Morning Jeep Safari in Kaziranga National Park

Wednesday, April 13, 2016

William and Kate had an (almost) crack of dawn start this morning to their full day in Kaziranga National Park. The two were to be treated to a jeep tour of the park to view the animals which make their home in this UNESCO World Heritage refuge.

Both William and Kate love nature and enjoy these safari type activities--just think about where William proposed to Kate! It wasn't surprising that they had a special glow as they set out for their adventure..although it seemed like William was still rubbing some sleep away just before they pulled out!

Kate had brought along her camera and on several occasions whipped it out to take some snaps. The Duchess enjoys amateur photography and as you know, documents these tours herself for her private collection.

Scott Furssdonn Wood

You might recall that Kate released photos she took while touring Borneo during her 2012 tour of Southeast Asia.

She likes black and white, but also released color shots. You can see her collection at the Mirror here

I suspect in the future we will see a lot of these photos. I could see Kate putting together an entire exhibit in the future for charity--sort of the way Diana sold her dresses. It would very neat and I am sure it would raise a king's ransom.

Kensington Palace

On longer tours the Cambridges often take days off to rest and relax. This tour is short enough they are pushing right through, but I think this morning was their recharge time. Up on the back of the jeep--even with a car in front photographing them as they rode along, they seemed to get lost on the beauty of their surroundings and enjoying each other's company.

Kate went casual and relaxed, wearing skinnies and printed blouse, her Sebago flats, and a scarf to keep away the dawn chill--a scarf that was quickly discarded. The trousers are from Zara and they are "Low Rise Biker Trousers" but I intend to call them the Pangolin Pants.

They are (a) the exact color of pangolins, and (b) those ridges remind me of pangolin scales. So, hereby known as the Pangolin Pants. Before those of you who bought these rush to your email to send me a nasty-gram about how much you love them, I like them, too! I think they are cool. A pangolin reference does not preclude coolness.

Visiting with Park Rangers

These pants are a little edgy and Kate is not edgy. She styled them in a feminine fashion, with the ruffled blouse, a scarf, and loose hair. The contrast was fun and something Kate pulls off really well. It was a great look on her!

Her blouse is by RM Williams out of Australia and features small diamonds in navy and gold and ruffles down the front. Kate turned to her citrine drop earrings which she loves so much to complete her look.  Although the Duchess arrived in a scarf of her own, she quickly crumpled it into her elbow to receive a gifted welcome scarf from park staff. This is a beautiful scarf featuring rhinos another animals and bright greens and reds. This will probably be a piece Charlotte plays with growing up!

This event was really fun, both for the royals and those of us watching. The fashion was a nice change of pace and it was fun to see Kate switch it up a little from J.Brand.  The couple's afternoon is covered in a second post which you can find here

  2. Loved William's outfit today more than Kate's! Jane pls do a post of What Wills Wore on this trip...am loving it.

  3. I love their visit today. The videos and photos of them feeding the baby elephants and the baby rhino were just too adorable! I love baby elephants and was a little envious! They truly did look so relaxed and completely in their element today. It was reported that they took some alone time (as alone as you can be with guides and such but without the press) to do an extra little tour around.

On the fashion front I did not love these pants. I'm never fond of her in browns and the "armadillo knees" as they appeared to me, were just strange. The blouse, shoes, earrings, hair were all good but I didn't care for the pants. William looked great! Nice to see him in something other than a navy blue suit! They are going to have the most beautiful collection of scarves when they get home!

  4. Jane, I think a photo exhibit for charity is a wonderful idea! And less (potentially) controversial than something more personal (if that makes sense).

  5. They look more like armadillo pants to me! :)

  6. I liked Kate's look today. Nice and relaxed. I've always liked these jeans but never thought we would see them on Kate. She's certainly branched out on this tour.

  7. I liked this outfit a lot and thought the trousers were interesting and a nice departure from her usual skinnies. I think she looked amazing in them. I would have liked a wonderfully tailored classic white button down better. The ruffled nondescript patterned shirt is, well, rather nondescript . All in all though, a win for me.

    1. Faith, when I saw the pants, I thought, good, no chance of anyone thinking she is wearing her familiar navy skinny jeans. ;) And I do agree about a nice crisp tailored shirt. (Should Mother Nature decide that it's Spring, I hope to enjoy my own this season...fingers crossed!)

    2. No kidding! Still winter coat weather here in the Northeast. I've mine ready and waiting :)

  8. For their fifth wedding anniversary I want to see them release family portraits. But I think that's wishful thinking!!

  9. The pants are such a departure from the beautiful clothes we've seen this far. Just not a fan. Not a fan of how tight they are and low rise...yuck. I am not tall and skinny, like Kate, but short and thin. I love my skinny jeans and wear them almost daily but these are TIGHT. Too tight. The armadillo reference above is funny. Other than these pants, so far so good!

  10. I must admit that my first reaction to the pictures today were...."What was Kate thinking?" I don't like the pangolian pants at all. I think her choice of an outfit for touring the park could have been so much more. Also, I'm wondering why she would have wanted to change into a dress to feed baby elephants and rhinos?

    1. Kate changed into a dress to meet the villagers after the safari. Probably to be respectful of them. They fed the baby animals and painted the elephant statues after meeting the villagers.

    2. It was the opening of a special event and the villagers were in their very best, festive clothing. I think Kate was trying to be very respectful to them. Their staff work with local authorities to plan every detail so I'm sure the dress was what was determined to be the best. I have to say that last night and today those red and white traditional dress outfits the locals wore were absolutely stunning!

  11. Looks like a fun morning. I think her trousers, aka pangolin pants :), are just too tight and inappropriate on tour.

    1. Jay, I respectfully disagree about the pants being inappropriate.

From the moment W&K arrived at the hotel on day one, Kate's wardrobe choices have been thoughtful, respectful, and appropriate. She has been more than considerate of her hosts, and I honestly don't see anything wrong with her wearing this outfit for the safari portion of their day.

Over the years, the Queen has hosted her fair share of dignitaries from around the world, many of whom arrive in and continue to wear their national dress throughout their stay. Kate has honored her hosts every step of the way. For her to wear ONE outfit that reflects her own culture is not, IMO, disrespectful. Nods, respect, and understanding should flow both ways.

      My two cents... :))

    2. Skinny jeans.....yuck! And these look a size too small. Some tailored khakis would look great. Since I'm not a fan of ruffles past childhood, the blouse isn't my fav, but I did love the close-up photos of the print. The best part was seeing their interactions and her lovely smile. I hope someone suggests to William that balding men must wear a hat in the sun!

    3. Completely agree royalfan. The pants were an appropriate choice for a safari and simply reflect the current style.

    4. Maybe William sprayed his head with sunscreen. I hope so, anyway!

I agree, royalfan, the respect needs to go both ways. I just didn't like these pants because I didn't like them. Personal taste. She's been brilliant on this tour and, by all accounts, the people are loving them both!

    5. royalfan, I totally agree that Kate's wardrobe choices have been excellent on this tour. I think it would be perfectly fine for her to wear trousers. I was actually hoping she would, perhaps with a tunic. I found the trousers inappropriate because I thought they were too tight on her.

  12. I agree that this mini safari must have brought back fond memories of William's marriage proposal to Catherine--butterflies and all.

  13. My interpretation is that she has gained weight unexpectedly since the pants were purchased
and had not tried them on since. She may have been pressed for time with the early hour
and no time to change. When she got a chance (the off-camera time Robin mentioned?)
she changed into the dress.Otherwise, I agree with Laura-why change into a dress to feed baby elephants-a messy actvity. .I really don't think the plan was for her to wear pants that tight. Especially as careful as she has been not to offend on this tour.

    2. Oh, yes! Beautiful people and gorgeous scenery.
I just hope Kate "fans" won't get restless and start clamoring for engagements a week after they get back, as they did in May, 2014. The children may be extra clingy and needy, too.
Sorry for the negativity. I've been reading another Kate fan blog that tends to make
me feel protective of these lovely young people who are truly representing their
country and family with grace, humor, and compassion. Both now and before the tour.

I imagine they will have many stories and photos to share with family and friends
that the public won't see. Kate will have some wonderful pictures. I would go with
the charity exhibit, except why would she after the ridicule from her 2014 photos.

    3. That's why this is the only Kate blog I read. For the most part, people here are more civilized.

    4. Ladies, their fans won't begrudge them a well deserved rest and some quality time with the little ones. Ohhh, to be a fly on the wall when they are greeted by George and Charlotte. Can't you just picture the excitement!?

And 8:47, I appreciate your comment about feeling protective. And I think you are on the money with the reference to grace, humor, and compassion. Absolutely!

  15. I love this shirt!!! Although I could be a bit biased as I'm an Aussie ;) Not sure about the pants. I'm going to have to think about those some more. I agree that they are very well fitted but am undecided if these are any tighter than any of the other skinny legged pants she has worn in the past....

    1. I agree. Loved the shirt and more so when I found it was an RM. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi, Oi, Oi!

  16. The Only saving grace re the armadillo pants is that they aren't the blue skinny jeans. I agree a nice pair of khakis and white shirt would have been classy..I do not understand Kate's obsession with pants that fit tighter than most leggings; the look has been inappropriate on more than one occasion. They both looked happy and the baby animals adorable...wonderful to call attention to the issue of conservation and to the lovely people of India.

  17. IMO the Duchess of Cambridge makes a simple and plain skinny jeans and shirt look covetable due to her trim figure.
The pictures of William and Kate on the jeep look epic and are my favourite of the two by far.

  18. Sorry, I think jeggings-style pants were inappropriate. I understand royalfan’s point about cultural and even agreed with it on a post to another article. But there are other ways to represent British culture on a royal tour besides wearing skin-tight jeggings, Maybe Kate did gain weight or her weight moved around as can happen. Or maybe this pair shrunk in the wash. But I don’t really think so. How loose can jeggings be after all? These seem to fit exactly like other blue pairs we’ve seen her wear in casual situations in the UK. Personally I’m not a fan of decorative zippers either. I think khakis or brown *slim cut* but not skin-tight jeans would have been better. Or if she really wanted to wear jeggings for some reason, wearing a pair with a tunic top or a longer belted shirt would have been better. There has been so much attention paid to “respect” for the conservative Indian culture I just don’t get why this happened. Not a huge mistake by any means, but a mistake nonetheless IMO.

  19. The style of the pants are to be tight fitting.. I don't believe that this there is anything to complain about and at least it wasn't the blue ones!!!
