What To Expect Now Kate is Expecting: FAQs

Monday, September 4, 2017

This morning we got the thrilling news that the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton to the majority of the fan world) is expecting her third child. After the first burst of excitement, this news is raising a lot of different questions about the next few months. Below, I have tried to answer the questions that come up all the time when Kate announces she is going to have a baby!

How Far Along Is Kate?  According to Rebecca English, she was told the Duchess is less than 12 weeks along, and that she only announced because she was not well enough to attend today's engagement. Kate fell ill with Prince George in the first few days of December and was hospitalized on the 4th of that month. The little prince was born on July 22nd. Kate announced her pregnancy with Princess Charlotte on September 8th and Charlotte was born on May 2nd. You can assume an April/May baby!

Is Kate Sick Again? Yes, the the Palace confirmed that the Duchess continues to suffer from hyperemesis gravidarum which is a serious condition that leaves her miserably ill for the majority of her time. She has needed an IV drip in past pregnancies to keep her hydrated. HG can even get worse with subsequent pregnancies. Past reports have been that Kate is completely incapacitated during the worst weeks, and Prince William has made reference to how terrible the experience is for Kate. In the past, Carole Middleton has shouldered much of the work watching George and helping William take care of Kate. The Duchess has spent time in Bucklebury at her parents home, too, while recovering.

When Will Kate Be Well Enough to Appear in Public Again? In 2012, Kate made her first public appearance ten days after she was released from the hospital. She presented at the Sports Personality of the Year Award on December 17th. The Duchess was driven to the event where she presented and was taken straight home afterward. She was at the event less than an hour. She made her first official appearance in January, about a month after her hospitalization, but didn't really return to public engagements until February. So, it was approximately two months before she was back in the swing of things. With her second pregnancy, Kate made no exceptions during her period of illness. She announced she was pregnant on September 8th and did not return to the public eye until October 21st.

What About Prince George's First Day of School? I think if it is humanly possible, she will make it. She was glitz and glamor to present at the SPOTYs, ten days after being released from a multi-day hospital stay in 2012, because she felt so passionate about the program. She has less time to pull it together for Thursday's send-off, but she also is already under world-class care and hasn't been through the same terrible dehydration. So, we have plenty of reason to be optimistic. It is a big day for George, it is a big day for Kate as a parent, and of course, it is a big day for the history books. You can be sure she will go if she is able.

Does This Mean the Fall Tour Is Canceled? Not necessarily. I expect Kate to return in time for the Christmas rush of activities at the latest. We don't know when this fall tour is scheduled to take place, where, or the duration of the tour. We can follow the pattern from Kate's pregnancy with Charlotte (announced at almost the same time in 2014, Sept. 8th) to get a sense of what might happen this time.  Assuming that Kate takes a similar period to recover, as she did with Charlotte, she will be out for all of September, all of October, and into mid-November. That would mean the tour would have to happen in mid-to-late November, or early December, which is entirely possible. Kate and William traveled to New York for a short visit in December of 2014, and it was a very successful visit. Kate was also able to fit in a flurry of Christmas events for her charities in late November and in December of that year. The Cambridges can absolutely still fit in a tour before the Christmas holiday.

Any other questions, ask and I will try to add them...

  2. George was born in July, not June. William is the June baby in that family.

  3. I would guess that she's due sometime in April, if not even late March. I'm currently 15 weeks with my third, and am due in late February. A May due date would put her at only 4-6 weeks.

    1. Hyperemesis usually hits at 4-6 weeks and can resolve or at least become more manageable about 12 weeks. So I really think she is about 6 weeks. It's also may be why she did not go to the gates with William and Harry last week. I agree with Jane on the late April early May birth.

    2. I agree with you Eva B. Maybe that infant toy was inspiration? ;)

    3. Oh I hope she is further along than 6 weeks from conception. So early.

    4. Sorry to burst the HG rose glasses but it is a severely debilitating condition. Normal morning sickness can get better by 12 weeks but usually not HG. It can last for the full pregnancy and saying it gets manageable by 12 weeks puts undue pressure and stress on those suffering from it. Speaking from experience with 3 HG pregnancies to term and having lost 25 pounds with each one. It alters your brain.

  4. She's such a strong woman, I can only imagine how debilitating her HG must be.

  5. I had wondered if all the smiles on the way to/from church a week ago meant an announcement to the royal family. They did seem unusually jolly. That is usually done after the third month. Also the rumors of hospitalization a couple weeks ago. There was also an effort several months ago to quieten pregnancy rumors, while Kate herself foiled those efforts by making that tantalizing remark in July.. The show of alcohol consumption on the recent tour, although she was actually only filmed taking a sip or two. I think there may have been a hope of keeping this news private for awhile. I think March/early April. Reporters are speculating based on previous pregnancies. This is her third. The pattern may vary. If she isn't having twins( which would finally vindicate all those twin tabloid magazine stories) I think she is close to 12 weeks. I think the time frame is usually announced later.
    Time will tell. anon1

    1. C'mon... consumption of alcohol... it would be so easy to fake it. You just lift your glass to your lips pretending you are sipping while you are NOT :). So easy.

    2. I'm enjoying reading all the blogs on this smoke filled day in MT. I think this time around she might be a little bit further along than with Charlotte at this announcement. I read that article regarding Kate's hospitalization in August. I thought it was rumors at first, but now it makes sense. Poor Kate, probably hoped that the HG wouldn't be so bad this time around. It will be interesting to guess the due date. I'm a late March baby, so I'm rooting for a early spring baby. We shall see. 😉

    3. I agree that the announcement gives the August hospitalization rumours credence. I'm guessing an early spring baby too.

  9. How far along do you think she actually is? If she is around 10 weeks, this means she was already pregnant while in Germany and I wonder how this would be possible. If she was not pregnant at the time, she is way too early in her pregnancy.. I don't know..

    1. Way too early in her pregnancy for what?

    2. For announcing the pregnancy is what she means, I believe.
It is common to wait until you are 12 weeks along, there is a high decrease statistically in misacarriages after the first trimenon is completed.
Kate HAS already announced both her pregnancies with G&C before her 12-week-mark, though. This would not be uncommon for the
palace, so I agree with Jane's calculations.

BUT I am actually quite in awe of how she/everyone risks having to give bad news/share something like that with the whole world.

Miscarriages are medically quite common, they do not necessarily reflect poor health/diet/fertility, a lot of women suffer these. So how do they take they risk announcing so early, really?

I am grateful she - as far as we know - never had to go through it of course.

    3. Yes, that is exactly what I meant, if she was not pregnant in the Poland/Germany tour, it is really a very early announcement. Also, I might be wrong of course, but I somehow recall they announced more or less the due date both with George and Charlotte (something in the lines of "the birth is expected in Summer 2013/Spring 2015"). They did not in this case. Anyway, I am super happy, wish them all the best and wish Kate a speed recovery from the monstrosities (is that how you spell it?) of HG :)

  10. Sadly, HG has cost our family two pregnancies. I realize how serious this diagnosis is and am wishing HRH a safe and happy full term. So very excited for this family. Wouldn't it be lovely if Harry and Meghan could add even more royal family excitement with a proposal! It would be all we fans could possibly handle at one time.

  11. I wonder if this one wasn't as planned (although I'm sure they try to be very mindful of this) as other since it conincides with the start for Fulk time royal duties, including a tour, and potentially a Harry engagement.

Regardless I give her lots of credit. She must love her family and be a strong person to go through HG three times.

  12. I wonder if she is actually pretty ill. It seems like they would not cancel the morning lightly after so much build up to a more busy schedule. Would it really be possible to keep a hospital stay in the summer private. They may have timed the baby with good luck to slip between the tour and fall based on their first two go rounds. They had a quiet mid August. Maybe she was wrapped up against the weather in Scotland to bundle out for an hour at church and then a swift trip home. Fans might fetishize more that first trip to school. This news adds a big import to it. They seem like a very solid family that can make the most of a great goodbye from mom at home and Dad along at the first drop off. And mom and grandma waiting when he gets back home safe and sound. I think if she is not there at the embargoed engagement tomorrow she might be pretty sick and they have been pretty clever with it so far. .

  13. I think the poor woman must be very early in this pregnancy. For a third baby, even someone as fit and slim as Kate would show a lot earlier than with previous pregnancies and the fact that she isn't at all suggests that she's still only newly pregnant. I really hope she starts to feel better and that everything goes okay because even with the best private medical care in the world, she's not going to be able to get real confirmation of how the pregnancy is going until a bit further along. To be in the public eye during this time must be so difficult.

I am thinking of her and their family and hoping she can relax and start to feel better soon. I know women who wanted more children but didn't have any because the HG was just so debilitating.

    1. Not necessarily. Everyone's body is different. I showed LATER with subsequent pregnancies than I did with my prior ones. She clearly is earlier than 12 weeks though.

  15. Harry and William were at a Grenfell Towers community support group meeting today. I assume that was the embargoed engagement that Kate was to have attended today. I believe it is one of the groups backed by their Foundation. No mention about further cancellation of engagements for Kate on KP Twitter at this point.
Harry has been in Manchester with a mental health support group follow-up after the terrorist attack there in June.
It should be obvious by now that they are seriously committed to make good on their promises of support.
KP Twitter also announced some of Williams schedule for September. The engagements include organizations to aid the homeless, addicted, and mental health support for first responders.
It is indeed shaping up to be a busy Fall for the heir to the heir. I believe, with this announcement, one can assume the stories about the Queen not condoning the pursuit of private charity interests by royals (with consequent publicity) were greatly exaggerated, to put it kindly. anon1

  16. I'm hopeful that she and Will planned this for her to get through the worst of the HG in August, and that's why her appearances this week were so firmly shared. I can't imagine that they would have done that if she were very early on, knowing her tendency to illness! It seemed to me that she was showing a bit at the Diana garden event, plus there's some speculation that Will implied Kate's around 11 weeks along, so my fingers are crossed that she's much nearer her symptoms letting up. Best of luck, Kate!

  17. I was thrilled to hear the happy news and not at all surprised to learn that Kate is pregnant. Given Kate's close knit family and W&H's bond, I believe they want a similar experience for their children.

    1. I think it's bad timing and fear that George and Charlotte are not going to get much attention. They are such young kids. Also how horrible if this new baby has the same birthday as Charlotte. Not smart of them.

      Delete
    2. I'm sorry Candice but I couldn't disagree more with you. Needing to share attention (and sometimes even birthdays!) is a part of life - and quite frankly the experience you describe might help keep G&C as "normal" as royal children might be.

      Delete
    3. Well, bad timing... for all we know they might have been trying for months without any success until recently. And an old friend of mine shares EXACTLY the same birthday with her 2 years older sister. That was a hell of a timing!

    4. I do share my birthday ( 3 years older) with my sister are love it! It was very fun growing up, we had each our cake and later a party with a lot of friends. I would call it more a gift than a frustration for a child.

  18. Jane, what do you make of the Daily Mail reporting that William says the couple will celebrate the news "next week?" The Mail is taking that as an indication that next week will mark 12 weeks and Kate will be out of the woods - do you think that's possible? I would have imagined she's far less along than that...

    1. I'm not Jane, but my take is that a sonogram may be scheduled for next week. There is some question of what William actually said. This is a complicated pregnancy with an older mother who has HG. It would be reassuring and cause for celebration to see a healthy baby on the scan. (or babies!) I think it may be the 12 week scan and that a tentative due date or month could be announced following this if all is ok.
I did not like the look on Carole's face, but then she has two other children and a husband to worry about. If that photo was taken on her way home, possibly exhausted grandma face. Maybe she had a toothache.

    2. She might also have been trying to drive carefully and not hit the photographers taking photos of her....

    3. Ha! 1:29...its been known to happen. Recently a pap was knocked down and he sued the celebrity whose car he was darting in front of. I think a very wise judge dismissed the case.

  19. You guys are scaring me with these comments! Nevertheless I think it was so cute of Kate to slip about having more babies. They knew then and they've wanted to start their family for a long time. Maybe this is the last one? 4 would be the best (4 is my dream amount) but three is beautiful. She's healthy and strong.

  20. Those are great news and I'm happy for them. I hope that everything will be allright with the baby and the pregnancy.
