[Updated] Kate Debuts New Reiss Coat at Rugby World Cup

Friday, September 18, 2015

Happy Friday! Kate's comeback continued today as she attended the Rugby World Cup's opening ceremony at Twickenham Stadium. She was joined by her husband, Prince William and brother-in-law Prince Harry, who also happens to be the honorary president of the England Rugby 2015 Team.

Let me preface the next remarks by saying I know almost nothing about rugby. It could be Quidditch, for all I know, and something of the aura makes me relate the two. Irrational, I know. I have a rudimentary understanding of the rules, but then again, I am not much of a sport fan outside of tennis anyhow. That being said, I really enjoyed this short "movie" that was played at the beginning of the ceremony. What Anglophile doesn't love a film that opens with such beautfiul cinematography and the inspiring strains of "I Vow to The My Country" swelling through the speakers? It was a talented short that quickly gave some background on the game and was very visually engaging. Prince Harry and a rugby star I would never have known, had a short cameo which was cute. I encourage you to watch:

Ok, we have covered all the sports we are going to in this post, let's move onto the fashion before you worry you've wandered onto another blog. I think we all knew that Kate would wear a coat, since it is a bit nippy in London these autumn days. I suspected she would wear a new piece because she has been gone for so very long. Below is the first grainy shot we got as the Duke and Duchess arrived, and the ripples of excitement at the color were significant:

Twitter @Richard_Parr

Richard Palmer revealed the Duchess was wearing a Reiss coat. This piece is from the AW14 collection and when I saw which one it was I had to laugh a little. Last fall I needed a new coat for work and I browsed the Reiss collection. I ended up buying a second J.Crew coat, but I distinctly remember looking very seriously at the "Emile" in blush. It didn't exactly capture my heart. To me, the curling front was odd--I couldn't imagine how it would look on and I dismissed it as something that was unlikely to end up in Kate's closet. Ha!

Reiss "Emile" Coat

Today, I was intrigued to examine hi-res shots of Kate and to see if I liked it more on her. Regrettably, the jury is still out. The problem with these sports games is that we never really get great, unimpaired photos of Kate. For instance, other than the fact she looks to be wearing black stockings, it is almost impossible to judge what shoes she is wearing. She may have even been wearing her Aquatalia Rumbas. It's frustrating, but we don't get a complete sense of an ensemble. See, that's sports for you. I know I am in trouble with that remark. ;))

[Update] After yours truly had already drifted off with Wynken, Blynken, and Nod, more pictures of Kate came out. Here is a full shot of the Duchess, showing--as several of you super-fashion fans have already noted--her Stuart Weitzman "Power" pumps and carrying her Muse clutch. Plus, a better look at how well that scarf matches her coat! I have also finally gotten the entry for this event, with all the details on her ensemble, up at Kate's Clothes if you want more info. This photo doesn't markably change my attitude toward the coat. I like it, it isn't making my list of to-die-for coats, but I love the color on Kate and I think it is very elegant in its simplicity. Someone mentioned in the comments, and I agree, that this would be a good candidate for a Christmas morning recycle. It could be amazing if Kate paired this with an up-do and a bold hat. I hope we see it again! (I found a few more pictures I liked, but there isn't really a place for them here, I popped them on the entry on Kate's Clothes, if you want to see more photos I thought were cute.)

It is interesting that Kate chose Reiss. She put the High Street brand on the fashion map for many outside the UK, but she hasn't actually worn that many of their pieces. She wore Reiss early on, though, when Kate-mania was just sweeping the globe in the wake of her breathtaking Royal Wedding. It did not hurt that she chose a Reiss dress from her closet as one of the ensembles for her engagement shoot. The "Nanette" ruffle dress was a sensation!

The Duchess wore it shortly after at the start of her blockbuster tour of Canada, which only served to solidify the brand as a Kate staple.

Although only a few pictures were released from their brief meeting with the President and First Lady of the United States, the "Schola" bandage dress was an equal hit with the public.

Finally, she wore their "Peacock" dress to the Epsom Derby and received almost universal rave reviews.

It was relatively recently, but one of her most iconic coats from her "Kate Middleton" days was IDed as a Reiss piece. This double-breasted white coat is SO iconic to my teenage years. Kate wore this all over the place. It was her signature piece and I think it remains a favorite to many of us who have followed the princess since the old days:

Kate has worn a number of Reiss pieces since, but those early outfits really hit the charts. Any label Kate wore in that first year of her marriage got double or triple the "points" thanks to the euphoria everyone was experiencing. Reiss has gorgeous stock and given we have seen her wear pieces from them in the manner she has, I think it is a safe bet to assume she wears more of the label in private, too.

Today, Kate arrived holding the Beulah "Shibana" scarf, which both she and her sister Pippa have now been spotted wearing.

The blue of the heart print is a perfect match to Kate's "Emile" coat. I love scarves and it so much fun when you find a scarf in your closet that fits an ensemble to perfection. It makes a fashionista's heart sing. :)

The couple stayed on to watch a rugby match before taking their leave. I love Kate with or without William. I love seeing her beautiful smile, her gorgeous hair, seeing what she has chosen to wear and how she has styled it...seeing a beautiful friend after an absence. It is a delight every time. What do you love even more than seeing a good friend? Seeing a good friend in love. Joint-enaggements are always so darling and heartwarming. After over ten years, these two seem as enamored with one another as the day they were first caught canoodling on the ski-slopes of Klosters.

Verdict: I am going to side-step judgement on this coat. I didn't love it on the website, but I don't dislike it on Kate. I think we need to see more to have the full effect. Kate looked radiant today. Her big, beautiful eyes seemed larger than ever, and her complexion works so well with this color. Lastly, it is my birthday (someone asked and I never answered, but it's today) and absolutely everything has been sunshine for me...including Kate. I had hoped to reveal a little surprise for you to celebrate, but this was a tough week in other respects. If all goes well, I should have something for you on Monday Funday. Until then...

  1. A very Happy Birthday to you Jane!! Best wishes for many, many more.

I agree. Very frustrating not being able to see the whole outfit. I love the color of the coat and it suits her well. She sparkled in it. I actually like the asymmetrical front and the raised collar although difficult to see with her hair down. I hope she wears it another time so that I can form a more concrete opinion. I thought maybe she wore Reiss in tribute to Debra Reiss who recently passed away but maybe has nothing to do with that.

    1. I don't like the hair either. I'm not being catty or mean, but this style ages her and is too heavy. The style of the bangs and how se wears them are too disjointed. I like bangs, but this overall style is not working. It will be interesting to see if this is a short phase of her new normal.

There's still some birthday time left. Don't let it go to waste. Champagne?
Will the Monday reveal have anything to do with your enigmatic "One mystery solved" statement last post?

As far as more recent choices are concerned, this look is at the top of my list...along with the brown St Patrick's Day coat and the navy coat she wore to St Paul's Cathedral when she was pregnant this second time.

  9. Happy birthday, Jane! :))) I hope you did, or do, something special to celebrate.

Regarding the coat... I am in love with the look and even more so when I saw the black pumps and tights she wore to contrast with the bright color. As a matter of fact, it makes me wonder if this will be her Christmas Day recycle...??? The cut is nice for her slim figure and the curve gives it just a little something out of the box.

But the interaction between W&K takes the prize in my book.

Oh, a black hat and gloves me thinks...preferably with black panty hose (I can see JC shaking her head!) and, most likely, boots in December.

Royalfan-in support of the black/blue combo- Reiss shows the blue coat with a black top and black slacks-with the
coat open, for casual wear, I suppose.

The black is a good call and I love the idea of boots for the cold weather. Yes, I think JC is probably shaking her head at the thought of the black hose or even tights. After all, a girl has to keep warm!

If it stunned me, I can't imagine how it would effect a young English girl. I think she must have feelings for
      Diana, apart from William.
So yes, I agree that Catherine honors Diana's memory in her way.

I love this coat and Kate in it. Most women love shoes, for me it's coats. I have way more coats than I could possibly admit. I love this colour on Kate, so vibrant and bold. And I love the little bit of edginess to it. So many coats are just coats. I like a coat to have a bit of fun and this one does. Great pic Kate. William and Kate are so cute together especially at sports events. Kate is so expressive. Love it.

    A big win for me.

I have noticed that Kate has worn some rather unexpected brands lately... I mean, she has worn Reiss or Ralph Lauren before in public, but I wouldn't count them as her go-to brands over the last 1 or 2 years. Do you know what I mean?

  26. Happy Birthday Jane! It´s a little bit late, but the good wishes come from my heart!! I hope you had a lovely day!!

I think it was a nice, respectful gesture of the Duchess to wear a Reiss coat as the daughter of david reiss died so unexpectedly only a couple of days ago (together with her unborn child, I cannot imagine what her family must be going through at the moment). I like the colour of the coat. It´s bright but still very elegant.

  29. A belated birthday greeting to you, Jane, and like you, I think it best to reserve a final judgement on this coat until I get a better look at it on Kate. Generally speaking tho, I rather like the style, altho I am less keen on a blue-black match, and would have preferred to see the coat worn with nude tights. However, it might have worked--if I had seen a clearer photo of the ensemble and if it had been taken in better lighting....So, one thumb up here, altho I reserve the right to change my mind.

I really enjoy seeing Kate at sport matches; her facial expressions are every bit as entertaining as those of her son. No need to watch the game--you can tell whats happening on the field! And its such a lovely change from the public mask so many royals wear, altho the Queen can get quite carried away at the races.

    1. JC, I would call this look "power dressing". During the colder months, I am very fond of bright colors combined with black.

Having said that, I do hope we're still on for the cramped bedsit..... :)

      Delete
    2. Power dressing, eh? For a rugby game? I could see it if she had been attending a semi-annual meeting of the Charities Forum...still, I get your drift, altho I would've preferred to see Kate wear this coat with a pair of tailored black slacks instead of black hose. (Black hose puts me in mind of funerals and brothels and wizened little old Italian ladies who seem to dress head-to-toe in black.)

Are you kidding? Of course its still on; I wouldn't miss the chance to eat a piece of that cheesecake you promised me! Just don't tell me you're a vegan--I am already searching the internet for a great little French bistro in London.

And I can appreciate where you're coming from with the black hose but, in my mind, I have always associated it with a serious business woman look (and not the after 5 variety :).

The difference in your comment and the 12:22 comment is that she has criticised the style of shoe, while you

  36. Happy birthday Jane - hope you had a great day. Thank you for the rugby vid! Loved it. Have learned all about rugby recently as my boyfriend's from New Zealand (home of the legendary All Blacks --). Kate's coat is amazing in cut and colour - such a good hue against her skin tone. Am also loving Kate's hair cut more all the time but then as a girl with long hair and bangs on and off, I'm partial to that look. Why not wear it long when she she had such thick, lustrous locks :-)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I really love this coat. It's classic, elegant and tailored, but the curling front keeps the style from being too tailored. The color looks fabulous on Kate. Wow!! This is definitely one of my favorites of all the coats Kate has worn. The scarf is pretty, too. I wish we could have seen it on. But I have to say that I always wonder why Kate never unbuttons her coats. This looks like a winter or cold-weather coat--right? Even though they were outside, it's only September and it couldn't have been that cold. I wish Kate had unbuttoned it at some point so that we could have seen her dress. Anyway… Kate looked very pretty and stylish. I also like her hair.

And last but not least... happy belated birthday, Jane!! Thank you for all your efforts with this blog.

  38. The coat is striking. I think unbuttoning the one button may have ruined the line of the coat, in this instance.
William kept his buttoned, too, although other men had their jackets open. It may give a more formal and respectful, less casual appearance.
There are shady areas out of the sun and with a little breeze, can be chilly also. mk

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree mk. There must be a better way to say it :) but the opening isn't in the center and it would look awkward if it was unbuttoned. Similar to a double breasted coat or jacket...

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the comments. I agree that unbuttoning might have ruined the line in this instance. However, Kate never seems to unbutton her coats, no matter what the weather or time of year. She even keeps her coats on, buttoned all the way up, indoors! It's something I really don't understand in a general sense.

      Delete
    3. I think suits would be a good way to avoid the buttoned / unbuttoned issue. In cooler weather, she wouldn't need a coat if she is walking a few steps from the car, and once she is inside there is no need to take it off and hand it to someone.

IMO, she wants her arrival to be seamless so she can greet the people waiting for her without the interruption involved in taking off her coat...and likewise for when she leaves.

      Delete
    4. Royalfan, I think your suggestion of suits a good one, and without wishing to conjure up ghosts, Diana wore these very successfully in the latter part of her career as a royal. However, I can't recall seeing any pics of Diana--I wasn't into Royal watching during Diana's lifetime--attending sporting events; I can imagine Kate wearing a suit to Wimbleton, however. Lightweight suits, maybe cotton or linen.

    5. JC, I'd rather not post the links here, but Diana did attend a few rugby matches and attended Wimbledon many times...both with and without her sons. If you do a Google image search for "Princess Diana rugby Wales" and "Princess Diana Wimbledon" you will see a few relevant photos.

And yes, Diana did wear suits very successfully. When she tired of the fashion icon craze and wanted to be taken more seriously, she adopted a more business-like approach to daywear and opted for spectacular even gowns that were not as fussy as her early days. She was a wonderful example of "less is more."

      Delete
    6. Diana did attend Wimbledon fairly regularly. She also attended a lot of polo matches. She did achieve the less is more look later in her life with great success. I think Kate has already mastered this style but I do wish she would wear some of the fantastic jewelry Diana wore. She was always so creative with her jewelry and I would love to see Kate do the same. I think the biggest difference may be, however, that Diana was a city girl and Kate is more of a country girl. Diana wore the glitz and glam very comfortably and Kate seems more at home going to sporting events and at casual things. It will be interesting to see how her style changes once she is Princess of Wales.

      Delete
    7. I forgot to add that I also have noticed that Kate always keeps her coat on and buttoned up, even inside. I would be roasting and uncomfortable with all that bulk all the time.

    8. Robin, I understand that Kate may be a country girl at heart, but I believe she does have it in her... IMO, she needs to get over the playing it safe bit. And life may teach her to do exactly that. ;)

And I didn't mean to skip over your comment above. Yes, I keep seeing the images from your state and I hope mother nature begins to cooperate... :)

    1. @ Anon Sept. 20, 8:06 PM. Yes. Her scarf was by Beulah London. 10% of sales from this label goes to a charity which aims to eradicate the sex slave trade.

  40. I think the reason Kate's complexion looks so glowing and her eyes so striking is that her hair appears so dark. In her event the day before, her hair looked so light and almost red, and here it finally looks deep and dark like it used to be again. It suits her and makes her truly shine.

    Happy birthday!

    1. I had the same thought! I think she looks so much more striking when her hair appears darker. I wish she would make it a little more like it was for the wedding and Canada tour.

  42. Happy Bday, Jane! I hope you had a lovely day (and weekend)!

Thank you so much for maintaining such a positive outlook on your blog. FBTB is my favorite Kate blog for just that reason. Even if you aren't crazy about what she is wearing you always have nice things to say. I really, really appreciate that! My way of admiring the Duchess is like yours, I think: positive, affirming, good-natured. I often skip the comments so that I don't have to get the downer of all the snark. I come here for happy!

    Thanks for keeping us posted!
    Unabashedly a Kate fan,
    Elizabeth

  43. First, happy birthday! I hope you celebrated in style!

Second, as far as the coat itself goes, it's OK. She looks lovely in everything. What I love is the color! She always looks so stunning in jewel tones and this is no exception! The scarf is perfect and so are the earrings. The photo of her and William is adorable and Harry is looking very handsome as well. A successful outing for all concerned.

  45. I think as Kate becomes more experienced in her public role, she will 'wear' the clothes rather than the other way around.......I am old enough to remember the same phenomenon with Diana.....

  46. I wish Kate experiment more with her hair. Layers, colors...even ombre would look fabulous on her.
    Happy birthday Jane!

  47. Kate made a surprise visit to a prison in a beautiful peplum dress! Just wanted to share the news (even though you probably already know it ;)) and say that I am in love with that outfit!
