Meghan Markle and Harry Hold Hands at Tennis

Monday, September 25, 2017

Well, we thought we'd see these two together, and here they are! Prince Harry and his beautiful girlfriend Meghan Markle were hand-in-hand today to watch the wheelchair tennis competition at the Invictus Games:

Meghan is looking chic and relaxed in skinny jeans, a crisp white blouse and matching leather flats and bag. According to What Meghan Wore, the bag is from Everlane.

They look so comfy and in love and proud of each other. These two are rooting for tennis, and we are rooting for them. :)

  1. Meghan looks beautiful and they both exude happiness, however I can't help but feel this outfit is a bit too casual for the occasion. Maybe dark jeans without the holes would have been a better look.

    1. I have to agree. She looks like she just got out of bed. Could have made a bit more effort. They do make a cute couple though and it was interesting to watch them interact. They have been much much of a mystery couole than W&K ever were.

    2. Way to casual IMO. Also the way she sits. It doesn't matter now but once she marries she should be careful. I suppose she will be coached.

    3. She looks totally chavvy - ripped jeans are cheap, nasty and not one bit classy

      Delete
    4. I have to agree on the too casual opinion. She isn't in Hollywood and she knows the world's cameras are trained on her. A little consideration for her future role, if that's what happens, needs some attention. Common sense goes a very long way and you don't need a royal protocol advisor to tell you that ripped jeans are best left for home.

I don't believe they are secretly engaged and a part of me wonders if this week of being "the official girlfriend" in the spotlight isn't a bit of a test to see how well she handles herself through it all. I know all of the arguments that she's an actress and already a public figure but this is very different because this is being a diplomat at the very top of the chain. No personal opinions, no getting fussed while the media is in her face, no behavior as ammunition for the press to use against herself or the BRF. As an American I can say that I've never thought an American would make a good member of the BRF. We have too many strong opinions and we tend to speak our minds. The first blush of a romantic involvement during courtship and early marriage is no match for forever.

    5. Agreed. Too casual. I know the holes and fray are "in" right now but just too sloppy.

      Delete
    6. Have to agree with Anon 5:31 - bit chavvy for me too. Causual is ok, but rough street casual not. No ripped jeans and a bit neater on top would have made a world of difference.

Also Anon 6:07 has a good point in regards to the lime light. What you get as an actress will not be the same as what you get in London and the press interest there. They will be merciless in comparison. I also agree that I do not think an American is the best partner. You do not have the same sensibilities as English or even those of British colonial based societies. Sadly, I think her choice of clothes today is a nod to this point.

      Delete
    7. Totally agree, for such a big moment she dressed way too casual.....Disappointing!!! Could have worn pants or dark jeans and definitely NO HOLES or FRAY handing off the bottom. What was she thinking??????

      Delete
    8. As a Californian, I wouldn't think this was too casual for a sporting event. She did dress up for the ceremonial part. I think both outfits are just the sort of thing one would expect from a TV star, and she looked comfortable and confident in both.

      Delete
    9. But why does she need the British Press? She and Harry can frankly do what they want. She may or may not continue an outside career, but she does not need the British Press that follows the Royals to advance her acting career, and she and Harry can do what they want just like Princess Margaret....

      Delete
    10. This may be a duplicate. Meghan and Harry do not need to care about the British Royal Press. If she wants to continue as an actress her press will come from other places, she and Harry can do as they want just like Princess Margaret and be just fine. What will happen if the British Royal Press and public turn on her??? Seriously. I say good for them enjoy.

      Delete
    11. Two possibilities: she dressed as she is used to, not trying to please the public or the RF, not even thinking how it would be analysed. The other, it was a provocation, a defying gesture, meaning she won't abide by rules.
I don't want to read too much into it but she lost an opportunity IMO. She could have worn a casual but more polished outfit, that wouldn't antagonise anybody.

    13. Anon 6:07 if you are worried that an American might not fit into the BRF because she might have strong opinions or speak her mind, how do you feel about Prince Philip?

      Delete
    14. I am not 6:07 but I admire Prince Philip, not at all because of his strong opinions or the fact that he sometimes speaks his mind but for his loyalty, sense of duty, sacrifice to his wife's country and for his sense of humor. He has nothing in common with Meghan.

      Delete
    15. I don't think anyone knows enough at this point to accurately judge Meghan's loyalty, sense of duty or sacrifice at this point. Anon 6:07 implied that a person who has strong opinions and/or speaks his or her mind would not make a "good member of the BRF." Prince Philip has been known for decades for his candidly voiced opinions in any variety of settings. If he could do it and be a successful partner to the Queen I'm not sure how the "rule" for being a good member of the BRF is be quiet and keep your opinions to yourself - it simply isn't a trait found in many members of the family!

      Anon 3:17

      Delete
    16. Prince Philip has been strongly criticised for speaking his mind and he is considered a good member of the family in spite of it not because of it. He has earned the respect of the nation for other reasons. The rule of being quiet and not giving a personal opinion is a political rule, not a family one. They cannot be seen as having a political preference. It is essential to be able to be neutral and to keep personal opinions to oneself. If Meghan is not able to do it, she won't be a good representative of the UK.10:26

    17. How does Charles' work on environmental causes and Williams refusal to accept ivory fit into that strict rule Anon 1:28? How do you know that Meghan will not become less vocal about certain opinions when/if she joins the BRF?

      Delete
    18. environmental causes are not political (except in the US, I heard) They rank with health, sport and social care in the non-polemic causes. There was a time when Charles concern with conservation was seen as a bit ridiculous, that is all.

      Delete
    19. Environmental concerns definitely can have a political impact if there are economic effects from certain environmental actions. Halting the harvesting of ivory and certain types of trees, controlling fishing, etc (good ideas IMO)  does have economic effects on some fairly poor countries. Healthcare is also political *outside the US.* Otherwise we'd hear WK&H campaigning (as part of the HT work) against the NHS's unacceptably long wait times for mental health therapy services (often months, years for children)

I think it is kind of tacky for a supposed official public appearance. But since it is meghan wearing the jeans no one will complain because they will say its style. Also I thought she said in her vanity fair article she dies not like having her freckles photishopped. She obviously must have a ltlle issue about them because she is wearing enough makeup to cover them up but I know that it's being critical of her so am waiting for all the negative comments about my comment.

    6. Upon marriage Harry would most likely be given the title of an earl or a duke just like every other member of the family. Therefore, she would be a countess or a duchess. She will NEVER be Princess of Wales because the title Prince of Wales is traditionally reserved for the heir to the throne. Unless it would be awkward because of Diana, William and Kate will inherit the titles Prince and Princess of Wales upon Charles ascending to the throne. Time for some people to educate themselves on these things before saying something silly in public!

    6. The act of appointing a Regent did not disappear with the end of the Tudor reign. Should William become incapacitated in any way before George is old enough to take the throne a Regent would be appointed by Parliament. It would be Harry as the next most senior royal in the line of succession over the age of 21. Kate would become a Counsellor of State. However, at this time, Harry has not been officially appointed as such because there is no need.

  8. I'm being sarcastic in my comments but alot of people on social media are referring to Meghan as Queen Meghan and Princess Meghan. Even read an article by someone wishing Meghan would be titled Princess of Wales. I know how the titles work but there are just way too many people who don't understand and automatically assume or believe that Meghan will be Queen or Princess. A lit of people also commented that Harry should be King. But I think this comes from the excitement for Harry.

  9. Glad to see H & M out together. This makes the interview she gave very understandable. She was setting the world up for exactly what we are seeing and will continue to see this week.

Don't care for the casual attire on Ms. Markle though. Can you imagine if Kate wore ripped and frayed jeans to anything? She'd be crucified. Different strokes I guess, but I think a little more respect to Harry's position was in order for this historic occasion.

And my remark is strictly about the fashion. I love H & M's story and hope it continues forever.

    1. Kate has indeed worn 'torn' denim for an event, see here: http://www.katesclothes.com/outfit/kate-lupo-scouts/

Whether she was crucified I cannot recall. I can already tell that comparisons of the two women are going to get old. I will note that I agree with you - I wouldn't wear torn denim to a work event and I believe in being a bit 'over' rather than 'under' dressed for an occasion, but this isn't work and Meghan is wearing what she's comfortable with. And she looks great, her style is closer to mine than Kate's is and I'm excited to follow her.

I'm in the group who thinks they were engaged in Africa and then W&K threw a wrench in their plans to announce by having to announce baby #3. No one's fault, and I think now they'll wait a bit longer for it.

      Delete
    2. I agree the jeans seem too casual. But remember when Kate was just the girlfriend she wore things like that satin halter & hot pants (skating event), midriff baring tops, and that super low-cut black day dress (Issa I think) open almost to the waist in front. I think there is a big difference between GF and member of the BRF!

      Delete
    3. I don't think they waited because of baby 3. I think they are waiting until the invictus games are over because they don't want to overshadow the event.

      Delete
    4. SM. I respect your opinion. I do. But I have to disagree with the references to Kate. The jeans she wore to the scouts was as a volunteer. She was not with William and it was not in any way a media event. This was. Second, the jeans Kate wore were "worn in". They were not deliberately ripped and certainly not the whole knee. Third. This was a historic occasion that could not possibly have been lost on Meghan. This was her first public outing with Prince Harry and for him it was a big media event. So I disagree that you can compare what Kate wore as GF to what Meghan is wearing here for this first public media event. It may not have been official, but it was media huge. So I agree that she may be stylish, but not appropriate in my very humble opinion.

      Delete
    5. I think that what is appropriate and what is not is slowly changing. Sure there are limitations but if Meghan was not dating Harry and she wore those jeans, no one would care. You have to remember she is (still) an American actress, and not yet a member of the BRF. I personally hope that if she does become a member, she won't change her style. She would be such a refreshing change to that family. Sure kate and William are great but so by the book. Meghan will definitely be an important figure to all women of colour. She's my favorite actress on suits (long before harry) and I look forward what she will contribute to the BRF.

      Delete
    6. Jane I agree with you. Stylish and fashionable, yes, but not appropriate or elegant. Riped jeans are better left to teenagers.

      Delete
    7. Jane and lj - I actually agree with both of you. lj, I think that at this point they're waiting at least until the games are over to announce any engagement because they want the focus to be on the veterans (as it should be), but there was potentially a window where they could have announced but that window was closed by baby #3 and now is not open again.

Jane, those are good points! I think it's also how I would have seen it if I were Meghan and I'd have skipped the rips in my denim. Agree with the comment above me that says that these are stylish and fashionable but not 'elegant.' Women don't always have to be elegant though. So overall it's not what I'd wear but it doesn't change my opinion of Meghan I guess. I don't see it as a faux pas.

      Delete
    8. Dress for the job to which you aspire.

In a sense, she is being auditioned for the part of the wife of a senior royal in the BRF. Would she have worn this as an actress to audition for the part of a BRF princess?

Any professional actresses among FBTB commenters who could answer that? I really don't know what is acceptable now. I do think it is not just a matter of what part (wife)but also for whom?(BRF) Broadway hit or off-off-off Broadway effort.

The plunging neckline at a sports event...with other high profile women in very modest day time dress..
I'm not sure what Meghan's trying to communicate here, but she's not totally clueless; she must have known her outfit would cause a big reaction and controversy. anon1

    3. As an American, we study history prior to 1492 (and after for other countries) which frequently involves monarchies; where the oldest, generally male, child ascends to the throne. While some Americans likely do not realize that British law has changed, and Charlotte is now in line after George, I think it's safe to say that the majority recognize that William is the oldest and therefore his oldest child is next in line. And for anyone that still doesn't grasp that, tabloid headlines at the grocery checkout that read something like "How Kate is Raising the Future King," should help to beat the point over their heads.

    4. I see your point Gina, but one of the more common supermarket tabloid headlines I've seen recently in my part of the US is "Queen Elizabeth names Will and Kate King and Queen." So if my knowledge of succession in the British monarchy depended on tab headlines I'd be woefully misinformed!

I love this blog and wish it were a safer place to post these days.

    2. I think one problem with an anonymous commenter making that remark is that in any month in the last two years, some anonymous or other commenter was making remarks that hinted at possible pregnancy. Could have been you; could have been someone else. It gets old.

Personally, with there being such wide-spread publicity that Kate would not have a third child, I tried to ignore the new haircut, lack of a tan and the appearance of gray hairs---the extra Kate/ William chemistry, and finally the peplums and the elasticized waistlines--the red tour dress and the Diana garden ones-- and weight gain. And yes, the increased happy face and glow. Her remark over the baby toy conflicted with her show of supposed alcohol consumption on the last tour and confused the heck out of me. If it was a pap shot on the streets or if she was tromping around the countryside, that's one thing. It feels disrespectful to me, and one of the reasons I'm desperately hoping they aren't engaged. I don't see how an American actress, whose career thus far has hinged on self-promotion (in a very different way than the BRF promotes itself), will be able to make the kind of sacrifices required for the job. Even her charity work feels very staged to me, again, in a different way than the BRF.
I'm so not looking forward to this ride...
    Hope I'm wrong!!!!

    1. Well, here's an idea....unbuckle your seatbelt now and get off this ride because it is making you feel queasy. And, toodle-ooo!

    2. She chooses ripped jeans. So... yay!

Shows how secure their love has developed. Also the BRF have ady vetted her, and pretty sure Harry can spot a fake.

    3. Yes you are wrong

    4. 9:23 I totally agree with you.

    5. Maybe he life to date doesn't seem "like the BRF" because it hasn't been and there was no way she could have anticipated it might ever be. The BRF is unique and unless born into or realizing at a very early age (Kate) that youogjt become part of it I am not sure who else might love a "BRF" lifestyle that would meet your standards. When people complain Meghan isn't "BRF" enough I wonder if they are honestly aware of how actual members of the BRF have acted.

  21. My thoughts on the jeans are duly noted.......but a crisp white poplin shirt is always a home run!!!!

  26. She looks neat! They both look very happy. Bravo I say.

  27. Love the "husband " shirt and the breezy California style. I like the jeans too, just not for such an occasion as this. With such heavy media coverage it reads more sloppy than fashionable. I like the color tone on the bag and shoes but I don't like real leather and wish the pieces were more animal friendly fashion. They are beautiful couple though and yes I think they are already engaged :) . Just my opinion !

  28. Can't say I like the torn jeans, but why should I? I am 82 (almost) and when I first wore trousers, eyebrows were lifted.
She looked beautiful and comfortable with Harry. For her, this was a big occasion. Having avoided the press for over a year, coming out in public could have been rather daunting, so dressing comfortably was sensible.
Doubtless she will not wear ripped jeans at Trooping the Colour; the Garter Ceremony or Ascot.
I hope she makes Harry happy and fits into the trio with their work. If she does that, I hope the Royal family and the country, will welcome her with open arms.

  29. I love her style. This is a casual event and this outfit is great for it. I love Kate and I love Meghan. Two different and gorgeous woman that found their happiness in the hard world of royalty. Kate's style is always criticized as boring and old and now the jeans of Meghan... I love Kate's classy style and the glamour of Meg. I cant wait too see them in the future work together!

  30. I love her style too - she is not Kate - she is her own woman with her particular flair for clothes. To me her outfit is relaxed, modern and confident - last time I checked slightly ripped and frayed jeans were on trend and certainly not chav-like. She does not owe anything to anyone as of yet and is right to be her own person while she hopefully still can.

It's amazing to see the two of them together - I have high hopes - ps Jean from Lancs, you coulda knocked me over with a feather - you in my mind were my age (30 something something ;)!)

  31. SO happy for them! I'm just over the moon for both of them. Harry is such a lovely person - the People's Prince, IMO. He has matured so much and does so very much for everyone he meets - his smile, his energy, his totally positive, jolly attitude - it is delightful! And Meghan, wow. What a wonderful woman. She is so smart and fearless. so kind and compassionate - they will make the best married couple ever, and imagine their children! I can't wait to the announcement and the wedding. I wish them both the best and most beautifully happy life! xoxoxo From Portland, Oregon USA

  32. Meghan likes to give hints. Like the Instagram pic of spooning bananas, with one winking.
Maybe the Husband shirt, worn with Mother jeans is a message. The protective huge tote on the right and the blousey tuck-in on the left are clever.
This very charming woman might be a a bit of a rebel.

  33. Harry would be very lucky to have Megan, she is very donna to earth and people who have met her in person say there is no difference in the way she behaves in private- before and after becoming Harry's girlfriend. That says everything to me. If she is together with Harry it's because of how she feels, not who he is. Nothing else matters (including slightly torn jeans, which are, by the way, perfectly acceptable at sports es in North America when you are a private person). Since they didn't sit in the Royal Box, they were like everyone else. I feel positive that Megan didn't change her style and continues to be the same person that Harry fell in love with. Instead of judging her jeans, we should certainly be excited that Harry has found a lady who makes him happy (which is undeniable). I truly hope that this will last and they continue to be who they are, not to be even slightly compared to William and Kate.

  36. The picture of Meghan and Harry "holding hands" gives me pause since his hand is open.

That same thing happened to me once, and was the first indication that a relationship was over--when I grabbed his hand and he left his open instead of grasping mine.

    It's the little things...

    1. Are you looking at video or a still shot? Unless he kept his hand open for more than the split second that photograph was taken in I am not sure how you can draw such a conclusion.
