Look-Back: Centrepoint in Ralph Lauren

Monday, December 21, 2015

I know some of you are hankering after Kate's glossy locks √† 2011. So, I thought it might be nice to look back to a great appearance that happened today four years ago...and the hair was perfect. One of my favorite early engagements undertaken by the Duke and Duchess was their visit to William's patronage, Centrepoint. The couple made an evening appearance on December 21, 2011.

Kate was wearing a figure hugging Ralph Lauren dress with a cinched in waist and her favorite Rumba boots. Of course, she was also sporting the engagement ring we were still getting used to sparkling on her finger. The ducal pair pitched in with a cooking class where they made mince pies and gingerbread.

Since this was still within the first year of their marriage, these joint appearances were still so exciting. Even something as simple as Kate getting hands on in a kitchen were exciting snaps.

This olive green dress was picture perfect on Kate. It complimented her tan, set off her glossy chestnut curls, and made her green eyes pop. In this picture you can see Kate's Kiki McDonough "Grace" studs. They are big topaz stones surrounded by diamonds. The earrings have been staples in the Duchess's closet, although we have not seen as much of them recently.

William was (and is) such a perfect gentleman. I think everyone's favorite photos were of the newly married prince escorting Kate to the waiting car.

It was a special night for William and Kate, too. Centrepoint is a charity near and dear to William's heart. He has been a patron for many years and the cause--homeless young people--is very possibly his greatest priority. Introducing his bride to the group's work was obviously a bit of a milestone. Both the royals seemed to love their night out in support of Centrepoint.

  3. Thank you, Mr. Pryce!! Notice the chestnut brown color? Much more striking on her than the lighter color she has been sporting.

I also think her stylist was using a glaze on her hair during this time. It adds no color but just makes your hair shine. It is like $20 and does wonders for brown hair especially. Try it! Lasts about a month. Make sure they don't use a color version!!

And RL is the best. I love sweater dresses too. Must have a good figure, but they look cozy and sexy at the same time which is hard to do.

And I love those earrings, the design. Didn't realize they weren't real diamonds.

    1. She may be using a lighter hair color because growing out gray hair doesn't contrast as much as with a darker color. Many women go lighter for that reason when they go gray and we do know Kate has quite a bit of gray hair (from photos published during her latest pregnancy.) That said, the current color seems to be closer to the color her hair was in her adolescence to mid-20s. So it may be closer to her natural color which if so, probably makes it easier to maintain dye-wise for that reason too.

    2. All good points. They could add in some more shades both darker as well as the lighter to help cover grey also. The solid colors with out the variety of shades are the worst for disguising the grey coming in. Blonde is a bit more forgiving but she may just need to resign herself to being at the hairdresser every 4 weeks to the day. I have to do that.

    3. Anon 2:54 those gloss treatments are nice! I haven't done one since my wedding...I should probably book that at my next haircut! Deep conditioning treatments at a salon can be nice too, especially during winter (winters are very dry where I live). Inexpensive, but big impact.

    4. I don't think gray maintenance is an issue for her. When you are one of the most photographed people in the world, I think you make the time for taking care of your hair.

I think the darker hair is closer to her real hair color, the color she was in college. But she was a flat brown then, this brown is a richer, warm color. My favorite.

Oh yes, especially for the price, huge impact! I am in a family of blondes and the glaze helps my brown hair shine like theirs. And the cost is great, I glaze every month, very worth it. And the deep conditioning too - amazing.

Lol, makes me want to run to the salon right now!:)

    6. Anonymous 11:27...I agree she probably spends alot if time on her hair. But the pictures published when she was pregnant (and probably forgoing at least some dye jobs) suggested she may be approaching 40% gray as can occur in the late 20s/early 30s. In that case she'd likely need touch ups almost weekly..especially at the part in her hair and that's a big time commitment for any mother of two small kids. As to be color I've seen some univ pics where she had dark hair but some when younger and older than that where she didn't. So who knows!

    7. Pregnant women don't color as often because of the baby, that's what I think we were seeing in those pregnant gray pictures.

Once a week color? Err.... Hair that is completely gray can be colored everything three weeks and be fully concealed. No one colors every week.

My mom, who is very high maintenance, colors every three weeks and she is all gray. There is no way Kate would need to color every week if she went back to a darker color.

The exception might be if you went platinum blonde 100% and were covering black hair.

    8. Well hair grows an average of 1/2 inch a month. So after 3 weeks if Kate's grows at the average rate, she'd have 3/8 inch of grey roots showing at the part in her hair. That's alot for someone photographed as often as she is. I know many pregnant women stop coloring altogether.. that's probably why we saw how grey Kate's hair now is. If she was blonde there wouldn't be such a contrast with grey. And too how often touch ups have to be done depends on hair style. Pulled back in a ponytail grey will show at the front quickly. Also wearing a part versus have layers all over--more grey grow-out will show.

  4. This is interesting..... Some are questioning whether Charlotte was photoshopped into the new family picture. At first that made me laugh, but then I looked at both pictures together (the two where she is wearing the same dress) and I can see what they are saying.

I have recently just finished a marketing campaign at work. Photoshop is an amazing thing. Would also answer why she is wearing the same dress when her closet must be full of adorable items!

She looks placed right in the middle of the picture.

    1. Yes, I've seen those comments too. I don't believe it for a moment personally. There could be a multitude of reasons why she is wearing the same dress, but its a beautiful dress and the Duchess didn't really think that the first one was going to be released to the public - the story said it was released because they wanted to thank the public and because they liked it. Happy holidays everyone.

    4. I'm not saying I agree with Anon 3:21, and I'm not saying the Cambridges are the Kardashians, but the Kardashians famously photoshopped family members into Christmas photos that weren't present for the photo shoot. It could be possible Charlotte was sick or fussy and their schedules didn't allow for a reshoot. I have friends who have redone family photos due to various things that didn't work out or they weren't satisfied with.

      Delete
    5. I realize I will sound older than my years (lol), but has the world gone mad? What is this obsession with photoshopping, and the assumption that everyone does it? The idea that Charlotte was "pasted in" is just unbelievable to me. What a sad and phony prospect that would be. W&K are not the K family. To be honest, I hate to even see their name mentioned on a blog devoted to Kate. If Charlotte was sick or fussy the photos would have been taken another day.

It is important to check the credibility of a source before making accusations, veiled or not, based on information from that source.
I really don't think people realise that making these sorts of comments is not
only insulting,(to both the accuser and accused), it borders on libel-if it casts disrepute and harm to the photographer's reputation and is not true. It's not harmless fun. I don't care how many people do it.

      Delete
    7. Libel???? Are you from the US??? People are allowed to have opinions, lol. Can't stop that!

I don't think it was an attack on the photog, but a comment on Will and Kate. Clearly they would have authorized it since people are speculating that the picture was taken from Kate's personal shot of Charlotte.

People have opinions and make comments about public figures. We allow that here.

    8. Not really surprising that the Duke and Duchess don't release too many photos---there is always someone to accuse them of something. Why can we not just enjoy photos of a lovely family?

    9. Agree with you Jean. It is a lovely photo. There seems to be one Anonymous who is driving the critical debate here. Language is the same in every multiple post. Seasons greetings to all.

    10. Jean-well said.

Anonymous 6:14-Say whatever you choose. "Freedom of the Press" does not protect one from the consequences of what one says. Even in the US.

The deletion of jowls and lines from one recent royal photo is considered acceptable,
apparently. If an outside element is photoshopped into a picture (a baby, for
example) the photographer/publisher must label it as photoshopped.A photographer
will not risk his entire career on one photo, no matter who the subject.

      Delete
    11. Anon 6:14, "opinion" is one thing, however accusations are another. The fact that you state that it was not an "attack on the photog, but a comment on Will and Kate." Indicates that this is then an attack on them. They were kind enough to share a loving picture of their family and they are accused of it not being real..

Jean you are so right, thank you.

    12. This is a somewhat international blog simply because the commenters are from all over the world. I think it is very "European" to think that people shouldn't comment, question, have feelings about, etc., pictures W and K release. To think it was "nice" of them to release photos and no one should say a word about them is really immature and illustrates a subservient attitude toward the royal family that is laughable.

People think the picture looks a little strange, therefore they are thinking, what could it be? My point, EVA B, was that it was not an attack on the photographer and would have had to be done with W & K permission, meaning the photographer wasn't doing anything underhanded. Nor did I say W & K were either.

Photoshopping isn't a mortal sin, everyone does it. The questions, IMO, are funny.

What's not funny is the hyper sensitivity that some have about anything concerning W & K, more so probably than W & K actually do.

Was the baby photoshopped in? Who knows. The two pictures, because she is wearing the same outfit and has that "placed" look, made people question it.

In Europe, they have very strict laws about what people can and can't say, to the point of ridiculousness. We, as Americans, value the right of free speech. You can't stop people from having opinions and you can't muddle them by trying to call them "accusations" and, therefore, making simply opinions have a nefarious tone.

    13. Well, Anon 6:14, this American respectfully disagrees with you.

Yes, they are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, members of the BRF, and they release official photos for this reason, and, people will comment. However, at the end of the day, they are still a mother and father sharing photos of their children and it doesn't make the more micro analysis of it any kinder. Sorry, but I don't see this as an issue based on nationality; I see it as basic human kindness, and good taste and manners. Having the right to say something doesn't automatically make it the wisest choice to exercise. It's a Christmas photo of a family for goodness sake. I wonder if anyone here could handle a fraction of the microanalysis directed at W&K. I really do.

And with respect, I think it is unfortunate that you felt the need to dismiss people as immature or subservient for suggesting that it was nice of W&K to release photos. It may be expected of them because of their position, but it is a goodwill gesture. And how sad that the goodwill doesn't always flow both ways.

  6. Throwback Tuesday! It was a lot of fun when early in the marriage Kate had joint engagements with William or other members of the BRF. It was nice to see them interacting together, and sent a clear message that they would support her .

We probably all know that while these sweater dresses are classic, they are not forgiving! Of course, Kate has a very toned and slim figure.

For how much Ralph Lauren Kate seems to have in her wardrobe, I'm still disappointed that she didn't attend his dinner at Windsor Castle. I'm sure she had her reasons, but since it was at a royal residence and William attended, I didn't quite understand.

  7. I'm sorry, I know this is off topic, but I heard a history that Pandora Delevingne (mother of Cara Delevingne) is Kate's new stylist, that she was the one responsible for the Jenny Packham and the Erdem dresses she wore recently. Do you think this is true? This story is in many websites like Grazia per example. It sounds weird to me because Pandora is much older then Kate.

    4. I thought it was just one of those split second shots that caught her in the middle of doing something innocuous, like smoothing her dress or adjusting her belt as Faith says.

    5. That's exactly what I thought, Jane in Canada. She was probably smoothing the front of her dress and the paps used the shot to create a headline. I love seeing them together - so sweet.

    6. This particular picture may be just an odd shot. But the vast majority of the time Kate does hold her purse in front of her lower stomach area even when walking (I tried doing it when walking and it feels awkward to me) but I have noticed recently Carole does the same thing. I had assumed it was nervousness with Kate but maybe not if its a "family trait."

  9. Lovely to see Kate when her hair was long and glossy. I am definitely one of the people who misses her "old" hair. Ralph Lauren is one of my two favourite designers, and I love this dress, and the way it looks on Kate. Thank you for your great posts, Jane; I really enjoyed the December retrospective as well.

And I would love to see this dress in red worn with her houndstooth coat. Imagine it combined with the same boots from above, and this hat...

  11. I enjoy these themed retrospectives. And, since we are on the topic of hair styles...how about one on the Duchess' early styles where her naturally curly hair was allowed to flow? Her natural waves are enviable and she looks wonderful; with fascinators or loose. There's also pics from the SE Asia trip where she looks fabulous. It's possible she's natural at home but has the blow outs for appearances. But why should the curls be deemed inappropriate for public events? Hopefully we'll see some curls in the future. Maybe India.

This dress was so figure hugging amd highlighted her small waist. It was also perfect fot the occasion. It must be so much easier to dress for (royal) women than for men because their only options are 1) suit -> formal 2) trousers & shirt/sweater -> casual. :)

Didn't that brown coat have a red lining? I thought she looked very stylish and appropriate-and she was pregnant.
I think it would be nice to see her natural hair, other than glimpses from time to time.It may be she gets chemical straightening, not just daily comb-outs, but somehow I doubt it.
India will be a challenge, hair-wise. Lots of up-do styles.
