[Updated] Kate & William Bring the Kids to BP For Christmas Lunch

Tuesday, December 20, 2016

Today extended members of the royal family gathered at Buckingham Palace for the Queen's annual Christmas luncheon. This tradition stemmed from the Queen decision to celebrate the actual holiday at Sandringham with only her immediate family. It is a lovely way to gather the broader family to mark the season despite the more intimate Christmas day arrangements. No photos have ever been released from the party, of course, but we almost always get snaps through the car windows as the royals arrive and leave.

Today, there was a bit of a crisis in the whole "through the window" system, because Kate sat in the back seat! This isn't entirely unusual for the duchess to do and in general is a normal arrangement for mothers. She is in the back with her kiddos, both George and Charlotte accompanied their
parents. Nevertheless, it has made it a little harder to see Kate and what she wore.

Kate's first appearance at the pre-Christmas lunch was actually when she was still Kate Middleton in 2010. The lunch was hosted just about a month after William and Kate announced their engagement and the royal fiancée accompanied William to the exclusive get-together. According to Hello! at the time:
They arrived at the Palace at 12.45pm and were among the last to leave – with Prince Harry – two-and-a-half hours later.
It was a year later that the Duchess of Cambridge was first snapped attending as a full-fledged royal. I am struck by how much bolder Kate was doing her brows at the time. I love them!

Some years it has been easier to ID Kate's ensemble than others. Last year (large picture below) Kate recycled her Luisa Spagnoli suit. She has also recycled her red McQueen, her Whistles Sophie Rae and what I believe to be her Paule Ka suit seen more completely on her visit to Middle Temple

Today, Kate deviated a little with this purple coat. Kate has worn a number of purple ensembles, but she has not worn this particular shade. The closest purple she has worn was as an obscure accessory in June of 2013 while pregnant with George.

Today we got a peek at both George and Charlotte who were sitting on either side of Kate in the back seat, watching the flashing photographers on the other side of the glass. In this obscured shot, you can see the side of Princess Charlotte's head:

Mark Stewart snapped a clearer picture:

At the moment, I don't think we will know what Kate wore until she recycles the coat elsewhere. It is either fur-lined, or more likely, she was wearing a stole like (or the same as) the one she wore in Arosa:

I had hoped for some better shots of Kate on her way out, but at the moment it does not appear that any were taken. If some surface, I will update the post.

  1. William always looks very grumpy on this drive. I'm sure he hates the photographers. I feel like if they would release photos like they did last year, it may help allay some of the demand.

    1. Last year pictures weren't released. We saw Kate because she was handed a patronage, otherwise we wouldn't have seen anyone, as it's happened today.

    2. Don't think he is grumpy. This is how he looks when not smiling. And he is driving. Have you seen pictures of the other royals arriving. Very few smiling, but I'm sure happy to be going to the function.

    3. Anon 8:44--I believe Sandy was referring to the family photo Kensington Palace released of the Cambridges at holiday time last year-not photos of the extended family gathering. We never get photos of that.

    4. I am sure I would have the same look on my face if I were trying to drive my family through a set of gates while trying not to hit anyone of the onlookers or photographers.

  2. He is concentrating on driving his family. These photos are taken as the members of the royal family are turning in through the palace gates, needing care, as there are usually large crowds there.

  3. Someone noticed on twitter that Kate is wearing her Mappin and Webb Empress earrings. There's one photo where the light is hitting them just right to see the middle design. George is wearing the Amaia Kids Redwink coat.

    1. I've also seen that she is wearing her Kiki morganite drops. When I zoom in on the photo it looks to me like the hoop from the mora its earrings rather than the empress earrings. Can't wait until we get to see the coat recycled!

  4. Think Kate looks great, at least what we can see of her! Hoping that what Kate wore was actually medium purple, and not off-kilter red--tinted by photographers. Also nice to see the ever-adorable George. Too bad Charlotte is hidden behind her Daddy--seems that George had the middle of the backseat, which, given the floor hump, wouldn't bother him, but would bother Mummy, and Charlotte, like Mummy, is such a placid child that a short drive seated next to George, wouldn't be a hardship; better that Kate keep a close eye on her mischief-maker son, assuming that Williams perception of George is correct.

Jane (Barr), thank you for the quick posts, of late. Appreciated.

    1. Kate is in the middle of the backseat. George is behind William and Charlotte is behind Harry. It's a Range Rover probably doesn't have that hump in the floor in the backseat

  5. Merry Christmas all! Looks like a festive day. Hope we see better pictures, but it is difficult through the car windows.

  6. I agree that it's William's normal face (I guess guys can have an RBF too!). And he is probably concentrating on the job at hand, which is to deliver everyone safe and sound without any collateral damage (ie bystanders). George is totally adorable and I wish we could have seen more of Charlotte as she's cute beyond words also.

  7. Could she be wearing the "Independent Dresskmaker" aubergine/purple coat from Christmas 2011?

  8. or the purple dress she last wore in Canada?

    1. You are certainly right Anon that the color (at least on my monitor)appears to match the Canadian Issa dress perfectly. But that dress seems a little low cut for a luncheon,  much less an extended BRF family luncheon. (Think she wore it at night in Canada didn't she?) The neckline isn't visible in the car because Kate appears to be wearing a fur neckpiece/stole but I doubt she'd keep that around her neck on while eating if its fur unless its actually a part of the dress. But I'm not much good at fashion IDs so you could be right!

The cropped sweater Kate is wearing in the picture where she is pregnant with George is actually a fuchsia pink Seraphine sweater. (No longer available)

I wouldn't be surprised if today's choice was along those lines as well... will be interesting to see it when/if it's recycled!

  10. I wish we could see it! I love Kate in purple, and if she is wearing a stole, she must look amazing.

In case I don't have a chance to pop back in before Christmas, Jane, have a merry one and a very Happy New Year. I've enjoyed spending the year with you and Kate.

To all my fellow posters, wishing everyone a happy Holiday Season and a wonderful New Year.

  11. I am surprised that the 3 heirs -to - the - throne were allowed to come in the same car.

    1. Good point Gracie. That doesn't seem to be as big a concern as it supposedly used to be. Maybe because Will isn't first in line? (And there are 4 heirs in the car...PW, PG, PC, & PH)

      Delete
    2. Lizzie, a very excellent thought re 4 heirs!

    3. Think of the church walk.

      Delete
    4. Or the balconey gatherings (although I did read one place the direct heir isn't really supposed to stand next to the current Queen or King on the balconey for security reasons) I think though as Gracie indicated there used to be more concerns about the closer heirs all being in the same vehicle...car, plane, boat, train..

      Delete
    5. The historic idea of heirs not travelling together was to guard against a plane crash, boat sinking or whatever. The walk really doesn't fall into the category of risk that led to the rule.

    6. I think it was also more important when the BRF was also the actual government

    7. I was thinking of the security angle. Apparently, it is an RPO nightmare.-even with pre-vetting of by-standers and metal detectors, virtually the whole royal family is marching like ducks in a row. There really is no 100% way to secure them. Weapon technology manages to stay ahead of security technology it seems.
First time commenting, Penny? Glad you decided to jump in.

I've actually always assumed that this is why the Diplomatic Reception is never announced in advance -- so that those attending can be assured to some extent of their safety. So many diplomats in one location could be a nightmare from security perspectives, and it makes sense to me not to announce it publicly in advance in order to avoid needless security threats.

    9. Agree, Jennifer. Also it may explain the multiple unscheduled engagements W&C have
had-which irritated the media and some others.

  13. That little George is the absolute cutest thing ever!! When I see these pics, I just can't believe W&K aren't releasing a Christmas pic. The good will and gravitas it would create.... Get a clue W&K!!

  14. Jane,
In the 3rd pic down ( Christmas after their engagement) Catherine is wearing something which seems a similar colour to yesterday's outfit.
Wishing you and everyone a very happy Christmas. To our German friends, sympathy for the tragic events this week.
Hope to see some pics on Christmas morning, but for obvious reasons, I am glad that at least one of Her Majesty's nearest adult heirs will not be walking down to Sandringham Church on Christmas morning.

  15. Dont you think she could be wearing the purple dress from the Canada tour in 2011? and not wearing a coat in the pictures?

  16. Anyone else think Kate has that early, tired pregnancy look? She kept putting her hand to her waist during her last appearance while wearing the flowy floral belted dress. A gesture she often made during her pregnancies.

  17. Today's news of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh's ill health makes me think they could not have felt at all well for this annual lunch party. Don't think a "heavy cold" develops without some warning! They probably soldiered on..

Nice to see all the Christmas wishes - my own Christmas wish would be for more posters to use actual name of some sort, instead of all the "Anonymouses?"

    1. I had the same thought, Kaye. They must have not felt well during the luncheon. Hopefully they didn't pass it along to anyone else in the family.

I am also with you on the wish for fewer anonymous posters here. We can't tell who said what. Difficult.

    2. They may have just carried on yesterday and if so, I hope they get well soon. Could have also been a security issue though that made train teavel inadvisable.

      Delete
    3. I agree about train security, lizzie. Her departure time is known to the minute.
She has about six RPOs to protect her person and I'm sure other precautions, but riding the train appeared to be for PR (and it worked) but no good will is worth risking her life. We really don't know if they were actually there at the luncheon.
I was pleased to see a photo of Lady Sarah Chatto broadly smiling but now i wonder if it was only HM that was carrying on.
Every one of those previous car photos showed Kate smiling. The unsmiling may have just been the photo people decided to go with, but it was a bit strange.

The thing that set off alarms for me was the 30 minute notice. If they were that ill
it should have been apparent earlier
with an announcement made in a less dramatic way.
All speculation, of course. I think it is likely a security issue, given recent and continuing events, and they may have already arrived at Sandringham by alternate means by the time the announcement was made. That's how I would protect the Queen. :+)

    4. Well she went to Sandringhan by helicopter this morning so she wasn't already there yesterday but I agree it seemed more like it was a security decision rather than anything else

    6. The Duke and the Queen have traveled to Sandringham via helicopter, according to The Telegraph. However, the spokesperson only confirmed they were on the way. A helicopter was seen leaving BP. Lizzie may think it is a stretch to then assume the royals were on it. ha!
Excellent idea. Swift recovery from illness, by the way. The noise and the fumes are said to annoy the Queen. I think train rides are another tradition that needs adjustment to the current situation.

    7. Anon 10:02am. Before I wrote a blog I read plenty of other blogs, rarely commented, but when I did, I did so anonymously. You are more than welcome here without a name. I appreciate that you read and that you take the time to weigh in now and again, even without a name. :)

    8. Anonymous, I'm very sorry if I have offended you! But the possibility of being "a troll" had NOTHING to do with my comment; I merely meant it's difficult to know who is responding to whom in some of these exchanges! Can get pretty confusing.

I'm very sorry you feel under attack; I doubt that was anyone's intention, ever.
I do wish you all the best and for the record, I like my privacy too: Kaye is not my real name.

I must say, they all look really beautiful and of course sophisticated. I love traditional festivities in the family, especially on Christmas.
I hope you all gonna be well, it's deeply saddening to see all the pain in the world :(
