George Does a Tarmac Toe Dance as Cambridges Land in Poland

Monday, July 17, 2017

Late last night I thought, gosh I wonder when William and Kate's trip to Poland starts. Lo and behold,  that would be today.  It's been an incredible summer, but very busy one. A lot of non-legal things have slipped through the cracks. But, here we are. The Cambridges are on tour.

KP Family

I have good news and bad news. The good news is the tour is off to a smashing start. William and Kate have brought their little charmers Charlotte and George.  George has just hit the age where he is getting awkward with strangers. He was reluctant to greet his fans when the family deplaned:

And then stood on the tarmac doing the shy-shuffle. We've all been there, right? Toe-tapping imaginary lint around while we try to pretend we are quire relaxed at the presence of other humans.

Nothing says, "I'm confident and I know it" like a model worthy pose while you take comfort kissing your dad's knuckles. I love this sweet child.

Kate wore McQueen, and as one reporter remarked, carried her best accessory, Princess Charlotte, who by the way, is not suffering from George's sudden stage fright. She has been waving and shaking hands and generally yucking it up with all about her. They'll have to rein her in soon before she decides to enter politics...

To the delight of many, Kate wore a custom dress from a Polish designer this evening:

Of course, the big news item today was that Kate was gifted something meant for a baby, so her response was to tell William, "I guess we will have to have more babies." That has turned into a headline on the Daily Mail claiming Kate wants more kids. I watched several iterations of the comment throughout the day on several news sources, and it really is like the game Telephone. Everyone puts just a hint of a spin on her remark until it's a completely different statement. As it happens, I think these two are planning more kids, so we will see how that plays out. In the meantime, raise your glass to another Cambridge. And santé:

The bad news is that I am not going to cover the tour. Some you will read this as: I am quitting blogging. No. I am not quitting blogging, but I am not covering the tour. Covering a tour is exponentially more work then a regular post. There is sooo much to keep track of, to report on, and explain. More pictures, more data--it's a lot to synthesize and pass on. This week I have to choose the law instead of Kate.

I will post a little something at the end of every day--my favorite pictures or some piece of news that surfaced that was interesting--and on the weekend I will do a full retrospective of the tour talking about the clothes and the highlights. That will be a big post. But, I can't spend thirty-five hours blogging this week. It often disappoints me that in life, you just can't always have it all.

The consolation prize, if this disappoints you, is that if you want more tour coverage, I will be active on my Instagram account, where I post stories and pictures. I will "go live" tonight to talk about the day and the fashion. If you aren't familiar with Instagram Stories, you can start a live video and interact with other Instagrammers in real-time, which allows you to ask questions and for me to answer. So, we can have a quasi-conversation. Anyone who wants to tune in for that should follow my account and I will go live tonight and throughout the week. Remember that Stories are only available on the mobile app, you can't join in from your desktop.

    3. George is soooooo cute and quirky- always comes up with a side of his personality we haven't seen before. And Charlotte is soooo beautiful especially receiving her Possie of Flowers in Germany this morning. Kate & Will have a charming family and look like they are doing a great job of parenting + everything else on their schedule!! Kate's wardrobe is maturing in a positive way with so much style & elegance. Loved her Polish designed dress at Garden Party with her Pearl accessories. Good job Cambridges!!! Keep it up :)

  2. Will look forward to your wrap ups Jane. I think the Cambridges are wonderful representatives of HM. The children were precious, and George's shyness doesn't bother me at all. I love the picture of Kate having a glass of wine. Perfect. All around a fabulous first day.

  3. I am also grateful you are continuing to blog. Your site is the most fun to read! Grad school is time consuming and law school even more so. Thank you for taking time to write on the blog!

  5. A powerful woman knows how to manage her time and prioritize so I totally respect your decision and will look forward to the wrap up.

I just can't with that dress this evening - it's dreadful - but everything else is a smashing success. Especially her makeup in that photo with the wine - wowie!

    1. I completely disagree :) I love that she is embracing a local designer and that she is experimenting. She seems more comfortable in her skin in these photos than she has during other tours and I think she is pulling it all off quite well.

    2. I love the dress as well. The dress is unusual and deviates from her usual style. I really like that she has experimented with fashion in this instance.

    3. The many different but competing elements--conical breast structure, asymmetrical pleat cut outs, geometric trim, vining waist detail-- gave me a headache. But I guess I prefer more traditional elements in "party" dresses worn during overseas tours. Still, it was nice for Kate to wear a local designer. Think it will ever be reworn?

  6. Seem to be a lot of grumpy faces from Kate? What do you think Jane?

Also blog when you can! It should be something you have fun with not stressful.

    1. I don't know if I'd say she looked grumpy, but she looked something...my guess is tired. This was probably a long day for her, on top of two recent evening engagements and all the grooming & prep required for a royal tour with kids. I appreciate how she lumped so many events together for work, but was thinking it might make her tired before a demanding tour.

  7. The fashion winner... Charlotte! Love her red dress.

And George, he can't get any cuter!!

I loathe that pearl necklace. I think this is her second or third time wearing it? Ugh.

    1. YES. I LOATHE that necklace as well, glad I'm not the only one. It's like some pre-teen took a jewelry making class and grabbed all the big white fake pearls for her dangly creation. Love the earrings but that necklace is perplexing and discomforting!

    2. I didn't like the pearls in Paris, but really liked this with this outfit. Then again, I thought the whole evening look was a fusion of bold and classy ;-)

  8. They all looked terrific upon arrival. Love Princess Charlotte's dress. The Duchess is wearing beautiful new jewelry. For the evening I love the shoes and jewelry and that she is wearing a Polish designer but the dress is not to my taste. It's nice she's taking some chances but this is a miss for me. The first lady of Poland is quite stylish and lovely.

I look forward to seeing whatever you post. Good luck with everything.

  9. I thought Kate's arrival outfit was fantastic. It seemed to fit the occasion very well. The colors were a nice nod to the host country and the family looked very coordinated. Her new jewelry was beautiful. It was fun to see her wear another ring which she doesn't do very often. I was less thrilled about the evening wear. Really, the only part of her dress that I liked was the embellishment around her waist. The skirt and bodice left me less than impressed.

  10. I think that's a great compromise, Jane. It takes wisdom to realize that you can't have it all at the same time. Tour looks great so far. They are squeezing so much in.

  11. I love the evening frock (except for the placement of the darts that resulted in a pointy effect). Wish Kate had her hair down and worn different/edgier jewelry.

Her chignon is so much larger than I would expect it to be with her shorter hair.

  12. If I was a betting person, I would put money on the Cambridge's NOT having more children. Not because they don't want more, but because pregnancy is too hard on Kate. But I don't bet and I'm often wrong.

I tried to like the edgy evening dress but I just cannot. Catherine looks lovely despite the dress.

  19. I was a little disappointed by the suit Kate wore this morning for the family's arrival in Poland. I don't dislike it. I understand the significance of the colors, but I’ve seen this basic style many times before. And white has never been one of my favorite colors on Kate. I do like the ruby jewelry, though, and Charlotte’s red and white dress. I’ve always thought that George was the cutest little boy. Even as a baby, he had the most expressive face (remember the New Zealand/Australia tour?)!!

I actually like the evening dress (except for the prominent darts). I’m really glad Kate chose a dress by a Polish designer. I wish there were more photos showing the back of the dress. I also like the shoes… but the hair, not so much. This updo is too severe, in my opinion. I wish Kate would wear a darker lip color sometimes, especially for evening events.

My ancestry is half Polish, so I'm particularly interested in this tour. I'm sorry you won't be covering it, Jane, but as someone else said, blogging should be fun and enjoyable for you; it shouldn't be an additional source of stress. I really don't know how you do it, going to law school and all. I appreciate whatever tour coverage you can fit into your schedule.

  20. I really like Catherine's arrival outfit. I prefer it to all the other white coat dresses that she owns. I would like to see her team her white outfits with something other than these praline shoes though. I like elements of the evening dress, like the leaf embellishment around the waist and the fact that the black edging around the neckline and arms are a discontinuous line. But the rest of the dress doesn't appeal to me. But she looks lovely and ladylike as always.

I know that you're busy Jane, but when you get the chance....(ha ha)please do a post on all Catherine's white/ivory outfits. She has so many now and I would find it fun to compare them side by side. All the best getting through your busy week Jane. Will miss your regular blog but look forward to Saturday's review.

  21. Oh I am so disappointed you can't cover the tour Jane but you need to do what's right for yourself and I can only imagine how time consuming it all is - Yours is one of the only measured and balanced Kate blogs out there - so I will miss that, but best of luck with your studies!

  22. I loved the evening dress and the evening look! Total win, IMO!! The designs of everything were fairly bold, yet the white & black and pearls seemed to anchor the look as more classy. I didn't really like the pearls in Paris, but they work so well with this outfit.

I immediately noticed that her brows didn't seem as defined today - I think she either didn't fill them in or she didn't fill them in as much. I think with the heavy eye makeup and dark hair she needs to make sure her brows are done. I wouldn't say filled brows are a makeup rule, but being used to her doing it and how photos can wash out and then seeing them less defined it altered her look.

The jewelry seems to be hard to identify. The earrings and ring have noticeable yellow gold claws on the rubies. Are the claws on the pendant yellow gold too? Trying to determine if she mixed and matched from different gifts she's received.... A possible wedding gift from someone, or a push present for George who was born in July??

  23. Forgot to mention, at the party a server had serving try of water glasses and white wine glasses - Kate took the wine and William took the water. We know Kate enjoys wine, but it also caused some theories for me: (1) after long day of work, like many of us, did she want a glass to treat herself, (2) does she do it strategically to dispel pregnancy rumours, (3) a social lubricant like many women/people do?
All are fair possibilities they're just my thoughts :-)

    1. I don't know ~A. Good question. While I usually don't engage in pregnancy speculation, as we all know there have been frequent reports in the media of a new pregnancy since Charlotte was only a few months old. (Her long ago reported pregnancy "with twins, one of whom will be named Diana" still shows up on the cover of US tabs I see at the grocery check-out. It has now surpassed the gestation period of even elephants as it's been going on almost two yrs!) Kate must be aware of at least some of it and it must get old. If I were in Kate's position I'd vastly prefer the media to obsess about my hemlines/necklines and leave my womb alone. :) But if I had to guess, I'd think she was tired (looked tired to me) and just wanted a glass of wine at the end of the day. And it had the added bonus of perhaps helping to dispel rumors caused by her earlier throw-away line about the infant toy. I seriously doubt that line meant anything about their family planning but was just an off-the-cuff 'filler" comment. Regardless of what she and Will are planning, I  bet she wishes she'd said something like "I wish we'd had this wonderful invention when George and Charlotte were babies."

In some ways, I wondered more about whether Will's choice of water was supposed to send a message. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't often see him drinking in public while working for awhile. It would be too easy to attribute any gaffes he might make to alcohol and to cause resurrection of old stories.

    2. Maybe they switched later, A. Ha! William must be the designated driver. Or--if she actually had wine, did anyone actually film her drinking it all, other than an occasional sip, which I understand is not harmful.
      I go with door number 2, A. anon1
PS who said they were water and wine? Were they labeled? A reporter tasted them?

      Delete
    3. Pretty sure she drank some really strong stuff today. And I kind of doubt there was a conspiracy with the hosts to sub Kate's wine or other supposedly alcoholic drink with something that would look like alcohol like diluted apple juice or tea when she could have simply declined. A few sips might not be harmful. No one knows for sure especially early in a pregnancy. But I can't imagine Kate would publicly drink if she knew she was pregnant.

  26. I was impressed by George and Charlotte's behavior. Clearly, George was shy and not enthused, but he was well behaved, not whining or making a fuss. Charlotte looked happy to see people. Loved Kate's outfit. Can't go wrong with McQueen.

  27. Another stimulus for the tarmac tap-dance (ha!, Jane) other than shyness-a dislike of airplane toilets. They sometimes intimidate me. Who knows what a four year old would think. They still have very active imaginations at that age. "What if I fall in and get sucked out into space?" anon1

  28. Jane, I will miss your daily tour coverage but entirely understand that you have to put your career first. I admire your dedication.

I am one of the seemingly few who absolutely LOVED her evening outfit, her pearl necklace, the whole thing. I was less than thrilled with her day dress, but deeply covet that diamond and ruby necklace, and thought that the kids looked spectacular.

  29. I see Kate's confidence increasing at a very good pace lately. Perhaps it's a combination of experience AND some of the bumps in the road (think along the lines of recent articles).

Re: fashion... if anyone wanted Kate to step out of the box, well, me thinks she delivered. She looks great here. And the shoes are perfect with this dress.
