Kate Wears Clever Temperley to Queen's Birthday Party in New Delhi

Monday, April 11, 2016

This evening, the Duke and Duchess highlighted the Queen by attending a 90th birthday party for Her Majesty. As dusk approached in New Delhi, William and Kate joined gathered guests on the lush lawn of the British High Commissioner's home for a twilight reception. Kate didn't disappoint, debuting an ensemble from Temperley London.

The cocktail reception featured a host of passed drinks and hors d'oeuvres as guests mingled and chatted with the Duke and Duchess. Kate's maxi skirt highlighted her slim waist and she told one woman she keeps slender because she is always "running around after her kids."

I loved the smiles on everyone's faces. There was so much excitement and joy at this event. Fans are generally excited to meet William and Kate, but I think there is an inherent exuberance in the Indian people that is shining in a particular way on this tour.

The royals moved inside for the remainder of the evening's program which included a sweet address by Prince William in which he shared a message from the Queen:
I am incredibly lucky to have my grandmother in my life. As she turns 90, she is a remarkably energetic and dedicated guiding force for her family. And I am so glad that my children are having the chance to get to know The Queen. George and Charlotte. too, will discover how lucky they are to have such a wonderful great-grandmother – a role model for the rest of their lives. Now, it is important that everyone here tonight understands that I am here as The Queen’s representative. She may be my grandmother but she is also very much the boss! And with that in mind she has given me a message that I am privileged to read out to you all tonight. From HM the Queen:
"Prince Philip and I send our warmest good wishes to all you attending this special Garden Party.
"I am delighted that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been able to join you this afternoon during their visit to your country. I have fond memories of our previous visits to India. This event today is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the enduring friendship between our two countries, our shared culture and the business opportunities we can create together. It is with great pleasure that I entrust another generation of my family to strengthen and renew our bonds. Elizabeth R."
Now I can report back to Granny that I have done my duty! Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining with us to wish The Queen a very happy. birthday. Bahot dhanyavaad.
The two were offered a saber with which to cut the Queen's birthday cake. Kate happily passed the honor to William, whose face had written all over it: "Give that here, I've got this."

We never got to see a photo of William and Kate cutting their wedding cake, but as we approach their 5th anniversary, it was fun to see them cut this cake. Squint your eyes just a bit, and it could be the night April 29th in 2011 in a glittering reception room in Buckingham Palace... :)

Kate: "Are you going to give me a piece of cake now?"

Tapping Temperley was genius for tonight's event. The brand's style profile is the perfect bridge between India and the UK and I thought that Kate "fit in" with the assembled saris so very well in this. It was particularly appropriate because it wasn't a dress at all, but a crop top and a high-waisted maxi skirt, and many (all?) saris are two-pieces, so although Kate didn't go all the way and show any skin, it felt like she was adhering to the general design concept. This is particularly evident from the back:

Believe it or not, this is actually palest pink silk organza with black stitching and some crystal detailing. I just don't see much pink, but maybe it was more apparent in person?  It shows up a little better in the photo above. Perhaps the high intensity flashes of the professional cameras were washing it out.

Kate wore mystery earrings that she has had for many years. We saw them way back in 2007 and Pips has borrowed them, too. Regrettably, they have stymied the most clever Kate-Analysts.

Kate carried a new Prada clutch and wore shoes that have not been positively IDed. I tend to agree with the thought they are Gianvito Rossi, since Kate generally shops the same designers--as do we all.

It was a lovely night and Kate looked magnificent. This was a huge hit and a very smart move. Thus far, Kate has stuck to her own labels, apart from the Anita Dongre. I wonder if this will be the case throughout the tour. I expected more Indian designers, but we are only on day 2. I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds for fashion watchers. Because Kate will be hiking, we will have a mix of styles!  If you missed the post covering Kate's white Wickstead, pop here for that!

  1. I absolutely LOVED this. I think this may be my favorite look of the tour thus far. And I'm loving this tour period. Much of the attire is such a departure for Kate in terms of design, but the silhouettes are very much her. This may be in my top three evening gowns - the JP teal from the Olympic evening and the white lace McQueen we have only recently seen through the special on the Queen. Beautiful look altogether. I wish she would be as adventurous in England as she has been in India in terms of patterns and designs!

    1. That was my exact thought Laura. An art deco stained glass. I am really pleasantly surprised at the creativity that her clothing choices are exhibiting on this tour. I feel like the Kate of 2011-2012 is back.

  3. I think this is pretty and fits her frame. I'd like it even more if the top was lined differently. The sweetheart-shaped white lining peeping up at the top has the look to me of lingerie showing even though I know its not. I'd maybe like it better if the lining extended up to the neck and over to where the sleeves start at the last vertical line. Or if it was styled differently somehow. But its nice.

  5. Lovely gown-I've liked all the looks so far. I think she, like all of the royal women, goes all out when she's visiting a foreign country and representing the home team.

There was a nice news story on the NBC Nightly News about the trip, paying tribute to strong women in William's life-his grandmother, mother and wife. http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/video/cdc-zika-virus-is-scarier-than-we-initially-thought-663771715985

  6. I thought that this outfit was interesting.I liked it,but I didn't love it.I can appreciate the black embroidery on what appears as white, but is actually very pale pink?!However I think I would loved this if the embroidery pattern on the crop top and skirt were the same.Hmm I prefer the embroidery on the skirt to the embroidery on the top.
Btw today was the first time I actually read the Cambridges full itinerary for the trip and was quite dissapointed on how there was no scheduled engagement to a mental health facility. It would have been nice if they had extended their mental health campaigning in India and the other places that they visit.A government study shows that 5% of India's population suffer from mental health disorder. Here's a link offering more statistics on India's mental health http://m.huffpost.com/in/entry/8267510
Their tour length is very short and insufficient to cover a lot of ground.

  7. I literally couldn't have loved this more. I LOOVVEE it, it's hands down one of my favourite Kate outfits of all time. I also loved that Kate wore open-toed shoes, which is relatively and I thought her hairstyle was so perfect with this. I only wish that she had gone for some Royal collection earrings - I guess they're on my mind because I mentioned the sapphire fringe earrings last night and again, I think they would have worked here.

PS I know this is random and I doubt this is what Kate was thinking of, but there was a sari in almost exactly this type of pattern and colour scheme being sold at Indian Textiles, which is a shop in the Taj Mahal Hotel, when I was there in December. I very much doubt that Kate could have known that but it speaks to your point, Jane, that this dress has some sari-like qualities.

  8. In a word...perfect! But I am stunned to read that it's pale pink. I was convinced that it is black and (off) white.

It reminds me of this ...

Yes, I also don't really see any pink... but maybe it's the lighting who knows

Yes, this dress was also by temperley and for a concert, right? Both dresses (or the dress and the crop top + skirt) look very temperly-esque if you know what I mean ;)

  9. I think this is the most youthful and adventurous frock Kate has worn in a long time! And still work appropriate! I love it and she looked really pretty in it. I am enjoying Kate's approach to this trip sartorially- I love that she's playing with colors and prints more too. I am glad she was in cream today- I am hoping for a bold color scheme in front of the Taj Mahal (although she could repeat 2 of her Diane von F. dresses- the bright green worn in 2011 and the blue print wrap dress she wore down under in 2014).

  10. This is a strikingly beautiful and appropriate outfit for this event. I only wish Kate would embrace jewelry. The earrings are ok, but that outfit needs bracelets or bangles - something else to accessorize it and jazz it up. This outing is much better than relatively boring white dress from the morning event however. The Wickstead is a fine dress but seemed a little sedate in the surroundings. It may be better with a nice hat and again, some jewelry to add a bit of interest and sparkle.

    1. Agreed. I think I'm the earring grinch. Those earrings look awful and cheap. She should get a pair of diamonds studs and stick with them.

      Delete
    2. Kate talks with her hands- if she wore bracelets or cuffs, that could be distracting. And if I were shaking as many hands as she has this week, I would be afraid that my jewelry wouldn't make it!

  11. I really love this ensemble! She looks so elegant and the style is perfectly in line with the engagement. I would have double loved it if she had chosen this Temperley high-waisted skirt and top:
    http://www.temperleylondon.com/shop/long-carmelina-skirt.html
The colors in this one would be so stunning on her.

I am also in love with the shoes! I hope this is a sign of things to come in the footwear department! The earrings are so-so for me. I just live for the times she wears the bling. I wonder if we're not seeing the really expensive royal jewels because they flew commercial and thought it too much of a risk.

  12. I am just now catching up on the Duke & Duchess' trip to India today. Looking at all of the pictures, I notice there is something different about Catherine's face--in all of them.

It has taken awhile to figure out that she is using less liner on her lower lash-line, and it has opened her eyes up more. She's still using a thin line, and of course Mascara, but her eyes are so big and beautiful now!

  13. Forgive me, I just did not care for it...too busy, too geometric, particular the heavy, dark pattern on what almost amounts to sheer nightgown fabric. Did look more like a Gothic Stained Glass than a lighthearted Indian Sari pattern. The see-through white camisole was tacky and the skirt length again too long. To me, the outfit wore Kate, not the other way around. Seemed like a case of trying too hard. Believe me, Kate has worn things I've fallen in love with...don't hate the messenger.

  16. This was absolute perfection in my opinion. The pattern and embroidery with a nod to India.....a crop top (would NEVER have predicted that..) making it young and trendy....the hair in a half up do was relaxed yet beautiful AND....wait for it...ANOTHER PAIR OF NEW SHOES! I am just beside myself. I can't wait until we get a positive identification on these.

Really for a garden party..this struck the right notes on every level. And I really love the way here hair has been a bit softer...nice beachy waves...I am sure the humidity can take credit for that. But I really like it.

I agree with you Royalfan...I would have never guessed the pale pink....need to take another look at those pics.

I watched a video on ITN of them at the EACH awards launch today...Kate looked so young and engaged. It made me think that this trip maybe has provided her with the first night of uninterupted sleep she has had since Charlotte was born!! She really is looking rested and relaxed...

    Can't wait for tomorrow!

  17. I love the idea of cropped top and maxi skirt! I think the embroidery on the top is too busy though, and I don't like the arch like shape on it. I like the skirt better.

Got me thinking about a dress, also by Temperley, Pippa wore to a wedding.

This has been my favourite outfite of the entire tour so far, it is stunning!
Temperley is a perfect match for an Indian evening and I just love the design. I could also imagine that crop top paired with high waisted black skinny jeans , but unfortunately it is way too expensive for a top for me.

I think Kate's hairstyle was very very pretty tonight. Wish she'd wear that more ofte, also for daytime engagements.
William's speech was lovely. HM must be proud of those 2.

  22. I love this look from head to toe. It's stunning! I'm particularly drawn to the fact that it's separates, which was unexpected. I don't think Kate has ever worn anything else like this. Her hair is on point. The soft curls are really romantic and work beautifully with her ensemble.

I've just been watching some video footage of the event and I can't help but think how daunting it must be to step out in front of all of those people. Then to have to walk down that corridor surrounded by a sea of faces, every single one focused intently on you. Eeep! Yet Kate handles it so gracefully. William really did make the perfect choice in Kate, and it is always lovely to see them together.

Hhhmmmm..... that aisle down the middle of the guests has me thinking of Westminster Abbey and that long walk Kate made on their wedding day. I think I'll go and re-watch it while I'm waiting for their next engagement! ;) (Any excuse to relieve it, hey??) See you all on Day 3!!

Glad to see the youthful hairstyle too and a change from the norm samey samey look - I imagine, having hair the quality and thickness of Kate's is quite annoying in the Indian Heat - overall a lovely ensemble - good girl Kate !

  25. This is one of my all-time favorite Kate looks! Amazing! Even more amazing that it is a two-piece! I love the fact it's blush pink underneath, and the embroidery is almost architectural, giving the illusion of a structured sleeve or bodice - kind of McQueen-esque, so so beautiful! It really pops with Kate's beautiful face, hair and eyes. The earrings go well, although I might have preferred a more expensive pair. Love the clutch and shoes as well, she is truly amazing in this dress!

  30. After seeing photos of William and Catherine's time at the street children's refuge, I am
conflicted over my choice of favorite moment of this tour so far.. I may have to change it to Kate's sitting on the floor in the midst of the very involved youngsters, happily sketching away. The official
D&DOC site must include that. There's the truth about Kate. She cares and she connects.

I understand William specially requested this visit. Anyone else read that?
KP twitter is worth checking out, if you haven't already done so.
There were some very hefty-looking guards escorting the Cambridges into the area. I'm glad
KP waiting until it was all over and they were safe to announce the visit.

  31. Loved all three looks today. The red maxi was gorgeous and Kate looked especially young and fresh. So nice to see her in flats..her posture and demeanor reflected how comfortable she was and how beautiful she felt. The mint lace was so pretty and very flattering..loved her hair. Kate looked more like herself today, soft and glowing...that's the Kate I've been missing.

  32. The pattern and shape on the dress is gorgeous. I'm not completely sold on the crop top, I would like to see it as one complete dress but I think it is a lovely nod to the style of the sari. Overall I think it is one of the loveliest pieces she has worn for some time.

Do we know who the woman in green is? If I'm not mistaken she seems to be in most background shots on this tour following Kate. I wonder if she is a new advisor or a special one for this tour? She is always fabulously dressed!
