What Should Kate Wear to a Garden Party? And More...

Tuesday, May 10, 2016

Fans will be delighted to learn that we don't have long to wait to see the Duchess of Cambridge again. Kate has added several public engagements to her calendar for this month and more are expected!

On the 16th, William, Harry, and Kate will be at Olympic Park in London to officially launch the Heads Together mental health awareness campaign. This is the initiative the trio announced in a video shortly after the Cambridges' return from India.

I know this event is the source of much excitement for those who love to see all three young royals together! Harry is making headlines in Orlando right now with his Invictus Games, but by the 16th he'll be back and putting a smile on William's and Kate's faces. Olympic Park has been the venue for several of Kate's engagements in the past. You doubtless recall her surprise visit ahead of the Olympics when the duchess met Britain's field hockey team and even took to the turf herself!

On May 20th, Kate has a just-announced engagement on behalf of The 1851 Trust of which she is patron. Ben Ainslie's charity encourages young people to get involved in sailing, a sport Kate is very passionate about. Kate has made a number of appearances for the organization, but the last few were in bad weather. I am hoping for the same sunshine we saw on her first engagement for the America's Cup launch in 2014:

We are rolling into Garden Party season! It is a safe bet that our favorite princess will attend at least one. Kate has recycled for two of the three garden parties she has attended, and I expect her to do so again. What do you want Kate to recycle to mingle on the lawn of Buckingham Palace? I know it might be a little soon, but I'd love to see the creamy Wickstead or the teal Temperley from the tour:

Digging a little further into the archives, and to another tour, the Aster Flower dress by Temperley or the gorgeous Sabitri from Beulah would also be big wins in my book:

Finally, the yellow Roksanda Ilincic from Sydney or either of the Erdem dresses from her 2011 tour of Canada are all ripe for recycles and would fit into her Garden Party style, if we can say she has established one after only a few events:

So, Kate, if you'd be so good, these are my faves!  I would love if she recycled the grey disc hat by Rachel Trevor-Morgan from the Order of the Garter. That would look so good with the cream Wickstead. Speaking of Canada, there has been a lot of talk about two possible upcoming trips for the Cambridges. As I mentioned on Twitter a week or so ago, Robert Jobson said the Cambridges might be heading to Canada this fall.  The couple have never undertaken two full tours in one year and it is a little hard to imagine them starting such a habit this year with a new little girl, but anything is possible. They did make that weekend trip to New York City in 2014, and perhaps they are planning a similar scheme to touch base in Canada? That would be fantastic! It does seem that they are increasing their workload post-India, so keep your eyes peeled for more news on the northern front.

There has also been discussion about a trip to Brazil. The Daily Star, not exactly the most reputable of sources, says that Kate might cancel an alleged trip to Rio for the Summer Olympics due to the fear of the Zika virus.

Phil Dampier

The Rio Olympics are taking place in August of 2016. I would be amazed if the Cambridges went to Rio and visited Canada. They are already due to head to France this summer for Battle of the Somme commemorations (Yes, I can't wait!) and will be busy with the Heads Together project. It's a lot of travel. This might be a whole new world and perhaps they are about to become the jet-setting royals, but I rather doubt it. If I had to guess, I'd say no to Rio and yes to Canada. On verra. More proximately, we will likely see Kate this week at one of the events marking the Queen's 90th birthday!

Until then!

  1. Out of curiosity, what is the average time span between her first debut of a piece and its 'recycle'?

    1. Ooo, that's tough. It can really vary. It isn't unheard of for her to recycle within a year. Generally I'd say a year, or maybe put better only once a season. So, for example, the Amoret gown she wore it in January or February and again in November of the same year--different winters, but same calendar year. But she has also recycled within a month. I'd also distinguish between public and private recycles and frequency.

  2. I would love her to research the grey Mcqueen she wore to the Easter service in Australia. Perfect for a garden party.

Shortly after the "lazy" Cambridges articles appeared, a couple of Royal reporters said that KP had mentioned 3 overseas trips later in the year.

France (though it's only 2 days) was already known about, and the assumption was that Olympics was one contender as was a Canada trip (being talked about by Canadian monarchy groups). So I think it was a real option, but less so now because of Zika. And if future children are a concern, then neither William or Harry should go.

But it's a difficult decision for athletes as well. A possible once in a life time opportunity to take part in the Olympics, something they have worked hard to achieve versus future risks. Difficult call.

  3. Canada is celebrating its 150th birthday in 2017. I would guess that the announcement will relate to the Cambridges visiting us in Canada as part of the 150th birthday celebrations.

    1. Yes, someone suggested that to me last week. I think the trip could be to mark the 150th, but the date that is rumored has been this fall. Maybe in anticipation? I don't know. It is all, obviously, ambiguous.

    2. 12:11, in that case, a tour in 2017 would make more sense.

Jane, perhaps they will *announce* the tour later this year...?

    3. IMO Charles and Camilla will visit Canada in 2017 for the 150 year celebration.

  4. All the dress choices are gorgeous and some of my favorites. I do think she may go for a sheath, due to wind concerns. The yellow Roksanda reminds me of the yellow outfit she
wore to a garden party when pregnant with George that looked lovely on her, tummy and all. Maybe the same hat would work?

This was a treat, Jane. Did not expect another post so soon.

  5. Just checked Kate's Clothes. The yellow dress was with the white angled hat, which seems a
    bit busy for the Roksanda.
Now I want her to wear something pink so I can see the lace Jane Corbett again.

    Great post and great choices!
As I wrote on another blog, I see the possibility of another mini tour very likely.
William and Catherine are growing within the Family, so their workload will grow as well.
I see both trips highly posible:
Rio because the Family can take turns on supporting the British Team and also I think Zara is competing
With Canada I had the same thougt that as with NYC, they can perfectly do a 3-day tour to the north

But, like I sais in another blog, if reports that Catherine wants three children are true, then she might be pregnant during this time so who knows?
    Time will tell! :)
    What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  7. If they are planning to have more children, I don't believe they'd risk a Brazil trip, given the Zika virus.

    ReplyDelete
  8. The Zika virus is already spreading to North America - though not in Canada that I know of - so... (cf. BBC). It's a terrible epidemic. I'm about to go to Puerto Rico (it's there) and to Brazil later in the year. DEET don't fail us now.

I'm happy to never see the creamy Wickstead with those bizzare pockets ever again. But otherwise, yay! Great question, re: recycling from Staci:)

  9. Thr Temperley flower dress is my absolute favourite of everything she has ever worn. I have wondered if she won't wear it again because she wore it the day the paparazzi photos of her sunbathing in France were published.I have a couple of outfits I can't wear again because of unhappy associations. Maybe Kate is the same.

Oh, I hope we see it again. Create some happier memories for it.
I think that time held some of Kate's best and worst moments, anon 3pm.
What bravery! And what a comeback.
Maybe you could create some happier memories for your outfits, too.

  11. Jane, you are spoiling us with another post so soon! I have to say that the yellow Roksanda is one of my favorite dresses on Kate. I think it would look great at a garden party with a new, but simple, wide brimmed hat.

The De Gournay Chinoiserie Dress would also be lovely with the silver Jane Taylor hat.

Last, but not least, is the “Lasa” Poppy Sheath. I love that dress and would be fun with the white hat from Charlotte's Christening.

I have to say that I hope the white Wickstead is relegated to the back of the closet.

The Zika virus is a real concern and it's already hitting the southern U.S. so I really hope the duke and duchess don't go to Brazil. My daughter is in south Texas and 7 months pregnant. She has been taking extreme caution. I'm concerned for all of the female athletes this summer. I think a trip to Canada would be fun and it's not so horribly far away that it couldn't just be three or four days. That combined with the trip to France to commemorate the Battle of the Somme would be quite a bit of travel for our favorite young family.

    1. I also like the yellow Roksanda dress. It's so bright and happy and seems perfect for a garden party!

I suspect that if she is planning a third baby that a trip to Rio would be put for both the Duke and Duchess. I also think it would be a security nightmare right now. The country is not very stable politically and the mood is volatile. I have some friends living there and they indicated that it's not very safe. Crime is escalating and it's always been crime ridden. There is alot of anger from the masses about some of the ways this has all evolved in the loss of entire neighborhoods. Slums yes. But if that is your home and your family home for generations that is a hard pill to swallow. Restitution was meager. Throw in the Zika issues and WOW I would say PASS. They were much involved in 2012 but that is mainly because it was in England. They love sports and want to support the Commonwealth countries but not sure it's wise to go at this time.

South Texas RobinfromCA? I lived in Corpus Christi for 26 yrs. I still have one of my 3 children living there. I do miss walking out my door and feeling sand under my toes. LOL

    2. Ladies, I have a feeling they will pass on Rio; too many serious issues involved at this time.

Robin, I see the potential in the white Wickstead...imagine red accessories on a nice sunny day. If not for a garden party, perhaps for the Canadian tour. Or black and white for a classic look.

But I'd definitely like to see the teal Temperley, the Aster Flower dress, or the Sabitri from Beulah again at some point. All very feminine and beautiful.

      Delete
    3. I can't imagine them in Rio either, royalfan.

      Delete
    4. royalfan, It's just those pockets on the white Wickstead. I agree, however, that a white dress can be accessorized so many different ways with shoes, belts, and a clutch. The Aster Flower dress would look lovely for a garden party with an ice blue hat. The Sabitri, with its long sleeves, looks too warm to stand out in the sun and I think it's too soon to see the teal Temperley. I would like to see them both recycled at some point though! I also don't think they'll go to Rio.

Diane, no sand at my daughter's house. They're in San Antonio and they do love it there. They keep trying to get us to move down there too. I'm just such a wimp in the heat!

      Delete
    7. Robin, I understand; the pockets would not be my first choice :) but I would love to see the dress taken in a fun, "retro" direction with a red belt, shoes, and clutch. And if anyone can pull it off, it's Kate.

    8. Diane, some of my in-laws are in the northeast and it is quite different there for this westerner as well. Breathtakingly beautiful in the autumn but horrid in the winter. Last time we were there (about 18 mos. ago) we couldn't even leave the house. The daytime temp was -2, not counting windchill! Brrr... This CA girl's winter clothes were not adequate. I had to wear a base layer under all my clothes!

Oh, royalfan, a retro direction would be so cute on that dress! Maybe a red belt with polkadots, red shoes and clutch! I was looking at some vintage Vogue ads on Pinterest from 1951 and saw a suit that had the same cutout Kate's red McQueen from the Thames Pageant had. Retro Kate - I'm on board with that!

    9. Robin, the red McQueen is one of my favorites. I love the style and cut, and Kate looks stunning in it.

However I don't expect them to visit Canada this year.Maybe next year.It would be a lot of travel.
Hmm...garden party styles.I would personally like to see her wear her Prabal Gurung dress(i adore that dress) with a black net hat or her Suzannah Budding Hearts dress.

    1. I forgot about the Suzannah, Candice. I love that dress! What hat? Maybe too casual for

Black net with the Gurung-yes. For early evening, cocktailish?
But I can definitely see Kate amidst the garden partiers in either one.

      Delete
    2. The Suzannah would definitely look great with a hat for the garden party. Maybe the white “Marisabel” hat - except placed on her head a little better than the last wearing.

The Prabal Gurung dress is beautiful but, for some reason, doesn't say "garden party" to me. It is deserving of a recycle though!

  14. Jane, I am so happy to see the two Canada Erdems and the grey disk hat mentioned here. I love all of those pieces and I actually often wonder why Kate hasn't recycled some lovely pieces from her first months in public life, such as the Erdems, the Katherine Hooker coat and grey hat from the Order of the lovely blue hat she wore to Prince Phillip's 90th birthday service (http://www.katesclothes.com/hat/blue-disc-hat/).

While I was not in love with the yellow roksanda, I would be over the moon if she repeated the lace temperley from south-east asia! It remains one of my favourite dresses she has ever worn, so feminine and elegant while still cute and youthful. I'd also love to see her in a pop of colour for the garden party - maybe the peach coat she wore on her wedding anniversary while pregnant with george (but with another dress of course - unless Kate has a sweet secret ;))
I'd be happy if she recycled the fleur ruffle beret from belgium - so spring-y!

I had really hoped for Brazil, but I am almost sure they won't go now because of zika. The scientists still don't know very much about this virus so it would be a big risk.
I think that 2 long tours in 1 year would be too much - maybe another short trip in the fall and at that time (fall 2016), they will also announce a canada tour for next spring (2017)?
    That's just my guess :)

  19. As for myself, should Kate attend a garden party this year, not a given, of the day dresses Jane Barr presented, I would prefer either the teal Temperly Kate wore to meet the PM of India or the yellow/white Ilincic, worn Down Under. BUT, I would like either to be worn with a real hat as opposed to another dingbat fascinator--so Charles had better be ready to pay up! Think Kate should ditch the clutch in favour of an umbrella, also selected to match the dress, c/o Charles, of course. (And speaking of fiscal responsibilities, isn't it about time, if she doesn't do so already, for the Queen to pay for replacement footwear in the case of rain? Talking only of the members of her family whom she invites/orders to attend;other guests can decide whether they want to attend, or whether to stay home--they still possess free will and are not beholden to HMTQ.)

It's very stressful. I never really unpacked so not so bad.

    6. Yes, Royalfan, Robin and Diane, that was me on May 12 at 8:18 PM--I simply forgot to sign off. My apologies.

My idea of a great hat would be one with a large, slightly floppy brim, something to soften the rather severe cut of both dresses, in particular, the R. Ilincic yellow/white. Expensive, simple, elegant. As for footwear, think she should use the most inexpensive heels she has (LK Bennett, here we come!). A garden party, even without rain, no doubt compromises shoes with delicate heels--and I certainly don't think Kate should tramp around on turf in block heels, aka the Queen, who, after all is 90, and should probably not be working at all.

Of course, the best accessory Kate could take would be her husband--fat chance!--all decked out in a new morning suit, which he desperately needs--the old and only one he possesses has seen better days.

      JC

      Delete
    7. I thought it was you, JC. :) No argument from me when it comes to large hats, but I would be surprised to see one at a garden party; Kate tends to be very conservative on these occasions. I have seen nice fascinators, but I am NOT a fan of the rigid, saucer type because it tends to be a harsher look. (If that makes sense!)

Diane, good luck with your move. I hope the vino was one of the last things you packed. :))

    9. I so agree, JC, that Kate's best accessory is her husband! But the wide brim hat is what I would love to see too with the more sleek line dresses. Definitely not shoes that would get ruined by muddy, rain soaked turf. Maybe she could just borrow something ugly from one of the York girls. Their shoes should be ruined.

Good luck with the move Diane! Definitely the right thing to do with all the critters invading your space!

Diane, I, too, have had critter troubles--mice in my basement, birds nests in my fireplace, squirrels in my garage, and rabbits digging up my lawn, after helping themselves to my veggie garden. They're beautiful dresses, but I will always associate them with the horrible topless photo fiasco that Kate learned of the day these dresses were debuted. If she ever recycles them, it's just going to remind me of the heartbreaking photos of her putting on a brave face for the East Asia tour.

That being said, I almost wish she WOULD recycle them. She has every right to, and maybe it would be the final nail in the coffin of that awful event. I'd be interested to hear what everyone thinks about this.

At times, an acceptable comment just goes missing. If you felt your comment should have been approved, but did not show up within five hours, again, pop an email to the above address.

Happy chatting!
