Kate & William Host BBC Radio 1 Teen Heroes

Saturday, October 22, 2016

As the royals are sometimes wont to do, they slipped in an extra event last Tuesday before the reception at Buckingham Palace for Team GB. The couple were the surprise special guests at an event for BBC Radio 1's Teen Heroes. The event was held at Kensington Palace.

When I first saw the pictures a day or so after the BP reception, I immediately assumed that the couple had done what they like to do on occasion,
and booked the events back to back. This turned out to be the case, but wouldn't have been amazing had it been a separate event and after all the bad reviews Kate rewore the dress...just to shock the fans?  I would have appreciated the sass.

I thought the dress looked a little better in these photos, and that is partly because we have gotten used to it in the intervening days, and partly because the flower pattern is blurred. We've already agreed there is no saving this dress, but I still love the red shoes and this video of the Duke & Duchess hosting these young people is super fun. Enjoy:

  1. Have we seen this room before or is this a new view into KP?

    1. We have seen it before. It's one of the working parts of the palace.

    2. Is that the same place they did the pop up huffing ton post office?

  2. I think this room is part of the newly refurbished former home of Princess Diana. Please correct me if I am incorrect.

    1. It is part of the State Apartments I believe.

    2. I believe it is part of what used to be Diana's apartment. If I'm not mistaken, the group photo was taken in front of the fireplace in what used to be her sitting room. It looks quite different without the Laura Ashley wallpaper but the architectural structure is the same.

    3. The State Apartments are in a different part of KP.

This does appear to be part of Diana's apartments, but based on photos I've seen over the years (and the size of the windows), I believe that Diana's sitting room was on the second floor. The room featured in this post appears to be the one on the lower left (ground floor) of this photo. (And the view is consistent with the photo I've included below.) I do not recall seeing it (with its small windows) during Diana's lifetime. Does anyone else??

      The entrance to Diana's apartment...

    4. I can't tell from that photo, royalfan, but - upon further review - the fancy pediment over the door in Diana's old sitting room is missing so it's not that room. I do believe, however, that this room is part of what have become the working rooms where her apartment used to be but maybe toward the back. Definitely not part of the State Apartments.

  3. Despite the dress, this really made me smile! They shine when they are together and meeting young people who are trying to make a difference!

  4. I love the video. What a thrill for those kids. Just terrific.

  5. Please Jane, pardon the slight "criticism"/"fact" that I'm going to draw...Is it me or the way she speaks is harder and harder to understand? She doesn't articulate her words at all as if she doesn't use her lips and open her mouth enough... I perfectly understand all the royals when they speak but her! I draw the attention of my husband on that, as we are both quite fluent and lived in the US and UK , and he feels the same... What is it all about? Could you help me understand? Kindest regards and thanks for the trully enjoyable posts Jane.

    1. I don't have a problem understanding her and in this video she is particularly clear. One of the reporters noted that she is soft spoken, so in a crowd there are fewer quotes coming from her. Not because she is not saying anything, but because they cannot always hear her.

    2. I also have no problems understanding Kate. When she is nervous she seems to speak a little fast and pressured which can make it hard at times. But I am used to the accents as I have several friends with such accents. I agree with Anon 3.11 in that Kate has a very soft voice and again when she is nervous she seems garble her words. In the clip above I thought she was very easy to understand.

    3. Kate does have a soft voice but I, too, had no difficulty understand her.

    4. She speaks beautifully, but does have a very soft voice. Obviously people in the crowds who speak to her, understand what she says, or we would not have the frequent quotes.

    5. I often have trouble understanding what Kate says in videos - especially in this one.

    6. I could understand her perfectly well.

  6. What a sweet video! I love how "normal" the kids look, and that they had no idea about their special guests. The vibe in the room seemed so relaxed and positive. I imagine these moments are quite special and enjoyable for the Duke and Duchess. Somehow, I don't even mind Kate's dress. This event seemed more relaxed and hip, so her dress didn't seem to stand out so much.

    1. Don 't think they had no idea. They all waited in a room of Kensington Palace. So e.g. they could be pretty sure it won t be the Queen showing up but "someone" living there. I am ptetty sure they cut the video this way only to make it more fun to watch. Starchild

    2. I wouldn't be so sure that people know who lives where. Unless a royal watcher, I think a lot of British people wouldn't know or have thought about where any particular royal lives.

    3. It could have been any of the royals with a residence in KP. Besides William & Kate, there is Prince Harry, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, the Duke and Duchess of Kent, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. All of whom carry out duties for HMTQ. It must have been quite the treat to see W&K come in!

  8. Gorgeous! I used to listen the radio 1 all the time - it was and still is the "cool" radio station of the BBC.
I think she has a lovely speaking voice but maybe if your first language is not English it is harder to follow as she is softly spoken.
I thought the kids were totally won over and it brings "Royalty" to that generation and makes them relevant.
I forgive The Dress after this!

    1. I could not agree more, Simone. The Cambridges really have the edge with the younger generation. The dress is a bit on the odd side, oh well....

  9. This is odd to me and odd no one else has mentioned it.. Two engagements and same everything? Jane, isn't this a rare occurrence? I realize it was all same evening but still she usually changes something?? Right?

Also not disliking the dress as much.. I really think the carpet being nearly the same red had a whole lot to do with it..It looks much better with these colors of the mystery room.. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, except for it being a surprise, being in a different part of KP?? Thoughts anyone??
