Sneak Peek: Kate Wears Armani

Thursday, April 20, 2017

The full blog post won't be live until this evening, but a "Sneak Peek" on today's ensemble was absolutely irresistible. Kate, William, and Harry are at Global Academy in London and Kate chose a bright red Armani suit for the morning engagement:

Kate is carrying her nee Etui clutch and wearing her Empress pendant necklace and matching earrings:

Rebecca Deacon was spotted yesterday and she is again on the job today, wearing a J.Crew skirt!

There are a few aspects of Kate's ensemble that I generally really dislike, but are huge hit here. Can't wait to talk more tonight!

  1. I loooooove the overall sleek lines of this skirt suit but have some nitpicks myself. There's something about those decorative sunburst seams that teeters on the edge of looking cheap to me. From afar it makes the garment look wrinkled and rumpled. And actually, the way the sleeves lay and the skirt pulls when she walks also looks bunched and rumpled. Even with those nitpicks I do really like the overall structure of the suit and think it's flattering on her. Like a real power suit there :)

The nude accessories are pretty blah, I particularly dislike nude with the orange-y red here for some reason. The jewels are fine. Hair and makeup have been so, so good recently! So happy she ditched the heavy under-eye marker/liner in favor of a slight cat eye. And her hair looks luscious and full, particularly extra volume at the back of the crown.

I don't know why but I find it kind of funny that all three of them crammed into the backseat of the 'Rover at the end. Reminds me of me and my two brothers loading up to go somewhere with mom and dad :). But sure what are they going to do, hire an entire second car and drivers/PPO's for Harry to go off alone for a short ride back to KP?

    1. The sunburst seams remind me of a lot of dresses from Ivanka Trump's brand. That was my first thought..I thought that was big a few years ago. But it gives her nice shape, so I shoved the thought away. ;-)

    2. I also giggled a bit at them hopping in together, with tiny Kate in the dreaded middle seat. Royals...they're just like us. ;-)

  2. Oh I LOVE this outfit! The color is reading a bit more on the coral/orange red side on my screen and the color is fabulous on the Duchess! The slim fit and tailored top are perfect on her fit figure. Very flattering and really highlights her height. Love the nude shoes and clutch and the hair looks great. Beautiful!

    1. Agree! It accentuated her physique and height, and the nude accessories work well with the color (it's spring, and what do you really do with this color?!). It looks a bit more orange-y red to me too.

    2. The suit looks coral to me as well. It's perfect for her figure and the whole look says Spring. 🌼⚘🌹

I really like the suit. I anticipate many will critique the fit and gathering in the sleeve and skirt. At first I thought it could've been tailored better. But if you compare the arrival and departure photos, the suit has settled.

Being a suit wearer myself, and reading up on the fabric, I wouldn't be surprised if the duchess had static (which often is worse when wearing stockings). Just a thought for those about to comment on fit.

    1. I agree. DffD-I also think the skirt bunches when she walks. The photos of her standing still had no "wrinkles" in the skirt. Same situation with the beautiful suit in the Netherlands. Some static could also be involved. Gorgeous suit. Perfect fit. Armani! I think they were made for each other.

    2. I think the fabric might be contributing to what you are calling bunching. Its a stretch jersey which is going to cling a bit more.

    3. Duchess fan from DownunderApril 20, 2017 at 7:56 PM

Yes, bunching happens when you wear unlined skirts with stockings. I usually go a size up in unlined skirts to avoid the bunching and creasing when seated. My static comment also came from the jacket - that shouldn't cling in the arms like it is for a designer piece. I know I wouldn't be impressed if I experienced bunching for a sub-$1000 suit.

I think the lesson is that a few lovey outfits are lacking the polish you would expect of these designers. Perhaps Catherine needs to take a walk and sit for a while when trying suits in future!

  4. VaVooom!!! Kate looks amazing!! I love that colour on her. And what a great cut with fabric that moves with her. The nude shoes and clutch just let the suit shine. And the hair, just beautiful. It is a 10/10 from me.

    1. She really does look amazing. I love it when she wears pencil skirt suits because I think its her most flattering silhouette. In general, Armani fits in a lovely way. Actually, I like the gathering effect as it gives the skirt a slinkiness that's a teeny tiny bit sexy. This is one of her best looks ever imo.

    3. Checking back to take another look at this suit and I would love it in black... with black patent sling-back pumps or sexy sandals!

  5. I loove everything about this outfit. Nice structure. Outfitwise, this is a perfect one. Also reminds me her green 2 piece worn recently.

But I'm getting tired seeing same colour solid red outfits. There are infinite colors in the spectrum and Kate always choose similar outfits with the same colour. Mostly Red, Blue and Green. I would love to see more colours, patterns and styles on her. For example she can choose pastel colors, orange , lavender, Magenta , Cyan, Turquoise, etc. :D

    1. Turquoise, lavender, and purple are the colors I've been hoping to see her in. Maybe she just doesn't like those colors. I love seeing her in pink and yellow neither of which she's worn lately.

    2. More turquoise & purple shades please, Kate ;) Pink, yellow & orange would be great, too. I'm getting a bit of red fatigue this year...

    3. She did wear that purple Issa in Canada the first time and I thought the color looked great. Turquoise I'm not so sure about on Kate.  Can't quite picture her in that color but maybe that's just because I don't think I've seen her wear it (although there was a turquoise-y blue in the print dress she wore to Pippa's recent dinner party.)

    4. What about that gorgeous turquoise Jenny Packham gown?

      Delete
    5. Lizzie she has a turquoise tank top I can recall seeing her wear twice. Once in Ibiza after her and William broke up (she was pictured with Sophie) and once walking George as a baby in the KP Gardens with her female PO. I find it's a great colour with brunettes!

    6. I always considered that JP gown more of a teal than a turquoise. Gorgeous gown though!

    7. The JP gown was gorgeous Anon but to me it was teal blue, and not what I would call turquoise. Even so, it's been a pretty long time since she wore that.

  6. Love the suit and prefer the "nude" accessories to black. She has worn black quite frequently with red. Like the jewellery choice too.
She looked beautiful; hair lovely and she just sparkled.
Hope she had a seat belt in the centre of the back seat of the car.
Fascinated by the school they were opening. Giving young people the chance to be educated with a career in view.
Looking forward to the marathon on Sunday,

  9. I love when she wears a suit, it is smart and business, not like those boring, matronly dresses she often chooses. But my favourites are the Rebecca Taylor suits and I would like to see her in a trouser suit

  10. I love the nude accessories with the red suit and her hair is amazing these days. The suit itself is nice and looks lovely on her but not sure how I feel about the zip on the jacket. It makes the jacket look a bit dated.
On a different note: Rebecca Deacon looked really cute today too!

    2. Who was that attractive, professionally-dressed woman walking with RD and William's aide? She came out, saw the cameras, and went back into the building. She seemed to be avoiding the cameras-she walked on the far side on the way out, away from the photographers. Rebecca walked so close to the photogs, I thought she might run into them. Her outfit was nice, but I thought it was a little snug-fitting and casual for the way the others were attired. I thought maybe the second woman was Harry's assistant. Or Kate's new private secretary, although I have a feeling this will be a separate position from the on-site aide/ LIW.

    3. I think she looks cute but Rebecca's outfit looks wintery or at least pre-Easter to me. But Kate's sense of the seasons puzzles me at times too. Rebecca's outfit is a bit casual but Will and Harry looked awfully casual to me too.

      Delete
    4. Rebecca's job is to look nondescript in her role so as not to be noticed. We notice her hear but I would venture to guess not many others do. In that role, the black skirt, tights, and shirt were just background colors. Wills and Harry were far more casual than Kate but it all went together well in the end. They are a dynamic threesome.

      Delete
    5. I didn't think Rebecca looked inappropriate but just hot. Long sleeved black sweater and black tights look hot for daytime in late April to me!

Otherwise I thought it was a cute outfit.

  11. This is absolutely beautiful. I love it. I think the zip and the detailing give it some interest and it is professional while still being just a tiny tiny bit sexy.

    2. Gosh,  I thought I was the only one. I do like the color well enough and like the shape of the skirt more than some of the wide stiff skirts she's worn. Not so fond of the front zipper and the suit seems to fit poorly. I agree with the poster who said static cling might explain some of the extreme "wrinkling" on the sleeves and across the skirt. But shots of Kate's back and her side when she is reaching out to shake hands (pics on other sites) clearly show the outline and ridges of her bra because the jacket is SO tight (and unlined) And the side stitching on one side of the skirt doesn't seem to have been done properly.  (It looks like one piece of the material was stretched more than the other during the stitching process.) Armani?

      Delete
    3. I was surprised when I read the jacket was unlined. I would have expected better quality from an expensive designer even if it is from their diffusion line.

      Delete
    4. A thought....

Assuming the suit is unlined, I wonder if it was designed with the current zero tolerance for panty hose trend in mind...?? A trend that I am not smitten with.

      Delete
    5. Could be royalfan. It doesn't look like there's enough room under it for an anti-cling slip. But even without hose, lightweight skirts made of synthetics like jersey tend to cling (like after sliding out of the seat of a car) so it likely would have happened anyway even without hose. A spray of static guard can help but that's not always possible for everyone to do. Just not the best design for this material IMO.

  13. Love the suit, she looks amazing.

  14. Bravo to the three of them for opening the dialogue on mental health issues. Harry's interview was very courageous, and insightful. He spoke so openly about his emotions, and that was so affecting. For people to hear a high profile person speak about feelings and doubts that plague everyone at some point, is invaluable. It gives them hope, and the knowledge that they are not alone, and, gives them the courage to speak about their own demons. I can't praise Harry and William enough for speaking out about their own problems, and their mother's loss.
The stiff upper lip generation will be replaced. To encourage young children to keep it together and carry on is so detrimental. Poor George VI, or Bertie, as he was called by family. He was cowed by his own father, and was bullied because of his stutter. His solace was his beloved family, or "we four", as he referred to them. I imagine it must be very emotional for William and Harry to listen to their great grandfather struggle. Of course we cannot truly know what went on behind closed palace doors, but at least now, the stuffiness and closed off emotion generation, has been replaced with a more open and sympathetic one.
I applaud all the efforts to open the doors, and shine the light, and better understand our fellow human beings.

  15. I find this look boring, dowdy & once again uninspiring.

  16. I can't decide on this one. If it's red and not coral I like it better. It really depends on which picture you look at. I don't like zippers that zip at the top and bottom so that's a negative for me. Overall, I think it would have looked better if she had worn a slip or had the skirt lined better. I agree with whoever said there was definitely a static cling issue going on. It fits her wonderfully but I can't decide on those darts. Edgy or weird? Can't make up my mind. Love the jewelry she chose and I think the nude (and not suede) accessories are seasonally perfect.

  17. For anyone who is interested, I've started a blog on mental health: https://shatteringthestigmaofmentalhealth.blogspot.com/?m=1

Working on this blog has been a long time coming, and I hope, through my own lived experience with mental illness, that this project can be helpful and supportive for others. The Heads Together Campaign means a lot to me and I am very proud of William, Catherine, and Harry.

  18. Hello all...

So overall this is a win for me with a few small reservations. I definitely like the suit jacket with the pencil skirt ...far better then the tea dresses and mid calf length skirts. IMHO. This to me is chic and professional. I think the nude accessories were perfect given it is spring. I think the "bunching" of the sleeves and the skirt might be a static cling issue as others have mentioned..(Rebecca...wear are you with the Static Guard???) but I also wonder if the skirt might have some "stretch" to the fabric. Skirts made of a stretch material are super comfortable and easy to walk in but on the flip side tend to be very clingy. The hair is fantastic (really has been for her last couple of outings...) and I love those earrings.

The reservations: The zipper on the jacket feels a little bit like the 1990's and I am undecided about the "sunburst". Agree with the comment above that it does make the outfit look at little "cheap". Which is surprizing to say for a label like Armani. But it might be better in person that it is in the photographs.

But overall I thought she looked amazing and I hope she keeps heading in this direction satorically. This campaign is just outstanding and such a needed and worthwhile conversation. Can't not applaud them enough for taking this on.

    1. Hi Laura. I commented about this above. The fabric is a stretch jersey which would cause it to be fairly form fitting and clingy. Actually, I like the effect . Sexy and professional at the same time 😀

  19. The Duchess is lovely with an enviable figure but this outfit is a miss in my opinion. Although I like the jacket, a heavier weight fabric and a decent lining would have made a world of difference for the skirt. This fabric would have been far more appropriate for an a-line or fuller skirt but I think it looks cheap in this straight skirt, which is clearly wasn't.

    1. C 7:47 Completely agree with your assessment. For these expensive, designer outfits to look so cheap and ill-fitting is continually amazing to me. I do agree her make-up and hair have been gorgeous lately. This is a marvelous and worthwhile cause.

  21. Great suit - perfect proportions for Kate (finally) and a much better red than that "Santa" red with the black buttons and belt - and I've always been a fan of the nude shoe - it elongates the line whereas a black or darker shoe cuts off the leg and looks somewhat dated, IMO. In this ensemble she looks immaculate!
