Kate & George at Beaufort's Festival of Polo

Sunday, June 14, 2015

I was so excited this morning to see that Kate had brought George to polo. It a lovely Sunday surprise on this rainy day. Today was her first appearance at polo this year, and only the second time we have seen George at a game.  I rushed up some shots and now I am going to write an actual post about this.  Her "mom-shops" were on display as she ran after her rambunctious boy, and even took a moment to give him some, cough, direction:

The event was the Gloucestershire Festival of Polo and there were events and games most of the weekend, but this afternoon was the charity match in which both Harry and William competed last year, and happily, today, too. We had a near miss, because the weather has been a little off in the area, but the website assured fans the game would go forward despite rain in the morning.

Polo is a great game to attend because it is very bucolic and relaxing. No stands, or cramped seats like many sports games, but open fields and usually green embankments on which spectators can sit and picnic or, as Kate does now she has a little one, play with others. The horses are majestic and powerful, and their hoof boots drumming the turf are the exciting soundtrack of the game. It's easy to drop in and out of the game, too, following the goals closely for a bit, or taking time to catch up with friends.

As a Kate fan, polo has a special place in my heart because it was the backdrop against which we watched much of their relationship. We saw Wills & Kate at nightclubs, and certainly vacationing in the sand and the snow, but polo was a real staple, and a chance to see William and Kate in a relaxed environment together. Some of my favorite shots of the couple remain a few of those early polo games, like this afternoon at Coworth Park:

It was a family affair at the Beaufort Polo Club today. Prince Charles, and the Phillips family were on hand to cheer the competition between teams Piaget and Royal Salute. William arrived in his Frenchboy pants and a (coordinating?) sweater. I know these aren't his most popular pants, but I am a big fan. Cool Harry decided to play it a little safer in simple white trousers.

When I saw these shots of Kate sitting along the sidelines with George, I couldn't help but think of her sitting so many times with Pippa or other friends, sipping champagne and watching the play.

She has traded the champagne for a little guy even bubblier, and it is amazing to see how the years have been so good to Kate, and should only get better and better.

Can you imagine next year with princess Charlotte along?

Look at George: "Mom and Dad are having a little moment, and I am stuck in the middle. Even Uncle Harry has his head in his hands. Let's get back to the game, shall we?" Haha, I love this little guy's faces.

Kate has developed a bit of a uniform for polo. Breton top, comfortable skinnies, and her Sebagos. I would like to have clearer photos of Kate, but I think she is wearing the "Reverse Stripe Breton Top" from Me + Em, as featured in their August 2014 issue.

Kate looks just gorgeous and so relaxed today! I think her hair is probably still benefiting from yesterday's styling, but a more relaxed yet glamorous mom at polo I cannot  envision. I think we will get more photos later in the afternoon, but I thought we'd start off with this set because I couldn't wait to share!

  1. These are fantastic photos. She looks much more relaxed today than yesterday. And as much as I think George is adorable in the very traditional clothing we typically see him wear, I like that Kate has dressed him a bit more casually.

  2. Coming back to add that the Mirror has more photos. In those pictures, Kate appears to still be wearing maternity jeans, which I LOVE. I think it's refreshing to see her in her role as a mother first and foremost.

    1. Agreed. They look like a Demi version of maternity jeans. I'm sure she likes the extra support and comfort as she discovers what her post baby#2 bod will be.

    2. Are you kidding me??? LOL Those are not maternity jeans!

And why would wearing maternity pants mean that she is putting her role as Mom first? Look at her body, nothing about it says maternity except her fuller chest does point to nursing. She looks great!

    3. Well, Anon 3:57, I think that Danielle is just saying that Kate hasn't poured all her enemies into getting back to her pre-baby weight, à la certain Hollywood stars and models. Instead, it seems she is just naturally slimming while focusing on her children and family. I think these are maternity jeans, actually. Kate wouldn't buy brand new jeans for her transitory size, and these are an almost perfect match for TopShop's "Leigh" maternity jeans. She does look fantastic, though. What a beautiful woman with a beautiful figure.

    4. It looks like Kate is in between sizes (pregnancy and her regular size) and she opted to wear maternity jeans rather than a regular pair that could still feel and look a little snug. Either way, she looks very happy and healthy.

      Delete
    5. Hollywood actresses' would envy Kate's shape after 6 weeks. She does not need to wear maternity pants, if she even is. She is slim. I think it makes some feel better to say, oh, she is still, in maternity pants, when clearly she is slender. And to say she is "naturally slimming".... No, she is working on it very diligently and these are the results.

Why must we make her sound like she waved a wand, and poof, this happened? Clearly, losing weight fast was a priority. That doesn't make her a bad Mom.

Let's say this, even when heavily pregnant, she hated maternity wear and did everything she could not to wear it. We discussed it a lot on this blog. She has a huge aversion to maternity wear. Six weeks post birth and slender, I highly doubt those are maternity pants.

    6. They have been ID'd on several sites as Topshop's Leigh Maternity Jeans. Even though her figure is fabulous, it isn't back to her pre pregnancy form, so these jeans would afford her the comfort and give that regular jeans could not. She did wear several different brands of maternity jeans during both pregnancies also.

    7. Well, Kate is not anywhere near her pre-baby body. She definitely is not back in her skinnies. I think they are the Leigh, I have IDed them as such on Kate's Clothes website, and I think the other Kate bloggers are saying the same thing.

I do agree, Tessa, that losing weight is a top priority for her, and she is well on her way, but she isn't there yet. She could lose it faster, as some super models have, but that takes a personal trainer, hours in the gym, and significant changes to diet, etc. Not worth t unless you have millions in a modeling contract on the line. I think Kate is obviously putting in time and discipline and it is paying off. She looks fab!

    9. I completely agree, Jane. She looks fantastic, and she has no doubt been working to get back to her pre-pregnancy shape. I just pointed it out because I found it to be relatable!

    10. I found it relatable too which is always nice.

    11. I have a similar build to Kate, and after both my kids I slimmed down quickly. At 6 weeks, I wasn't in my pre-pregnancy jeans but was only a size up. And at that time, I was not someone that worked out. Not to toot my own horn (Or Kate's) I think some women just rebound a little easier after kids than others. It is definitely feasible for her to be back at that size without massive work, just nursing/breastfeeding does a lot.

It was lovely seeing her in an afternoon out, enjoying her husband and her son.

    12. Haha, Jane (4:24)- - she hasn't poured all her "enemies" into getting back...auto correct or auto-Jane? Read that blogged
out Jane. It's these little buried treasures that keep me reading your blog-among other delights.
Why is her wearing maternity jeans such a big deal? (some took exception) Seems very practical to me and proves to me that she is not a clothes-horse.

      Delete
    13. I can only agree with anon form above. I have a similar build as Kate too, and was back to pre-pregnancy weight very soon, luckily without extra effort, just being busy with the kids. Its not a miracle. Some women are a bit luckier than others, and Kate seems to be one of them. To me, it doesn’t look like Kate is trying to slim down as fast as possible (which would not be a good thing when breastfeeding!!), she looks healthy, and thats the most important! Even more, she does not seem to be afraid of showing the little extra pounds she still has, which makes me think that she feels comfortable in her body, and thats even better then! Either way, I’m sure she will be back to her normal weight very soon, and the pre-/post/whatever- pregnancy discussions will not be necessary anymore :)

  3. Is George wearing Crocs?! LOL. What a fun surprise.

For me this puts to rest the thoughts that Kate was hiding on the balcony due to her post-baby body. She's in fitted clothing today, and she would have expected to be photographed at a polo game.

Great fun; what a nice treat!

  5. Love, love these pictures that show lots of family members interacting and.....well, just being a family. We never see the Phillips or Tindall families at the balcony affairs and it is obvious they get along well with William, Harry and Charles. Kate and Autumn just seem like sisters-in-law chatting about raising kids and whether their hubbies throw their socks on the floor. Just an ordinary family having fun together.

    2. Kathy, yes, it is really interesting to see them socializing with these family members, who are, as Anon 11:56 says, super well adjusted. I always frowned on Anne not giving her kids titles, and I thought I would be upset in their shoes. But, the more I watch all the royals spread their wings and make their own ways in the world, the more I think Anne really knew what she was doing. Peter and Zara have done very well. They seem self-confident, down to earth and very kind. Perfect fit for our wonderful Cambridges!

Awww, these photos are so cute, they really made my day!

After her rather somber and tired looks yesterday at Trooping the Colour, Kate looks so happy with george, so beautiful^^

And george is duch a handsome toddler, I love his full blonde hair and he looks so cute in those little sneakers! I love his outfit, especially the trousers and the shoes... I really like the way Kate dresses him and I'm sure that George and Charlotte will one day also become fashion icons just like their mother.

Seeing Kate as a mum, sitting on the grass and interacting with george is great! She seems to get along well with his family, especially the Philips'.

Absolutely love these pictures! Kate looks fantastic (and so did George, of course!)

    1. Yes, although, I felt like he was still pretty preppy. Kate likes the very traditionally style. My mom was like that with my older brother, actually. She relaxed it a little as the years went by and the children added up. :)

P.S. I love seeing Charles unwind. He seemed to really enjoy himself today.

    2. Agree that George is still dressed in the preppy style, I happen to love that look but after about 4 George may or may not agree...then we will see. hee hee. You tend to relax after your first as you get busy dealing with the others, but if you have a Nanny to help out and your kids go to schools requiring uniforms, it may make it easier to maintain that style of dressing for a longer time with your children. The Beckhams have managed:)

to bring us this sweet post. George's snarl , in fact most of his expressions, are unlike any baby/toddler faces I've seen.
It looked as though he was trying to do a somersault, perhaps copying his cousins' antics.

    2. MK, Yes! It was good for everyone, I think, to have this come up. Definitely saved my sanity. :)
Royalfan, I am surprised we didn't get snaps of Charles with George, actually. I am sure they must have interacted.

    3. royalfan, I wasn't commenting on whom he might resemble. I just meant he has such an expressive face for his age..
I was going to refer to his Mum's face while watching tennis etc., though, but I feared getting things rolling in a
direction I didn't want to go.

Jane, I think the Express has some photos of Charles sort of interacting with George. I believe the polo match was quite close to his country home, High Grove.

    4. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear, mk. I brought up Michael Middleton only because I think George does favor him a bit in the looks department (the eyes), but as far as expressions are concerned, I really do see a lot of William (same age comparisons).

How about those Crocs on George? Excellent choice. .... Kate looks great! Nice to see the family out having a lazy Sunday filed with Polo, happy children and some good old competition between the brothers.

I will say I do agree that the jeans are maternity jeans. In the one shot she seems to be adjusting them from the back. Those jeans are setting very high at waist. No way would she wear pants that fit like that unless they are maternity. Probably comfy for her at this point. She looks great though. She really is a beautiful young woman. I never looked that good at week 6. LOL

    8. Their kiss is fine, both turning their heads, cheek kiss.

But William is very slender and, as I have noticed in the past, any bulge he gets is easily seen.

Autumn is pretty, William is married, but not dead. I thought it was funny. LOL

Like when Kate beams at that one guy, can't remember his name. He is very cute and does something with boat racing... We have discussed it before, they have done several engagements together. They always seem to twinkle at each other.

Well, William "twinkles"' at Autumn. HaHa!

Have a sense of humor, people! William knows where to channel his affection, but he is human!!

  17. If I were given a ticket to attend an event of my choosing with the royals(s) attending also my choice, this afternoon's polo match just might be it. I wasn't exactly in the polo club crowd, but a group of us wives used to gather at night summer
baseball (cricket) matches to watch our husbands play. The kids would run around in the grass and have a wonderful
time, while we chatted and also occasionally watched the game.

These pictures reminded me of that. I do love a tiara, but as a chance to observe and even interact with the BRF, this
    would be my ideal.
Now, if I could just figure out a way to smuggle in Queen Margrethe, I would ask for no more.

    1. Agree, this is just such a lovely get together. Have spent hours at kids games and husbands sporting events and my own events with husbands watching. I have a big family so seeing all the interactions is lovely. George is very cute but does looks to be independent. I have/had a kid similar to George and I would have loved to have a Nanny to help out and a Mom, my Mother had died before my kids were born, but her advice would have been so helpful. Catherine seems to be a very typical young parent of todays generation and I think her Nannys help with George is probably a really good thing for both her and George. :)

  18. What fun and adorable photos! Even if she's not back to her pre-pregnancy size, I think we can put to rest the comments about her being "uncomfortable with her body" from yesterday. She looks fantastic and wasn't a bit camera shy today! Yesterday the family was in some sort of a black hole - glad she's emerged!

I think she certainly has her hands full with that rambunctious little boy but I am so glad to see that she is a hands on mom who disciplines when the situation calls for it. I'll never forget the photos of Diana giving William a little swat one time when he got a little out of hand at some event. And it looks like George pays attention when Mummy speaks! Just delightful! I'm so happy to see these photos today - not a sour pickle in sight!

  25. Oh well, Kate can never really be a feminist icon, she is so determined not to be photographed in public until she has lost most of the weight. (except on the steps of the hospital) It's a shame, really, her efforts to try to return to her pre-baby weight as speedily as possible might well put psychological pressure on other mothers to try and regain their figures swiftly after giving birth. They say it takes 9 months to put the baby weight on, it should take about 9 months for it to come off.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Liz, I don't think Kate wants to be a feminist icon; I believe she is happy to be "Kate". And if she was concerned about being photographed before she reaches a certain weight, she could have avoided the afternoon of polo with the inevitable debate about her maternity skinny jeans and whether she was wearing them because of choice or necessity. :) Entertaining an active toddler *guaranteed* that she would be photographed from every possible angle.

    2. Well, she's not bearing that much extra-weight now. It's barely possible to detect whether they are maternity jeans or not.
