[Updated] Carole and Mike Middleton at Wimbledon

Thursday, June 30, 2016

On Monday we saw Pippa and James Middleton enjoy a match on Centre Court at Wimbledon. The relatives of royals added a special sparkle to the Grand Slam's opening day. As we had hoped, Princess Kate's parents were long in making an appearance. The handsome couple were in the royal box today!

Carole chose to wear a blue printed dot dress and smart blazer in a complementing blue. She paired the dress and jacket with nude patent pumps and a nude croc bag. Mike and Carole were seated in the royal box, just one row behind the Duchess of Cornwall and her sister. They weren't the only celebrities, either, Allen Leech, who played Tom on hit tv series Downton Abbey, was seated a row behind the Middletons.

We haven't seen much of the Middletons recently. The last time they were in the news they were the subject of gossip concerning Prince George's relationship with his royal grandfather the Prince of Wales--or lack thereof. Although I suspect that much of that talk was unwarranted, I do believe it irritated Charles, whose press office likely felt bound to respond in some measure. No one wants a war between the grandparents, even if it is just in the mind of the public. I can't help but wonder if these two decided to go underground for a while to avoid more chatter. Hopefully, the dry spell is over and we will see more of the two!

Doesn't Carole look so lovely here? I think Kate's resemblance to her is very strong in this photo:

William and Kate are currently in France at the Somme 100 vigil. That post later this evening!

  1. I am so happy to see the Middletons at Wimbledon! Carole's fashion sense is impeccable - I love it! I suspect you're right about them going underground for a little while to keep themselves out of the news and away from whatever Charles's issues may be regarding the publicity surrounding their relationship with the grandkids. As we know from his marriage to Diana, Charles can be jealous of attention being diverted away from him. The Middletons are classy enough to know when to step back. I do hope that they will be back out and about now that all of the grandparent photo ops surrounding HM birthday have been completed.

  2. This is actually the dress Carole wore to George's first birthday!

Anyone else wondering if they'll ever get a title? Rumors seem to have quieted down but I still wonder if they'll be rewarded for their support and being grandparents to a future King.

It's sad if public perception dictates the kind of relationship the grandchildren can have with Mike and Carole, but I also suspect that it's a lot of in home visits. I believe the Middleton's do have a closer relationship and see their grandchildren more frequently. I think Carole see's them more than Mike (it seems we see Carole out and about a lot more, so it's my guess Mike is the quiet force who quite often stays in Bucklebury to manage the business), but they also have a business to run and have to balance their family. As entrepreneurs though, they have more flexibility with seeing their children/grandchildren if they have trusted staff. Whereas Charles has more pressure to work, and work publicly, which gives him less flexibility, I'd think. Either way, the Middleton's, which is where Kate must have got it from, have shown time and time again they will smile and do what they have to when they have to.

    1. I don't think the public's perception has changed their relationship with the grandkids but that they are being more private with the visits. Charles has never proven to be very easy with babies and small children so I don't think we'll see him frolicking on the beach or at a playground with one of them any time soon.

    2. Robin yes I've made that assessment of Charles. I agree with the Middleton's visits being private, but that is still sad to me. They should be able to take the kids out and do normal things and not be restricted to the privacy or homes and yards. Especially now that George is getting to the age where he'll retain some memories I hope they can be normal and fun with his grandparents :-)

    3. I know what you mean A/Anonymous  But sometimes I think we view the "restrictions" on George and Charlotte's lives through our adult eyes not through a child's eyes. Although none lived with us, my maternal and paternal grandparents were around a fair amount when I was young. Maybe they took me exciting places but I have no memory of that happening. Instead my early (and very happy) memories of my grandparents from about 3 to 5 yrs old involve things like one grandmother pushing me on a swing in my backyard, another grandmother giving me homemade tomato soup at her  kitchen table before we made cookies together, being allowed to stand on a chair to look out a window to watch the squirrels in the tree-filled courtyard of my grandparents 3rd flr apt, playing a game with one grandfather, singing a song with my other grandfather. So at least for me, location wasn't an issue as all of my memories involve incidents at my house or at a grandparents house.

    4. I agree with you, A, but M&C have the class and humility that permits them to put Kate's best interest at the top of the list. I believe that they, and Kate, have done their very best to avoid any reminders of "issues from the past."

    5. Really sweet memories, lizzie. I can tell you they are sweet memories for grandmas, too. Those are activities that are suitable for
      such a young child.
The day will come when their world will need to expand-to prepare them for
school classroom and playground experiences. Perhaps that is what Catherine and Carole had in mind when they took George to playgrounds, petting zoos, parks, and museums, the beach.
Hopefully, there will be a chance for Charlotte to enjoy those times, too. George
always looked like he was having a great time.

    6. Lizzie @9:39, your comment made me think back and smile at the little things and the simple memories that mean so very much to me.

And perhaps some folks will think I am nuts, but whenever I "need" my grandmother's presence, as if by magic, the numbers that make up her date of birth (day/month/year) appear before me, repeatedly!! License plates, receipts, OMG...

    7. Lizzie good points :-) I guess memories can be different - I have good memories of my grandparents at homes or in yards, but I also recall being taken to a zoo, being taken for lunch, etc. So my young memories of 3-5 years old includes homes and public places, which is why for me that would be something I think of regarding George and Charlotte.

    8. I don't think that is weird royalfan. The simplest events can create enduring memories and the simplest things can bring those memories to mind when we need or want them. Kind of cool how that works especially when the memories are happy. And A/Anonymous I agree memories can be built in many locations. But for kids under 3, home or grandparents hous may not be that restrictive esp when there's lots of play area and a pool.

    9. Very true, Lizzie. In my case, the happiest moments took place in her kitchen. :)

  3. Carole always looks so chic! Any idea on an ID for her bracelet? So pretty and delicate!

    1. Carole's bracelet looks to me like it could be one of Kiki McDonough's Eternal or Eternal Small bracelets. Given her daughter's love for the designer it is entirely possible. Maybe even a gift from Kate.

  5. I suspect they see quite a bit of their grandchildren. Its just not so public anymore (and the frequency of earlier public appearances was unusual. ..I'm not criticizing but noting it was unusual within the BRF) They probably took care of the children with the nanny's help during the India tour. It was reported Kate and the children spent Easter with them while Will was in Africa. They were at AH for Kate's birthday in January as we saw them at church. There have been times when neither Will nor Kate has been seen publicly for 1-2 weeks so visiting likely occurs during those times. And several reports claimed Carole went on the ski holiday. So I don't think they've been closed out in reality...I agree it's just more behind the scenes.

    1. I agree entirely, lizzie. I think the frequency of their visits when George was born was due to Kate being a new mom and wanting her mother around more. Completely normal.

    2. And given what we have all learned since about how George wasn't a big sleeper probably a huge help!

  6. I love Carole's dress; she is a very elegant and classy lady. And I tend to agree that Mike and Carole made a conscious decision to keep a lower profile. They are well aware of the buttons to avoid pushing. Sad, but it's reality.

  9. I wonder if they have ever said no this is too much... Too much attention, money to spend, invasion of our privacy etc.. I understand that they have money but there's having money and affording as much as they do which is quite a lot of money!!!!! I have wondered if Charles gives them a clothing allowance etc???
