New Video Features Princess Kate on Behalf of Anna Freud Centre

Monday, September 18, 2017

There are two things I always want on my birthday, and one of them is an appearance from the Duchess of Cambridge. That almost never happens, although it did in 2015! This year I completely discounted any possibility, for obvious reasons, but birthdays are full of surprises!

The Anna Freud Centre, of which Kate is patron, released a new video promoting wellbeing and mental health, and the introduction features Kate! It is short and sweet, as is pretty par for the course with Kate, but she presents so well.

I am racking my brain, but I don't think Kate has ever done a video with a debut ensemble. Following that pattern, this is a recycle from one of my favorite boutique labels, Eponine London. Kate debuted this cobalt blue coat-dress on January 11th of this year. It was her first ensemble of 2017 and may or may not be making the "Best of" 2017 list come December. ;)

That event got extra points for also featuring Prince William and the darling dynamic between our favorite two royals. We should caption this "Baby by the End of the Year of Bust."

In the video released today, it looks like Kate is also wearing her sapphire and diamond drops. Kate pairs these with blue ensembles with regularity (pictured below in Luton wearing the L.K. Bennett Lasa dress), and they are some of my favorite. Plus, sapphire is the September birthstone, so it's appropriate for a September 18th appearance...in my mind. :)

Every year on my birthday I am so filled wth gratitude for all the good in my life and for the people who fill it with love and happiness - my family and my friends. The community of readers here on the blog certainly qualify in my mind as virtual friends, even if we have never met!  You all have been such a blessing to me over the years I have been blogging about Kate. It's so fun to create this space, and that is almost entirely because so many of you care enough to drop by. Thank you for being part of a 28th year that was overflowing with blessings. With a third baby Cambridge on the way, I know this next year will be a wonderful royal year--and the perfect final year of my twenties. :)

Love,

Jane

  4. It looks like the video was shot at the same day she was wearing the whole ensemble. same hairstyle, same earrings and the same place I guess.

  5. Everyone take a long look at these pictures. She looks pinch, too thin, and frail. In a two or three months, she will look healthy and fit. Pregnancy does Kate wonders and I hope she keeps a little extra weight on her once the baby is born. I can't believe that she can't see the huge improvement that a little extra weight does for her.

    1. Comments like this are so offensive and such a double standard. While I am quite certain you meant not harm, the fact that folks think it's acceptable to criticize someone for what they believe is "too thin" and yet it is certainly not unacceptable to mention the heavier weights of some women .... it's a constant double standard! Let us not forget that the comments are equally hurtful. Whether thin or heavy, no person wants to have their weight as a topic of point.

    2. Thankyou for saying this. I've been tall and thin my whole life and forever get comments. If I eat healthy it's "no wonder you are so thin" if I eat a piece of cake it's "how can u do that and stay thin". And it's not said kindly. And to u just wouldn't say it to an overweight person. ...cos that would be rude. Kate is fit and b healthy. Leave her alone.

  6. Happy Birthday Jane! I rarely comment but know that I read your blog religiously - and am so thankful for your fabulous reporting on all things Duchess Kate. You are a fantastic writer and always lay out your pieces so elegantly. I know you are going to be a very successful lawyer some day soon, but I hope you never stop blogging about our dear Duchess!

  7. Happy Birthday Jane and many more ๐ŸŽ‚

Great little introduction that Kate taped. I think this is the best she has done. She did not look nervous and spoke well.

  8. Happy Birthday Jane!! Cheers to a year full of wonderful. Your blog is my favorite of all the kate blogs! Your writing is so good, the blog has so many great tidbits other do not. I could go
On and on. On to Kate. I am not thrilled with this coat dress. Something about the belt. Too high on waist?? Also, Kate needs to go back over her wedding interview so she remembers how her voice sounds. The posh vocals have to go. I love our Duchess, but sometimes she sounds like she has a mouthful of marbles.

    1. Amen ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป to the voice comments! I don't get it. To allow yourself to be so influenced by your new environment?!? No, she's trying on purpose to sound different. And it's, frankly, stupid.

    2. Have any of you seen The Kings Speech?

      Delete
    3. Totally agree re the fake sounding accent. Maybe it's a sign of her earnest efforts to do her best in this job? Misguided, but endearing perhaps. Her delivery has improved a bit anyway.

    4. I have seen parts of the movie. Are you thinking the RF puts a strong emphasis on pronunciation because of the Queen's father's stuttering?

Kate almost sounds like she's playing a part when contrasted to how she sounded on the engagement interview. Terribly creepy, like royal Stepford wife.

    5. I like her voice. Is her accent so very fake? I think it is because she is reading. Your voice doesn't sound the same as when you are speaking

      Delete
    6. No, anon 2:29, her voice has completely changed. Even when she's not reading. In the doc about the Queen's jubilee, she was hardly understandable in that interview. Very high, practically breathless... I remember that was the first people noticed. It was odd and striking, the change when compared to the engagement interview just a few years before (1-2 years).

      Delete
    7. I would expect her to sound different six years later; she had to be a bundle of nerves during the
engagement interview. Although I think she handled it quite well. But a surreal experience none-the-less for someone transitioning from being a private individual to a public figure.

    8. While I agree that her speech has certainly changed, I rather enjoy it. I also respect the effort that she has made in how she chooses to present herself. In a society where everyone exposes so much of their bodies and wears skimpy clothing, the Duchess has chosen to be more polished and refined. In a world where slang and mushy speech is everywhere, the Duchess has chosen a definitive and classical tone. I absolutely love the direction she is taking! It shows great courage to be a classy trendsetter.

      Delete
    9. I agree 4:35!!!!

      Delete
    10. She's not being a "classy trendsetter" in her new ridiculous accent. She sounds like she decided that she didn't fit in and now has a fake, phony accent.

Mind you, she never had an accent that needed improving. Do you really think Carole Middleton would have raised a child with a bad accent? No. So this change seems even more ridiculous.

And blindly defending the indefensible, like this new voice, is silly. That's why people laugh at some royal "followers" - they'll follow and defend anything Kate does, which is immature and infantile.

This new voice is beneath Kate.

      Delete
    11. Anon 11:02, I think you make some good points about Carole raising Kate with a good accent, etc, and I certainly think you can argue that Kate's voice has changed and even that you don't like the change, but I don't think we want to go so far as to say that other opinions are indefensible or that those who espouse those opinions are immature or infantile. I don't think it strengthens your position to attempt to discredit your fellow posters by pulling in the "royal watchers are crazy" card. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and the best response is a strong argument, not an ad hominem attack.

      Delete
    12. IMO the change in her accent is not very drastic, but let's say it was. Why is it beneath her? If for reasons of her own or because she was advised to, or because she though she could better fulfill her role or because as you say she thought she didn't fit in, she made a conscious effort to change her accent, I say good for her. It isn't an easy thing to do and one that proves she isn't lazy.Carole may have raised her like a queen but I am sure she has told her one can always improve. I am sure she doesn't believe she has taught her children all there is to know. In your eyes Kate's accent didn't need improving, and she fitted perfectly, but perhaps she is the best judge?
And I don't think she is a kind of traitor to her family and her class or even to herself because she has changed her voice. That argument is somewhat classist, like " don't try to fake it, we know where you come from and you are not one of them "
If on the other hand, it wasn't a conscious decision, and her voice changed like it does for all of us when our surroundings change, where is the problem?

      Delete
    13. 11:28,

Those that don't like Kate's new accent are hardly saying we know where she comes from!!! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

You are missing the whole point. This is NOT an improvement, this was not bettering herself. That is the point. Her accent sounded very posh before. She has taken it too an extreme, like a dieter going into anorexia. Her accent is now extreme, her words barely understandable when she speaks. That is the point.

Have you ever heard Diana speak? Very posh but clearly understandable. Kate is showing extreme insecurity by doing this to her voice. It is like someone with over the top plastic surgery and then a defense of wanting to improve themselves.

There is improving and then there is off the chart crazy, this voice is crazy.

      Delete
    14. 2:44 I like your analogy to the dieter...I now understand better what you mean but I still don't feel it is so very extreme. I understand her very well and don't find her voice irritating at all. IMO the accent sounds stronger in her speaches. Perhaps she is just unsure about speaking publicly. She certainly appears to be tense. 11:28

  9. Happy Birthday with wishes for many happy returns to you, FB2B Blogger Lady! Yours is the only blog I regularly check on, so thank You for that!
The Duchess Catherine is practically a modern miracle. Her significant efforts, exampled above, generate far-reaching effects. I, for one, have great appreciation for this. She is a beautiful role model. I am enthralled by the Duchess' growing collection of garments in the cobalt blue color family - a great color and a great color for her to wear.

    1. Betsey, I certainly think so. That particular hairstyle is a pet peeve of mine...surprisingly unflattering on such a beautiful woman! Happy birthday, Jane and thanks for this fun blog!!!

    2. I think it is likely. I got this question on Twitter, too. To me, it is still a recycle and a second wear because the appearances are so distinct. At least, I will count it as a recycle, I guess other bloggers and readers could think of it as one wear. :) But, given the hairstyle, I agree with the majority that it was likely filmed that day. Thanks for the birthday messages! :)

A very happy birthday Jane, a little belated but I hope you're still celebrating! :) Thank you so much for the huge gift you've given all of us - an amazing, unique place where we can dream, talk about anything that comes to mind regarding Kate and family and fashion of course, for all of your insights into a fascinating world, for English history lessons, and for your cheerful, intelligent attitude! It's been great, I can't believe I've been following since 2011! I am still just as excited about the family as I ever was. Can't wait for Harry news! xoxo

  32. Happy birthday Jane - I agree with a previous commentator - your way with words and wisdom suggested a person far older! You are but a sapling :) - hope you enjoyed your celebrations - excitement now for the year to come ahead of your big milestone '30'!

Re accent-gate - I actually think Kate sounds fine - I do agree on the Queen's Jubilee documentary she sounded like she had been taking elocution lessons from well ..the Queen - but to me her accent is still that of just a regular (albeit upper class) Home Counties girl. I hope we get to see more of her soon - any chance perhaps of a throwback post Jane- studies permitting?! Very cheeky to ask, but I love your blog too and miss it when Kate is not out and about..
