colonel of the Regiment of the Irish Guards, and the annual St. Patrick's Day parade has been a staple on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's calendar ever since. Kate always discharges the traditional duty of the wife of the regiment colonel by presenting the shamrocks. Marking their first public appearance together this year, an immaculately dressed Kate and very dashing William were on hand this morning for the event.

Her green Hobbs coat is an absolute smash hit with me. I don't usually love this longer length, but this morning it was absolutely perfect. It isn't bulky, instead the coat hangs very softly and moves with her, making it look elegant and entirely refined. Also, it echoes the structure and style of the handsome military coat of her husband and the other officers, so she was beautifully fitting in among the men in her own very feminine way.

Kate has done this before where she wears an outfit that is evocative of the uniforms she is mingling with, and the best example is actually when she visited the Irish Guards (in Windsor) to present medals in June of 2011. This customized McQueen remains one of my favorite ensembles from the Duchess of Cambridge and exemplifies her ability to pull off just the sartorial triumph that she did today:

Kate recycled this beautiful bespoke Gina Foster topper from her Christmas appearance, which incidentally was also the last time we saw William and Kate together.

It is a beautiful hat, structured--which I always love--with a little attitude and panache. It just barely works with the coat, which is lucky since it clearly was not made or bought to coordinate.

Kate's shoes were the biggest surprise of the day to me. She debuted brand new green suede pumps from Emmy Shoes, a boutique in London initially founded to create bespoke bridal shoes and now making a range of shoes and accessories. Her clutch, which only can be seen in some photos, is also Emmy.

In 2012, Kate's attendance at the Irish Guards marked her first solo military engagement, as William was serving his tour in the Falklands. She wore a stunning green Emilia Wickstead at that time, and appeared to charm the entire barracks. This is my all-time favorite picture from any St. Patrick's Day. She is such an adorable flirt:

In 2013, she was back at Aldershot with William. She surprised most of us by recycling her coat from the year before, only having it taken out to accommodate baby George just a little. The grate in the yard proved to be a heel trap, and made headlines the world over.

Pictures are always taken with the regiment, a brief tour, and toasting in the barracks. Last year it was juice for Kate, but this year she can once again imbibe.

In the past two years she has worn her hair half up and then entirely up. I loved her hair today, loose and natural, and with what appears to be a recent trim. The green shoes were the perfect addition, and the natural stockings exactly what the coat length demanded. Kate looked radiant, and her smile and laughter lit up picture after picture. It was hard to choose, she looked so gorgeous in each one!

Happy St. Patrick's Day to you all!

  1. Hi Jane you are so fast! I adore this ensemble and Jane with your love of all things french Im sure you will agree this ensemble was tre chic! I loved the coat this deep forest green really suits her and her new tan, and the shoes are beautiful and really complement the whole outfit.
Her hair was also lovely and looking in great condition, so overall its a big thumbs up from me. William also looked very dashing and smart and my goodness do they look good with each other! I do hope there will be more engagments to look forward to before the tour, I really cannot wait that long. Im really happy she wore something new as well, I was worried she would wear the Emila Wickstead again, but we were lucky, a new engagement and a new outfit!
Great post Jane and thanks for getting it up so quick. So excited for the tour, roll on April 7th!

    1. :) Yes, I think any French woman would approve of this. Very, very elegant! I know, doesn't William look great?! I love this uniform on him, it is my favorite--significantly more than the wedding uniform, although that looked nice, too.
      Thanks for reading and commenting!

  2. P.S Jane do you know of any upcoming engagements?

    1. She has no current engagements on her calendar. I think it is pretty likely that she will have at least one before the tour. Engagements are announced about two weeks in advance, so we have just a little breathing room if she wanted to slip one in, and of course, every now and again she does a surprise engagement with little advance warning. Fingers crossed!

  3. Hi Jane, great post!! It's great to see W&K out together at an engagement, it felt like ages ago when we last saw them together. I think William looks so handsome in this uniform, I almost like it better than the red one he wore at the wedding.

Kate looks lovely today! At first I was taken aback by all the green, green hat, green coat, green dress, green eyeshadow, green shoes, wow lots of green. But she pulled it off beautifully, the shades while not exactly matching, look very good together. I think my favorite St. Patrick's look is from 2012, I love the green/brown combination.

It looks to me like her hair is shorter, as was mentioned in a prior post. This length suits her well, it frames her face but allows for some volume and bounce.

Do you know if we will see them again before the Aussie tour?

    1. Yes, they haven't been on a public engagement together since Christmas, which isn't entirely a public engagement even. :) I agree it was a bit of a risk to mix all the green, but when she pulls this stuff off, she pulls it off. She must have had the luck of the Irish today. ;)
Nothing is currently scheduled, but I don't think it is out of the realm of the possible that something will be scheduled. I am really hoping for one!

  4. Hi Jane!
Quick, and a great post as usual!
I must say that when I first had a glimpse of Kate I thought she had recycled again this oufit: http://www.zimbio.com/photos/Kate+Middleton/Queen+Diamond+Jubilee+Tour+Begins+2/RbW1FBqL3r_
Then, when I saw her entire figure I sighed with relief! :-)
The hem lengh is not my favourite as well but it surprisingly suit her! Perhaps a suggestion from Her Majesty?;-D
I'm also glad that William put an end(at least for the moment) to the on going pregnancy's romours..

    1. Haha, I loved that LK Bennett suit, but I agree this coat was much better suited to today's event. I actually updated the post to address how perfect this coat is!
Thanks for reading! Sorry I fell asleep this morning! Haha, I knew I wouldn't get pictures for a few hours, so sleep seemed pretty enticing.

I am glad he said that, but I doubt it will stop rumors. Of course, one of these days there will be another one, so I can see why people speculate, but...a little early right now. :)

  5. I wish she had stuck with the original belt, too much/different shade of green to me. Other than that she looked happy and skinny again.

    1. The belt with the original is actually pretty nice, although the usual rule of thumb is to buy an expensive belt. I think she was probably thinking the darker green went with the darker shoes and clutch. I think it works, but I can see your perspective.
She is looking lovely and totally happy. Nice to see, for sure. :)

  6. Jane thanks again for a great post. W&K looked so good together. I really miss seeing them together, hope we will see more of them after the tour. Kate looked beautiful as always. Loved her dress & hair.

  7. Lovely---green suits her so well and they both looked so happy.
I love her hair at that length---I cannot understand why so many people complain and want her to wear it up---she can do that when she is older.

    1. I agree with you about the hair for the most part. Every now and again she wears something that really needs an up-do, but as long as she has her hair beautifully blown out, I am pretty happy with it loose and lovely.
Also agree that green suits her coloring perfectly, she always looks so good in it!

  11. Hi Jane,

I really hope Kate will wear the blue McQueen again. I absolutely love it. And the white skirt and top from the asia tour. Also McQueen. Maybe we will see them on the new tour :)

    1. Hello Alexa! Me too! I love, love, love that coat/dress. So flattering on her, isn't it? I will be very interested to see if she recycles on the tour. She has done it before, but not often at all. And her recycles were very low-profile and pieces she hasn't necessarily worn at super public events. Can't wait for it all!

  13. Jane I was just wondering if you could notice if Kate was wearing the enyernity ring? In a few it look's like maybe. My eyes are bad so I was hoping you couldor could not notice. Thanks

    1. Hi Pauline: I just zoomed in to double check, and she is definitely still wearing it. I imagine it will be a permanent fixture. i think it probably represents something special to her--William or George, or some life event we may not even know about.

  14. The Duchess looked lovely today, liked the coat, but not a fan of the belt. Shoes look terrific. Her hair is so much better a bit shorter and looked like more layers in it, more movement that way.

  15. Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I couldn't help but notice the lower-than-usual hemline of this coat. Granted, it is just a coat, but in the wake of all those (frankly, absurd-sounding) rumors about the queen demanding that Kate dress more modestly, I wonder if there isn't just a hint of truth to them? Not that the queen is calling the shots, but do you think Kate feels an obligation to slowly, subtly begin to evolve her wardrobe as she banks more and more time as a royal (not to mention her position as a mother)? I doubt she'll leave her personal style behind at any point, but I'd be curious to know if you felt this was just a coincidence or if she is intentionally evolving and maturing her wardrobe.

    1. I think it is an entirely legitimate observation and question. It is a long coat and comes in the wake of lots of these Queen stories. I still argue the Queen is not flexing her muscle to influence Kate's fashion, but the truth is none of us actually know..unless someone is connected to a hacker. Haha, I jest...sort of. I would argue that although this is longer, two of Kate's most recent public engagements, one of which was with the Queen, were in high hemlines. (The reception for the actors of stage and screen, and the blue LK Bennet for ICAP.) Additionally, she has worn this coat length in the past, long before the stories about the Queen cracking down surfaced. The red LK Bennet she has worn several times, most notably on the joint appearance with Frederick and Mary, comes to mind first. It is the same longer length. I think she likes short, but she certainly has a history with long. Furthermore, this isn't a custom piece, she obviously went shopping to her go-to labels for a green coat. I think this one fit the bill for color, warmth, and style--so she bought it. Straightforward. That's my best argument. :)
