New Photos of Princess Charlotte Released

Sunday, November 29, 2015

To universal delight, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge released photos of Princess Charlotte this morning. Just as with the first images of George holding his sister, these were taken by Kate at the Cambridges' home at Sandringham.

Kate has a wonderful eye for artistic continuity. We now have two photo-sets taken at Anmer Hall--this set and the photos of George golding Charlotte shortly after her birth--and they complement one another, but each has a flavor that sets it apart and lends a unique twist. The setting is the same for both: a chair or couch at Anmer with a wide aperture to blur the background. In the earlier photos Kate nestled the two children on a creamy love-seat and flooded the photo with white light.

In this first proper photo-set of Princess Charlotte, the colors are more muted and there is a whimsical, almost retro vibe. The gingham upholstery and the "shabby-chic" arm, Charlotte's printed dress and dusky rose sweater, even her cuddly toy, all maintain the classic vibe that Kate has embraced.

Although we have seen a number of photos of Charlotte already, this is the first clear image of her looking so big. I am immediately struck by her resemblance to James, and after some thought to Carole, as well. I said this with George, too, but the Middleton genes are very strong. I saw Pippa and Mike in George when he was about this age, but as time has passed, a resemblance to his daddy and the Windsors has become more apparent. I wonder if in two years, Charlotte will also be a little more balanced.  She certainly has changed. Our first glimpse of the baby princess was on the day of her birth:

We saw Princess Charlotte again just the next month when William and Kate very graciously released the four images of Charlotte and George together. She was more alert in those photos, but still very much a newborn.

We saw her a month later when she was christened at St. Mary Magdalene on the Sandringham Estate, and by that time she was a repliKate of George:

We saw a more recent pap shot of the princess, if you follow those, and while she certainly had grown, she looks remarkably different in today's official photos. It is amazing to see how she has developed. Those blue eyes just pop off the page and it looks like she is going to have her brother's enthusiasm for toys!

Today's photos come shortly after Kate threw her support behind the hospital at which Charlotte and George were born.

St. Mary's Hospital
In a press release from the hospital, Kate remarks on the wonderful are she received at St. Mary's and how pleased she is to lend her voice and aid to the effort. Kate has made the Lindo Wing international news on two occasions now, so there are few better to speak up for St. Mary's.

These photos were delightful. Kate continues to produce photos that are both contemporary and classic and will look appropriate in both history books and expensive coffee table tomes across the years! I love that she is continuing to dress her children so beautifully and I know we all appreciate that the royal couple are willing to share these intimate shots. It was a royal Thanksgiving weekend, after all. :)

  1. HimJane. These were a surprise this morning. She is just so beautiful like her mummy. I think the only thing of William's is her eyes. The rest is Kate and the Middleton side. They sure make beautiful babies.

    1. They sure do. That was my exact thought, but I didn't know if I could boldly state it. ;)

  2. I LOVE these photos! Kate is a really good photographer, she always finds nice backgrounds. This photo is even prettier than the ones from May IMO, this has more colour. I really like that the colours and the louis quinze chair give the picture a vintage vibe. It's good that Kate takes pics so it's a 'normal' situation for the kids.

Charlotte is such a beautiful baby. Those cheeks and these blue eyes are gorgeous! I like that every child has something from every parent - George has William's blonde hair and Kate's hazel-green eyes and Charlotte has William's blue eyes and Kate's brown hair. Charlotte will definitely grow to become such a beauty, just like her mother.
Have Charlotte's clothes been IDed yet? Her outfit is just so cute, I love this floral dress, the collar and the baby pink knit. Generally, I love the way Kate dresses the kids.

The photo with the toy where she is laughing is so cute! In the first one reminds me a lot of Kate (and Carole), but also the Queen when she was young! Does anyone else see this resemblence?

Those photos were released to mark her becoming 6 months old, right? I really hope that they'll release a family portrait of all 4 of them or at least one with George additionally as Christmas approaches :) fingers crossed!

Thanks for this quick post, Jane. Did you celebrate a nice Thanksgiving? I hope your studies are going well :)

    1. My very first instinct when I saw this photo was also of the Queen as a baby, but after a few looks I see Carole as well. She is beautiful and I think looks much different from George now that she has aged some. Gorgeous!

    2. Sonja ~ in regards to Kate taking pictures so it is more "normal" for the kids. I agree; however, in N. America at least, families are hiring professional photographers more and more. Some photographers offer packages where they photograph babies as newborns, 3 mos, 6 mos, and 1 year. Photographers offer "mini sessions" at all times of the year. We vacation on the Hawaiian islands quite often, and families of all ages frequently hire pro photographers on the islands to take family photos. My point is just that even normal, middle class families quite frequently employ professional photographers, so this is "normal" for a lot of people. Not just royals :-)

    3. I have unsettling memories of taking my children to a photographic studio when they were the Cambridge
children's ages. Aside from the hassle, the photographer scared them with hyperactive moves, strange noises, and waving toys. I guess it was an attempt to provoke a smile. All he did was terrify and confuse them. Perhaps Sonja meant more "natural," than "normal." Responding to their own mother in their own environment would certainly
be more natural than a stranger in a studio or even the home..
Catherine is a gifted photographer. It would be senseless not to use her talents.
      What a precious little dress!
I usually think infant comparisons to relatives are completely subjective and sometimes awkward (especially if the baby is adopted-although that might be welcomed) however, she seems a little clone of Catherine's grandmother,
      who worked at Bletchley Park.
Thank-you for the lovely post, Jane.If we're patient sometimes we get our wish-a Thanksgiving post, as you said.

    4. Yes, I meant natural - sorry for the confusion :) I was in a hurry while typing this... I also know a lot of people who hired professional photographers to take pictures of their kids. But, I was told that most of the children were a lot more relaxed, smile more and just looked happier and more natural with their mom behind the camera rather than a stranger. And I could imagine that especially Princess Charlotte who is protected a lot by W&K would be a shy child in general (but I don't know, that's just what I assume).
I also like that these photos gave us a tiny insight to their private life at Anmer Hall and are mote 'personal/unique' than sone pics by sone photographers who use the same setting for every child so that you think they all look kinda similar (of course, not to disrespect anyone)
I did not mean that they tried to be 'normal' (middle class), I just thought about a more natural, less stressed and relaxed situation for the little princess. Sorry again for the confusion.

      I hope I could clarify things :)

    5. Sonja, I understand what you are trying to say. :) A close friend of mine has two little ones and she shares the professional photos they have taken of the children. But to be honest, I tend to prefer the candid shots she takes herself. The children are happy, comfortable, and I know they are smiling at their mother.

    6. Amen, royalfan.

I mean, of course you go to a photographer's studio to have pictures of those 'very important' moments (christening, first day of school, First Communion, confirmation,...) in your child's life taken, but I think that those always look rather staged. I much prefer the moms' pictures of their relaxed babies :) (BTW I did not like the filter in the christening portrait of Kate & Charlotte - her eyes looked so dark brown but we now know that ttheyare a stunning baby blue)

    7. Hi Sonja! I am just popping in to respond to your initial comment! Charlotte's eyes struck me the most. I had no idea they were that startling blue. Super gorgeous. Someone mentioned they are Diana's eyes, and I would agree with that. So lovely that she inherited something as lovely as eyes from such a loved woman.
The ensemble hasn't been IDed yet, but I see you know that from a later comment on the new post.
I m doing well. We are rolling into finals and I am just hoping they go well and looking forward to getting them done with. :) Thanksgiving was a really relaxing break.
      Hope you are well!

    2. Jean, I think I owe you a very overdue Happy Birthday!! Life has been hectic here with school, but I enjoyed seeing all your birthday wishes flowing in and appreciate your presence here on the blog!

    3. That's what I thought too, royalfan, but upon closer look I think Jean may be right. Either way, I love the distressed, chippy look so it's a win for me!

  4. I feel like I see Carole in these photos! They are a tad overexposed, but otherwise very lovely. Like with photos of George, W&K always choose a good assortment of various expressions to allow us to see the varying sides of their personalities.

I'm probably expecting too much, but I think a Christmas holiday photo of the 4 of them, or brother & sister together, would be a very nice treat.

  5. Its always a crap shoot to decide, at such a tender age, whom a child looks like, but in a spirit of fun, I will contribute my two cents. When Charlotte was first-born, I thought she looked like a cross between Kate and the Queen--and also thought that Charlotte was an exceptionally pretty 12-hr-old. Now, I see more of a cross between Carole Middleton and the Queen, altho her facial expression when she showed her delight in her stuffy dog was all Kate. In any case, a very pretty baby girl.

I would be remiss if I failed to salute the photographer, Kate. This is Kate's second venture into publicly released photographic images of her children and, if anything, she seems to be getting better. Better still, having Mummy take the pics means little stress for George and Charlotte--far less than a stranger and far, far less than a royal pack. Well done, Kate... and much cheaper than hiring someone who expects to get paid!

    1. I agree about the sucess of these photos. I think they should ditch the professionals. Kate is able to capture far better shots of her children than any we've seen from outside photographers, I think.

    2. I want outside photographers for photos of the 4 of them :-) Photos of the children, or children with daddy, would be lovely done by Kate.

    3. Charlotte is a beautiful baby and I too think she resembles both sides of the family. And yes, kudos to Kate on her talent as a photographer. Definitely an easier, stress-free scenario for little ones.

  6. What a nice surprise!! Lovely photographs of a lovely little girl. I see a strong family resemblance to her brother but if her head were full of golden curls she would look very similar to the Queen at that age. I tried to find baby pictures of Carole Middleton but struck out.

Should I be embarrassed to admit that I was equally excited to see this chair? Im itching to get a glimpse into that home!

    3. Faith, no, you should NOT be embarrassed and my reasoning is as follows....it make me feel better about my own curiosity! :)) From what little we have seen, it does look like a very warm, cozy, and bright home.

    4. So glad I have some company :-) The chair is fabulous!

    5. Faith, I was also excited to glimpse the inside of their home. Love the chair and I keep thinking that if I squint enough I will be able to make out the details of the background. I love Kate's traditional style in the way she dresses, dresses her children, and decorates her home.

    6. I know Robin :-) I was enlarging the picture as much as possible to try to get a good look at the chair in the background but to no avail:-(

  8. Lovely photos. Not sure whom I think she looks like but I actually do not see Carole or James. She does look a bit like the Queen, will find a baby picture to look at also. Both Charlotte and George will change so much over the next 12 years, they are both the very round full faced baby/toddler look which changes so much as the child grows. ali

  9. I knew it-we have new photos of Charlotte! She's a doll and love both the serious, thoughtful look on her face as well as the sheer joy of playing with her toy.

I hope we see a few pics of George too and possibly the whole family before Christmas.

  10. Charlotte looks like such a lady! Those big blue eyes are beautiful.

Fingers crossed for a family shot or at least a picture of the children before Christmas!

    1. PinkyMe! Very good spot! I don't think it is the dress, but I think you are on the right track for the store. The sweaters and even the style of some of the dresses make me think this could very well have been where today's ensemble came from! (I have written a new post on it)

  12. I find it crazy that no one is commenting that Charlotte is the SPITTING image of William! He is literally all I see in her. I suppose Charlotte has Mommy's hair color but that little face is all Daddy!

    1. Agreed. I saw a photo comparison of Charlotte and William and she is the carbon copy of her dad. But I do see some Carole's looks as well. Now, i hope I don't get bashed for saying this, but I think the girl is average looking.... I don't think she os so pretty, but nonetheless adorable. I just think George is more beautiful.

    2. Agreed - I think she looks like William and not a bit like her brother. I think people have a tendency to think that sons look like their dads and daughters like their moms just because of the gender, but George is Kate and Charlotte looks like Wills to me! What distinct looking children!

      Delete
    3. I agree. When I saw this photo of Charlotte, she immediately reminded me of William at a similar age.

  13. She is such a sweetheart! I'm sure the children are much more relaxed with mom taking the photos than a professional photographer they don't know. With gorgeous photos like these, who needs a professional anyway?

  14. These photos are just adorable!! I'm so glad she has those startling blue eyes from her daddy and Grandma Diana. I think she looks more like William but I do see Carole in her face as well. The little outfit she has on is so classic and my favorite style on babies. Sweet print with smocking and a white collar - perfect. I think this pattern looks similar to one of the dresses in the store window. Look just under Carole's elbow. Kate (and Granny Carole) must be having a blast dressing her!

  15. What a treat this morning! Isn't it funny how the genes mix! I see more Windsor in Charlotte than in George. To me, George looks an awful lot like Grandpa Mike except for the blonde hair. I see more William (and Spencer) in Charlotte with hopefully, darker hair like her Mum. We'll have to see how it matures as they both age. A third baby may look totally different too. But I am overstepping my boundaries a bit.... Hopefully, we'll see some Christmas pics of the Cambridges. That would really be a treat! Wouldn't it be swell if Charles and Camilla's Xmas card features their combined grandchildren?

  16. Normally, when people say that a baby looks just like the father, or mother, or grandparent or whoever, I can't see any resemblance at all. But when I first saw these photos of Charlotte, I immediately thought of Carole Middleton. To me, the resemblance is uncanny! She has Kate's hair coloring, but not Kate's facial features. Maybe Charlotte will grow to look more like the Windsors, like George has. No matter, she is beautiful... as is George. What gorgeous children!

  17. Argh my comment just deleted itself. Very shortly now:
In my opinion her face features, the big eyes and thin lips, feel more calm and ladylike than George's chubby, funny face.
After these 'amateur' shots my opinion of Testino's Cristening releases sank even more. The blurry side-shot of Charlotte in her mother's arm, Kate's head twice her body's size? So awful.
I see definitely more Carole, James and even Michael than MounbattenWindsor, but as you said, that may change.

    1. Yes, Kate's photos are way better than Mario Testino's! In the one of Kate holding Charlotte, her eyes look so dark brown, but we now know that they're blue...he shouldn't have used such a dark filter with so much contrast, the group picture was nice.

  18. Porcelain-pretty little girl. Truly an English rose. That milky-white rosy skin, blue eyes, amazing (brown) eyebrows & hair. Wow. I had not seen such a beautiful little girl in a long time. The photograph itself? Also oozing in English charm. Kudos, HRH.

Next on my wish list (sorry for the greediness). At least TWO pictures of P. George & P. Charlotte together and TWO more of all four of the family members (William? Kate? Borderline chopped liver at this point. ;) KIDDING).

Thanks for yet another lovely blog post....S.

  19. Beautiful pictures of Princess Charlotte, I think she looks more like Prince William, she doesn't even look that much like a girl. If she was wearing boys clothes she would pass as boy. The clothes are super cute though, if I have a baby girl that's exactly how I would dress her!

I noticed that Charlotte don't have her ears pierced yet, I was wondering if this a English thing? Because where I came from (Brazil) baby girls have their ears pierced in their first couple of months.

    1. I agree that she looks very like Prince William! In the UK few children have their ears pierced, at least not until around the age of 10. Many places even have an age restriction!

    2. Well, I can only speak for me and the suburnan/rural area in Bavari I live in, but here in Germany, almost no baby girls have their ears passed (except a lot of the daughters of immigrants from places like the middle east, africa,...). Most girls get their ears pierced at one point while in elementary school (a lot get it as a present for their first communion). I got mine at the age of 4, but I didn't get along well with them and since then haven't worn any earrings, I couldn't even put them into my ears anymore. Is it really common in Brazil? Seems very early to have a baby's ears pierced... why not later when they can make decisions and understand what's happening? I'm just curious :)

    3. Hi Sonja, it's absolutely normal, I don't think I ever meet a girl who didn't have her ears pierced as a baby. I honestly never thought about it before, but as far I know babies have they ears pierced between 1 month and 3 months old (done by the pediatrician). In most of my pictures as a baby I'm have earrings on, so I guess I was very young as well when I have my done.

I don't know what is the reason behind this, but I suppose has to do with minimize the pain, as older you get more thick the cartilage becomes.

I have no idea this was considered a wrong thing in some countries! It's obviously weird for me to see a girl without earrings (a baby without earrings for me is boy), but I respect each one culture. And of course, Charlotte is english, she should follow her culture.

  20. Been thinking, and as per usual, this leads me off-topic, but here goes! Kate is clearly a talented photographer; wouldn't it be lovely if someone gifted her with a quality underwater camera and lessons to go with? Imagine the beautiful pics of tropical fish she could blow up, frame, and hang in the kids rooms. Very enjoyable for Kate--an entire underwater world for her to explore, sans paps, and very colourful, intriguing and restful for the kids. Yeah, I like that idea.

  22. Love her outfit, and she is so cute. To me she looks exactly like her grandmother Carole Middleton. BUT I love, love, love that chair fabric! And I am so intrigued by the room behind. I would love to get a look into her house and her decorating. Princess Diana used to have pictures of her in her sitting room all the time. Would love it if Kate did the same. I don't try to dress like her but I might try to decorate like her because I am so in love with this fabric.
