Kate Wears red Preen at Private Royal Foundation Fundraiser

Thursday, December 8, 2016

Good morning all! Yesterday a very fun Instagram post surfaced that showed Prince Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge at a private fundraiser for the Royal Foundation.
@navi_ananth Instagram

In this photoset, Kate and Harry are hugging and congratulating Sai Kadirrajah, a Young Minds activists. Young Minds is a charity promoting mental health awareness for young people. Young Minds is one of a number of partner charities working under the
umbrella of William, Kate, and Harry's Heads Together Initiative. You may recall in August of this year that William and Kate made an unannounced visit to YoungMinds helpline center.

On that occasion, the couple toured the facility and learned about the aid that the helpline provides, in addition to listening in on some of the calls.

Ms. Kadirrajah, the young woman hugging Kate at the fundraiser, has written a guest blog for YoungMinds and serves as a youth ambassador. By the Instagram account, she was the only young person at the event and gave a moving address. Her mother? commented on the evening:
She was the only young person and the #royals were so moved by courage and determination that they even hugged and kissed her!! Kate even suggested she should be a public speaker!! Our family couldn’t be prouder!!!
As you can see from the Instagram post, Kate recycled her red Preen for this fundraiser.

The Duchess first wore the Preen dress at a cocktail reception in Canada in September and has since worn the same Finella in black to Place2Be's Wellness Awards last month.

I didn't love it as much in black, but even from the limited exposure at this Royal Foundation fundraiser, this red still looks as gorgeous as ever. It looks like Kate did not wear a belt with it, either, which makes me happy. Kate accessories in black on this new wear and appears to be carrying her Mullberry Bayswater clutch. I don't think I have seen these earrings before, unless they are the large ones she wore on the night of her 26th birthday when out clubbing at Kitts Nightclub with Pippa and Carole:

Any thoughts on the earrings, crew?

  1. I was wondering about the earrings too - I forgot about the ones you mention Jane so my mind was going to the amathyst kikis she debuted in Bhutan because of the shape, but I'm not sure she would have worn them with a red dress. Maybe they are new earrings?

  2. Hey Jane, Kate had two engagements for the Royal Foundation yesterday, 7 December. One was a reception at BP with William and Harry, and the other was a board meeting with William. Is it possible that the photos above are from yesterday?

    1. I dont think its BP. Looking at the wood panelling and environment I would say KP Royal Apartments. there was an event on 14 November

    2. The Court Circular for nov 14 listed the location for the royal foundation dinner as One Belgravia , 9 Grosvenor Place London (likely a Duke of Westminster owned location)

    Thanks for this fun post!

I agree on the earrings - the ones from her birthday years ago are what I initially thought as well.

Still love this dress in red, and glad we got pictures!

  5. Love the photos Jane. What a nice surprise. Love the red Preen, and Kate looks beautiful.

  6. Goo morning to you as well, Jane:-) :-) Does that mean it's a cheat day and I get to have something gooey?:-) I pick warm brownies right out of the oven.

Thanks for publishing the photos. I had heard about them but couldn't find
them. I like her hair. It looks thicker and straighter than usual to me. Can't tell about the earrings. If they are the pair from her birthday, I think that's a fun pairing with the Preen.

  7. Yeah, I thought of those earrings when I saw the photos yeasterday, but I feel like she wouldn't wear costume jewelry to an event like that. Maybe she will wear them again soon and we'll know for sure :)

  8. What a fun surprise! I love the candid nature of these photos and the fact that Kate and Harry are breaking the unspoken "hugging rule" for royals. They look genuinely proud of this young lady and that speaks volumes! Kate looks gorgeous, of course, and I think you're right about the earrings. They look very much the same shape and size of the "birthday" earrings. Recycling!

  10. Thanks, Tilda, for the heads up.--I keep an unofficial track of all of Kate's appearances, which almost always differs from the Court Circular, but then, I include everything which has to do with charities or the trios Foundation, including those designated private; why not? It particularly peeves me that the Queen often only officially counts herself and her spouse at some events when it is clearly obvious that Kate, and several other family members are also present. Of course, she could blame her second-rate press gang for failing to give proper recognition in said Circular, but a fair woman would've corrected this misdemeanour years ago. And, by the way, for anyone interested, I now put Kate's present count for the year at 130, plus two known this month, so far--probably that should read three, if the Queens Luncheon were to be counted. Can you tell that I am weary of the institutional lying which goes on within both the Queens Court and that of Charles?

For those interested, the most reliable on-line count of Kate's engagements I have discovered can be found at duchesskatetracker.blogspot.ca

Regarding this latest *private* appearance, photographed by ???, I would like to first, reinforce my opinion; if this were Charles and Camilla or the Queen and her spouse, it wouldn't be classified as *private*, it would've been counted, officially. The hypocrisy kills me.

And, secondly, where the heck was William? Clearly, Kate was there, as was Harry. William, tho....

Lastly, I just adore this red Preen dress on Kate--so much better, somehow, than the matching black with the distressing belt. My idea on how to improve the black would be to remove the belt and to wear two smallish C brooches, in white. diamente, set in white gold, which could eventually be shared and later passed on to Charlotte.

Have no knowledge of these earrings--sorry, Jane. Not crazy about them, but don't dislike them--Kate has worn worse.

All in all, this was a good look for Kate--two thumbs up. Too bad her main accessory--William--went AWOL.

    1. It's rare to find William and Kate both at an evening function unless it's required which, at a private event, it wouldn't be. It seems especially important given that they are both out at the diplomatic reception this evening. They seem to make sure that one of them is always available at bedtime for the kids. I remember that Diana was very strict about that as well if she wasn't required at an event. Maybe that part of his childhood was very important to William and he and Kate have adopted the same practice.

    2. You do realize that even though the November 14 event (which the photos are from) and several other events that are "private", as in no press attended, are actually counted in the Court Circular, right? That's how we find out about these "private" events: they show up in the Court Circular.

And William was at this event, it says so in the Court Circular, he's just not in this photo.

    3. Thanks for your info!! I just learned a lot from your comment.. How would it not counted as an engagement by anyone? Even the Queen should realize it should count. I imagine the pictures were taken by the mother of the young girl? I don't see how more pictures like this don't emerge from these " private" events. Why is it private anyway?

And yes, I'm one who loved the Duchess in both Preen dresses.. I quiet like the belt. BUT Kate does boggle my mind when she does this.. I don't know that it's ever been quite like this before but the red Preen in Canada, now here, and the black one as well... Now we have the same red dress and tiara that she wore to the last one? It's almost like she's saying spot the difference between the two photos now you're not exactly sure what year or month etc I wore that.. It only bothers me when she requests something really close together or when we don't get a good look. I'm not sure who's idea that picture was but I appreciate it bc not only did we get to see everyone decked out but a much better look at the dress!!

    5. I'm not sure where the word "private" originated in this instance, but charities that are not also patronages are considered part of a royal's private life. These pictures were likely not official. The listing in the CC merely indicates it happened, not that it was an "official" engagement. I kinda agree with JC on some of her remarks on this subject.
Maybe it is similar to a research project where the ranking professor gets credit for research done by the "lowly" graduate assistants. Or a tech company owning all work done by its employees. :+)

    6. What's the rule about what goes on the CC and what is omitted because it is "private"?

    7. If it goes in the CC, then it is "official". "Private" events don't show up in the CC.

    8. Valerie G, regarding the Royal Family Order, we had quite a discussion on this site, a few years ago, as to why Kate didn't yet have one. Views ranged. One thing is clear--it is bestowed at the discretion of the Monarch, and she follows no discernible rules; for instance, Diana received hers almost immediately after marrying Charles, the Duchess of York, nee Sarah Ferguson, never received it, Sophie and Camilla both had to wait 4-6 years. This practise varies considerably from most continental royal houses, who usually bestow said Orders immediately after marriage, I suppose as a *welcome to the family* gift. A lovely gesture.

Much of the discussion on this site centered around the fact that the brooch, carrying a picture of the Queen, was painted on ivory, and we all wondered, knowing Williams feelings on ivory, if that had entered into the equation. However, I think many of us knew that oils can be painted on many surfaces, so, if that was the problem, it could've been easily solved by commissioning a new miniature, on a different medium. My personal point-of-view was that the Queen had already given out all she had originally commissioned, and didn't want to go to the expense or bother--the miniature is surrounded by diamonds, after all; or maybe, she was broke, relatively speaking, of course.

The Queen received her own RFO from her father, when quite young, before she had taken on royal duties and that too was discussed; i.e., had the Queen decided to wait until female members of The Firm had taken on full-time royal duties before granting the RFO?

My own view is that it is disgraceful that Kate has yet to receive the RFO, no matter the Queens reasoning. Disgraceful. Kate has already fulfilled her main dynastic duty--she has provided the Crown with a healthy heir and spare. And, to quote William, when recently in Vietnam: I am very lucky in the support I have from Catherine--she's an amazing mother and a fantastic wife--so it doesn't seem as tho he's at the point of getting shed of her, does it? (This was offered, altho not on this site, as I recall, as a reason why Sarah was never given the RFO, meaning that five years into their marriage, the Queen recognized that her second sons marriage was going belly-up. But, even if so, that still doesn't explain why Diana received her Order immediately and Sarah didn't.)

When it comes to the Queen, inconsistency would seem to be the name of the game.

    9. JC.....or that Catherine already has one of the ivory ones and has chosen with William and the Queen's agreement not to wear it. I am sure she will wear the next monarch's Order. A current one would still have personal meaning to Catherine as a private gift.

These tokens were made well before the world wide ivory/elephant crisis was recognised and
could be considered with that in mind. The RF rarely, if ever, wears animal fur these days-other than trim or at historical rituals , or ostrich feathers, both of which were once the fashion but now considered insensitive to conservative efforts. So, there has been an effort in that direction. With William and/or Charles in charge, I expect the trend will at
some point involve their likenesses painted on porcelain, for example, instead of ivory.

The Queen has chosen to "gift" Kate with
the loan of some top of the line royal jewels. Most of what Camilla wears is non-royal origin, from the Greville collection. I think it is quite clear that HM has great affection and respect for Kate. The picture of The Six, with Kate standing proudly by her husband's side, says it all-unfortunate balcony photos a one-off
matter of last minute shuffling and rectified in Charlotte's first balcony appearance.

It is a gift, not a service award.

"Full-time/ part-time royal" are creations of the media. If anyone can show me an instance of a royal being called that by another royal on audio or the terms being
used in an official British Monarchy publication....I will eat my tiara.

    10. Anon 1, I do agree that Kate, of late, has been given access to the Royal jewellery vault, atho I am pretty sure that the Queen determines which jewels will be offered. Still, rather nice of the Queen. If we suppose that the Queen is trying to make up for the lack of the RFO, that still doesn't explain WHY Kate doesn't have one; personally, I would suspect that rather than laying out money to commission more, she might be waiting for someone who has one to die.

Not sure which balcony appearances you are referring to, but if you meant to compare Georges first balcony appearance to that of Charlotte, this is SOP in the BRF, but so sexist at this time in history as to be downright offensive. Please note: It was Charles who held William on Ws first balcony appearance, and, like Kate, Diana was placed far away; she, like Kate was permitted to hold her second-born, Charlotte, and permitted to stand next to her husband and son.

The Queen and her court might as well be living hundreds of years ago, when monarchs, princes and noblemen would stand above a crowd, holding their firstborn son aloft, proclaiming, by gesture, that he claimed the child as his legitimate son and heir.

It is the accumulation of little details like this which makes me think the BRF should go the way of the dodo bird. And when any British royal male makes a rare human gesture, as William did when he stooped down to teach George about the planes flying overhead (balcony flypast, Trooping the Colours, 2016), and gets a Very Embarrassing public telling off by the Monarch, you realize the Monarch has no understanding, whatsoever, of normal parent-child interaction.

Something tells me that Charles will be no different, as Monarch, further depleting the BRFs popularity.

  11. Jane, I expect you are preparing a post covering Kate's stunning appearance at the Diplomatic Reception. There are arrival photos and an unprecedented photo of the six most senior royals
including William and Catherine. Mine is probably the tenth such comment you've had, but it was so exciting.

  12. Regarding the earrings - the studs appear to be too small for them to be the "birthday earrings". Likewise, the birthday earrings are rounded at the bottom and those Kate was wearing seem flatter.
Judging from the small studs, the flat bottom part and the somewhat irregular shape, I'd say she not only recycled the dress but the earrings as well (apparently just switched the them from left to right ear and vise-versa). Those earrings appear to be just the Soru baroque pearls again.
You can clearly see in the above photos that the earrings have a lighter part in the middle - that is the baroque pearl. The "darker" rim around the light middle part, which makes the earrings look black in the photos, is probably just the small rim of diamonds that surrounds the pearl. The diamonds reflect the light and as it is fairly dark in the room, this makes the diamonds appear dark as well. The small and blurry images do not help, of course.
So, my verdict: the earrings are as "recycled" as the dress and, same as in Canada, she is wearing the Soru baroque pearls again (which is a shame, as they are neither pretty nor do they go with the dress).

    1. You might be correct regarding the earrings. While I like the Soru's, I didn't like them with the Preen. I would wear them to dress up a pair of jeans actually. Recently, I met friends for lunch wearing black jeans, a white ruched v neck surplice top with an emerald velvet blazer on top. The baroque pearls would have gone fabulously, I think.

  14. I'm not sure about the earrings. I suspect they are different, but the question sent me back to old birthday photographs. Is the black polo neck in the day photo from her 26th birthday (with red tartan skirt) the same one that she has worn recently with the tweed D&G skirt at the Nelson Trust and a kilt in Scotland? What do you think? http://fromberkshiretobuckingham.blogspot.co.uk/2013_01_01_archive.html?m=1
