First Birthday Photo Released of Prince George

Saturday, July 19, 2014

You probably remember the Kate sighting at the Natural History Museum on July 2nd. The Cambridges were spotted leaving the Butterfly Exhibit in the company of a photographer and speculation was strong that they were taking some 1st birthday snaps. Our hopes were gratified today when the royal couple released the first of purportedly three photos commemorating the little prince's first birthday.

Mr. Cutie-Pants undertook his second hardcore photo-shoot with a hair-do that would put Don Draper to shame. Our favorite tot looked his usual serious self, and he seemed to be on a mission. One guess as to whom this little man is determinedly marching... Can't you just see Kate behind the camera encouraging him to walk to mommy. It is the progression of his attitude already on display in Australia. When Kate handed George to William after they landed in Sydney, George started flapping his arms as she walked away. The headline read: "Watch While George Tries to Flap His Way Back to Mummy" It was too precious, and so true. Unable to walk, he still understood that motion was needed to get back to Kate, and did he want to get back to Kate. You can watch the clip here

The exciting news is that on Monday night, in anticipation of his 1st birthday on Tuesday, the couple will release the last two photos, which are reportedly family photos! So, we are getting a Kate shot in just about 48 hours! Better still, as you remember from the candids from the Butterfly exhibit, we will finally get a good look at the green Suzannah tea dress that has been such a coy little number for so many months. One of my readers made the good point that this dress will probably sell out on Tuesday, so if you want it, go get it now

This week we also had some other very awesome photos of the baby prince being walked in a stroller in Hyde Park by Nanny Maria. I saw the snap, but then lost the link. Thankfully, wonderful reader Alex came to my rescue, (Alex, you are da best). If you haven't seen the precious little guy's faces from this outing definitely pop over to the completely incomprehensible Tumblr to enjoy. All photos can be found here. (These photos have yet to surface on an actual news source. Because the royals will now eject a photographer from the royal rota for taking candids, these photos were unlisted--but I have my suspects. ;) Thank you--we love these photos!) George seems to be in good shape to be as expressive and charming as his ridiculously beautiful mother.

  1. George gets cuter all the time, and is getting a nice head of hair too:)

I love how Kate dresses him, with the blue and white pinstripes now, and the smocking when he was younger.

He is walking pretty early, isn't he? He definitely is a curious little go-getter! Remember when Prince Harry had the cut on his forehead from falling down?

    Happy 1st birthday little Prince!

    1. I am not a baby expert. i think he is pretty on track for walking. 11-12 months is what I believe to be average, but...I am willing to believe he is exceptional in every way/ ;)

  2. Jane you are most welcome! I never have understood tumblr but I'm glad I was able to catch those! I know they're invasive and intrude on the privacy but I find it so difficult to resist when he just looks so darn adorable! Plus it's so great to just see him out and about like in his birthday photos just toddling around. I'm sure he really enjoyed going to the butterfly exhibit and if it was anything like the zoo in Australia I bet Kate and William enjoyed watching him.

    1. yes, I am sure they had some nice family time either before or after the photo shoot. I had hoped for a picture with George interacting with the butterflies, but again, probably there is a private photo of that. :)

  3. Jane, he is so adorable. Do you see more Middleton or Windsor in him? I have been hearing a lot of people think he looks like William, but also people arguing for Middleton. Love the blog, of course!

    1. Isn't he a cutie?! I see a mix, certainly. I have always seen more Middleton than Windsor, honestly. Kate and Michael predominantly, but I also see resemblances to both William and Harry in their baby photos. he has grown a lot since the tour, so I am still getting used to the more mature little George. :)

  4. I think he's a perfect blend of Middleton and Windsor. There are pictures where he looks one way or the other. There was one in Australia where I thought he looked just like Prince Harry at the same age. In this one, I think he looks a lot like Grandpa Middleton. A very beautiful blend of the two. And isn't that the way it should be? A very Hapoy Birthday Prince Cheeks!

    1. I agree! Different moments reveal different resemblances, which is one of the amazing and very fun things about children, I think. :)

  5. @ Anon at 9;02 PM In my opinion, George looks more like Kate. Take a close look at his mouth; I see the same skin creases/brackets that his mother sports. Take a look at his nose; at the same age, even younger, it was obvious that the tip of Wills nose drooped a bit, like his fathers; not so re George. As for his eyes...well, brown is not a William/Windsor colour.

I do see a bit of William tho. The shape of the eyebrows, the colour of his hair, the short neck; however, George has strawberry blonde hair, whereas William had white-blonde hair as an infant--good chance that the strawberry blonde will darken, and Mike Middleton also has a short neck.

One trait which I hope George has inherited from his father is height.

I suspect that it is too soon to declare which parent George will wind up most resembling as an adult, but facially, now, he seems to me to look more like his Mom.

    1. This is pretty thorough analysis, and I agree. Good point about the future, too. He could change markedly between now and full maturity.

    2. Just an interesting note on resemblances-they say human babies most resemble their fathers (especially facially) around their first birthdays. In our distant "tribes on the savannah past", this was a way to ensure that fathers would claim paternity by recognizing a child as theirs.

Gorgeous George is a total cutie. I hope the Cambridges are really enjoying him because he'll grow up so fast!

Thanks for the great post, Jane! Cheers to all!

  6. It's so cute!! Such a nice photo!!
It has been a great idea to do the shooting at the exhibition: Curious infants often are the best behaved, so it is easier to take a nice snap ;-)
I also hoped for a pic with butterflies involved. Maybe they will still come up or the chosen one's are more predicative. We'll see.. I'm looking forward to the next two!

This pair of shoes must be George's most favourite. He always wears them and they look battered. Probably he walks the best in them. It's likable Kate and William didn't mind he wore them for the official photos!

    1. Yes, he has scurfy shoes! Sometimes people complain that Kate's shoes ate a little battered... like mother, like son. :) I am super excited for the next two. I love the family shots!!

  7. Hi Jane, thanks for the great post! This past year has certainly flown by, it seems like yesterday, Kate & Will were walking out the hospital to introduce George to the world. What a special moment, Kate looked so emotional on the steps of the hospital, so proud and probably so tired.

George sure is a cutie, but he has a look about him that tells me he is quite a hand full for his parents! I feel that he has a personality more like his Uncle Harry than either of his parents, if so the next 18 years or so should be a fun time. Also it will be interesting to see how Kate and Will handle that. I would love to see a picture of him really smiling, I don't think we've seen one to date, maybe one of the two yet to be released will have him really grinning it up!

I am really looking forward to the release of the next two photos, hoping to get a better look at that tea dress!

    1. I have to say, I am so excited for Kate and the tea dress...and Kate and George. I do love the family photos where they re interacting. Rare and so cute. I agree about his personality, I think he is a pretty precocious little guy. There are probably some interesting events to come in our royal watching... :)

  8. Jane,

What do you think about the royals stating that any photographer that takes photos of them during their off duty time will not be allowed to join the press pack at official events? It seems rather heavy handed to me but I'd love to get your opinion on it.

    1. Well, I don't like it either. I think it is too extreme, but it is smart thinking. I do look at the whole pap photos as very much a "cold war" or a competitive game between photographers and the public and the royals. We want candid snaps, they want to minimize them. There are parameters to the war/game. Each team has to play by the rules. If you can score while staying within the parameters, props to you. Both sides can go too far. When William complains about park pictures in Edinburgh, or is offended by street snaps that is a foul on the royals. Obviously he should expect that--tough luck for him. When the photos of Kate were taken in France, that was a MAJOR foul on the pap/media world. This rule that you can't take candids and stay in the press pack is just on the border. It is clever and annoying and a score for the palace, but I think it is just within the rules. Thankfully, the photographers still take the shots and just withhold the name. BUT, i don't like it. I think really the bigger issue would be if they enforced it rigidly. It sets a bad precedent. If they rigidly enforce it, then I think it wouldn't be right. At the moment is just seems to be a deterrent that no one has pushed too far, but taken to the extreme, it could damage royal PR, which would be a problem. We will have to see how things god as time moves forward...

    2. Don't you think press organizations will just employ two types of photographers? One for official engagements who holds credentials and one who snaps them around town? I don't think it really solves anything for the royals. Quite honestly, there is such a saturation of "official" photos - that the paps would be able to get a greater price for their candids. Is this ban for specific photographers -- or is it for the organization that publishes the images? Perhaps I am not understanding how the ban would work.

    3. Jane,
Thank you so much for your honest opinion, I certainly agree with you that this issue seems to be some sort of cold war between the press and KP. I have read, on another reliable site, that relations between KP and the press is very strained at this time. I don't know if that's due to the communication staff at KP or W&K themselves. I also agree that the pictures taken of Kate in France certainly crossed all lines and any action the royals take against those who took the pictures or posted them is certainly justified. I don't want to be offensive but this type of action makes William seem paranoid and reactive, instead of seeking a mature way to deal with the press.

      Lucy,

You make a good point, press organizations could just employ two types of photographers and if W&K banned the organizations from the press pack then there would be no one left to help highlight their charities and good works. I agree with you about the saturation of "official photos", every site and paper has the exact same ones, it makes me wonder why. I mean you'd think there would be different angles at least, but mostly it's the exact same picture over and over again.
