[Updated] Kate Cambridge News & Notes: Royal Visit to NYC? Will Kate Attend the Singapore State Banquet?

Monday, October 6, 2014

Updated: People magazine is reporting that the NYC trip is a possibility for William, not Kate, but that now Kate may accompany William:
The trip, set for later in the fall, may even see him bringing wife Kate with him. Although she has not been part of the original plans, it's believed that the palace isn't ruling out anything where she is concerned. A "open mind" is being kept as to whether she will also travel, a royal source says.
This makes a lot more sense. William has been stepping up his profile as a senior royal for the past year, including more engagements and tellingly standing in for the Queen at investiture ceremonies, after his debut in October of last year. It would be within the realm of the reasonable that William would undertake a brief visit to New York if the charities he has been trying to highlight have event(s) where he could really draw some attention with his star power. His mother made several trips to New York for just such reasons. It isn't clear to me what would make Kate change her mind and accompany William, but I think we would all be over the moon if she did. Hopefully, confirmation will be forthcoming.

Another week begins, and in the absence of any confirmed engagements comes the rumor, via The Mirror, that William and Kate are planning a trip to New York before the end of the year. While I don't immediately dismiss a story like this, after all, it is not inconceivable that Kate would visit New York, the timing leaves one a little skeptical.

If a trip of this nature were planned, it would have been on the books before Kate became pregnant. Furthermore, after a massive overseas tour Down Under in April, and then a month of rest followed by the great August Exodus, it seems like the royals would have scheduled charities and events closer to home to finish out the year. Not to mention the fact that, had all gone well, Kate would have recently returned from a relatively momentous trip to Malta. That many engagements abroad in one year would be extremely uncharacteristic for the Cambridges. My feeling is the rumor is just that, a rumor.

Kate at an Art Room Event in 2012

I have a sense that this month has several unannounced engagements sitting dormant, waiting to either pop or fizzle. I will not be surprised if we have a few more same-day cancellations, just like we did on Wednesday when she pulled out of an event at the Clore Art Room. Under normal circumstances, Wednesday's engagement would have been announced about two weeks out, but they just kept it private until the day-of, hoping against hope that Kate would take a turn for the better. Regrettably, this was not the case.

One event that you should be holding your breath over is the State banquet this month. The Queen proffered an invitation to the President of the Republic of Singapore (pictured above during the 2012 tour) for a State visit to the United Kingdom, which he accepted. The visit is scheduled to happen the 21st-23rd of October. The Queen usually hosts two "incoming" State visits each year, the first was the Irish President's visit in April. A State banquet is held in honor of the visitor the night of his or her arrival, and this is quite a formal affair: white tie.

Kate and William undertook their second overseas tour to Southeast Asia, and among their stops was, of course, Singapore. So, this is an event we had a solid chance of seeing both the Cambridges attend, and Kate's appearance at the lavish banquet would almost certainly include a tiara. That all hangs in the balance now, as she works through hyperemesis gravidarum. For her sake (foremost) and for ours, I am fervently praying she is well be well by the 21st...and planning to attend.

Finally, there has been an extraordinary hubbub over the legal battle that Prince William is threatening to kick-off against Niraj Tanna, a photographer William claims has been stalking and harassing Prince George. We might get into this later in the week...

  1. I sure hope Kate gets well soon. I bet many are having withdrawals not seeing her.
We have not seen or heard much about William either. Any ides what he has been up to besides going to a wedding. Isn't he getting ready to take done exams for his new job. Any idea when they will be moving to Amber house. They will get privacy then.
Also do you have anything on Willis solo trip to Kenya. I read about it on another blog. I think it is a bad idea for him to go and leave Kate and George at home again. And the fact his ex love lives there and the fact he went on a hunting trip last yr when it was said he could not go on a trip with Kate and George. But he sure found time to be with Jecca. Bad idea in my opinion.

    1. Hi Kathy,

I read somewhere that he has to take 14 exams by Christmas for his new job, so he's probably busy studying for them. Also, are you confusing his hunting trip to Spain when Kate and George went to Mustique? I haven't heard anything about him going to Kenya since he and Kate got engaged.

    2. He carried out an Investiture at Windsor one day last week---think it was Thursday. One of the recipients of an honour was the head of the Royal College of Midwives. He mad some remark about needing her help.

    3. Laura from CA. No confusing his hunting trip. He went hunting with some friends and Jecca joined William. Bad idea. At the time he was at Cambridge and said he could not get away but once Kate and George was gone he left on his hunting trip. Just a little funny to me.

    4. Kathy,

Yes, but that was in Spain not Kenya. And yes, Jecca was there with her boyfriend. I don't think it was anything devious as he was away from school for only a couple of days but Kate and George were gone much longer. If William was to "step out" on Kate I think he would be much smarter in arranging it and certainly wouldn't be with someone from his past, much too obvious.

    5. He can't go to Kenya because his ex lives there? That's crazy. I doubt that Kate is that needy.

  3. I, too, believe the NY trip is a rumor, but obviously time will tell. The thought of seeing Kate in a tiara makes me giddy with delight. Thanks for your diligence, Jane!

  4. Hi Jane, I too think the trip to NY is a rumor, like you said they would probably focus their energies closer to home. As Kate has been scheduling her engagements for the first two weeks of the month and taking the rest of the month off, if she doesn't attend one this week or the next I don't think we will see her attend any until maybe next month. It seems as though her HG is lasting longer with this pregnancy than with George, could be twins!!

  5. The banquet table is overwhelming. There's a big, expensive and rather church-looking mess. I cannot find it beautiful or splendid. It looks like somebody put all tableware, candleholders or other golden things he'd found in the palace. And the flowers too big and too much. I know it's the old tradition but it looks odd. The guests look like they were sitting in a colourful jungle.

  6. Hey Jane,

I see that we've finally settled a last name for Kate, I like it!!

  7. Now all I can think about is Kate wearing a tiara!!!

  8. We desperately and absolutely need a new pic of kate cambridge (like it!) with a tiara 'cause the last one is not really flattering....

The banquet is in a fortnight from now though!

  9. I really think we can discount any appearance by Kate at the up-coming Singapore State Banquet; even if Kate is beginning to recover from the worst of her HG, the smell of all that rich food could do her in and certainly eating it would.

Kate is still clearly under-the-weather; according to The Express, Kate, or rather, her staff of one, Rebecca Deacon, has just announced another cancellation--she was slated for an engagement having to do with Ben Ainslie and sailing next Monday. Kate is a keen sailor, she and Sir Ben seem to have hit it off, and IMO only a team of wild horses or rampant HG would have caused Kate to pull out of this.

Re the trip to NYC, I am confused. First mentioned by The Mirror, on Oct. 4, which seemed to suggest that this was a trip planned for Kate, solo, People Mag is now suggesting that this trip was a trip planned for William, solo, altho the Mag was careful to state that Kate may accompany him--as a sort of afterthought, if she is well enough. According to The Mirror, the trip is scheduled for the end of Nov./early Dec. By my rough reckoning, that would put Kate at the 16-week mark, maybe doable, maybe not--and maybe why this trip has suddenly become Williams.

People Mag has also very recently stated that Kate is now residing in Bucklebury with her parents--and, if true, probably with George. Question: What sort of husband is William? Apparently, the sort who is only too happy to hand over his primary responsibility as husband and father to others. I am SO unimpressed. JC

    1. Or he is the kind of husband who accepts the fact he will have to miss his wife and child but it is for the sake of her well being. I think william is away a lot for his training and other duties and being alone with hg and with a toddler doesnt sound very nice.

  10. Unfair to question what sort of husband William is, Kate has a long history of not coping and running home to mum, I would imagine to avoid any stress he just takes the easy route and lets her.

  11. @Anon Oct 8 at 12:56 AM This is a perfectly valid question, IMO, and you seem to be rather biased in Williams favour; Kate could just as easily choose to retreat to Bucklebury for the TLC she never gets from her husband. Have you ever considered the possibility that William is just a chip off the amoral block? JC
