in and out of the airplanes. That will get him keyed up to take on his royal duties as early as possible.

Kate has blazers that are on the longer side in her closet and generally I love longer length, but I am developing a hypothesis that double-breasted, because of the added bulk, requires very special, polished tailoring to stop the clothes from running away with the wearer, especially someone as slim as Kate.

Speaking of Valentine's Day, though, let's talk a little romance. Remember when Kate went on a date with William and ended up snogging in the car park? You remember, don't pretend you don't. We all like a little healthy royal snooping. This is a real throw-back to the good old days of Kate-watching, but for my veterans and my newbies alike, let's walk down memory lane. Cast back to 2009...
Great outfit for this particular engagement: it has a military look.
ReplyDeleteLove the blazer; the length is great for wearing skinny jeans. Preferred her hair when it was tied back. She seemed to be wearing heart-shaped earrings.
Thanks for being so speedy with the report Jane.
The "Trio" were out yesterday making a film to be shown on BBC around the time of the London Marathon.
Jean, Glad you mentioned that they were out again Monday working for their charity, training with some of the runners, who have experienced mental illness. Then to Wales early this morning for the cadets. Busy lady!
DeleteReally dislike the outfit choice. It has an 80s feel and she needs to lose those pants! Kate needs to up her casual style game! She could be wearing cute tops, vests etc yet she's dressing old and dowdy.
ReplyDeleteI am becoming increasingly disappointed in Catherine's sartorial choices. These skinny jeans are so inappropriate for official visits. The blazer and gloves are too formal for the rest of the outfit. Instead of smart/casual the outfit looks like a bizarre mix of smart and casual. The blazer looks out of proportion worn with these skin tight jeans. It seems to just hang on her. Sorry, this is a severe crit. I have tried to be positive in the past when something she has worn has not been to my liking. But I can find nothing good to say about this ensemble :(
ReplyDeleteSecond that absolutely. Starchild
DeleteShe looks wonderful! I love that the jacket is red for Valentine's Day and has the double breasted military look to fit the occasion as well. A red military blazer is a classic staple for any wardrobe. Happy to see the return of her boots. She looks just right for a cool and cloudy day climbing in and out of airplanes.
ReplyDeleteI love this look too, Robin. From head to toe. Even the earrings fit today. ☺
DeleteHappy Valentine's Day to all. 💌
And I second the motion, ladies. It is so like Kate to wear red on Feb.14; she often uses colour symbolically, and she always looks great in red. Further, there's a good chance that she was wearings with this jacket, which, upon close examination, would appear to also be made of a material which incorporates stretch, hence, a good match.
DeleteWhat I particularly liked about this jacket, aside from the colour, was its styling; its length, the fact that it had no discernible waistline aside from its flattering cut, and the soft brass buttons. The styling was outstanding, IMO.
Would I have preferred the same jacket in lined 100% wool, worn with a pair of black dress pants in lined wool and smooth black leather loafers? Absolutely! But such was not to be.

To me it's all about what she brings to the engagement. She was clearly happy to be there, participated in all activities and those around her seemed to really enjoy having her there. I like the blazer very much and think the jeggings were great for hopping about and climbing on planes. Great to see new engagement on the 28th with Ronald Macdonald House. Again a worthy cause highlighted which is really what royals are all about.
ReplyDeleteWow. I love this!! The blazer is gorgeous and long therefore the black skinnies look great with it. I actually have those boots which I love and I think with her hair back she looks stylish, comfortable, and on point!! The blazer throws the perfect amount of color and the style is close to military with the buttons.. This is definitely one of my favorites as far as casual goes.. I probably would've gone with different earrings but she's totally outstanding in this!! To those who are saying she's dressing older, you know what they say about keeping something long enough and it'll be back in style?? Yeah, this is 100% proof bc I've noticed all the blazers lately while shopping and blue jean jackets too. IMHO she's dressed perfect for the activities and day!!
ReplyDeleteI'm in agreement, Valerie, I love the blazer & the boots! That shade of red is lovely & the length of the blazer goes well with the skinny jeans. Very appropriate for the day's activities & her enthusiasm while interacting with the cadets is also great to see :)
DeleteI love this blazer. And I love that she's dressed appropriately for what she's doing. Too bad she couldn't bring Prince George with her.
ReplyDeleteYes...he would have loved it!
DeleteThat would have been really fun. The air show with George was such a great event!
DeleteJane,
ReplyDeleteCatherine was at RAF Wittering which is in Cambridgeshire, England. She is in Wales next week
Hmmm. I am slipping. :(. I'll amend when I get home tonight and write the full post!!
DeleteThanks. I missed that, to, Jean.

DeleteThank-you for your positive comment, Robin. After giving up on another Kate blog that had seemed a pleasant forum for awhile, I am relieved to come here to visit with those who realise that packaging doesn't always represent what one will find on closer inspection. According to those who have worked with her in charities, and who never bother to comment on her attire-there is a great deal more to Kate than clothing. It should be obvious by now that Kate, like Anne in a way in her marching to her own drummer on fashion choices,...Kate is her own person. She has demonstrated many times that she will play the fashionable card when it is dictated by protocol, but otherwise dress for the activity...... I grew up in the days of women going to uncomfortable lengths to disguise a shapely-or not-bottom. Some of that still influences my attitude. I have not been able to grow accustomed to the current fashion of form-fitting clothing for both men (William!) and women. However, I am sure that when the fashion moves on to the loose fitting pant style, as it inevitably will, Kate will also move on.....I think the shaming of women for showing a well-contoured bottom while encouraging the display of cleavage is illogical, at best, and somewhat sexist. I thought those days were over. It amuses me that it seems the same people who repeatedly try to shame Kate for tight pants are often the same ones who remark about her lack of curves elsewhere. I'm not sure what is behind this attitude left over from the 1950's; it may well be that is just a convenient criticism, along with the remarks about her hair, thinness, etc. Which is another strange combination-the same who repeatedly remark on the lack of bulk on her also fuss about her tight pants. I would like to suggest that if she is that thin, what is there to display with tight pants? Either she is thin and tight pants don't matter or she has a shapley bottom to display and is not, therefore, too thin.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your entire statement anon 1. I have even seen statements that Kate has an "incessant need to show off her skinny body". What? She is just wearing pants! Its so sexist and its sad seeing it from other women.
DeleteAt a professional workplace she couldn't wear something like that. Skinnies are not appropriate for an official engagement representing the Queen and the royal family. She should wear them at home. Plain and simple.
DeleteGreat comment. I really love it. How about identfying yourself? Starchild
DeleteThe Duchess was not at a "professional workplace", she was climbing in and out of little planes and jumping up and down with a lot of teenagers, so, in my opinion she was well-dressed for the engagement.
DeleteObviously, some here have already forgotten royalfan's links to multiple examples of royal women older and higher in status than Kate wearing very form-fitting pants. By the way, they are called "trousers' in the product description. I do understand it is difficult for some of us on the shady side of fifty to accept the current fashion. Or who were raised in homes with strict rules due to religious reasons. I think the hoop skirt redeux in the mid fifties was regrettable, especially when it resulted in a few whoopsi-daisy wardrobe malfunctions. I did, however, wear hoops and crinolines at the time. Looking back, I wonder-"What was that all about?" It's a phase. Kate very well may look at photos from these times 20 years from now and wonder, too. It will pass. Meanwhile, the constant dwelling on the skinny pants (remember the nude court pumps?) serves as a distraction, intended or not, from the good she tries to do.
DeleteSkinnies and leggings are what is in style right now. For those who think she's dressing to matronly - this is her *not* doing that. For those who are complaining about them, have you ever climbed on to and then into a private plane? My husband is a private pilot and, trust me, there is no graceful way to do that. Out on an airfield it is always windy. If she were climbing up on that wing and then descending into the cockpit in flare legged pants they would wrap around her legs and could possibly trip her. A dress or skirt of any kind would be completely inappropriate. She nailed this outfit today in a style that was both practical and in keeping with the military/Valentine's Day theme.
DeleteAre there any links to this list that lays out what one can and cannot wear while representing the Queen? Or are you speaking from your opinion?
DeleteAnon 1:23 I completely agree! I have two girls, one in school who would be sent home if she wore such tight pants and one who works for the govt who would lose her job if she repeatedly wore tight pants or blouses with deep Vs. The daily world is supposed to be for our professional relating to one another which super tight fitting clothes cause a distraction from.
DeleteRoyals should be no different than regular people and certainly shouldn't be wearing the little that "stars" by and large do. She has those cute track pants--why not wear them? Or a pair of Ann Taylor's that don't mould to your bumm.
Good that she's working, visiting and smiling. Silly choices like these jeans are like preparing for an important meeting and then greeting the people with spinach in your teeth. So preventible. S
I don't believe Kate has been sitting at a desk in a classroom or in an office while wearing fitted trousers. She has been actively engaged in sports or some other outdoor or physical activity. The dictum from the 1950's-whatever you do, bare your cleavage but bury your bum. OR wear a plastic trash bag. The female form is not something to disguise, unless one has a problem with being female. I'm an old lady, but if I were 35 and had a figure like Kate's, and it was in style-princess or char woman, you better believe my curves would not be draped.
DeleteCourt
DeleteWhat a question that is??? Who is not speaking her own opinion here? Everybody's opinion is as valid as yours or mine. Just because some can't take any which is different than the mainstream here is not my problem.
As you all love coming up with other royal's fashion habits, only one question left. Why is this "young" royal perfectly incapable of wearing anything else than skinnies?I could link thousands of pictures of royal ladies wearing totally uncontroversial trousers. Maybe those don't emphasise any body parts when she pulls them a lot because she is that skinny. But reflects a professional wmn at work.
Anon1.28
What curves? Last time, I have seen Kate, I can't see any curves. She is way too skinny, she has broader shoulders now than hips. She is a typical sporty girl. No offence meant by any words, I only described what I see.
DeleteI think Court may just be trying to determine if there is an official protocol available, because if so, that could be interesting. I don't know that she was saying people aren't entitled to their opinions. I don't know, but just reading that in the most positive light. I'd be interested if there was a printed list somewhere, but obviously enjoy hearing opinions, too. :)
DeleteJane is correct. I frequently see people stating what Kate can and can not wear while on duty and I just want to know if its simply their opinion or they have an actual source. The way the statement was phrased made it sound like it was absolute fact skinnies are not appropriate on duty.
DeleteLove reading all this about Kate's skinny jeans. Nobody has said that these jeans are stretch jeans. This was mentioned in an article on Sunday (when the three of them were at the training). She could not be climbing in and out of planes if they were real tight. She has a nice body thin or not.
DeleteI am not a real fashion person but I think Kate dresses for the engagement. I bet she knows people will be talking about what she is wearing. But probably don't give a darn what you all think. And I bet if the Queen would not approve of the skinny jeans she would not be wearing them.
I am in my mid 60's and I think the skinny jeans are great.
I understood what you were asking, Court. It didn't sound negative to me at all. It would be nice if there were a list of what was appropriate. I think there are specific large events where Her Majesty is in attendance for which there are dress codes but the day to day seems to be left to the discretion of the wearer.
DeleteKate looks terrific, and spot on for the event. She looks so happy, and that says it all for me. I love the entire look.
ReplyDeleteShe does look happy. She was just glowing and her make-up was picture perfect. It was a liner look for me, but so many people loved it. I am thrilled it was a win for you on Valentine's Day!!
DeleteI lile the look. I also understand it. While I do thonk Kate should find an alternative to the skinny jeans at times, today it was a good choice. Kate was climbing in an out of planes and doong activities with young cadets. Don't we all have a pair of well worn jeans that we feel comfortable in no matter the activity?
ReplyDeleteAs for the colour of the jacket, my feeling is that it has less to do with valentines day (kaye was worn blue on V Day before) and more about standing out amongdt the blue cadet uniforms. I once read that the queen wears colour so the crowd and security can spot her. Is this what Kate is doing? It makes for great photos
Anon 1, there you go trying to be logical. Ha!
ReplyDeleteBut seriously, how true. 😁
Yes, royalfan. I do have a bit of green , Vulcan blood in my veins....;+]
DeleteIntended to be a response to your 12.00 comment.
Deleteroyalfan 6:02-yeah, I know. I thought I was the only person whose comments wandered afield. Ha!
DeleteWow, what a difference a year makes. Last year about this time and a month or two later during the India tour, we were discussing whether Kate was “allowed” to wear trousers when doing official engagements. A number of folks argued the Queen didn’t allow women wear trousers. Well either those folks were wrong, Kate didn’t get the memo or is ignoring it, or the dress code merely prohibits dressy trousers and not jeggings! I know jeggings are popular casual wear but I don’t see even very young women wearing them at professional work places (nor do I see cleavage displayed Anon 1!) For some events (sailing) they may make sense. But for today’s event I think slim cut trousers with a booty type shoe would have looked more professional and would have matched the blazer styling better. But if jeggings are the way Kate continues to go, I do hope she gets some that she doesn’t have to keep pulling up and adjusting all the time. Yes, photographers will look for gotcha shots but just don’t give them known ammunition!
ReplyDeleteAnd I don't like Will's overly tight pants either so no double standard there.
I really don't think the Queen tells Kate what to wear and not wear. If the queen did not approve of the skinny jeans Kate would not continue to wear them. Kate respects the Queen to much to break any rules that are in place for what and not to wear. And I am sure William would let Kate know if they are not allowed.
DeleteI am bracing myself for the storm of distaste for the skinny jeans, but they don't bother me here. Her bum is covered by a long blazer! Far more distressing are those darned earrings. Someone paid a thousand dollars for those, when they could have gotten the same look for $10 at any American Girl doll boutique.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait until she tires of those earrings myself but I will admit their heart shape (even though I believe they are supposed to be leaves) is Valentines Day themed and we all know how much Kate loves a good theme outfit!
DeleteHaha so true re the earrings SM...heart jewelry always seems juvenile to me. Skinny jeans issue aside, though, I just do not like this jacket. It has a too-square, too long, late 80s circus look, especially in red against black. She looks happy and relaxed, beautiful as always though. And Sunday's dress was so lovely I'll let this one go.
DeleteThe earrings are supposed to be leaf shaped
DeleteKate does love her theme dressing, Anon 6:07. That's part of what I like about her, those little nuances that she adds to her outfits. But I agree, the leaf earrings are my least favourite out of her collection.
DeleteI agree, Rebecca. It does have that Ringling Bros. feel to it. With the black gloves she's just missing a lion to tame. The double breast and gold buttons are so classic that I can't hate it 100%, but I hate it 90% because of that boxy, busy look. It just isn't cut nicely and even the fabric doesn't look luxurious, which it should for that price tag. I would never wear it myself, but it's not so entirely out of fashion that it blows my mind (which has occasionally happened for me with Kate's outfits - part of the fun of it all!).
DeleteI still think she looks fine in her skinny. She has boots on so the skinny jeans look fine. She obviously likes them and has the figure to wear them. Many people just don't like them at all (maybe because they wish they had Kate's figure and don't). I think for this event the black jeans are fine. I'm on my way to the office and have on my green Zara skinny jeans. Many women (myself included) simply do not like to wear "slacks".
ReplyDeleteThere was an episode of 30 Rock where Liz Lemon asked Cerie "Do I look okay in this?"
ReplyDeleteCerie joyfully replied, "That's *exactly* how you look."
And that is how I feel about this outfit. The blazer is gorgeous, but a bit ill-fitting (which does have the benefit of continuing my faint hopes of a new wee HRH). The jeans showcase Kate's lovely legs, but I wish she'd wear a belt or suspenders (the American kind) so we don't keep getting these odd shots of her adjusting her trousers. Those particular earrings are possibly my least favorite of all she owns.
And yet, she's still beautiful, her hair looks great, and she seems to be having a blast with the cadets. So as a visit, it's a win, and as an outfit, it's a recognition that she is wearing one. :-)
100% in agreement. I need to use that 30 Rock quote, it's perfect. :)
DeleteHaha! You have my nomination for best comment of the post.
DeleteCompletely agree with all you said. That shade of red is amazing on her. The cut could be better. The pants would have been a little better if they were darker, or a truer black, which would have worked nicely with the t-neck and boots. The pant wash just made them look faded. Her hair up was the best. Well, her smile and eye twinkle was the best. I do wish those earrings would become lost.
DeleteJane, have to mention again how awesome Kate's Clothes is. Really fantastic. Link to it every chance you can in every post! You should do a press release on how you created the site, you will be a go to source for her wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteIs Meghan's clothes next?!
Kate's Clothes is an excellent resource, Anon 4:30. I use it all the time, bravo Jane!
DeleteThank you, ladies! I need to update it soon, I haven't uploaded her last few ensembles.
DeleteI'll take your advice and link more! :)
Jane, I'm with Anon 4.30. Obviously you're busy but if Meghan and Harry get engaged I would LOVE to follow a blog dedicated to her. As for this outfit...I still don't know what to think! It's really medium for me, neither here nor there. But if one of my girlfriends showed up in a blazer like that I would give a little side eye.
DeleteHappy Valentine's Day Jane!
ReplyDeleteI thought this look was appropriate, but the blazer hung funny in some photos. Cute color; Kate is really embracing the red lately!
I agree. Someone suggested better material, which might have made a real impact. In any event, fun event and glowing Duchess!
DeleteHappy Valentine's Day to you, too!
I love today's look. She had a choice. Catherine could have worn athletic clothes given that she was climbing in and out of planes and participating in training excercizes. Or she could have dressed formally and just stood next to the planes and had a receiving line with the cadets. Instead what she wore was brilliant; allowing her to participate, echo military attire with the double breasted blazer, and look formal and princessy. This is how I would dress...Because I have.
ReplyDeleteI am really glad she changed up her look, too, even if I thought it wasn't a huge hit. That gorgeous red is incredible on her; she looked stunning!
DeleteI found this look reminiscent of a circus ring leader's outfit-long red blazer with buttons, tight black pants and black high boots. All that was missing was the top hat. Certainly not my favorite look for her. I agree with other posters that she should really up her business casual wear game, especially when it comes to trousers. She has made some beautiful choices lately, this one was just such a miss for me.
ReplyDelete-Brooke
Very circus leader Brooke! An apt description - I quite like this look myself and am not in itself offended by her skinny jeans - she is a modern princess on a fairly casual outside engagement -they are totally appropriate.
DeleteI wonder if the references to circus persons are meant to refer to Ring Master. I often think of the Queen as a ringmaster. Standing in the midst of the royals pointing to first one then the other:" YOU there-! Your turn to perform, right after the Corgi the horse and clown acts.
DeleteHaha, Anon 9:32, that is a fantastic way to describe the Queen - ringmaster of the royal court!
DeleteForgot my name@ 9:32, Kiwi Gal- I think the Corgis and horses are pretty obvious. Clowns, on the other hand....And I am not sure about HM in skinny pants. Ha! I think she'd look great in jodhpurs.
DeleteUmm, yeah...the clowns I'm not so sure about, anon 1! Agree about the jodhpurs :)
DeleteI'm loving her hair and if I had that figure I'd wear skinny jeans all the time :) She looks great.
ReplyDeleteHappy Valentines Day everyone!!!
ReplyDeleteOkay..so plenty to say on this look. First off I own these boots and they are so super comfortable and easy to walk in. They were pricey but I get so much wear out of them that it was worth it. They are also perfect for a day like this.
So then...if you want to wear these boots...you need a pair of skinny pants that will tuck into the boots. Tailored trousers would not work inside the boots. So thus comes the skinny jeans. I have no issue with the skinny jeans. For an event like this ....they are fine. I also loved the gloves and the ponytail.
My issue here is with this blazer. The blazer was a nice way to dress it up and make it more formal...and I get the military feel. But I think double breasted is a little out of date and this one in particular hangs very awkwardly at the bottom. Not sure if it is the fabric, the big pockets or a combination of both but near the bottom of the jacket it seems to lose its shape. Lots of gorgeous cute blazers out there (ie: Smythe!! ) that I think would have been better than this.
Also..I know some have suggested Kate should have worn a belt to prevent having to hike up her jeans all the time. That is a problem with skinny jeans...they do slide. And I agree that given the number of cameras following her around she reallly needs to avoid having to do this. But they sit more on the hips then the waist so a belt does not really solve the problem....it just slides with the jeans.
Loved the colours, and loved seeing how engaged Kate was. An excellent visit. PP is very proud I am sure.
Hope everyone is having a fantastic day!
I don't know what or why it is, Laura; your criticism may say almost the same thing as others but it seems constructive and maybe not mean and whiney as some do. (That was actually meant as a compliment.) ;+)
DeleteComing from you, a regular commenter and fellow Kate fan, Anon 1 I will most certainly take that as compliment! Thank you. I do try and pick my words carefully. I also think Jane sets an excellent example.
DeleteActually you can buy a specialty belt made for any type of jeans or leggings with loops that hugs really flat and close to the body. I own one. It is stretchy with a special flat clasp and you can adjust it super tight to keep any pair of jeans in place. It is a fantastic belt sold and manufactured by a small company. Agree with your take and with Jane's about the odd fit and style of the blazer. I would prefer a heftier fabric stretch jean and I also am not a fan of the earrings. But she looks gorgeous and so very involved and happy. Fun to see the photos.
DeleteI need that belt, ali! Didn't even know it existed...
Delete...perhaps a little too regular. Ha! Well deserved, Laura.
DeleteAli, would you (in the interest of the greater good) tell us who makes this miracle belt? I tend to have gapping at the waist if all my trousers (tailored or not), and would LOVE such an accessory!
DeleteThat kiss, though...whoop! ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm hearing the words to "Give them something to talk about." 😉😊
Delete:)
DeleteHaha, great song, royalfan! I'm glad Jane added that great throwback pic for Valentine's Day, so cute :)
DeleteAgree about The Kiss-isn't that a famous painting?- very romantic and strategic .
DeleteIt's a famous sculpture by Rodin..may be a painting too.
DeleteGustav Klimt painting?
DeleteI probably was thinking of the sculpture, lizzie. Also, a famous photograph from WWII-the sailor and the lady in white. I think William and Catherine's may be my favorite. ;+0....I'll have to look up the Klimt painting. Oh! The Kiss as in Judas kiss? That's a whole other subject.
DeleteHi everyone,
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree with you Laura. When I saw the jacket I couldn't believe afterwards it was that expensive considering it's shapeless and the fabric is not the best quality... a blend of rayon and only a touch of wool. If it was plain wool it would have been much better on how it holds itself. Besides, get rid of the pocket and the feel would be different. Anyway, apart from that tricky sartorial choice the Duchess looked lovely. Jayne, I really value your opinions on the DOC fashion misses and hits! That's what I like to come to your blog. You stay true to yourself when you write something. Way to go! Xx
You make an interesting point about the material. I wonder if this has been a different composition if it would have looked a little better. I think wool would have held its shape better and given it better structure, which might very well have pushed it back toward a win.
DeleteAnyway, thanks for reading, Sophie! Happy Valentine's Day!
I think you are totally right about the fabric Jane. It's the sagging quality of the blazer that makes it slightly off for me, but a wool blazer would have kept it shape and looked more tailored which would have made the blazer seem more military than Dynasty.
DeleteI love red and black, and wear them together often. This jacket would not be for me as I hate big shiny buttons on clothes, and the pockets seem to be sagging a little, I don't really mind them on her because she looks so good in red and black!
ReplyDeleteAnd I think it's awesome that she wore skinny jeans and boots to an official engagement. She jumped up and down with the cadets and was photographed squatting to pull her skinny jeans back up, seemingly oblivious to who was watching. She represented and just enjoyed herself. Clearly she feels it's ok to BE herself. And that's just fine with me.
Belle
She does look SO good in red and black!
DeleteThis is one of those patronages right up her alley.I'm impressed by her February schedule. She is definitely stepping it up.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree, Candice, it's great to see :)
DeleteHi ! I just want to say something about those skinnies. I don't like skinny jeans, I don't think they look good on anybody (not even runway models) BUT I wear them all the time just because they are sooooo comfortable!!! I tried them once and I could never take them off. Maybe she (Kate) feels the same?
ReplyDeleteCh. from UK
I agree with your comments on the blazer but I think the color looks great among all the blue uniforms!
ReplyDeleteI think Kate may have said, "Darn it! I'm tired of being cold!" That would explain the choice of jeans over other pants. I believe I would have liked the outfit better if the jeans were blue instead of black. It's tricky to combine different black pieces, especially if the shoes are black suede. The black suede will often look darker than black pants/jeans and make them appear faded.
ReplyDeleteI hate this blazer. Again with the dowdy 80's silhouettes - this one straight out of Falcon Crest or Dynasty! All it needs is shoulder pads and Linda Evans could rock it. Also, SO much red. It's obsessive! Of course Kate looks gorgeous in the color, she seems to look gorgeous in every color! But it's way, way too much red. So Nancy Reagan. These big gold buttons...ugh. I agree with Jane about the double breasted style often running away with the wearer, a hard look to get just right, and almost always dated and oversized. Hate these skinnies too, with these tired old boots. Kate is so beautiful, with such a perfect bod, why does she stick with these tired old pieces so long - a little modern touch, more sporty perhaps, I just really find the combination of this huge red blazer with skiiiiny jeans and flat boots bizarre. I think a different blazer, pant and boot would have been fine - just these in particular are confusing. Ok, that all said - for those who complain that we only talk about fashion and not the issues - I thought this blog was at least half FOR the fashion! Am I wrong? Discussing fashion in a fashion forum is perfectly appropriate and says nothing against the occasion, or person being discussed...it's just like discussing art, or dance, or literature. I really enjoy it, and miss the good old days when there was hardly a thing to not like about Kate's looks - these days it is far more miss than hit. And then she'll wear something that is SO GREAT - like that McQueen gown, omg. I love to discuss those times too!!!!! So I think there is plenty of room to discuss the issues, the state of the nation, the royal family, the Middletons, and Kate's fashion, without taking it personally. Cheers and thanks Jane for the opportunity to weigh in! :)
ReplyDeleteI think you're spot-on Jane, in your review. Thank you
ReplyDeleteI think if I were to wear this outfit, I would think it looks ok, and then struggle to leave the house. I would change last minute back into something I knew worked. She is trying to force this to work but it just doesn't! I love black skinnies and boots, they are pretty much my winter uniform, but the blazer is bad. It just seems off.
ReplyDeleteThe blazer is more a jacket than a suit, once you look at it as a kind of coat, it works.
DeleteLove the ponytail! I wish she would do her hair this way more often.
ReplyDeleteInteresting engagement on May 13th; the "\trio\2 are giving a " Party in the Palace" for children who have lost a parent on military service.
ReplyDeleteI hope they release some photos from that event. I can't imagine anything more adorable than seeing all three of them having a tea party with children.
DeleteExcellent. The perfect trio for this engagement. Without a doubt! :-)
DeleteI think the fact that it is being held at BP during garden party season pushes it up a notch beyond Madelyn's, although I thought those pictures were adorable. I hope Charlotte in a party dress and George in his shorts and knee-highs will be there, even if briefly. William and Catherine will essentially be doing host duties for the Queen. Will it be outside?
DeleteI'll probably be in the minority (or very possibly the only person) but I hope G&C aren't part of the tea party. Sure, it would be fun to see them but I don't think a repeat of the children's Canadian party would be good. I know we were told things changed when photographers left (and maybe they did but that's also easy enough to SAY) but I'd like to see the invited guests-- children who've lost a parent-- be the focus of not just Harry's attention but also W&K's. In Canada the guests just seemed to be "props" at least while photographers were there. All of W&K's attention was on their own children. Maybe when the children are a little older they could participate without needing constant parental supervision.
DeleteAnon 1, your comment at 4:38 made me "go there", once again... ;-)

royalfan 9:35- you added some new. I especially like the Hello magazine one. Mette-Marit looks pretty good. And they are both Crown Princesses and ten years older than Kate. It's the fashion. Boot leg and flare pants, maybe even disco, will rotate back. They still would not have worked for the plane-climbing activity.
DeleteI agree Anon 1. The ladies do look good. If the jeans fit, wear them. 😊
DeleteWell researched, royalfan. They all look terrific! I'm not anywhere near a thrity-something any longer and I think they are very stylish. I'm not sure what the issue is. And I agree, anon 1, the plane climbing activity really needed something like this for warmth, safety, and modesty.
DeleteI really love the outfit, minus the jeans. They should have been darker, in my opinion, but other than that, I really, really like it!
ReplyDeleteLove your opinions as usual and Good Job!
Dear Duchess or Duchess's stylist... please discover the utility and polish of a straight leg cut trouser. It adds no bulk, like the wide leg or boot cut pants do. Yet, the pants provide some polish and modesty (without looking dumpy) in the thighs and tush. A bonus with high quality straight pants is you can tuck them in boots without much bulk. Not as well as the leggings but you can still get the tuck. You're now moving closing to 40 so watch what Sophie and Queen Mary wear for their casual, sporty engagements. Signed, a fan!
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of this look. Overall have been frequently disappointed with her looks lately. It seems like instead of working as a team and being all on the same page the stylist, makeup artist, and the hairdresser are all on their own program. I don’t know who puts her style together but sometimes I wish she would get some advice from professionals to shake up her current style or routine. Princess Mary of Denmark, who is 45, often appears more youthful and stylish than Kate at only 35. It isn’t that she is in bad shape; no Kate appears quite in shape. Perhaps maybe even to the point that she has lost some of that feminineness that comes wit having some woman curves. It’s just a combination of everything. She has really aged herself with the style, makeup, perhaps over exercising and not eating enough. She is not running for a president so I do not understand why she dresses like Hillary Clinton. She is so young and beautiful; it saddens me every time looking at many of her ridiculous outdated granny-ish looks when just a couple of years ago she looked like a total bombshell, so youthful and radiant with lots of interesting outfits. I get it we all age, but we have to get on with it. Just because she had kids doesn’t mean it’s the end of her womanhood.
ReplyDeleteI guess it is more of a general rant ☺
