Kate & The Queen at Balmoral

Saturday, September 10, 2016

The Cambridges autumn trip to Balmoral is a yearly half-surprise, the weekend changes around a bit, but we are always sure to see them at some point. The trip finishes off the summer holiday for the royals, but to me, it signals the start of fall. With the autumnal colors, chilly Scottish weather, tartans and plaids, their trip always puts me in the mood for the cozy months to come. As we anticipated, the Cambridges are at Balmoral this weekend. The Daily Mail has scooped the story here:

The Mail reports that William, Kate, George, and Charlotte arrived Thursday and are staying at Birkhall, which you likely remember is Prince Charles's Balmoral home. Yesterday, William did a spot of grouse hunting, according to the report:
William...was also spotted driving a converted Land Rover Defender up the Capel Mounth path on the way to Glen Clova for a grouse shoot shortly after 10am yesterday.
Around lunch time, Kate and the Queen were snapped heading toward a picnic luncheon with him. The two passed walkers and hikers enjoying the early September weather, which is when this photo was taken. Tomorrow, we hope to see car photos of William and Kate heading to church!

  1. What a fun little surprise! Balmoral is so gorgeous I'm a little bit jealous of their weekend away. Our hot weather seems to have dug in its heels and I despair of ever getting any of those cozy months. Kate looks gorgeous!

    1. Robin, I do sympathize with your "will it ever be Fall?" sentiment. I woke up to 84 degrees F and 92% humidity. It's September ... I want to burn my apple/cinnamon candles without feeling like a nut! Instead, it's still Yankee's Ocean Star. ;)

    2. Looks as if we're all in a bit of a rut with the summer weather. It's foggy here this morning but it's supposed to be 80º again today. Better than the 95º we had last week. Sigh. Waiting to see what Kate wears to church this morning. (Or wore since it's 8 hours ahead of PDT.)

    3. Robin, just thinking of 95F makes me uncomfortable. Been there, done that, hate it. :) But the week ahead looks promising and seasonally appropriate. Fingers crossed.

    4. Lucky you! Our week ahead is "cooling" into the mid-high 70s. Actually, Sept-Oct are usually nicer here than August. We call our Augusts the Bay Area's little joke on tourists. If you want to freeze your hiney off just go to San Francisco in August without a jacket! You spot them everywhere in their little tank tops and shorts, shivering, while they stand in line to purchase grossly overpriced sweatshirts!

I moved to the Arctic two months ago, to the coast of Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada, and will be living here for six months of every year, during the two tourist seasons (beluga whales and polar bears). It's 36 degrees right now, and until the parka I ordered arrives in the mail I'm bundling up in triple hooded sweatshirts. It got as hot as 72 degrees two days this summer, and having heard from folks back home of the insufferable heat wave and drought, I'm glad of the mild temperatures but dreading the -40 months ahead.

    6. I suspect, Allie, that in a couple of months time we will be glad for our milder temps compared to where you are! Yikes! Plenty of thermals and electric blankets I hope!

    7. It's still summer here in French Riviera! Yaeh!! :)

    8. Lol, I think there is this quote saying 'The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco' or something similar to that - my dad always cites this when talking about his and my mom's holiday in California.

For this week we are still expecting 27 degrees (celsius!) here *sigh* but next weekend it is expected to cool down a loooot - let autumn begin with all its scarves, booties and cardigans instead of sundresses ;)

    9. Lol...then I should plan a trip to San Francisco in August. I'm happier in sweatshirt weather. :)

Allie, that is dangerously cold and I assume you will have to take all sorts of precautions to be safe. I give you credit! Be careful.

    10. Sonja, that is the quote exactly! Poor Mark Twain didn't know what he was in for!
Royalfan, if you come I will show you around!
In the meantime, we are going up to the SF Giants game tonight and we will, as ever, dress in layers. Short sleeves for the beginning. Then we move to sweatshirts over them, then a scarf and jacket on top of that, and then a blanket. The ballpark is right on the water and what starts out at 70ºF will become 50º and foggy by the time the game is over!

    11. Oh, Robin, that WOULD be a fun trip. OMG...just imagine!! LOL. For now, stay warm and enjoy the game tonight! :)

  2. I love that her hair has the texture it seems to get when she lets it air dry - suggests that she is getting a true break and feels at home and relaxed with her royal relations 🙂

    1. I agree with you about her hair. It's good to know she is comfortable enough with them to be as relaxed as she would be with her own family.

  3. This *is* a nice surprise! I wasn't expecting any photos until Sunday. :)

  4. What a lovely surprise! Her hair looks just gorgeous, very natural. I wish I had such volume *sigh*

Could she be wearing the scarf from Cheistmas 2014? http://www.katesclothes.com/scarf/autumnal-partridge-silk-scarf/

It looks like it is already pretty chilly in Scotland. I want autumnal weather NOW! Where I live, it is usually rather chilly and autumnal at this time of the year, but we are expecting 27 degrees celsius next week, it wasn't even that warm some weeks in July and August! :0 I want to wear my autumn clothes, scarves and booties so bad... but instead, I'll have to go with sundresses... well, not really a reason to complain, but to me, it feels like autumn has already begun but the weather somehow did not get the memo...

Does the Queen not wear her seatbelt? Kate does and I am glad. Wasn't Diana not wearing hers in Paris? You would think the royals would be more careful...

I hope we will see them at church!

  6. Here is an interesting article from Vanity Fair about the styling of Kate's name and titles. A conversation we've had many times here.

    1. As one of the commenters adhering to the "Google theory" of referring to her as KM, even I was surprised by how big the gap is between "Kate Middleton" and "Duchess of Cambridge" search results.

Also interesting that "lack of respect" wasn't a factor at all and that Kate herself isn't bothered by it. To me it seems like insisting she is referred to by her *correct* title would be inconsistent with the idea that W&K are furthering Diana's vision of a modern and relatable monarchy.

    2. I agree 7:57. Not being bothered by if she is referred to by her "proper" title is very Diana-like. I'm sure those who meet personally with them at official engagements adhere to the protocol but for the media and the general public it's not a big deal to them. Once she's Queen it will be a different story. Then they will be heads of state and that introduces a new level of respect. Can you see HM responding to someone shouting out "Hey, Liz!" from a crowd? It makes one shudder to think of it!

  7. There is another picture of the queen driving carole middleton in her car, it's on the mirror website

    1. Love it! I could almost stand and sing God Save the Queen. :)

If this weekend hasn't represented a MAJOR seal of approval from HM where Kate and her family is concerned, I don't know what would send a clearer message.

    2. I agree, royalfan! The only people who won't see it as such don't want to see it. Kate is at such ease with HM. It speaks volumes!

If the Queen is driving on private property there would be no seatbelt restrictions in place. It is good to see the Queen still in the driver's seat at age 90. Kate does look relaxed; her relationshp with her grandmother-in-law looks like a comfortable one.

  8. I'm guessing there wasn't a walk or drive to church today since none of the "news" outlets have published anything. Insert sad face here.

    1. You might have seen this now, Robin, but this DM article has church-going photos http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3784204/Carole-Middleton-joins-Kate-church-service-near-Balmoral-George-Charlotte-continue-visit-Gan-Gan-s-Scottish-estate.html Carole is in the front but it looks like there is a dark clad arm behind her - possibly Michael. The article says they were both at church. You can also see Sophie Carter in the back.
