Séraphine Scores a Smash Hit as Kate Dazzles on Her Day in Kensington

Monday, January 19, 2015

I am tempted to call it perfect and let that be the entirety of the post. I think everyone is swooning over this one. Today, Kate was busy with three separate engagements around the Kensington area. This is my favorite photo of the day: Kate arriving for her first event. I love morning sunshine, golden and warm, brimming with the energy and potential of a fresh day...a new beginning. It's also gentle, and great for photography.

The Duchess kicked off the morning with a visit to Family Friends. She was there for a coffee-date with volunteers at the charity which provides a friendship/mentoring service to disadvantaged families.

Often, Kate will wear a coat and dress and never take the coat off, much to the disappointment of fans. Today was one of the rare occasions she did take her coat off. This cute little guy was all set to give Kate her flowers, but at the last moment had a shy-attack and his mother had to sub for him.

Next, Kate officially opened the Kensington Aldridge Academy. Below is a video of her arrival taken by People magazine's Simon Perry:

During the day, according to Richard Palmer of The Express, Kate mentioned she has been feeling her baby move, and Rebecca English added that Kate said, "It's moving all the time, I can feel it kicking now."

Kate concluded her slew of engagements at the Kensington Leisure Centre, where excited children called, "here come Kate" as she arrived.  She has spent a great deal of time with new charities over the course of this engagement spree. I wonder if she is researching new charities, possibly prepping to announce new patronages after the birth of her second child. More than one person has remarked on how nicely these organization match Kate's work and interests. To be developed, I suppose...

@RBKC

Kate emerged this morning in Séraphine, and as is always the case when she wears the luxury maternity label, the ensemble was perfect. This is endlessly elegant on Kate, and could not be more flattering.

As we have discussed, the Duchess has carved out a style she obviously prefers for maternity wear. She has really started to put together that style well, but today's look is more to my taste, and frankly more what I had expected from Kate. The day she stepped out for her first engagement after her HG bout with George, she was wearing that grey MaxMara wrap, and I thought we would see that style continue. Instead, she veered in another direction, but every now and again, she returns. The DVF at the Royal Variety Performance, the Séraphine in New York...today.

Of all the colors in the crayon box, blue is perhaps one of the more high-maintenence hues. All the shades do not necessarily play well together, and anytime blues are mixed as they were today, I often find myself starting to feel a little worried. Kate chose carefully, however, it seems, and her Muse clutch and bespoke McQueen pumps worked the misty-blue "Natasha" coat from Séraphine and the floral patterned "Florrie" dress underneath. I don't know if they were perfect together, but nothing that took away from the look.

@Family_Friends1

The £195 coat features clean lines, a flattering cut to the waist, mother-of-pearl buttons, and faux pockets...all in a cozy cashmere blend. The £99 dress in a floral crepe de chine, has a distinctive Empire waist, cropped sleeves, and falls just above the knee. Both pieces could have been designed for Kate, and it is remarkable how well the brand's clothes fit into Kate's style niche. I wonder today, as I have wondered many times, why she does not wear Séraphine a little more often.

Séraphine

Verdict: run-away win. This ensemble drives home, yet again, the need for proper tailoring. Translation: clothes designed and measured specifically for a pregnant body will flatter a pregnant body. Kate looked great.

Kate spent the weekend in Bucklebury, relaxing with her family. She was spotted by a fan driving her sister Pippa (in the passenger seat) with George in the back out to Berkshire. William followed in a separate vehicle. This blurry image is so grainy as to be almost be unrecognizable, but a picture is a picture.

We started the post with a sunrise, but I have to end this one with a sunset. My grandmother, from whom, via my mother, I suspect I inherit much of my sass, has been failing. It seems she may die today or tomorrow. If you would keep her in your prayers as she passes on, it would be deeply appreciated.

Then, finally Katetakes off the (beautiful) coat ! The dress is very nice too, so it is a win for me.

  2. I think it was strategic for Kate to choose morning engagements, so she could have that yummy light make her glow ;-)

I too was very happy that she took her coat off! I wonder why she doesn't more often, because I personally would probably be warm and feel a bit constricted. Her bump was more noticeable in the dress. Glad she is wearing stylish maternity clothing, as it really does look better than normal clothes in larger sizes.

Jane, sorry to hear about your Grandma. Even when they've lived long, full lives we are still scared and hurting.

  3. I'm really sorry to hear about your grandmother, Jane - my thoughts are with you and your family.

On the much less important of clothes...I think this had the potential to be a perfectly polished outfit but my eye keeps being drawn to the fact that the hemline of the dress peeps out in places from the bottom of the coat. This seems like something that could easily have been tailored to prevent and for me, it ruins the look a little.

I'm happy to be told I'm being overly picky!!

Now Kate hit it out of the ball park today. Love the fact she was telling people the baby has been moving a lot and was at the time. She is just so down to earth. Wish she would have said how George was doing.
And I wonder why they went to het parents in two cars.

  17. Dear Jane,
I have prayed and I will pray for your grandmother. I know that you're going through an awful time. My beloved grandfather died in September aged 93. Even though he had lived a long life and was really ill in the end, it still hurts so much when I think of him. I'm almost 16 and we lived in the same house and he was a big part of my childhood. I can only speak for me, but I think you want to continue and try to do your best to do what sould have made her (him, in my case) proud.
I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

  19. As I know you perhaps don't want to be reminded of your grandmother all the time (even though I hope my other comment on this post may help you a bit), I will leave another comment on our common person of interest:
I have to say that today's outfit was stunning! I liked the Madderson dress in the style of the 60s, but I absolutely hated the hobbs animal print dress. This one, however, would deserve an award ;)
All zhe colors match together and her hair looks great a little bit more straight (even though I also like it curly). The dress had an adorable pattern and the color of the ciat was goregous and just cried "spring!" For me :)
I wonder what her last public appearance bevore giving birth will be. In my opinion, St Patrick's Day (the day before my 16th birthday ^^) would be a little bit too early... what do you think?

On a more serious note, I'm so very sorry about your grandmother Jane. I will be praying for your family! I lost my grandmother last year and it's just hard. My thoughts are with you!

  22. Greeting, everyone. Jane, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I agree with the comments that this maternity outfit is a resounding success. The light colors are very flattering on Kate, and uplifting. Hurray for the absence of the black tights and shoes!! One person commented that her dress poked out from under the dress, and then chided herself for being too picky. Not at all - this is a blog to discuss Kate's fashion, and I for one, learn some fashion tips from all of your comments. We are not being nit-picky or critical - I think that we are all having fun and even picking up some tips for ourselves. Hopefully it will not be forever until her next event. Does anyone else, especially those of you with sisters, wonder if she and Pippa can hope to keep a healthy relationship going? No matter what any of them do, the disparity between Kate and her siblings, and the eventual cousins (George') willbe huge. How many female relationships, no matter how healthy, can withstand that??

    1. Jane - Sorry about your Grandma. Lost my own mom eight years ago. Still miss her.

I don't think Kate and Pippa will have hard time mainting their close relationship. They spend time together as a family plus Kate can rely on Pippa to be honest with her. Plus William clearly enjoys his time with Kate's family so it's not like he doesn't like them and doesn't want his family to spend time with them.

I'm so sorry for the bad news. I will keep your Granny and you into my thoughts and prayers. I know how it is hard to lose someone you love and mean so much in the way that this person has helped you become what you are today...I lost 3 of my grand parents in 4 years and it was/is so hard. I don't have any of my grand parents anymore.... I can only thank you warmly for this wonderful article you gifted us...
May you Granny pass away smoothly if it is unfortunately her time to depart
    Take care...

Kate looked lovely today. I like the simple but elegant look of a pretty dress with a coordinating coat. It is easy, looks good but doesn't take centre stage diverting attention away from the main issue - the charity/organization/event.

  31. So sorry to hear about your grandmother, Jane. Thinking of you--sometimes it can be harder to be the one left behind.

This coat and dress was a total win, wasn't it? Especially after the, in my opinion, utter disaster of the brown shirtwaist (what waist?) paired with black tights. Yuk!

It is to be hoped that Kate will stick to quality maternity wear--which she can either sell or give away when she decides to quit reproducing--for the remainder of this pregnancy. Fingers crossed that she still has that pretty pink maternity coat by McQueen; between the two coats, one ought to do when she emerges from hospital (this is one photo-call/tradition which needs to go; too hard on mum and her newborn; this is not a Roman Circus, after all) and the other might do when she must, by silly protocol, partake in celebrating the 89th birthday of the Queen, some six weeks after giving birth, when her usual clothing will not fit.

Two rock-solid thumbs up for todays appearance.

Has anyone else noticed that the photo of Kate, Pippa & George heading to Bucklebury is back to front? That said, it's Kate driving on our right and Pippa sitting on the left...The Range Rover letters on the bonnet are back to front the R and E from RovER are the first letters and that's not right...how does someone take a back to front photo?

  42. Dear Jane,
I was so sorry when I've red the last part of your post...it's very sad and I would like to send you a big virtual hug. Many people here have expressed their sincere sadness for you and your family and I want to join them...I think all of us appreciate the way in which you handle this blog but also the lovely person you are and that we continue to know a little more day by day.

I comment about Kate only because you have taken time doing the post and, maybe, you would like to get feedback to distract yourself (even if I know that it's quite impossible!). I hope not to do it wrongly.
I agree with you..I like very much this outfit even if I prefer the dress to the coat. The dress is perfect on her while I find the coat a little bit too big despite the wonderful colour and material. I love baby blue or baby pink on pregnant women...One last funny image in my mind is the idea of George in the inflatable duck in a swimming pool. I bet he has appreciated it very much!

I hope you can feel the "closeness" of this community during this hard time...
