[Full Post] Kate's Sailor Crops Sink the Fashion Stakes at 1851 Roadshow

Saturday, June 24, 2017

A week ago Friday, on June 16th, the Duchess of Cambridge made a visit to the Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre for the last 1851 Trust Land Rover BAR Roadshow. Four area schools were participating in a day that would incorporate STEM studies with sailing.

@LandRoverBAR

According to BAR's press release:
The 1851 Trust roadshows use Sir Ben Ainslie’s British America’s Cup challenge to inspire both primary and secondary school pupils into STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths), with practical applications of the challenges the team has faced in their preparations to compete in the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda.
Kate was booked to participate in a treasure hunt where all the questions were math and science-based, and an activity to highlight the dangers plastic refuse in the ocean poses to wildlife, particularly to birds.

@LandRoverBAR

The princess had been scheduled to get out on the water, too, as she often does on a Ben Ainslie visit, but due to the tragedies that overwhelmed Britain this month, that portion of the visit was cut out, because it might have looked too cheerful for the national mood of mourning.

@LandRoverBAR

The Duchess wore an ensemble that divided our fashionistas. We were already familiar with her Zara blazer and block heels from J.Crew. Those debuted in Canada with rage success in 2016. For this event, Kate gave the look a nautical twist by adding new crops.

They are J.Crew's Sailor Pant in Two-Way Stretch Wool and feature the oversized button closure on the front and a "kicky," i.e. flared opening. And that, my friends, is where these crops wandered off the reservation.  I think the flare is a little too dramatic. If you look at the product shot on the left, the model is standing such that the opening looks more tailored. That looks polished, but on the right, and on Kate, the actual flare is more apparent.

As I say, I know this really divided the fans, and I know some of you really loved these. I was excited that Kate is continuing to vary her business casual and I really like the nautical look, so I was thrilled with this outfit until it hit the knee.

But, I think the trousers are off. To my mind, they are too flared and they hit her a little too high. Notice the product shot shows the crops hitting the model just above the ankle, while Kate's are hitting low calf. That isn't the most flattering place to hit, even for someone with legs as picture perfect as Kate's. It took the sailor theme a little too literally. I really could imagine a small runaway cabin boy who had been at sea six months and outgrown his trousers... Not the look she was probably going for when she went nautical.

@AberdeenAssetUK
Finally, the shoes just didn't go with the ensemble. Given how high these trousers are cropped, adding heels made the look awkward to me. These trousers would have been helped by a less formal ballet flat or almost any casual flat. So, no on the shoes, too. Happy Saturday, right? :)

Still, it was great to see Kate experiment. These fashion forays always maintain an element of risk and even if she didn't completely nail this look, it was a great try. The fact that she was incredibly radiant helped, too. I know others noticed it; Kate looked magnificent. The photos that crop out the crops are some of the best pictures of Kate this month.

So, the verdict is a miss. She didn't pull the look off, and if she goes for sailor pants again, she needs to find a pair with a longer inseam and she needs to keep the look "cool" to be trendy. Formal shoes and even the jacket, probably weren't the right vibe. But, big win for being absolutely glowing and super props for wearing something new and unusual!

  1. I think you're right. Didn't quite look right. The shoes were wrong. Didn't like the flare of the pant leg.

  2. Random comment...Jane, what do you think of doing a post on Pippa's honeymoon outfits?:) I know it's not directly Kate related but we all love the Middleton ladies' style here and I think it would be a fun little post while we are waiting for Kate's next appearance:) Any chance?!

  3. I am happy for any woman with a figure to pull off sailor pants, being too blessed in the hip area myself to wear them. Kate looks great as always, although I agree with Jane that the length is off. You know what this outfit needs? CORKSWOONS! Yes, I said it! I think the cork platform would be an homage to all things nautical and they would elongate the lower part of her leg.

    1. In which way is cork a hommage to all things nautical?

    2. Corks float?

    3. Susan, you're not alone in wishing she had worn her Corkswoons. :-) Trends aside, those shoes, together with a more tapered pant leg, would have been very chic IMO.

    4. Corks do float. Work with me here, people...😜

    6. Thank YOU, Susan.

I'm relieved to know that there's another Corkswoon fan out there. How I wish that Stuart Weitzman would come up with a pair that's a bit closer to the ground. I love the look, but fear the height! :-)

  4. She's pretty tall right? At 5ft10 myself, I struggle mightily with pant length, and bless capris and crops every day of my life because it doesn't really matter as much as a full length trouser leg. Shoes are a definite miss, though.

I am six feet myself so I understand the struggle lol. But I think Kate can afford to get her clothes tailored! Every fancy dress I have pended (for prom and sorority formats) always has to be lengthen because of my height.
I just don't like anything that is 3/4 in length in pants or dresses they do nothing but make your legs look short and stumpy even on someone tall like Kate

  5. Agree with your analysis. Overall impression to me was they were a size too small. Shame from waist down outfit was ruined.

But also agree she looked amazing and lighting must have been perfect because her photos are some of the best.

  6. I agree with you, didn't like that particular style of pants on Kate and shoes didn't suit them either.Loved the blazer though

  7. I think they are just not well designed pants:), which frankly is often the case with the J Crew product line. Looked like a lovely outing and that she and the kids were enjoying the activities.

  8. I completely agree with your assessment of the length/flare issue and the mismatch of the shoes, which I quite like. But it's such a pleasure to see her experimenting with her fashion again!

  9. I used to be a die hard crop girl, but I'm 5'3 and just started working in an office where everything has to be perfect with my wardrobe. It made me start paying attention to what looks good on me, that could be a better look if I switched it up a bit. As much as I love a good crop, I took one good look in the mirror and said "nope, time to stop wearing these." About a day or two after I made that decision, I saw these pics of Kate and I cringed. I just don't think crops are a good look anymore. If she had worn tailored ankle length slacks it would still look business casual, on theme, and elegant.

    1. I normally would agree with you. Crops are hard to carry off. But I do like these. The crops that you tend to see everywhere, massed produced - no, I don't like those.

      Delete
    2. I completely agree. I am also 5'3 and have a body type that can wear almost anything, but not crops. They look hideous on me!! So happy to see her doing something other than the skinny jeans and worn out wedges... Meghan Markle will be a lot of fun to watch style-wise if they marry...

      Delete
  10. The shoes were a big miss for me too! They didn't match in color or style. Also, if I recall, Kate is actually shorter than most realize right? Isn't she more like 5'5/5'6 but her usual heels make her a good 3-4 inches taller?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I believe Catherine is 5'9", Pippa is 5'5" and Diana was 5'10".

      Delete
    2. When you google she is said to be 5'9 without heels.

      Delete
    3. There is no way Kate is 5'9" without heels. Compare her height with others. Prince Charles was the same height or very slightly shorter than Diana. In 4" heels she appears to be the same height as him so I'd say she is 5'6", maybe 5'7". Pippa is a bit shorter, probably 5'3" or 5'4".

  11. Did anyone notice the girls in the background on the video all had similar pants on as Kate?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I couldn't pin down why I didn't like the look, but you nailed it. I didn't want to be negative since I had expected her to show up in a Breton top and navy Blazer, in other words, I was happy she wore something more original. But these crops aren't her best look.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I was just thrilled we didn't see another blue-and-white striped top! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  14. I am short-waisted with long legs and inseam. An ankle length on others is a low crop on me. If I buy a crop, it would fall closer to my knee. Visually I am used to crops being of varying length from below the knee to above ankle length. It is the flare that I dislike. I am careful to avoid flares or have them tailored out if possible. Having said that, I do like Catherine wearing crops. I take no issue with the nautical theme, especially with her other outfits that have military flare. As to those who say the crops are too tight and would have Catherine go up a size, the fabric is stretch wool. They are designed to be form fitting. I would bet that a size larger would also be tight along the leg but would gap in other areas.

  15. I loved the whole outfit but the shoes. I think heels work with this outfit, but these shoes look clunky. Kate always sparkles at Ben events.

These type of pants are very popular right now. Milania Trump (sorry for using the T word) has worn several pair while traveling. She pairs them with heels. Obviously, hers are not J Crew and cut better, but the leg opening is still big. That's the look.

    I think it's a sold A.

    1. If saying Trump bothers you, you can go with First Lady of the United States.

    2. While I don't follow Melania's style closely, I've seen photos of her wearing different styles of cropped trousers. The only ones I've seen that were wide at the bottom were "wide legged" all the way down, a totally different style. She's also worn what looked like cropped jeggings and cropped straight-legged trousers but I've not seen her in cropped tight trousers with a bottom flair like Kate's. Except for maybe (a big maybe) the cropped jeggings,  none were as short as Kate's. It's just a really awkward length as Jane noted.

  16. The pants are just one size too small for Kate. That's all

    ReplyDelete
  17. When I was growing up, these would have been called "flood pants." I don't like them at all. On the other hand, I don't mind the shoes. They are not my favorite shoes. I really didn’t care for them when we first saw them in Canada, but I think the chunky heel kind of goes with the pants. (Heels and short pants don’t usually go together, but the model is wearing much higher heels.) I like Kate's earrings. And her hair has never looked better... so glossy and healthy looking.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Absolutely agree with you, Jane on all counts. Also agree that the pants should be a size or two larger. The whole outfit just didn't work (shoes especially). Jacket was too dressy for pants, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I loved the pants and thought the flare went with the nautical theme. I loved the shoes, but you're probably right that a flat would have worked better. Just so happy that she's hopefully moving on from the skinny jeans, blue/white striped top and wedges. Now if we could just get her out of those lace dresses..... ;)

  20. Loved the top half 10/10. Pants 8/10. The shoes ???? I just didn't get the connection there 2/10.
Kate glowed though, her hair looked amazing and she looked so happy.

  21. Agree regarding the pants. Would've been fab full length. Almost Maxima-esque (OH HOW I WISH she would ape Queen Maxima of the Netherlands at least part of the time).

    1. Well my comment to you royalfan 10:09 in which I complained about not being able to post right under your comment was suddenly whisked off to ether land . I did nothing mechanically to cause it.Now it appears to be located under your comment. I have had my comments moved on down after being published in order to make way for someone else's preferred remark. So-who knows where this will end up.
I was saying that I had noticed a ten plus second delay in uptake on some of my comments. I think that might effect their being seen on email. Just a thought.

On another track, I chuckled to see KP Twitter's version of the Trooping balcony scene. Camilla is nearly completely cropped out of the photo on the left-only an edge of her hat(maybe that's why she wears those enormous toppers) and her left arm show. However, Peter's daughter fully appears on the far right-she was positioned slightly separate and could have easily have been cropped out, allowing Camilla to shine forth while still displaying the entire Cambridge family, HM, the DofE, and Charles as well.
If that isn't a statement on the KP opinion of the balcony situation, I don't know...
Since the KP folks are paid through CH, what do you bet that photo gets altered to show the boss's wife? If not, there is hope yet for KP to become a true voice for WCH, instead an echo of CH.
Also, over at KP, Harry's activities are not dominating as usual. Although he is/was in Africa and those trips are usually generously pictured, I don't think there is one photo. It is possible those photos appear only after he has returned, for security purposes. We'll see. I've been interested to see any KP response to Harry's interview. Apparently, CH/Charles has again spoken through an unnamed "source," via a reporter's story. He has been catching a lot of flack from internet commenters plus indirect criticism from his sons for lack of interest and sympathy for them. A personal direct quote or interview would have been nice, but I guess that will have to suffice. To me, it sounded more that he was promoting his image of not seeking the throne and being busy elsewhere, rather than making a supportive statement for Harry.anon1

    2. I can't say I've ever seen remarks moved to make space for supposedly preferred remarks. Sometimes, comments submitted after others get published first, so it could appear that that is happening but I have just always thought Jane needs to think about certain comments before she lets them go live.

      Delete
    3. I don't control where comments post, and they shouldn't move once they do go live. Some comments are held back, and sometimes I get to the comments as I can so they go out at odd times. I try to approve everything each time I check, but if I am on the metro or something, I'll lose my signal and only get out a few until later. But, as I say, there is no ability on my end to move a comment based upon a preferred ordering. They are time-stamped and that is how they should post.

      Delete
    4. Please see my June 27,12:10 comment from the previous post. That will explain my preferred remark statement. I couldn't think of any other reason why my reply to a comment appeared immediately following the comment I referred to and two days later royalfan made a comment, which was inserted above my reply. The time stamp was not followed. Two days after that an anonymous commented and my reply ended up not associated with the original comment. Blog communication can be confusing enough, but it does help when replies are kept in the original order and thread in which they first appeared. That was my main concern.
It wasn't held back. It was there and then it moved. Something has mal-functioned. It has happened to be before here. It was suggested then that comments could be re-arranged to make a thread flow better (or some similar explanation) anon1

    7. Anon1, I have not experienced comments shifting after they post, but it can happen if I click on "preview" before I click on "publish". *Sometimes* it will move it to the bottom of the page and when i go back and click the reply directly under the original comment in the thread, my comment appears where it should be and is ready to publish. I don't understand it, but it has happened more than once.

I realize that this is not the problem you experienced.

Regarding KP Twitter, well, thank you for making my morning coffee taste even better this morning. I admit to enjoying that! Lol.

Just another one of the perils of blog commenting, I guess. If you can deal with no email alerts, royalfan, I guess I can deal, too.

    10. Balcony saga addendum; the photo remains cropped, but there is a post with a short film entitled: "The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall Review 2017." It lists all their activities and accomplishments , primarily in numbers and mostly featuring the prince's Trust Activities. Actually, I think at least some of the events are from 2016 and possibly before. I know the numbers are not for just this year for the Prince's Trust .
I finally figured there was no companion 2017 summary and review of W&C's activities because 2017 isn't over. Apparently C&C felt the need to tout their deeds at this time. On KP Twitter. I can understand why such an obviously expensive PR ploy would appear on the CH site but can't figure out what it is doing on the KP site which is by title supposed to be devoted primarily to the activities of WCH. From time to time other royal activities are covered on KP Twitter, but they nearly always involve at least one of the WCH group. The Queen with Harry at Young Leader's awards and last time with William, I believe, for example. Not one mention of W,C, or H in the CC film that I recall. I must remind myself who signs the paychecks of the KP staff.

But the balcony photo stands as it was originally posted. There is that. anon1

    11. Anon1, I am back to receiving email alerts. Lol. Go figure. ;-)

You said the magic word...paychecks. In the meantime, I will gladly enjoy moments like the Queen appearing with Harry at this time; her recent comment on mental health; and her driving in the country with Carole. This speaks volumes IMO.

    12. What HM does must speak for her, as she speaks little-at least about family, issues. Or speaking through a quote from a garden guest..
And what she does regarding family does indeed speak volumes, royalfan.
      On another note:
Remember that bit on KP Twitter with Harry and the Queen and Michelle Obama? Hilarious! I love when she allows her sense of humor to come through. The Olympics and Bond, James Bond.." Parachutes. anon1

  23. I am a big fan of J Crew and I loved this outfit on the Duchess. The problem was more the size she chose I think. Just a tad bigger might have suited her better and the pocket and thigh area. I actually loved the whole ensemble and thought she looked classic and radiant. I adore those shoes and they are very on point for today's fashion. Big win as far as I'm concerned and loved that she wore trouser/capris!

    1. I agree Bri. It's so nice to see her try something new instead of trotting out the usual casualwear suspects. The fit isn't perfect but like another poster, I'm not sure how a larger size would look as the material has stretch. The flare of the capris is on point right now as are the shoes. I really like the block heel with the length and slight flare of these trousers.

  24. Pips had similar pants to these in the DM. She wore real heels and I think the whole leg was wider cut than these if a remember correctly. Also, Pips make-up has seen a huge improvement. Kudos to her.

    1. I preferred Pippa's pants to Kate's. Pippa's was definitely wider/looser at the thigh & was more flattering, IMO. Pippa has been looking good lately, I think marriage is agreeing with her :)

      Delete
    2. I like the look of Pippa's cropped trousers also. I agree they are a different style and much looser and more flattering than Kate's. (One article called them "cullottes." I didn't know that was a current term but they are reminiscent of that old style.) I think the red shoes she wore looked fine..and since Pip is pretty short she might have looked really dumpy if she'd worn a shoe like a ballet flat.

Ideas about why Pippa's not wearing either of her rings these days? It seems odd (she frequently jogged and walked her dog wearing the engagement ring pre-marriage) I don't think it has anything to do with the marriage. But I don't know that I've seen photos of her wedding ring. Is it a style that looks right worn alone? She looks like she lost weight before the wedding so maybe the engagement ring needs resizing but I'd think the wedding ring would have been the right size or would have been resized before the ceremony.

    3. lizzie, I hadn't noticed she wasn't wearing her engagement or wedding ring. That is odd...I have no idea why she wouldn't be wearing them. Maybe she needs them both resized?
Turns out Pippa was wearing a jumpsuit & not pants :) Either way, I like the cut much better than the J. Crew pants Kate wore on this occasion. Oh, how I would love to see Kate in a jumpsuit one day...
