Cambridges Spend a Family Day on the Grounds of Government House in Canberra

Monday, April 21, 2014

Just when you thought you got the night off... Today (Easter Monday in Australia) is the royal couple's day off and they spent it ambling around the grounds of Government House in Canberra.  William and Kate took a stroll hand in hand, while later Kate was seen playing with George, pushing him in his pram, and stopping to take a few commemorative snaps...maybe to send back to Grandma Carole or Aunt Pippa?

William and Kate were dressed casually for their walk. These two just love their walks and they are hand holders!  It is their natural and casual habit, even in private and I am entirely charmed by it. Remember that walk in the park in Edinburgh after Zara's wedding

On honeymoon:

The morning after their marriage:

Christmas Day at Sandringham:

Kate seemed to be enjoying time with her little guy before they spend tomorrow night away from him.

She also walked him around the grounds in his pram, as is her habit in Kensington Gardens. (good to see him in something other than shorts...)

Speaking of walking in Kensington Gardens, a little side story... The Kensington Palace Gardens do not open to the public until 6am and it has been William's habit to take crack of dawn pram walks with his son before the gardens are populated. I think it is very sweet that baby and daddy get their time in before the busy day. I also imagine that William has a lower level of tolerance for pap shots. Kate is watched  and often papped while walking George and she obviously has a very good attitude about it, but William obviously has a short fuse in this department.  Back to today. This video is too, too cute. William and Kate are walking and she tries clicking her heels together! This is my kind of girl. View here

You can view all the photos, including Kate putting George up on her shoulders, here at Canberra Times.

I'll be back tomorrow as this royal tour rolls into its final few days Down Under!

  1. There couldn't be anything cuter. Again amazing pictures of them with their natural, probably all-day behaviour. And I think also a nice gesture as they probably know that they would be photographed showing that they are enjoying their time down under - namely the three of them.

You mentioned George's shorts.I wondered why George wore them so far, especially at the windy airports of NZ (at the australian events the weather seemed to be much warmer but if I got that correctly, NZ was about 15°C/59°F). I would never dare leaving my child's legs blank under 20°C/68°C. Although he's not a thin baby, they cool down so fast. Well, mommy thoughts over fashion thoughts.... hihi

Thank you for the Kensington's gardens story. I didn't know that. Well, George must be up very early ;-)

I love the video of Kate trying to click her heels together. Another proof for her great sense of humour, just a little craziness. She's so personable.

I can't believe that this is the last week of the tour.... Time's running so fast! :-(

  2. I wonder what they will feel about these pictures being show around the world on their day off. I wonder if they knew the pictures were being taken. I think maybe kate will be embarrassed that there is a video of her doing the heel click thing!

I'm grateful you posted about this I think kate has a wonderful sense if humour!

    1. Hi simmy,
yes, I think they know. As they are so careful they have probably checked out where they could be photographed (even more after their experiences of September 2012). I think the situation is comparable to Kensington gardens.

I hope she isn't embarrassed of the video. It's so nice! (and she did it quite well ;-) )

    2. Hi Vicky yes I think you are right they are probably used to it by now and they know everyone is in love with them as a family! I also hope she isnt too embarrassed it shows her funny side, William did say she has a naughty sense of humor! :)

  3. One of the tweets said that William came out too and throw George in the air. Are there pictures of that too?

  4. Loved the random heel clicking thing! There was another video on instagram of Kate running with George on her shoulders. There was no sound but I could imagine the giggles that would've been coming out of him! It's really nice to see them doing normal things and I especially love seeing William and Kate holding hands <3

  6. These pictures were taken by someone who was obviously intruding on Kate and William's day off. It has to be difficult for them always wondering if there is someone lurking in the distance with a long lens. I can't help but think of what Diana went through when it was her they were "hunting". Was her tragic end all for naught? Have the lessons learned from her death been forgotten? Wondering if anyone still remembers the feeling of distain for the part the paparazzi played in the accident that killed her. Kate and William had the day off and were simply holding hands and playing with George. Is that so interesting and out of the ordinary that we need to see these pictures? It is clear how William feels about this sort of thing. I wish sites, fans of theirs and news outlets would back off on their private time. We're here to admire Kate's sense of fashion, not intrude on the family's private time. They've already been very open, welcoming and kind to let us see so much of the two of them and George on this tour. That should be enough. Let's not forget Diana. Thanks. Joan M.

    1. I agree with you largely, as I do think there needs to be more boundaries. However, I am okay with all these long lens photos...very different than the literal in-your-face cameras/paparazzi we saw with Diana and Kate when she was dating William. I do not like the up close as that is very invasive and dangerous. I don't agree with them being followed/hounded in vehicles (a la Diana). I don't agree with the long lens photos of them in France (the topless ones).

However, if they're in a somewhat public space (government house yard in Australia or Kensington Palace gardens) I think it is *somewhat* fair game as long as distance is respected. I think part of William's struggle is the invasion of privacy isn't right, but they also need to be friendly with the media. These kinds of pictures make us love them more - see media reports about these "private moments", we all eat them up and that raises the profile and popularity of the royal family. It's a necessary evil. Unfortunately, their "working appearances" wouldn't be enough to keep our attention to support the royal family (Buckingham palace visitors, etc) or visiting Westminster Abbey (and buying a Kate & Wills wedding book there like I did last year) or searching a charity they support. They also keep saying in interviews (or William at least) that they are "normal". We won't believe they are normal seeing them at working appearances or Kate possibly recycling a high street or designer item - we need to *see* them being normal to believe what they are trying to convince us of.

To wrap it up, what these photos taught me: they love each other and have an authentic relationship. She is a hands-on mom that is very interactive with her child (apparently there is footage of William playing with George I just haven't seen it). She has Diana elements that are probably a huge part of William's attraction to her. That heel kick made us love her more, and shows that goofy side Diana had with Charles, and Kate has with William. Although this time, we have much more evidence to show that this time around Kate and Wills stand a very good chance of a long, happy marriage :-)

    2. Basically I agree with you. To me it is important if the site where they were is public or not. I couldn't get any information about that so far (Maybe Jane knows). If it's public, I think it's ok to take photos. In times of smartphones and social networks you can hardly prevent it. Although I don't approve this development generally, everybody has to deal with it, especially the VIPs, of course. This is the price they pay for appreciation, fame and luxury. It might sound insensitiv but that's the way it is.
When Diana died I was too young. I don't know that much about the total hype on her. Paparazzi can be contumelious (and more) and I absolutely disdain what they did to Kate in 2012. But I fear being photographed in public is a thing they have to deal with or find a way to be protected.
They seem to be out of a fairy tale. Of course it is interesting to look behind. I fear that this is human. People are always enquiring.

I'm sorry for my english. It has been difficult to make this clear. I hope, it didn't sound insensitiv.

    3. P.S.: I totally agree with you, anonymous (wish I could have described it like you ;-) )

  7. Wow, what a pleasant surprise!! Thanks for being on top of this!!!

I watched the video from the Aussie morning talk show....did you hear the "royal correspondent" say "sexy times" in regards to William & Kate?! OMG!!!! I awkwardly LOL to myself! hahaha.

Anyway, I love Kate's randomness with the heel clicking (or Ninja kick?), and how when they think they're in private they're an affectionate couple. Plus there is proof she is so hands-on and interactive with George - you could tell during George's appearances, but that's proof it isn't just for the cameras.

    Happy Monday!

  8. Awww, such sweet photos! Given George's size, I bet Kate gets a great arm workout in while lifting him up. :)

    Thanks for sharing, Jane.

  9. Hi Jane,

Just a little something I noticed which sums up the press a little bit..... baby George when he was handed the orange plastic thing by Kate, he immediately put it towards his mouth as all babies do,and he's teething also. He was interrupted by Kate pulling it away playfully, and handing him a cuddly toy. He threw it down because he wasn't finished with the orange card thing. But u have to look very carefully and most viewers in the age of instant media never notice

The press have misconstrued the thing a little, by saying it was a 'tantrum' or whatever ,but it is perfect normal behaviour for a baby . This is how the press operates in a tough competitive business they have play things up a little for ratings.

  10. Since this tour is being funded by the Australian government, I doubt BP will complain...but you know they must b angry.

  11. Wow I love these pictures but I am torn. They do deserve private time but with the times being as they are, long photos lens will allow the media to take these photos. Hey they were holding hands, can you just imagine if Will gave Kate a long passionate kiss and it was caught on photo, then you might hear something from the palace. I think that is way you never see him kissing her where a photo could be taken. I am sure she get;s alot of them in private.

    1. First of all, if William had pulled Kate in for a long passionate kiss, it would have made my day. :) That has happened before, actually... remember outside that pub when they were dating? Since then, no. He is pretty careful.

  12. Hello! I was on tumblr today and came across an interesting opinion of these photos on one blog. The tumblr is objective and not anti-Kate, but does not necessarily "love her" . More so, the blogger would like to see her and William do more work. Anyway, they thought the pictures might be "staged" and William and Kate knew the photographers were there. Her other guess is the security is really lacking where they are staying if someone could just go and take pictures. I was just wondering if you had any thoughts. Do you think they could be stagged? I always love reading your posts on these types of things.

    1. My opinion is that they don't seem like the type to have staged this especially knowing what we know about William's feelings about the press. I don't think they would use George like this. At the very least, perhaps they did not care. Don't forget that modern cameras can do incredible things, like take pictures from very, very far away!

    2. Weren't the topless photos of Kate taken from more than a KM away?! Cameras these days can do amazing things!

    3. Hey there! I don't think they are staged, but I tried to answer your question in the next post. I hope you enjoyed it!! Thanks for asking, I am glad you read the blog and toss your questions out. I enjoy it! :)

  13. Oh Jane, you're the best. I was just hoping that there would be something about their down time on their day off. I actually like the down time reports better -- more relative to us regular blokes, you know. And here you come through again! God, how I wish I had her LEGS!

  14. Wow that is wrong to take a long lens photo of them in a private moment. I doubt any British media will publish it .....The foreign press still haven't learned.

Do you happen to know which Jeans and sweater Catherine is wearing? I think I've never seen them before..
    Thanks!

    1. I think the guess is that the sweater is Gap. They have a very similar one for sale and we obviously know she was juste hopping there before she left Britain. I haven't really examined the jeans yet, but they are bound to be jbrand or Zara. I'll try to look at sam elf he angles, I just haven't had time.

    1. Kristin, I am 98% sure they are Asics. Exact same swirl pattern on my shoes and I run in Asics. She wore these walking George in KP Garden and we got better look at that time. I can't be 100% certain, but I am really close to certain. :)
