[Updated] Kate, William, and Harry at the London Marathon

Sunday, April 23, 2017

The big day finally arrived! Today was the London Marathon featuring the Royal Trio's mental health campaign.  William, Harry, and Kate met and mingled with their Heads Together team earlier in the day, posing for pictures, listening to stories and giving last minute hugs of encouragement before the competitors headed to the start line.

KP
The Royal Trio officially began the race by pressing the big red start button in unison, launching 50,000 runners onto the course!

The button doesn't bite! :) I guess they didn't have a practice round pressing the button, but they figured it out. Apply pressure downward. Harry is like, "I'm gonna let you guys work this out--call me when you are ready to push."

The trio watched the race from the halfway point. Runners would slow to greet the smiling royals, but the three would urge them on. Prince Harry especially seemed keen to keep people on their time. :)

Kate learned this two-handed wave from Prince George in Canada and she deployed it full force today.

The duchess was radiant. Dressed in a Heads Together jacket, dark jeans, and her white Supergas, she looked simple and sharp next to the boys. Kate's hair was immaculately blown out, and she wore her Lauren leaf earrings from Kiki McDonough. Kate is clearly wearing one of her Breton tops under there, which is a perfect choice because the navy and white combo matches her Heads Together gear.

At first I thought she was wearing her Tori Breton top from Ralph Lauren. But, when the sleeves stick out at the cuff you can see it has quite a generous depth of white cuff--more than her Tori has. It also has a tighter knit quality from what I can see. Based upon the stripes along the collar she doesn't have any Breton tops that match the pattern, so I think this is new. While I was on my Easter/HolyWeek hiatus Kate wore a new Breton top by MIH Jeans. This is that top. You miss stuff when you go off the radar for week.

I chose photos that highlighted what I wanted to show in Kate, but quite a few of the pictures I saw (and didn't pick) had Harry looking a little glum. Obviously a few stills don't necessarily tell an accurate tale, but he did seem a little on the quiet side this morning, occasional bursts of enthusiasm aside. Harry gives the bottle a little squirt to hit William right in the face.

I love the obvious warmth between Harry and Kate. They have clearly got along for many years, but we have seen them working and interacting together publicly a lot more in the past three years or so. Good to see them so close. I am so interested to watch the dynamic if Meghan joins the family.

The Duke and Duchess and Harry have reportedly been absolutely amazed by the response they have received from this initiative and have decided to extend the campaign. What that will look like practically speaking is not as clear, but obviously they feel they have built great momentum and really collectively hit their stride on a project they can develop further.

KP
I am not exactly sure what is happening here. It sure looks like William is trying to give Kate a quick kiss, but maybe he was just trying to whisper and the camera caught him at just the right second... Maybe.

At one point, a runner ran by and threw water at William. He took it well, but Kate looks a little non-plussed. I don't blame her. First, she isn't dressed to get wet. Look at that glossy perfect hair and make-up. She is the Duchess of Cambridge dressed to be photographed for worldwide consumption. Even more concerning is the security risk this poses. No one should be throwing liquids at the royals, and I am sure Mr. Security & Co. are reviewing this and trying to come up with ways to minimize something like this in the future.

Obviously today was a pretty straight forward in the fashion department and an easy win. It was really fun to see William, Harry, and Kate pull off such a successful endeavor and garner the kudos from media and royal watchers alike. They've had some bumpy press over the past five years, and I for one and happy to see them applauded for the work they do.

This shot really summed up the day, supportive hands and heads together.

  1. It was so good to see the three of them having fun and their chemistry together! W&K definitely seem to be back in sync, and Harry was affectionate with both of them, too. It is also great to see them socialize with others in a really unguarded, fun way, really (using "really" as what I have dubbed as Kate's clutch word ;-) I'm glad they ramped up their presence and spent so much time at today's event.

I too noticed that Harry was hit & miss - either very happy and enthusiastic, or very withdrawn looking and then physically withdrawing. Hard to say why...a fight with Meghan, issues with "work" (negotiating or fighting for something he wants? can you imagine sometimes the tension/fighting between KP & CH & BP?!)

On a fashion note, I bought the Supergas in grey - they are comfy and a cute, low profile sneaker. I love the white, but I would dirty them too quickly then be upset. The on-trend Adidas sneakers bring back nostalgia of being 12, but they're a little chunky for my current sense of style at 33, so these are a great option. I paid $70 CDN, so the price is right, too.

Loved your sense of humor in today's blog, Jane :-)

    1. No problem with white Supergas, you can pop them in the washing machine

    2. I actually have them in white leather and they are easy to keep clean.

    3. Thanks for the tips! I've never tried the washer/dryer for shoes, so I should probably get bold and tackle that ;-)

    4. For what reason would they have been out of sync, - A?

  2. Another new striped top?! She must have a closet full of them! She looks really great here, her hair especially. Love the photos you chose, Jane. The two-handed wave & the big red button perplexity! :) I hope Harry is OK...I think this week must've taken a bit of an emotional toll. Well done to the three of them & also to the runners participating!

    1. Confession: I *love* Breton and striped tops. After reading all the complaints I counted mine today. They total 3 in navy/white, 1 green/navy, 1 black/white, and 1 red/white/blue. And those are only the long and 3/4 sleeves! Nobody ever says to me "Another striped top?" Glad I'm not Kate!

    2. I'm a fan of Breton tops myself :) In Jane's original post, she thought it was a 'new' Breton top, but it turned out to be the MIH Jeans one she's worn previously. I was surprised that she'd wear a 'new' one that seems similar to her other Breton tops, but it was actually a repeat. I didn't mean it as a complaint, I find it a quirk of Kate's...in a teasing way!

    3. It really shows what a fish bowl they live in, doesn't it? Wearing one of my Bretons today. ;-)

    4. Yes, a fish bowl indeed! Bretons are stylish & versatile ;)

    5. I love to hear about the striped tops. I love them too. They are versatile, and always look fresh.
Believe it or not, I have recently made a whole shelf for them..not yet full! I intend to buy more as time goes on :-)

  3. Seeing the moments where Harry seemed a bit glum made me think that the event was probably bringing up many different emotions. He has really put himself out there recently and I can only imagine that seeing their campaign come together in an event on such a massive scale would bring with it so many memories and thoughts including some which aren't happy. It's an amazing thing the trio have done with Heads Together but part of why it happened is because of their personal pain. Im so impressed with how brave they have been sharing their own struggles and turning it into something really positive.

  4. Thanks for the quick post! As for Harry, I think he is usually like this. He's casual & always up for a laugh but seems confident with himself & doesn't care about constantly posing for whatever picture might be taken at any moment. Hopefully, if things work out with Meghan, he will have a partner to encourage him daily.

  5. Wow! What a fantastic event. This is motivating me to pull out my running shoes from the back of my closet and get back at it!!

For me, this is what a "modern versions" of the monarchy should look like. Actively engaged with the public while supporting and promoting a very real and difficult issue in our Society. I also like that we are now hearing about some of the changes this campaign has facilitated. Truly excellent work by the three of them.

Kate is absolutely in her element. She looks wonderful, engaged and enjoying every minute of it. I wouldn't read too much into Harry's behaviour. This is a long event. Probably 5 to 6 hours if they were there from start to finish, which it looks like they were. Hard to be "energetic and outgoing" every minute of it. Having said that....Jane's "reading between the lines" observations are usually quite accurate.

Love Wills green running shoes! And "A" thanks for sharing your experience with Supergas. I love it when readers share their experience with products we have discusssed on here. I am a "converse" kind of gal but maybe it is time to mix it up!

  6. What they have done and the amount of work to coordinate such and effort is amazing. I'm happy to hear that they will continue the campaign. Kate looked fantastic and, as one of the fans of her many Breton tops, I think everything today is a big win!!

  7. Jane why do you remove your comment that was it seemed Kate in this video was giving him a reassuring pat and replaced it with Harry gives the bottle a little squirt to hit William right in the face?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because I came to the blog to update and add the video of Harry squirting William and I saw that the video I added was that one already. And then I couldn't find the patting video I thought I'd had before. That's the problem with looking at multiple video sand embedding in HTML. :(

  8. Wonderful event, and everyone was so engaged. I love all the picture and the three of them interacting amongst themselves, and with the runners. The pictures of William and Kate are fantastic. She looks gorgeous today.

  10. A fun day. Feel we've been super spoiled with all the W/K/H videos, pictures, interviews, etc. over the past week. I think the initiative was very successful and I hope they do keep it up.

Off topic - but when does the polo season start? I'm wondering if Meghan might make an appearance at a match this summer. It isn't an official engagement, right? And didn't we see Kate at the polo before her and William were engaged?

  11. Jane that's standard at water stop at marathons. All in good fun.

  12. A word of thanks to Jane for her reports this week. There were so many engagements: many of them only announced at the last minute, that it must have been difficult to keep up.
    You did a fantastic job.

  13. Myeh look but what a fun time Kate had! It's a long event to keep your spirits up, and Kate did great. I sigh at another stripe top, and I just don't like those shoes. They seem almost too low profile, but I'm into snazzy sneakers. And as a distance runner I concur with others: water squirting isn't mean;)
I'm so glad this charity work the trio has been doing highlighted the marathon too - I've only run one but they're very physically demanding (as is the training) and it was moving to see some of the Heads Together runners so excited and happy and cheered (royally!) on:)

    ReplyDelete
  14. If this campaign was Kate's initial idea - as the video chat they did together said - then I think today being the culmination of a years work was why she was absolutely glowing, buzzing, engaged & looked so chuffed - and then even more beautiful than ever. Fun runs are always an amazing vibe and place to enjoy the merger of fitness, mental strength, tenacity & the human spirit collide - so all that tapped into & then the resounding success if this heads together campaign .. and that's my take on Kate the Great's happiness today! It's been a wild week of viewing & ive changed my fb profile to the heads together banner too. Been sharing the articles & videos & podcast to my circle online & hope to keep the conversation going too. Thanks Jane.

  15. What a fun event! If you've ever been to a marathon cheering on friends, you know how exciting it is. Thanks for these great pictures too! These 3 are so personable & encouraging. That photo of William appearing to kiss Kate. I think he is. That's something my husband would totally do. He'd probably be trying to sneak a hug too. They were standing there so long together in the crowds & they were in casual mode today. They are always more touchy when casual. In any case, there is clearly unconditional love beteeen them. Kate always has the quiet contentment, security & confidence of a cherished woman.

  16. Sometimes combat veterans are particularly on edge in environments where there are surrounding crowds and security seems low. The quick shifts between enjoyment and disquiet would be consistent with that.

    1. Very good point

    2. Agreed, I have a few combat vet friends and their sharing of unease at events like these (big crowds, noisy) has made me very sensitive that that in others. On a macro level that's such a shame and I hate the fact that any living being has to deal with that.

      Delete
    3. It's more common than we would like to think. My S-I-L has PTSD and can be quite uncomfortable in crowds.

      Delete
    4. That is an excellent point. I have a friend who served in Afghanistan and he is always uneasy in crowds; this could certainly account for Harry's mood over the weekend. While he is often in crowds, yes, he is not often right in the thick of something that lives and breathes like a hoard of marathon runners and spectators! It's easy to forget that he is indeed a combat veteran.

  17. What a great event for our favourite young royals! All their ideas and efforts have come to fruition at this excellent marathon. I am thinking (and hoping) that William is about to kiss Kate on the head. If so, how gorgeous!! I do think that if someone threw water on William on purpose, it is a security issue, as it could potentially be dangerous. It could mean that anyone could throw acid and a small explosive etc. onto them. Maybe that is why Kate is looking a bit stunned. I would too. Let's hope it was just for fun, but I guess we will never know.

    1. That is quite a potentially scary situation, my heart was in my mouth a bit there! I would be looking like Kate did at that moment...William took it pretty well, in contrast to the teasing squirt of water he received in the face from Harry!

    2. Yes, Kiwi Gal, William did take it well. He is a good sport. I saw some photos that showed them all laughing, what a relief. Haha, gosh Harry is so cheeky! William must have come home soaked, poor man :-)

    3. Good point! A potential security issue never crossed my mind. I'm sure it was innocent.

    4. I agree especially as there has been quite a run of acid throwing incidents.

    5. I'm sure it was innocent as well but there still was that potential. It was so well publicized that they would all be there. I'll bet their PPOs were nervous wrecks!

  18. I pray that whomever Prince Harry finally marries doesn’t disrupt the obvious love and comradeship that exists between him and William and Kate. Hopefully that person will fit in as seamlessly in their family as Kate did. It has always been evident that Harry and Kate look on each other as brother and sister, and Harry seems to like the Middleton’s (Michael, Carole, Pippa and James) very much too.

  19. I noticed too that Harry seemed a little not himself. Maybe it was all the people and noisy environment...my dad was a WWII veteran and was always bothered by crowds and noise. I wonder if Harry is a little sensitive to it as well being a veteran himself. Just a thought...

  20. That last picture of the three of them with their hands on each others' backs ... I love that. It seems to be a snapshot of their relationship. I LOVE the friendship and love that they all share and I agree with "Anonymous", Harry's future wife needs to just blend right in with that. Because it is BEAUTIFUL!

The closeness and support of the hands on their backs and the very apropos #teamheadstogether on their jackets is a perfect combination. Bravo to whoever gets this photo credit. Well done!

  22. Jane, if you've never done so, I highly recommend spectating at a major marathon. I've watched NYC a couple times and have seen numerous smaller ones as well. We have a specific charity that my husband, myself, and our friends all fund raise and run for; one of our teammates ran London yesterday! Marathons can truly bring out the best in people and spectating fills me with joy. I can completely relate to the giant grins on the faces of the Royals because I feel immense pride for all the runners, and the good spirits are contagious. Thanks for all the videos, it was fun to see!

    1. I have observed a marathon before and I'm so glad they were at the half-way point and not the "hit the wall" point. We were following our runner to different locations and it was really painful to see that 20-21 mile spot.

  24. I hear tossing water on the water handlers is a tradition, but throwing it on Prince William was not cool imo.

Agree with whoever pointed out the close family dynamic of those three. That could all change if Harry brings the wrong person into their life. Hopefully she will be content to play the role of "newcomer". Because that's what it takes to incorporate yourself into a new group of any kind.

    1. I get your point about Harry's wife being a "newcomer" to the family but I certainly hope he realizes that his wife shouldn't feel like she and their marriage are the third wheel or somehow less important to him than being part of the royal trio. It would be massively unfair for Harry to put his relationship with Kate ahead of his relationship with his wife because Harry and Kate have been pals longer.

  25. Could not agree more.

  26. Harry’s future wife doesn’t have to be subservient to Kate, nor does Harry have to put his marriage behind his relationship with his brother and Kate. Hopefully, whoever the woman Harry marries will get along with both William and Kate, and they will all like each other. Sometimes when a new person comes into a family that was previously closed and loving, the family rhythm is altered in a negative way, feelings are ruffled and people drift apart. It would be very sad indeed if for any reason at all, Harry, William and Kate would lose personal contact.

    ReplyDelete
  27. My favorite events are Kate and Harry events. They look like they have so much fun together, and I think they feel like they can be a little more relaxed together, as opposed to Kate and William who work so hard to keep a professional distance most of the time, which I don't really understand. She looks lovely as always.

But I do enjoy seeing the sister/brother chemistry between Kate and Harry. 😊
