The Middleton Medals!! Vote On Kate's Clothes! Royal Tour Week 1

Monday, April 14, 2014

I like competition and I like award shows. I always wanted to watch the Oscars growing up, but my mom wouldn't let us. Now, I am too ADD to sit through that much TV time, but I still love them in theory and always read the nominees and results! (Obviously, I sit for hours the morning after looking at the dresses, but that is fashion) And who doesn't love the Olympics?! Royal Tours are the Olympic Games of Royal Watching. Think about it: we are all glued to the seemingly constant and never ending action, it is often half a world away, and there are winners and there are...losers. Clothes, that is. BAFTA, Golden Globes, Oscars, Olympics...and now From Berkshire to Buckingham presents The Middleton Medals! I have included some music for you to listen to in the background to get you in the mood, click here for that, and let's get started.

Organization

Every ensemble is in the running, obviously.  I have awarded a Gold Middleton Medal to Best-Formal and Best-Casual.

We are injecting some democracy into this little monarchy! There is one category left and that is "READERS' CHOICE!" For this Middleton Medal, we are not breaking into categories: sorry, tough decisions will have to be made between those skinnies you adore and that tailored couture you are drooling over. Is that entirely fair? Nope, but neither are the Olympics or the Oscars, really. You know it's true.

How to vote

List your preference # in the comments, email if you believe in the sanctity of the secret ballot, or tweet me using hashtag #MiddletonMedals. Don't miss your chance to join the illustrious body of voting members on this first Middleton Medals. Recruit your friends, encourage your neighbors, and push your pick over the top! #GOTV, kids! Voting ends on April 15th at 5:30pm PST, 8:30pm EST, 1:30am London, and 2:30am Paris. (Voting extended to accommodate EST and Europe)

To appear unbiased, and to also act as the week's refresher, I present your nominees in the order in which they appeared:

#1 The Wellington Welcome Catherine Walker (You can't vote for anything based on George's cute factor...)

#2 Tory Burch for Plunket Playdate (That's a joke, you can base your vote on any factor. If you choose to besmirch the integrity of your vote by baby-bias, that is your prerogative)

#3 Cornflower McQueen in Blenheim

#4 Jenny Packham for State Reception

#5 Casual Kate Rules the Waves in Auckland Harbour

#6 Auckland Dressed Down

Governor-General of New Zealand Facebook

#7. "Kate Comes to Cambridge" Erdem

#8 Palm Sunday Service Emilia Wickstead

#9 "Rippa Rugby"

#10 Wine-Tasting

#11 River Ready

#12 Scottish Spagnoli

...and The Middleton Medal for "Best-Formal" goes to...

There was strong competition and I was torn between this and the incredible Spagnoli recycle, but Kate aimed to stun when she stepped off the plane in Wellington and that is what she did. This is still seared in my memory and deserves to take the gold despite the activity and distractions we have had since first encountering it. Congratulations, Wellington Welcome Catherine Walker Ensemble.

The Middleton Medal for Best-Casual goes to...

I am a sucker for Kate's skinnies and Sebagos. Add the darling Breton top with the ruching detail and I am sold. This was a pretty easy choice for me.

Your choice didn't win? Kate says sorry...

But, just like William, you have a chance to make a comeback. One more is going to be crowned princess-pretty from this pack.

  1. I would choose #2. The Duchess looked stunning in the Tory Burch and it was the first time seeing her interact with Prince George. Although, I think all of her outfits were awesome #2 stood out the most to me.

  2. I have a really hard time choosing between the Cornflower Blue McQueen and the State Visit Jenny Packham with the silver fern trim! I love both, but my vote is going to the black and silver Jenny Packham, just 'cuz its more "princesses!" Thanks for the fun blog!!

  3. #12 or #8 it's such a difficult choice! I think my vote will have to be #8 the Emilia Wickstead. Even though the dress has been worn before in a different color I just absolutely love the new color both in general and on her!

  4. I'm going to go for #12. I didn't like it when she wore it the first time but the longer hemline and modified fit of the jacket is a HUGE improvement. Love this look :)

  5. I vote for #8 because it's so colorful and festive (perfect for a grey day), she looks so classy in it, and especially because it's such a nice tribute to NZ - ferns on both hat and brooch, and from Emilia who is native to NZ. I also love the possibility that it could be a recycle/dye job; so awesome to think a princess might do that!

Thanks for this contest Jane; such a fun idea!

  6. Only because #2 was crowned I am choosing #4. I enjoy seeing new items. I know that being frugal and re-using items is important for the sake of public opinion and that is fine on the home front, but a tour is a time to really blow us away.

  7. Actually I need to change my vote. I had completely forgotten (until reading your Day 8 recap) about the significance of rewearing the Luisa Spagnoli in Christchurch. What a thoughtful gesture; and one that is so clever so as almost to go unrecognized. I have much respect for this type of symbolism. And of course I love how she reworked it this time around; you truly can see her evolution in it, just as the city of Christchurch too has evolved and bloomed again.

So if possible, I change my vote to #12!

  8. I just adore #9. Although I have really loved everything, I have to go with the one that I saw and thought, "Now that is the Kate I love!"

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh I just LOVE the Luisa Spagnoli. Loved it in Scotland and love it just as much in New Zealand!

  10. #12, though everything looks great...do I have to choose just one?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I vote for #1; I was wowed by it and haven't been wowed by anything since then. I do love the black dress with silver fern, (#4), but had hoped for something more princess-y.

  12. # 12 the Spagnoli suit. It has a lovely tailored fit.

    ReplyDelete
  13. #12 even if I also love the# 8...

  14. #12!! I didn't like it the first time but this time she really looked like a future queen!!

  15. #12 louisa spagnoli it has to be! She looked stunning and I loved it so much more this time, with the longer skirt and nude tights. I also loved the significance of wearing it again as well and she does looks so beautiful in red! I was torn between this and the Catherine walker in red but I loved the spagnoli. This was such fun Jane, we should vote on accessories including shoes!

    I vote for # 12. Absolutely gorgeous.
Though I also loved other outfits, especially the Tory Burch dress :-)

  17. Absolutely the Cornflower McQueen, my fave so far. But a close call, and I like the silver fern and the Scotish Spagnoli very much too. In fact, every outfit is a triumph and Kate is to be congratulated, she is doing brilliantly.

  18. I vote for #2. Love a little something I could wear ;)

  19. #3 Cornflower McQueen. A.

  20. I would choose #10. I have been impressed by #8 and #12 but as I love her wearing casual clothes, I have to vote for #10. I love the sporty-elegant combination!

By the way: The tour and commenting seemlö,.- to make me crazy. Last night I dreamt we were all invited to join the Duchess in a charity event and were able to have a private talk. LOL Unfortunately I woke up and the palace changed into my bedroom. I would have liked to stay there ;-)

  21. My best favourite one is #10. I also like very much #4, #5, #6, #9 and #12. Thanks for the music to listen to in the background. Very appropriated and much appreciated.

  22. Great idea Jane! Love having a voting day for your readers, while the jam packed tour finally allows the Cambridge's a day of down time. Love the changes Catherine has made to #12 Spagnoli. My second choice would be #7 Erdem green, since it is still in the H.R.H. Catherine's style, but with the long exposed zipper it has a bit of edge.

    ReplyDelete
  23. #12, Scottish Spagnoli!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Awfully difficult to make a choice, as I loved everything she has worn.
Decided at last on #1 as it sets the standard, plus the addition of George and William---what more could we ask?
For casual #11---love her hair and her expression.
I will probably have changed my mind later!

  25. Such a difficult call! I liked all the even numbers except 6. So 2, 4, 8, 10 and 12. Narrowing it down it will be 4, 8 and 12 and then it becomes really hard but I will go for 12!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I choose the Jenny Packham! I just loved it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The Teal Wickstead - hands down, no competition. That gorgeous hat deserves a category all of its own!

  32. #4 !!!! definitely !!

And I take the opportunity of this poll to write my first comment on this blog... though I have been reading it for almost 3 years now! It is like my reward at the end of the day (and sometimes during the day!) : I go on the internet, go to the blog and bam! I get acess to those incredible pictures of the Duchess, the fun, accurate analysis from the blogger (thanksssss) and the comments of everyone.

    Thank you so much Jane!

Also, does anyone have any idea what the shoes are that she is wearing in pictures.#9 Rip Rugby and #11 River Ready? I would love to have a pair of these. I love the color and the way they fit with skinny jeans. Would love to find these. Any one know the color and brand?? I have looked everywhere!!! Thank you for all your work and description following this wonderful couple. I loved Diana and followed her, but I am having even more fun this time around. We have the internet which helps see more!!!! Barbara

    1. Hello Barbara! Thanks for your vote! The shoes Kate is wearing are Mint Velvet plimsolls (http://www.mintvelvet.co.uk) I do not believe they are currently in stock, but the company does plan to re-relese the style, so keep an eye for those to come back on the market if you would like to snag a pair for yourself! I love them, too!
