[Update 2] William and Kate Are On Holiday In The Maldives

Thursday, March 6, 2014

Update 2:  Well, this has certainly been quite the developing story. Richard Palmer from The Express has just reported that William has not finished his course at Cambridge and that it will finish off at the end of the month. If that is in fact the case, that is more than a ten week course, which suggests that the course has built-in little breaks, presumably he is using one now to holiday with Kate. Further details from the story:
The couple are understood to be holidaying at a newly opened private resort island in the northern part of the Maldives.
I am still not convinced that George has accompanied his parents. I am betting this is a romantic getaway, sans baby.

Update 1: As it turns out, it seems there is no embargo, William and Kate simply were able to keep this little vacation under their hats.

Last night I was lying in bed falling asleep thinking that we really need some more Kate news. Well, HRHKaters--which is what I have recently determined I will call you--this morning the rumor is that William and Kate landed in the Maldives around 9:40am and were directly whisked away by a security team for a week long stay. The couple are taking a short holiday together at an undisclosed location.

None of the major networks are picking this story up, so I am a little nervous that it might be a hoax, which it may very well be, but I am increasingly certain it is legitimate. It has been just ten weeks since William started his course at Cambridge. Translation: it should have just wrapped up leaving him free to sneak away with Kate. He missed the annual tropical holiday in Mustique, and typically William and Kate go on holiday together at least once in the early part of the year. Locals are mentioning the royal couple is there, and little news sites also are excitedly reporting on it, so I am going out on a sturdy twig and saying they are indeed on holiday in the Maldives.

The Maldives was on the short list for their honeymoon, losing out to the Seychelles, but now they get their royal stamp of approval after all.

I was still wondering over media silence. It should't take them this long to confirm the story, and usually if it is a fake someone, somewhere highlights the error. "Kate isn't at the Percy wedding, she is shopping in London!" that sort of thing. Then it suddenly dawned on me...embargo? If William and Kate are on holiday and the press is entirely quiet about it, it seems there might be an embargo--which I do not know about.  Oops. I'll keep you updated...

  1. Hi Jane, I like the idea of creating a nickname for Kate's fans but, I don't know if I like being called HRHKaters, it sounds too much like HRH Haters. Maybe just drop the HRH?

I'm glad Will and Kate (and I'm sure George went too) got a chance to sneak away for a little time together. After Will's schooling and before the grand tour is a perfect time.

    1. The Kater-Haters did seem to rhyme, which we are obviously not! I don't know. I am accepting suggestions! :)

I don't know if George went! I would have been with you in assuming that he would naturally go, but there has been no word that he was spotted, and usually with these things what isn't mentioned is just as significant as what is. Maybe Carole convinced Kate to leave him with her for the week? I know it sounds a bit of a stretch, but as I say. No mention of him makes me think he wasn't seen. I imagine it will be confirmed one way or the other, but...

Ok, I am going to continue to think of nicknames...

    2. You might be on to something there, maybe George is home with grandma. If this is just a quick getaway, it might have been easier to leave George at home and not subject him to another long flight. As a grandmother, when my kids and grandkids visit, I'm always trying to send the parents away so I can have some one on one time with the babies. We grandmothers can get greedy like that! :) And usually the parents are more than happy to oblige!

Maybe have a contest for your followers to decide on a nickname? I'm sure you have some very creative readers!

  2. Good for them! Although How the public take this I do not know. I think they left together without PG. And I can only hope her bikini stays on her this time!:A.

    1. As usual, I expect some will take it well, and others will complain. I am glad they are ignoring the complainers, though. Some people just can't be content. Haha, yes, I am sure the bikini will stay firmly on.

  3. I am glad they got away for a little vacation. They have not had a vacation together in a while. And like the rest said I bet Carole has Goerge for the week. I too being a grandma of one with another on the way I treasure my time with my grandson. I am staying with my family so I can help take care of him and I am enjoying every minute of it. It get's a little tiring but I could not change a thing. So hope Carole has George and is enjoying her time with him.

  4. Holiday from what. These two are bone idle. We in the uk give great respect and wealth to members of the royal family in return for public service
these two have forgotten the public service part they just take take take. And bloggers like this think its okay. Pathetic.

    1. Wow, I am left wondering why you even bother to visit a site like this, when your feelings are such?

    2. If these 2 were full time royals AND had cancelled engagements to go on holiday then I would complain. But they are neither.

We were not expecting any public engagement until 17th March therefore they are perfectly entitled to spend their time as they wish.

How many times do people have to be told that, with the support of HMQ and the PoW, these 2 are NOT full time royals.

IT is expected that William will go full-time around September and/or have another role to carry out. As for Catherine - I think another child mid 2015.

Do people realise that at 32, they have another 40 years minimum ahead of them doing royal duties?

    3. They are full time royals. They have their titles all the time don't they? They just don't have a full time workload.

    4. They are royal--every minute of every day. They are also people and the monarchy comes with protocol. Princess Eugenie and Beatrice are royal every minute of every day, too. We don't see them taking on a full workload, nor frankly, would we want them to. This matter of work-load has an element of discretion. William and Kate have not transitioned to full-time royal in terms of their workload. It is a matter of prudence and convention. As I have argued before, and will continue to argue, Kate will never owe us a thing. As William's wife she may choose to what extent she "works" and to what extent she plays with her children, sips tea, and shops. That isn't my business, nor quite bluntly, is it yours. I believe in women's rights. We have always had the right, the most basic human-right, to raise our children as we see fit. If she chooses to spend every minute of every day devoted to the well-being of her children, no one has the right to gainsay her. Any complaint beyond that can only be laid at the foot of rampant jealousy. If you want to target William for is workload, by all means make your argument. My response continues to be that he is not a full-time working royal, and as such has yet to take on a more arduous schedule. These two already do so much to raise the profile of GB. Kate alone has increased charitable contributions tenfold! By being Kate, by shopping, and being a mother, and doing her part, she is making a huge impact. If your concern blossoms from a desire to see good, then your mind can rest easily, if it springs from more of an attitude that "if I can't take multiple tropical vacations, neither can they" the problem lies closer to home. This may not be your attitude, and I hesitate ascribing anything that is not justly due, but we have had enough negative comments that I hope you understand why I am taking the hardline on this response.

  5. Hi Jane, what do you mean by embargo? Haven't heard that term in this context before. Thanks!!

    1. So, basically, an embargo is just when a story cannot be reported on, or a picture can't be disseminated for a certain period. A picture might be embargoed for 24 hours or 28 days, or whatever, and for a variety of various reasons. A story might be embargoed. There was controversy this week. The royals released the itinerary for the tour, but there was an embargo on it, no one could release the details until a certain time. Some paper in Australia broke the embargo and a lot of people were mad. Essentially, they scooped everyone else. The pictures of William, Kate and George (the ones Michael shot) were embargoed until 12 midnight UK time. Papers and editors need the information, or the pictures ahead of time, but they want a uniform release of the information cross the media. Again, that embargo was broken. With the internet we are seeing more and more embargoes broken. Sometimes, royals will cut deals with the press to either embargo info or have a blackout. Maybe you put an embargo on vacation details until after the event. All the major UK papers and beyond were told that Prince Harry would be going to Afghanistan. It was a very strict black out, and everyone played by the rules because lives were on the line. Much to our embarrassment, it was an American news source that broke that blackout and Harry had to be pulled early from that first tour. So, I guess there is a different between an embargo and blackout. Neither was the case in this scenario. I tweeted this morning about the trip, and crickets were the response, so I thought perhaps their was an agreement to keep quiet in the press, but in fact William and Kate had successfully snuck away. :) No embargo and no blackout.

  6. Thank you, Jane, for that lovely accompanying photo. Ahhhh.... That's my go-to happy-place, considering it's spitting sleet outside my window right now.

    1. Right there with you. We did get some sun today, but it is still far too cold! Hopefully spring will come soon, but until then, nice to think of Kate with her toes in the warm sand.

  7. I wonder if she has taken george? I didn't think she would leave him for a whole week but perhaps granny Carole wanted to spend some time with him.

I know there will be people who think she hasnt done many engagements So why is she on holiday. However, these people should remember two things, firstly she is still technically on maternity leave or though she had done a few engagements since prince George birth. Secondly, when she is not undertaking engagements she is looking after a small child which is challenging and incredibly hard work as it is, and she is probably planning her tour. Remember as well as the outfits which have to be appropriate, she has to learn about the country and also the important people. She must have many meetings with her Secretary. So I think these things should be taken into consideration when discussing her work load. I hope they enjoy there holiday and have a good rest together!

    1. I don't think she took George. No initial reports form locals said anything about him, and if he had been there, it would have been mentioned. Secondly, I get the distinct impression that this is kind of a romantic break or these two. A little second honeymoon, if you will, before the tour. All news outlets are now reporting that George stayed behind with Carole. I don't know if he is in berkshire at Carole's home or if Carole came to him in London. Certainly, Kate would trust her mother, but I feel like only her mother, to take care of him while he is so young and she is so far away.

I LOVE everything you said in the second paragraph. You are spot on. She is super busy planning this tour--so much advance work. She deserves the break so she is relaxed and charming on the actual public engagements in April!

  8. Thank you for the great post! And simmy23 I fully agree with your post. In addition I assume it sort of a test run for George to get to know the perspective nanny who will take of him in OZ better and get to know the feeling that his parents might be away for a day or two during the tour but will always come back. When I was away for a first night when my son was the age of PG - I felt much worser than him being with granny! Kate will enjoy her break for sure but on the other hand I expect her to "suffer" from homesickness for PG.
And for those who never stop complaining abot taxpayer etc. - It is off-season so an ideal time to go, I assume that the funds from PW allow him to afforded it and in addition - they both earn any penny from the royal faults as they are key in driving the attractiveness and sales and boost economy. Without the royal family as a "tourist" and economic player I assume that taxpayers in the UK would have to live with even higher taxes and lost jobs!

    1. Greta comment about the Cambridges, thank you. I agree, they do drive so much of the monarchy's positive image, even only showing up every so often. They have every right to take a holiday when the have time.

I am sure Kate misses George, but I am convinced she left him with Carole, not just the nanny, so although she surely misses him, she isn't worried about him. And, I think she is probably loving some real alone time with her husband. ;)

  9. Good for them, I say! They need some time away, by themselves, especially since they're about to be very busy and likely exhausted on their Down-Under Tour.

  10. Truly, I am a fan, but I wonder if this was the best PR move. She recently came back from the Middleton family holiday, so this is pretty soon to be taking another time away.

While not full time royals, these two are young and it may look better to have taken this holiday AFTER the big trip down under. After a successful trip, many would feel they had earned time off.

  11. I am also a huge fan of William and Kate, but I do agree that the timing for this holiday will not win over those who want to do away with the monarchy. This will be seen as an unnecessary extravagance. I don't think referring to them as "part-time" royals is accurate. William has left his job with the military to spend more time as a "full-time" member of the firm. They live a life of privilege, but along with that comes enormous responsibilities, especially when you are second in line to the throne.

  12. I agree on the holidays, do you know they don't get week-ends? I think their duties and responsibilities keep them running, and they have to beat the clock all the time! This is not even including PG duty, although I am sure it is popular with them.

  13. I am such a fan of William and Kate, because they are taking up the monarchy cause with such a fresh and modern approach. But, do you know that they have only rarely been getting weekends together? I am sure that would be rather heavy, so I think they are within their rights to do something to lighten it up (or is it the weather that has to be lightened up)? Anyway, best wishes to them both.

  14. what r these fresh approach to things r u talking about, the polls showed this couple are the laziest in europe, kate is unnecessay extravagant, we hardly see george, they are out of touch with the people!
