[Jewelry Update] Kate in Beulah for Afghanistan Service at St. Paul's

Friday, March 13, 2015

In sharp contrast to the laughter and fun of yesterday's visit to the Downton Abbey set, today, appropriately Friday, is a somber occasion. The royals are gathering to commemorate and thank the members of the armed services who fought--453 of whom died--in combat operations in Afghanistan.

The service was held at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Designed by celebrated architect Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London in 1666, it is a masterpiece of English Baroque. We have seen a number of royal events held in the magnificent space, and of course, it is the church in which Diana and Charles were married. The iconic dome is almost synonymous with London and features in any skyline of the city. Here, a photo of the church prepped for today's service:

St. Paul's Cathedral
During the ceremony, the Archbishop of Canterbury blessed a cross made of shell-casings from a memorial at Camp Bastion, (a military base in Helmand Province, Afghanistan) and the Bishop of London led the Act of Commitment to the Common Good. The music selection was concert worthy, as always:
The St Paul’s Cathedral Choir will sing music by Maurice Durufle, Ralph Vaughan Williams, William Harris and John Stainer. Hymns include God is Love: let heav’n adore him (Blaenwern) and Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us (Mannheim).
These two. Stop it!

Kate's arrival elicited a great deal of debate on the color of her coat. Not quite as much debate as #TheDress, but oh, so close. Lighting outside, lighting inside, the coat seemed to have a few flavors. It's a deep, deep blue, that can be agreed on.

Telegraph Live Stream
In my mind navy is a little lighter, but I affirm the suggestion it is French navy blue, which is darker...to me. Think of Kate's Madderson coat's color. I'll tell you, these are the discussions that give Kate watchers the crazy reputation. ("The sun hadn't come up and you were arguing about the exact shade of navy blue?"  Slow nod and a hesitant..."Yes?") It takes a certain personality... :)

There are some occasions where your money is not recklessly gambled if you bet on a new ensemble. A service of this import is certainly one of those occasions. She chose Beulah London's 100% wool "Chiara" trapeze coat (£650) and, it is believed, their matching Seraphina dress (£350). Kate's dress, was significantly above her knee, so although we do not know the piece, it is certainly not the Seraphina. Beulah confirmed it was not one of their frocks. The Chiara coat is not a maternity piece, but the designs is such that it nicely accommodates Kate's current figure.

Beulah London's "Chiara" coat and "Seraphina" dress

This stunning topper, set off so well by an equally sophisticated off-centered chignon, has yet to be confirmed. I do not think it is Jane Taylor, although I could be wrong. It looks more like a Jane Corbett or even Rachel Trevor-Morgan. To be updated...

Kate carried her Muse clutch, Cornelia James "Imogen" bow gloves, (although Cornelia James IDed these as Imogen, consensus seems to be they are different) and wore her bespoke McQueen pumps originally made for the 2011 tour in Canada.

[Update] Wow. Well, I said they would be very expensive, no matter the stone, but I didn't think they would be £8,400. Ladies...and gentleman, the extraordinary Anna, with the help of Jenny, has IDed Kate's jewelry. Tanzanites surrounded by diamonds in a platinum setting. By G. Collins & Sons, the necklace is a cool £8,400.

G Collins & Sons
The company holds a Royal Warrant and in 2007 the Queen made G. Collins & Sons the Crown Jeweler, replacing Garrard. The earrings are not listed on their website, but match the pendant, so I assume the Duchess (or the gifter, William, perhaps?) had two pendants made into earrings, possibly in a slightly more delicate size. £8,400 x 3= £25,200 or over $37,000 US dollars. Someone loves Kate. This set, whether you love it, or hate it, is very exciting, because it is really the first time we have seen Kate deck herself out to this degree in modern jewelry. In jewelry she owns herself. This is a step toward the more traditional royal accruements we expect. These are pieces that will comprise a much larger collection as she moves through her life, and are royal heirlooms in a way the less expensive pieces that Kate Middleton favored are not. This is historic.

Verdict: I know you already know. This is a fantastic win. I don't think Kate has ever put a foot wrong for these important church services. Every single element is picture perfect. I am so very happy to chose and updo and cannot wait for more details on her earrings and necklace!

St. Paul's Cathedral

As this service draws our thoughts and our prayers toward the Middle East, the men and woman who sacrificed and served there, let us not forget those who remain. The genocide of Christians and of minorities in Iraq and throughout the Levant has received scant coverage in the United States. We just celebrated International Women's Day and I ask you to remember the women who are targeted, abused, and killed, in addition to the horrific worry and heartbreak they undergo as they attempt to protect their families and see their men and children butchered. I think about them often, at night as I am falling asleep, driving to work, irritated in the Starbucks line... It's hard to face the ugliness of it, but don't let the genocide of our generation see you only a silent witness. Don't let these people die unnoticed with no one speaking for them.

I love the way she looks today. The coat is really nice and fits her well.
I don't know about the new jewels... Not my favourite shape on the sapphires, it look like heart shaped. But it's always good to see a new set. Love when she brings new stuff :D

For me it's also a completly win today!

  2. Do you think you can do a post about William's and Harry's uniforms(what branch, rank, ribbons ect.)? I come from a military family and always loving looking and analyzing military uniforms, however I know nothing of British uniforms. My husband actually has a pair of British camis he got on a trade while he was in Afghanistan...but that's all I know!

Catherine looks lovely! Love her hair and the way the coat hangs over her bump!

    1. I was just noting that too. If I were to guess, I would say that William is wearing an Air Force uniform and Harry is wearing Army, but I'm just guessing.
I'd also like to know what the various sashes, cordage, insignias and medals are called.

      Delete
    2. William's uniform is Royal Air Force. The blue sash is the Order of the Garter and the Star from same order,
He has Wings---denoting he is a pilot. The gold cord is of ADC to the Queen and the medals are those of HM's Gold and Diamond Jubilees.
Harry is wearing Blues and Royals Uniform also with Wings. He has the two Jubilee medalsand a medal from the Afghanistan Campaign.

  3. Woaw ! Just woaw. Kate is fabulous here. The outfit is very classy, the hat is nice. The updo is fabulous, and the jewellery is just stunning. This is clearly an obvious fantastic win, A++++ for the Duchess. And the shots with William are lovely.

I also saw on another blog a very touching snap of Prince Philip giving his hand to the Queen on St-Paul's stairs, quite moving.

Hope next week will be the same on the fashion field and thank you for the wonderful posts of this one !

  4. I'm not an expert but from general British knowledge of military uniform Harry is in Blues & Royals dress uniform. William is in RAF uniform. Harry has wings to show his pilot status and I assume his medals we're sent in his two stints of active service.

  5. Jane, I just want to say how much I appreciate you and this amazing blog and all the hard work you put into it. I come to check almost every day!

And an amazing look for Kate today! Everything is a total win. The coat accentuates her figure and bump and the hat is beautiful, along with the lovely chignon. She really does know how to dress. Can't wait for this new baby!

On a little side note: since you are (like me) a anglo and francophile, have you read '1000 years of annoying the French' from Steven Clarke? Very original book, starting with William the Conqueror and explaining the love-hate relationship between France and England. Easy to read and still very interesting!

    1. Agree. There is a picture of her holding her hand below her chest.the pressure gets pretty uncomfortable at this
time. William really chose well with her. Not just to carry-on, but to carry-on so splendidly. I sense a sort of
      Grace Kelleyesqueness.
Jane, isn't the picture of them looking at each other with such love and humor...beautiful!

  8. I absolutely love today's look! It was something different, but it was just perfect. Yesterday was typically kate, open and curly hair and a nice high street coat (and, of course, downton abbey, the best tv series, and lady mary!), but today was... wow, stunning!!

The coat looks so elegant and her hair looks great in this chignon. But the hat was certainly the best thing about the whole look ;) I wonder if the new jewelry was a gift from william...

I'm really surprised that another official engagement for march 18 was announced... so I think she is due to give birth later than expected, isn't she?

I hope we will see another fabulous maternity look like that! By the way, her bump has grown really much (even though it's not so visible because it looks as if she is carrying quite low)...

    1. Well, I think we had a sense, due to the 12-week scan, that she was due mid-late April. It is still hard to say. She may be pushing the engagements closer to her due date, AND since it isn't her first, it is more likely she will come early. Hard to say with the Palace. They do like to go in all directions on issues like this. :)

  10. I am surprised to find myself on the opposite side of the post and comments thus far - while her hair and hat are stunning, I think the fit of the coat is all wrong for her pregnant body. Overall, I don't enjoy her pregnant style as much as her non-pregnant style - too boxy and loose, things just look a few sizes too big. But this coat is really a miss for me. I'm sure she'll look wonderful in it in the future though. It's a beautiful coat.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree. She would look so wonderful in something more form fitting, especially with slender legs and arms but a cute pregnant tummy.

      Delete
    2. I have to agree. I'm definitely in the minority here, too. I'm just not crazy about this look. I keep looking at the photos and wondering what I am missing. I know this was a somber occasion, but I find this ensemble dull, not elegant. It looks like something that would have been worn in the 1940s. I have never liked Kate's choice in hats. And overall, there's just too much navy for me. The navy coat worn with a dress and/or shoes in another color might have been nice, but this is navy overload, in my opinion.

  11. Love the hat and hair, don't like the coat or jewelry. But the fit of the coat, especially from the side, is a big improvement.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Her hair!!! I love love love that chignon!!! So elegant but still fun by being so far to one side.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think four elements raise this coat from rather ordinary to elegant: Kate's very pretty face, that stunning chignon, the sophisticated hat, which I loved, and the new jewellery, which while still delicate, is large enough to stand out, particularly against dark navy, as the stones are set in white gold enhanced by tiny white diamonds. Best of all, re the jewellery, it wonderfully matches her engagement ring. Looks much like the work of Kiki McDonough to me, perhaps bespoke.--Just a matter of taste, but I have never really liked the drop sapphire earrings; I have always thought they would look better as studs.

I am puzzled as to why Kate did not accompany William to the reception after the parade and flypast.

    1. She might just have been tired. The Daily Mail had a close-up picture of her car from one of her engagements during the past few weeks. It was interesting because in the cup holders in the backseat where Kate had sat was two bags of candy, one caramel, one peppermint, both sitting open, ready for a treat. I thought this pointed to Kate needing a little sugar to keep her going during her engagement. Or maybe needing some sugar to feel better.

      Interesting little detail.

    2. Perhaps she does not want anyone to bump into the 'bump'

Servicemen and women are some of the bravest people on earth! As for the fashion, she looks incredible. Everything looks perfect. The hat with the chignon is so elegant. I like the pale makeup with the navy blue. A very fresh look. So happy to see a new necklace and earrings. They are beautiful and just what the austerity of the coat/dress needs. I'm going out on a limb and saying they aren't real but I could be wrong. I'm certainly not an expert. The color appears too bright to me .

I'm kind of speechless because it's kind of perfect. I'm in love with the angle of the hat and that might be the best chignon I've seen on her ever. My only criticism is that I don't care for matched sets of jewelry. The earrings or necklace alone would have done it for me. Btw thinking they are not sapphires. The stones have a purple cast to them. Crystals?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They look very light, almost fake, I agree. They could be sapphires, since sapphires come in a wide range of colors, but more than one person thinks they are tanzanite. Even so, I think, if we ever discover the maker, we will find these are quite expensive, real diamonds, high quality gold setting, etc. These are too loud not to be pricey. We are not going to find out they are from Claire's. :)

I always admire how you manage to put politics and info about the engagements and fashion & style all together so well.
I adore the ensemble. The hair style ia refreshing, I got tired of the down worn locks.. I love navy blue. I am a brunette myself, and I think together with the bolder blue jewelry it looks very classy and beautiful with darker hair colours.
Did you notice the little shadow that looks like it might be Kate's belly button in the last picture? I remember you had a theory about it being 'out' (sry manque of vocabulary) during the last pregnancy, so maybe you were right!

  23. Originally I wondered if they could be made from the original sapphire set that Diana had. There were a lot of big chunks of gems in the original set. I don't know much about gems but it was my first thought when I saw them.

I am always so interested to know if her gems are gifts & if so from whom & what the occasion was. Sometimes we know, sometimes we don't. Given the costs of these, I am thinking a gift from maybe even Charles. They are stunning.

My fav image of the day was where she was laughing & holding her tummy as if Baby was kicking.

She looked amazing as usual. Great post as usual too! xo lulu

  24. Kate's outfit is so appropriate for this somber church occasion ( unlike Sophie's dress which was too loud and too short ). I rather thought the new jewelry suite was a bit garish and costume - looking. I would have preferred a pin on her lapel something quieter. Kate gets it right every time though ...

  25. Hi Jane,

As a Christian Iraqi, I am so grateful for your final words in this post. The atrocities are absolutely heartbreaking - from the kidnapping and crucifixion of Christian children to the destruction of antiquities and ancient cities dating back to 7000 BC. It is nothing short of ethnic cleansing of the indigenous peoples of Iraq, the modern-day descendants of Mesopotamia.

This documentary has been making the rounds around the US and I found it to be so well done: https://vimeo.com/112613760

  26. I LOVE this set of jewellery. The art deco setting with the miligraining, the tanzanite a more modern stone. They look blue here but if paired with purple will take on that hue. A beautiful classic shape done differently with the point of the stone facing downward. Whoever purchased this set for the Duchess has wonderful taste in jewellery. Even though I can't wait to see Diana's magnificent sapphire and pearl choker again, I am glad the Duchess is building her own collection of spectacular pieces.

  33. Hi Jane,

it's so important not to forget what is going on in the world. I ,living a protected live in Germany, have no idea what it REALLY is like to live or better survive in several countries where you have to deal with war daily. It's incredible that people put their lives on the line to protect and help others. On the contrary there are people playing war games and have fun "killing" others. It just came into my mind because I'm often upset about it. This is so weird to me and I kind of find it disrespectful!

Well, let's talk about fashion. To me the wow-effect increased from outfit to outfit this week.
I can't stand the buttons on the pink McQueen she wore on Monday. It always reminds me of my Grandma's style. No go for me ;-). The dalmatian printed coat was nice. It's not my favourite but i liked it much more with the ponytail. I loved her in the cream coat she wore at the Downton set. This was classic for her and the style I love so much.
But yesterday was absolutely the top of it all. Wow wow wow!!! From head to toe just perfect! I LOVE every detail! The new jewellery is beautiful and suitable for the occasion. The chignon looks so nice on her. Thumbs up! This was great!
(looks like we can see the shape of her belly button in the last picture. It's so cute! I cannot believe how fast her belly has grown (or better how fast time went by :-) ))

    Looking forward to next week!
    XOXO, Vicky

  35. Wow! What a lovely look. Maybe the jewels were a gift at the birth of Prince George. Certainly worth spending some cash on that occasion and blue for a boy, and a gem only available from East Africa would seem quite fitting! I bet she has lots of lovely things locked away from the wedding gifts though and will bring them out slowly over the course of a few years (we've seen a few of those I think) so maybe this is one of those...
