Wills, Kate, and Harry Spend the Day at the Commonwealth Games

Monday, July 28, 2014

As scheduled, our second favorite royal trio, (only recently dropping from first place after the arrival of a certain chubby-cheeked little man) are in Scotland today. The Earl and Countess of Strathearn, accompanied by Prince Harry, attended the first of two planned days at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

I have to say that I find something comforting in Kate's adherence to a sport "uniform." I too have certain outfits for particular types of events that I go back to again and again and again; I am sure many others do as well.  I understand that there seems to be a certain boredom with the whole ensemble, but honestly when I sat down to think of ways she could switch it all up, I didn't have a very large range of options. Part of the problem that Kate faces is one we all face...change one element and you toss the balance of the look. Still, she has added variety in the past:
Times Kate has broken from her habitual blue skinnies and blazer include...The polka dot blouse and red blazer at the Olympics. We haven't seen this since, so I rather suspect it was one of those times she jumped in with both feet, but found the water too tepid to her taste. It certainly was a lot going on for the usually more subtle Duchess:

...her blue skinnies and Olympic T:

The white skirt from the archives. This was the first and last we have seen her watch a sporting event (excluding Wimbledon, of course) in a skirt.

I liked very much these bold red trainers with the matching red top. It was striking without overwhelming, which is always a good balance:

These tangerine skinnies when she popped in for a short visit at Olympic Park. On that occasion she showcased the colorful jeans both more formally with heels, a blazer, and scarf...

And more relaxed in trainers and a sport top on the turf:

I really loved the coral skinnies with the blazer. It was the right pop of color, she was radiant, and the scarf added just the touch to pull it all together very smartly. It was a major success. I would be happy to see that again. Frankly, I would be very happy if she just wore flats. She looked darling in those flats in Auckland. I think she is probably trying to create a certain professional-but-dressed-down look, which she is doing very well, but I wouldn't mind the flats. It was a very cute.

So, there are some variations that Kate could play, but ultimately it is a fairly narrow scope. There just aren't the same possibilities when you are going to be seated in stadium chairs half the day as there are for the average public engagement. But hey, back to today. It was her Zara skinnies and blazer, her Stuart Weitzman Corkswoons, the Russell & Bromley "Muse" clutch, and her citrine drops from Kiki McDonough.

Kate was wearing an as yet un-identified sleeveless, striped top.

Handsome Harry charming the onlookers:

The fun thing about these sports events is that although we do not get the same fashion fun, we always have fantastic little interactions between the Cambridges. It is hard to say for certain what William was whispering to Kate, but...

This is the face he got out of it...

Yes, that is William's hand on Kate's knee. Yes, they are still pretty much the cutest couple out there.

Kate: "William, the cameras! The CAM-er-as!"
Wills: "I do not care!"

William seemed in pretty high spirits most of the day. While Harry is usually the one who is egging his brother and sister-in-law into giggle fits, Wills was doing a good job of stealing the role:

The Royals are issued passes, just like everyone else. Well, perhaps not just like everyone else. I believe Kate's pass says: distinguished guest, which is certainly not an understatement.

A lot of us wonder what cellphones the royals use, since they are almost never photographed holding one. I haven't seen Kate carry a cellphone since before she married. Today, we got a glimpse of what I am fairly certain is hers. Whether they were engrossed by a picture of George throwing cheerios at home, checking stats on one of the athletes, or Googling good places for a quick bite afterward, one thing is certain: that is not an iPhone. :(  (I have it on reliable information that this is a Samsung Galaxy S5...talk about awesome product placement.)

The royals skipped around to a number of events over the course of the day. The schedule was not released beforehand to help security keep everything in hand, but they attended gymnastics, boxing, hockey, and swimming...

I will be updating toward the end of the day!

  1. Personally, I'm happy to skip the fashion show for all of those priceless expressions on our lovely Duchess. Those pics of her watching the boxing match are hilarious. She must be a hoot to watch a horror movie with! Happy to see them out together, just three in a crowd, supporting the Scottish games.

    1. I agree. And I love how well all three get along. Harry and Kate are clearly close and Harry and William are close and together all three of them have this fabulous and fun dynamic. You just want to hang out with them. :)

    1. She has worn it a lot, yes. I like it, but one of these days she will get tired of it and suddenly do something else...I am sure I will like that, too. :)

  3. Dear Jane,

I am so sorry but I have to disagree with you today, this outfit was soooo boring. I hoped, I prayed that she would not wear the same faded skinny jeans she seems to be so fond of, but my prayers were not answered today. Sigh I get that she has "uniforms" that she is comfortable with, we all do, but at least the pants aren't faded and baggy at the knees. I mean, I would still wear them but then I'm not representing a country at a high profile sporting event. And the more I see her wearing these tall wedges at sporting events the more ridiculous they seem to me. Don't get me wrong, I like the wedges but not when flats or trainers would be more appropriate. I also think a fun, summery clutch would have worked better. This suede one screams winter/fall to me and is a bit formal, not suited to a day watching sports.

On the plue side her hair looked great today! And I loved the interaction between Kate and Will, the hand holding, the whispering, the looks, too cute for words. Also, it's always nice to see them out and about with Harry, they really seem to get along so well and enjoy each others company. We seriously need to find him a girl so then it would be the Fabulous Foursome!!

    1. Totally agree. She has lost her fashion sense the first time when she turned up into these wedges at a sport event. She cares about her hair which looked awesome today, should go out shopping for a decent pair of trousers for God's sake. She is not a girl next door any more but a future queen. LOL A.

    2. I too agree with the outfit - boring boring boring. She needs to start looking into anything else. This is just disappointing on all grounds. I did love her facial expressions and interaction with both the boys. Its always nice to see a little contact between 2 people who are still so in love with each other.

    3. I agree Lauri --- here's my take:

Oh dear god, please retire this outfit already!

At least change up the colors, please. We know she has a different colored pair of jeans and a different colored blazers from before her wedding. Why not wear a pair of white skinny jeans, white sleeveless and a tan-colored or light blue colored or even light green colored blazer from her pre-wedding/college days with a pair of cute flats? Mix it up a little. We get the uniform, but at least change the colors.

If she wears navy blue tomorrow, I'm going to scream.

    4. Hi Lynn,

I remember the white jeans from her pre-marriage days and you are so right, that would be a great look for her. Summery and fresh but very fashionable!! Since we are both in Ca, when we scream we might hear each other. lol

    5. Hi Lynn, hi Lauri,

I too like the idea of the white jeans. I loved them on her and I also like wearing them. I agree with you, Lauri: Summery, fresh, fashionable :-)

Although I'm far away and we definitely won't hear each other you can be sure: I'm going to scream, too!! ;-)

    6. I'm very tired of the tight skinny jeans, too! I loved her white jeans and would love to see her wear them again! Straight legged or even slightly flared jeans and pants would be a very nice change on her.

    7. I might be the only one, but I just don't have any problem wight he wedges. I wouldn't wear them, but I think she loves them and it seems her way to dress the whole look up. There are certainly ways she could switch this up, certainly. As I mentioned, the coral skinnies were fabulous, but different jackets could also inject a fresh vibe. I suspect we will see her experiment in the next year or so.

She isn't going to wear flared jeans anytime soon. She hasn't for years--since before she was married. (Well, aside from the jeans she wore in Canada that needed to fit over her cowboy boots) Jean silhouettes are interesting things--there is very little crossover for most women. I have a lot of boot cuts and flared from college in my closet. i wear them around the house, etc, but I would never wear them to see people or if I wanted to feel polished. Skinnies are still dominating fashion. And Kate particularly LOVES skinnies.

  4. Hi Jane, thank you for this wonderful post. I liked to see the different sport outfits altogether. That was so interesting. And you again chose the best photos from today - awesome.
Today's fashion...sigh.... ok, I understand your argument of feeling comfortable and rewearing what works - both good arguments. But, to be honest, I've been deeply disappointed by todays fashion choice. I'm a huge fan of the outfit with the coral skinnies (I still try to copy it) - I hoped for something like that. But there had to be just a little difference, an exciting, maybe new, element as it has been an announced appearance today and not a private visit. Because that's the difference between me wearing my favourite outfit and the Duchess of Cambridge, fashion icon, wearing an outfit. The top looks nice but is nothing thrilling, so.....Bummer! But I have to admit - Chapeau, Kate - this woman seems to go her own way. You kind of have to dare to always wear the same thing :-)
That said I like your idea of Kate wearing flats. What about her London sole flats?! I love them and they are so nice on her.
I'm conciliable with the appearance because seeing these two (or three) interacting is so funny and cute! Great expressions! They seem to have so much fun together. Thumbs up for that!

    1. Oh Vicky, I forgot all about her London sole flats, they would be totally adorable and appropriate for a sporting event. Good call! I would love to get a pair but they only seem to come in narrow widths and my wide foot wouldn't fit:(

    2. Dear Jane,

thank you from me, too, especially for all these outfits at sports-related events. :-)

As for the coral skinnies, I suppose that Catherine, William and Harry might have on purpose not put on any type of red as this colour is often associated with England. So they might have wanted to stick to the colours of the Commonwealth, of the Glasgow Games and of Scotland.

Fortunately, I have no problem whatsoever with rewears. :-)

  5. There are even more cute photos on the DailyMail sight of them holding hands and William pulling Kate's i.d. card. It is kind of sad that such a big deal is made when they do show PDA. The Royals from Denmark and Spain show PDA all the time, I wish that William and Kate would not be so afraid to do it. Though I am sure the Queen has a rule or two about it. Again, it is sad since they are a young couple. My husband and I are always holding hands and so forth. It just feels natural.

As for this outfit, I was praying that those ugly wedges would not make a comeback and they did. I agree flats would look nice or even a different pair of wedges. This outfit is getting really boring. It was a casual event, I don't think she should have even worn the blazer. William and Harry were both really laid-back in the style department today, so Kate could have dressed down a little more as well if she had wanted. Oh well, just my opinion. If she wanted to wear a blazer, a nice cream one would have been a great change!! I think the navy jeans with the navy blazer, the navy wedges and navy clutch gets to be way too much navy. Some color changes would do wonders to freshen up this outfit. On a side not though, I think it is really sad that it looks like Kate went the botox route. Her expressions are not quite as mobile as they used to be around the forehead. Also, she had some predominant lines on her forehead/between the brows and now they are gone. It makes me sad because it seems like everyone in the public eye feels the need to do it, which then makes me wonder if I am going to have to as well. It seems like the norm now. I had thought the royals might be different, but alas I was wrong. Just something I noticed today. :(

    1. Hi Erin,

I agree, I too wish W&K would show a little more PDA. I almost fell of my couch when they held hands during the Christmas walk to church, so unexpected. I personally don't think it's the Queen so much, Edward & Sophie regularly hold hands, as it's a habit from their college days when they made a pact never to hold hands or show PDA in public. Also, I think William has some paranoia about the press and keeping their private time private, etc.

I don't know about the whole botox theory though. The pictures here and on the DM were too far away to really tell if she had lines/wrinkles or not. Dame Helen Mirren is in her 60's, has very visible wrinkles/lines but ask any man alive and they all think she is one sexy woman. I've noticed women that use botox regularly start looking alike, it's the weirdest thing! That being said, I really hope Kate doesn't succumb to the pressure to be line-free but instead embraces the lines/wrinkles that show a life well lived.

    2. Hey Lauri,
Lol, I had the same reaction when I saw them holding hands on Christmas:). You are probably right about William having some paranoia about the press. That makes sense. I do know though that the Queen is all about the British showing no real emotion, she likes that to be kept in private. She is very stoic, which made me wonder if she tells her kids and grandkids to keep it to a minimal. I guess we will never really know though. Ahh to be a fly on the wall in the palace;)

There is one picture on the DailyMail article that has a close up of Kate squinting, where all the lines from her forehead and between the brows are gone. They were very prominent before, which made me think she did get botox. It is about halfway down the article, when they are watching the hockey match. William is puckering his lips and she is making face (with no lines;)). http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2708449/Young-royals-Wills-Kate-Harry-jet-Glasgow-seats-men-s-gymnastics-Commonwealth-Games.html. I agree women start looking alike. I just wish that it was okay for women to age naturally. It is hard not to succumb to it. I am afraid though that Kate may have felt the pressure. If I had more money I may do it too:(. I love Helen Mirren, but she was lucky in the sense that she was aging in a different time period. In today's culture the pressure is even more to stay young and perfect. I know it is weird, but I always pay attention to women in the media's lines because I like seeing them. I actually noticed Kate's awhile back that she may have started botox. When William and Kate went to the Whiskey distillery her lines on her forehead stopped abruptly halfway across. So one side had lines, while the other side was smooth. http://i.huffpost.com/gen/1825253/thumbs/o-KATE-MIDDLETON-570.jpg (its not the best picture, but the only one I could find in a hurry). It made me think she was first testing it to see how it looked. And then today they were completely gone. Who knows if she is or is not, but I wish she wouldn't.

    3. I think you may be over reading it to say she may be partaking in Botox. Remember that photos online are often heavily photoshopped.

    4. I never noticed the missing lines and I really hope they are photoshopped!! I go off thinking of today's understanding of beauty and how one should look like! I hope Kate does not jump on that train! We need women, or rather idols, like Kate Winslet who remain true to themselves and their naturalness!!

  9. Nice to see William and Kate looking so happy. I've said before that I'm no fan of skinny jeans for public events. I think they look very un dignified. Adding those wedges just makes it that much worse. I'm a fan, I want to cheer for Kate, but I cannot when she dresses like this.

  12. I don't think the skinny jeans are either appropriate or flattering for an official event. She has a wonderful figure, but the muscles showing under the tight jeans are not elegant, especially with the wedges. And I agree that the whole outfit is way too navy. But clearly she likes it!

  13. I love your analysis Jane - my own view is that those wedges are dated and not even very practical, so no reason to keep wearing them, and although I get her uniform and dressing appropriately, she needs to move on. Also, I personally hate double breasted blazers :) If she must wear old shoes, the boat shoes would look so much better. Can't wait for today's outfit... !

  14. I personally do not like those chunky wedges, however, Kate obviously does and must feel comfortable in them, so I will not criticize. I love to see her in new outfits but don't get the criticism she receives for wearing the same thing to similar occasions. I feel that they are not "on official business" so she should be able to wear whatever she wants. All of us have "go-to" outfits that we reach for. She is no different. And if she likes it and William likes it, then who are we to complain?

  15. As usual I was cracking up at your hilarious commentary, Jane. "The CAM-er-as!" "I do not care!"

It was awesome to see Wills in such a playful and fun mood. I absolutely love when William and Kate go to sporting events - the laughter, the facial expressions, the PDA. I love seeing them have fun in a casual environment. That stuff means so much more to me than any outfit ever could.

I happen love Kate's standard sporting event uniform. It seems to me that she is making an effort to keep the attention on the event/athletes, which I applaud. There is only one teensy change I would like to see, and that is either some great flats, her Sebagos, or her adorable trainers from the Olympics (not that I don't like the Corkswoons). Her new blouse was terrific.

But the real star of the show was her hair!!! It was stunning, and a throwback to the famous blowout with curls that I dearly miss. In my opinion this is the perfect length and color for her. There seem to be a lot of layers at the bottom, which always gives her hair great body and movement.

Looking forward to the next post!

I don't mind the Corkswoons, either, but I would be happy to see the trainers or Sebagos. She looks so cute in them. I thought the same thing about her hair, too! It was great. I miss the world famous, bouncy, Kate curls. :) Glad you weighed in! xoxo, Jane
