[Updated] Royal Girls Night at Clos Maggiore! Kate, Pippa, and Carole Spotted at London Restaurant

Friday, December 4, 2015

Well, some fun photos surfaced today. A few surreptitious snaps were taken of Kate dining with her mother and Pippa on Tuesday (December 1st) at Clos Maggiore, an intimate restaurant in London. A fellow diner took a photo of Kate in the candlelit restaurant, and you can see her over the shoulder of the woman's dining companion.

[Update] Eagle eyed Sara on Twitter pointed out that Kate's Mulberry "Bayswater" clutch is sitting on the ledge behind her! Also, Kaye in the comments has noted that Carole might be leaning in to chat with the man who appears to be James Middleton, so it may have been the whole Middleton family?

Clos Maggiore offers what is described as contemporary French cuisine, with what appears to be an Italian influence :
Clos Maggiore is an oasis of calm in the heart of Covent Garden. Influenced by the stylish country inns of Provence and Tuscany the unique interiors create an unparalleled warmth and intimacy. The apple blossomed adorned conservatory features a fully retractable glass roof creating a bright and airy dining space in summer months and in winter months it is transformed at night by candles, starlight and a crackling fire.
Doesn't it look delightful? It almost reminds me of Kate's wedding theme with the interior theme of a an outdoor space. I love it. It looks magical.

Clos Maggiore
Josephine W was also a diner that night and she captured a shot of Carole, who was Kate's dinner partner. Ashley reported on Twitter that Pippa was also present. I haven't seen photos of Pippa, but it certainly makes sense that she would be along for the festive meal.

Just the next night, Carole and Pippa attended the Henry van Straubenzee Christmas Carol Concert, but without Kate. If you missed that post, you can read it here.

It looks like Kate had a cozy and lovely night with her mom and sister! It is nice to see a shot of the Duchess out enjoying an ordinary evening with her family--although, I frankly think she is probably out more than many suspect. We only get the occasional snap. Speaking to that, I know some people will ask, so I will preemptively answer. If Kate was photographed every time she stepped out the door, it would start to feel a little odd, but I don't think there is anything unusual in the occasional excited fan taking a photo of one of the most famous women in the world. I think Kate expects it, I think the public can enjoy the occasional celebrity shot. That's my two cents. :)

  1. I have to admit that I enjoyed that tiny peek into Kate's evening! I love how close she is to her mom and sister.

  2. Lovely post ~
on the Carole photo, is she leaning in to speak to James Middleton? Hard to be sure.
I've always avoided winter travel, but London
    looks so wonderful & festive.

    1. London at Christmas is one of the most beautiful and amazing places I've ever been. Don't delay - you should go!

    2. The man next to Carole looks very like James Middleton, but I think he is actually someone sitting at a table behind! The angle he's sitting at isn't quite right...

    3. I really like the overall "atmosphere" of the restaurant. This is one to add to the list for my trip to London. :)

And I am relieved to know that I am not the only one...it does look like James.

    4. The restaurant has such a great fairyland look. I am also more than ready to get on a plane and fly to London. I have always wanted to see it decorated for Christmas and go to Royal Albert Hall to hear the performance of Handel's Messiah. Someday may be this dream will come true!

  4. I'm not criticizing Kate, but this debunks the opinions that she stays at home to put her kids to bed and be present. I think she can be very present and hands-on, and still go out at night. So there are other things at play, that we are not aware of, that determines why she misses so many private social events. Sounds like a lovely night out!

Is she wearing a white dress or top?

Possibly James, but still no Mike. Supports my theory that sometimes he must be in Berkshire holding down the Party Pieces fort.

    1. Person who took photo clearly stated that only Carole and Pippa were present. Possible that William was home with the kids that evening, so one can speculate that they prefer to try and have one parent at home with the kids whenever possible. We can go round and round in circles speculating, but surely the choices they make in their private life is just that - private!

    2. Anon 10:00, I totally agree. Private life...personal choices. And excellent point about William.

    3. You can still be home with your kids and go out, I don't think that this means you have to be home every single night with them

      It is fine

    4. Totally agree as well

    5. Since William was not along he was probably at home with the children. The next night Kate was at home with them and William was out at a private function (I do not think the Carol Concert is a royal function). It is great that Kate can enjoy a dinner out and the ballet (as has been reported) with her mother and sister!

    6. 9:12 clearly stated that of course Kate can be a mum and socialize too. BUT her office constantly trots out the "busy mom" excuse every time she doesn't appear for something, like she is stuck at home with baby food in her hair. 9:12 simply expresses that this is clearly NOT the case and using the kids as an excuse all the time is laughable. She isn't the average overworked mum.

    7. It has been quite obvious that since the babies came along, they have done few joint engagements in the evening---just the obvious royal engagements that demand the couple.
Of course they could hire more nannies and do more, but I suspect that like most parents, bath and bedtime with the little ones is special. Even the most rumbustious 2-years-old becomes all cuddly at bedtime.
Even HM did fewer evening engagements.
As the second in line, they have some leeway to enjoy their children.
We do not, of course know whether they occasionally go out to supper whilst in Norfolk, as people there are pretty used to the Royal family being around and take no notice.

    8. I don't believe her office ever trots out an excuse for not appearing. It is the media and public who perceive things as they wish too.

    9. I agree she is not the average overworked mum but I think that in spite of having help, she is very much a mother whose children are the first priority. I don't think they are an "excuse" for not being elsewhere. She seems genuinely to whish to be with them as much as possible and to dislike leaving them. That is not the case for every mother (no judgement there) some are so relieved when they go back to work...

  5. What a lovely post! I am glad there are random pictures of Kate out there like this. It doesn't appear she was disturbed and I agree, she probably expects it. Love that she has such a close knit family. <3

This restaurant llooksjust so great! I understand why Kate likes it :)
At first I thought this coat could be the max mara from her 1st visit to cambridge. It looks like a pale rosé or cream colour to me, but that could also be because of the lighting... but then I looked it up on Kate's Clothes (such a great site jane, i love it!!) And remembered the high collar...

I was just browsing Kate's clothes again trying to find a similar dress or coat...
So the kind of ruffles/garthering on the shoulder made me think it was the coat with the peter pan collar she wore in Belgium. But then I thought that a coat would probably be too warm inside and maybe she was wearing the Joseph 'Scala' dress?

    Any ideas/opinions on this?

    1. I've been going through her clothes too checking for a match. So hard to tell from this photo but it looks like whatever she is wearing has pleats or gathering at the shoulders with a gauzy semi sheer sleeve. The only idea I came up with was this blouse she wore for a charity meeting in 2012. Even then, it's hard to tell because one can't see the shoulders or the sleeves well. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2136176/Kate-Middleton-demure-white-Royal-couple-attend-Princes-Charities-Forum.html

    2. Or this Beulah that she wore on the Southeast Asian tour. Not sure the shoulders look right though.https://www.pinterest.com/pin/439452876109102299/

    3. Sonja, I also think it's the Joseph Scala dress. I checked it out on Kate's clothes and it looks like this dress also has this sort of gathering at the shoulders and the sleeves are wide...

    4. It looks like a lighter material, also the sleeves are folding at the shoulder join so that makes me think it's more like something with padded shoulders?

      Delete
    5. It looks like a thin sheath dress over a liner slip style dress. I do not know about the padding but it looks like some tucks in the sleeves. ali Also maybe a scalloped edge to the neckline.

    6. I think it is probably something that hasn't been photographed before. Unfortunatel . :-(

    7. My guess would be the Scala dress. The color and material appear to be consistent with these photos.

    8. I think we need to get Jane to weigh in. She knows Kate's wardrobe front and back. Btw, was the contest winner announced? I must have missed the name.

    9. It's the Ted Baker "Sturdy" blouse..

    10. So, the first piece that I suggested above. How can you be sure though?

    11. I can't be sure... It's very similar though.

  8. I agree with the poster above who said that although man resembles James, he is probably sitting at the table behind them. (And the original poster said it was only Carole, Pippa, and Kate.) Also, in the original photo, you can see the back of a head to the left of the woman in the picture, and it looks a lot like Pippa's hair!

    1. Wouldn't it be wonderful if they hired Middleton family look-a-likes as royal protection officers ?
(Although I guess there'd be no real point, as part of the protection is surely to be seen as such.)

Bottom line, it looks like a delightful gathering, and Sarah, I totally agree about the sleek, dark hair
      looking like Pippa's.

  13. This seems to be a very special treat for all of us Kate and family watchers! We very rarely get to see intimate settings and two pictures! Very very special! I know they must hate having their dinner interrupted by such things as this but had I been there I'd have done was same!

  14. The 4th photo reads 'content unavailable'(there is a space). Haven't read the comments here, and don't know if the photo's not available because I am in the UK. I can't quite see Kate's hair style in this restaurant photo, is there a fancy roll-back from the front, or just clipped back?
