Pippa (and James) Bike Across the United States

Friday, June 20, 2014

Let me just say before I speak another word that Pippa and James are the cutest...and what the heck is going on with that beard? Hello, how can James stand these tropical temps with that beard? I think it is because he looks like George V with it...

Sorry, I have been wanting to get that off my chest for a while... It is pretty hot in the the Midwest of the United States. It is possible that the 9th circle of hell is warmer, but I think the competition would be closer than the Nadal/Djokovic final from the French Open... It's hot. Nevertheless, the heat has not put off everyone's favorite royal sibling from competing in yet another jaw-dropping athletic feat. The Pipster is cycling with her team across the United States in the Race Across America. The course started in Oceanside, California and ends in Annapolis, Maryland. That, my venerable friends, is 3,000 miles and 12 states. It is daunting in a car, but bicycling...Vive l'Angleterre! The last few days saw them come through the Midwest as they sped across Kansas and Missouri, ending in St. Louis last night.

Pips was snapped in rural Missouri on a short break:

And with a very cute little Cards fan:

She was photographed zipping through St. Louis proper by local newscaster Leisa Zigman:

Skiing, running, bicycling, Pip inspires us all to push ourselves to the limit, but just this once, I am glad to be a back seat spectator. We don't often get to see James with either of his glamorous siblings, so it is fun to see these two competing together. The Middletons are famously close and they couldn't be cuter in this race. We are cheering for you, two!! Annapolis is the best town to relax in when it is over. Enjoy those bars while the Midshipmen are on break. ;) Nico is watching...

P.S. Kate was at Treehouse Hospice today. If you missed it, get caught up here.

xoxo, Jane

  1. I am always impressed by how close the Middleton siblings are. Michael and Carole did something right and are to be commended.

  2. My husband asked why we didn't go down to Oceanside (about 30 minutes away) when they started here, but I was like - to do what? Just say that I saw her in person? As big of a fan as I am, I couldn't imagine what I would do once I was there. Haha. But either way - I think this is super cool - and how in the world is she smiling?! It is so rare to catch her not smiling - even during grueling events! She must have spotted a camera (or she is just insanely chipper all of the time).

Side note - did you check out her personal fundraising page for this event? Super interesting to see the names of the folks who donated to her cause. :)

    As always - great post!

  4. I'll best this is just the sort of thing Kate would have loved to have done if she could; I can just imagine the three Middleton siblings whizzing across the US on their bikes!

  7. I remember photos of Kate in bike on her way to Party Pieces office when she was just dating William. She probably would have loved to join Pippa and James doing these kinds of stuff, suddenly she just can't because of her circumstances. It saddens me a bit, but I'm sure she's more than happy to be spending time with George and William.

    1. Her "circumstances"? I would love to be in her shoes and live her life of privilege. Please don't feel sorry for Kate, she is living the dream.

    2. She didn't go to prison, she made a choice. Let's not get carried away here.

    3. Well, I wouldn't trade the normalcy of my life and my privacy. Yes, it's a life of immense privilege, but it's also a lifetime of duty (think Queen Elizabeth and Duke of Edinburgh still working at 88 and 93 respectively), also one of intense scrutiny for her every action. Remember Princess Diana? She herself said it wasn't a fairytale, it is a job. It can take a toll on you if you aren't prepared and do not have the support system. Luckily for Kate, she seems more prepared and she has William and her family with her all the way. The Queen's cousin herself said that this isn't a fairytale. Even royal reporters who followed the royal family for years acknowledge the fact that marrying into royal family takes a special woman as it is not easy at all.

    4. @Sheri June I'm not trying to imply that in any way. I know she made a choice, and I admire her for that. Just saying that there are obviously things she cannot do now because of her circumstances and that's a fact, I think.

    5. No one said it was a fair tale, but few, very very few would give up the immense privilege they have so they didn't have to be working. It's a stretch to feel sorry for her.

    6. I think this may have moved far past the intent of the original statement, which was only to point out that Kate can't do a cross country bike race with her siblings. That's true, and mslex was just saying that is a bitter sweet reality. Also, true. I don't think it needs to be taken anywhere beyond that. I think we all agree Kate is a lucky girl, and we all agree that her life has some drawbacks. And we all agree that lots would kill for her privilege. :) And we agree that she chose her life and is very happy and content in that life. I really don't think anything beyond that was posited.

    7. @Sheri June This would be the last time, I'd be replying to this post. I've been following the royals for a long time, even before William and Kate got married and they do WORK. It's not an ordinary job obviously. They work through the royal tours, royal engagements they undertake and their royal patronages. The publicity also comes with the job and in their case it is an intense one. Again, I just said I feel kind of sorry that she's not able to do some things she probably would have normally done with her siblings, I don't understand why you seem so bothered about that. Neither am I imposing anyone to feel the same, that's just me.

    8. When you'd give anything to swap places with someone, you get mad if someone tells you there are drawbacks.
      It's very sad.

It's like getting furious at rich people being depressed - 'what do they have to be depressed about??? They're rich'

Please people. Let's be more reasonable than that.

    9. Jane, I appreciate you stepping in to referee this discussion, but it is a good conversation. I know everyone is being respectful to one another, but the point is that some people live very comfortable lives while others struggle. No matter what Kate does to help the plight of the downtrodden, at the end of her visit she gets into her chauffeured-driven car to her palace and her prince. She is a very lucky girl if her job responsibilities include getting her hair done, wearing beautiful clothes, and meeting with organizations once in a while. I think Kate is very likable, classy person, but I would never feel sorry for her. Let us keep things in the proper perspective. It pushes a button for those of us who understand how hard life can be for so many.

  8. Gosh, I live in Annapolis! It's so tempting to go look for her tonight! The park where they're finishing is on the water right downtown, a traffic nightmare on the quietest day. I wonder where they're staying. Good for Pippa and James -- that's quite a ride!

  9. Love the post, Jane! But the 9th circle of hell is cold, lady :) Sorry, I just couldn't let it slide...oh, how the literature major in me comes out at the most pointless times. Aside from that, yes, the USA is freaking hot right now. Sending cool breeze-vibes your way! :) My folks live in Annapolis, would it be worthwhile to ask them to go and take pics for me? Hmm...never hurts to ask. If I get any, will send to you! Thanks again for all your posts! ~Katie

    1. Katie, I haven't been called out on that since college... :) I will try to be more precise in my literature references again!
I don't think my family would do that for me, but if they do they get best-relative award! Definitely send some snaps if they do go out!

  10. Jane, thanks for your post on another interesting and sporty Middleton family member. I say kudos to Pippa and James for undertaking this daunting challenge. I think this is pretty brave of them because if they don't finish the challenge the media will be all over them so they must really be feeling the pressure.

I like James in a beard. It makes him look a bit older and a bit distinguished and yes, he looks an awful lot like George V. I liked William in a beard as well, his was cut closer but still a great look for him.

    1. I actually like it, too. For me it is just on the borderline of being too long, but thus far, I think he looks good. I approve of the more distinguished vibe. :)

  11. Is this a relay where not every member rides every mile? They take turns? It seems that they have crossed the U.S. pretty fast. Still, quite an achievement that I'd never be able to accomplish.

    1. Hi Kathy, yes, it is. They did not bike very single mile, but rode sometimes, biked others. They could never have made the time they did, I would think, had they had to put all the energy in. Still, an impressive feat. :) I could never, ever do it. Never!

  12. Pippa looks as flat chested as James in that outfit. I don't like the shorts with the circle right around the privates. It seems like a fun thing to do, and I admire her athleticism. James looks much better without the beard.

    1. Well, I have honestly never found bike-wear to be very flattering but I was amazed by how fresh-faced Pippa was throughout this "ordeal." She truly is in magnificent shape!
