Kate's Surprise Stop at Paddington Station in Orla Kiely

Monday, October 16, 2017

The best way to start a new week is with a new engagement showcasing Kate! William and Harry were due at Paddington Station this morning for a Paddington-themed Charities Forum event and happily, they didn't come alone.  To the surprise and delight of everyone, the Duchess of Cambridge joined her husband and brother-in-law, and she was absolutely glowing in a pink Orla Kiely dress.

The What & The Why & The Where

The Charities Forum was founded by William and Harry in 2006 "as a way to bring their individual charitable interests together and to explore how they could best lend their support to them all in an effective and efficient way." Kate made the duo a trio after she married William, and now all three royals work with their charities in this umbrella collaboration. Today was a Paddington-themed event at Paddington Station in London where children, nominated by various charities, were set to embark on a train-trip with members of the Paddington 2 cast.  Here, Kate sits down to chat with families involved with the Anna Freud Centre, of which she is patron:

The Labels

Kate returned to Irish designer Orla Kiely, wearing the label's Flower Fitted dress in blush. The dress is sold out but features a raised floral design, a fitted bodice, and black velvet trim. I think this must be an old season, but very little is available online about it. Polyvore reports it retailed for around $185, which seems a little on the cheap side.  In any event, Kate hasn't worn Orla K in a long time, and I am really pleased to see a new dress from her make an appearance.

Kate accessorized with her Kiki McDonough morganite drop earrings, her Mulberry Bayswater clutch, and what appear to be new, black, block-heels. MiddletonMaven has identified these shoes as Tod's Suede Block Heels:

Kate finished her look with her trusty Cartier Ballon Bleu watch.

Jane's Thoughts

I love Kate in blush. It is a shade that can wash some women out, but to me it works very well with her dark hair and eyebrows and her light tan and always pink cheeks. Kate also seems to like blush when pregnant. Her bump is definitely showing, which feels early to me, but makes this surprise appearance even more exciting!

I am thrilled that Kate made this engagement. It was not announced beforehand. She probably planned to come, but chose not to announce it in case she didn't feel up to it this morning. That's a smart move to avoid disappointing fans and sparking criticism from the more disaffected among us.

Anyone who thinks Kate isn't a good sport should watch this video. My personal comfort zone is relatively reserved, and Kate handled this energetic dance with perfect poise. I think William is wondering if she might be sick....I certainly was.

The Verdict

Big win! As I say, I love blush on Kate, and I love the Orla Kiely pieces she chooses. They are always feminine and flattering with details that set them apart from the run-of-the-mill. This dress was streamlined in its fitted-bodice and straight skirt, but with just the right amount of embellishment to make it unusual and very fun. Plus, Orla Kiely's whimsy was the prefect vibe for a Paddington-themed children's event. The block heels kept it trendy, which I loved, too. A+ to HRH.

  1. It seems that she is at the point where her good days outnumber her bad days. During my pregnancies I hit that magic point at around 13- 14 weeks (and I was just really nauseous all day, never vomited) so I am thinking....perhaps a late April due date? Catherine really looks great...love that her hair is still shortish.

    1. Yep, seems to me also that Kate is around 13-14 weeks, altho for some reason, there's been no official notice of the month she is due. And like yourself, I think April.

    2. I was thinking at the very least 12 weeks but it's probably more like 13-15, unless it is twins.. EVERYTHING has been different with this pregnancy! Time she was out, how fast she's shown, her swift comeback, she's way more active even if she's only dancing with a 🐻she looks GREAT doing it!!! Not so much the dress but it's ok!We won't know until next year and I'm very impatient!!

  2. Fantastic surprise!! I really like this dress too. I wonder if she pulled it out of her private wardrobe. The raised pattern is pretty and the pale blush contrasted with the black looks smart. It looks like the neckline dips down in the back. Chic new shoes. She must have been feeling very well today to survive that dance. I felt nauseous for her just looking at it.

  4. Beautiful outfit! Kate looks lovely, although I personally think she looks as though she's not yet feeling 100%. Brave of her to be venturing out.

  5. She looks great today! I hope we get more Duchess surprise days like this when she's feeling up to it.

The Kiki earrings from Pippa's wedding would have looked smashing with this dress, but not as appropriate for the event theme. Fingers crossed we see those again someday!

  7. I saw the video on the DM, it is the cutest thing ever!!😊

Here's the thing about Kate, I hate the dress and the hair is horrible, BUT the video makes it all perfect!

    We just love Kate!

  8. She looked absolutely smashing, that dress was perfect for the event. I hope her return to orla kiely also brings back the shorter hemlines she favoured in her last 2 pregnancies. :)

  9. She looks stunning, I love everything about this look!

Jane, do you think she might be further along in her pregnancy than we suspect? Perhaps past the 12 week mark? Or do you think that she might just show more and more with each pregnancy, like a lot of women?

    1. I don't really, no. I think the HG kicks in around the same time. I'm no medical professional, but I think that is what I have read and that's what makes sense to me. She certainly is showing more this time than she did at this general stage in past pregnancies, but another reader made the point that with subsequent pregnancies your muscles aren't quite what they were. That or its twins??? :)

      Delete
    2. Also, much just depends on the clothes and angles of photos and general weight. Plus every pregnancy is different. If you took two women at the same age and a first baby and same fitness, one might show earlier just because of hormones, swelling etc. My mother had 6 children and she did show differently from pregnancy to pregnancy but not more so as she went along, it just varied each time. She also had a totally flat stomach after 6. At this stage given the size of the baby not sure the muscle tone matters till the baby is a bit bigger. I am not an expert though, just personal experience. I showed the same with my second as my first until much later in the pregnancy, post 7 months and the second kid was a much bigger baby.

      Delete
    3. I think that poor muscle tone resulting in lack of abdominal support might apply to most of us, but I doubt she started this pregnancy with floppy muscles, given her general health and fitness state. Please refer to her Trooping photos and others prior to June. And--who can forget those photos of her a few months after--George, was it?_ leaping into the air to swat a ball, wearing heels!, and revealing apparently very unflabby abdominals.anon1

Certainly could be twins. An exciting idea, for sure. It may also account for KP's not announcing due month yet. (Surely not because of a possible loss of the baby due to the HG. Zara was past the three month stage.) If KP announces her just ending first trimester, twins would likely be the obvious conclusion. They may wish to keep that news private for some reason. She really did not look much different at three months or so with Charlotte than George, that I can see. If it is a matter of poor muscle support we would have seen this with Charlotte as well, to some degree.
I think a possibility is that she wore clothing that better masked her shape, both earlier in this pregnancy---peplums, full skirts, high or elasticized waists- and early in past pregnancies. Now, she appears after six weeks in form-fitting clothing, no longer masked. It could very well be a matter of illusion.
But I vote for twins or a late March/early April singleton.

Now I feel icky. I will excuse my invasive speculation by noting that pregnancy is a universally intriguing topic from small town PTAs about a fellow member to fan blogs about those in the world's view. Plus, they have really cute kids. AND I think her general appearance and fashion peak during pregnancy. anon1
      PS
I AM a medical professional but my field was not Obstetrics and my Obstetrics education was well before HG was as well known and studied as it is today. I do think Jane is correct that HG develops a pattern with an individual and likely appears about the same point in each pregnancy. I just think Kate could have been dealing with it for some time prior to announcement and attempting to at least get through the Diana observances.
The HG may not have popped up magically after the last Diana event. She may have reached the extent of her ability to go on without proper rest and comprehensive treatment. Pure speculation, of course, among many speculations here. anon1

      Ok, I'll weigh in here:-)
Yes, most women show earlier with each successive pregnancy. The hormones of pregnancy relaxes smooth muscle to allow the uterus accommodate the growing fetous, however it is not specific to just the uterus so no matter how toned the abdominal muscle are it loses it support and since it has been "conditioned" before it knows exactly what to do.
As to the HG, it usually starts when those same hormones become established in the mothers blood stream - usually about 6 weeks. Once the pregnancy is established, HG can then ease off as the ratio of the hormone change and therefore becomes more manageable. I agree with Jane's earlier assessment as to her due date being about the same general time as for Charlotte

      Delete
    6. There is a difference between smooth and striated muscle. You are referring to two kinds. The uterine muscles and the abdominal wall muscles. Hormones that effect smooth muscle do not necessarily effect striated muscle. The lining of blood vessels and uterus have smooth muscle. The abdominal muscles are striated. If I remember correctly. Some medications, for example blood pressure meds, act on smooth muscle in the lining of blood vessels. Pitocin, used for inducing labor, causes the uterus to contract-- but I need to refresh my memory on that. anon1

    7. Thank you, Certified Nurse Midwife. I don't have the occupation to back me up as you do but this is exactly what I've learned from my experience with our rather large family/extended family. Your body just knows what to do when those hormones kick in and does its thing. We've only had one person in the family with extreme HG like Kate has and their pattern has also followed what we've seen with Kate and what you've described.

    5. OR...the media just happened to choose that quote this time, among a number, I suspect. She spoke with quite a few people, especially children. I do think the various forums pick and choose which quotes to publish. This time, she was lucky enough to be pregnant and has a relatively friendly press, resulting in a quote that makes Kate look good. A little cynical viewpoint, I admit. Following Kate press (and a few college courses) may be responsible for my skepticism regarding the media. anon1

  11. What an uplifting surprise for a Monday morning! Kate isn't the only one making an effort. Appreciate the post, Jane.
Richard Palmer included a shot of Kate's face in repose. As is often true when Kate has been ill, her center-stage camera-ready face differs considerably from her down-stage unguarded expression. I thought her eyes looked tired or strained with swelling and there were deep lines etched in her face. Again---lighting? I only mention this because there seems to be an online element determined to deny she suffers from HG. It went from: not as severe this time, to-she recovered faster, to- her symptoms not being severe enough for true HG. Her physicians have also been the Queen's doctors. I think they are qualified to diagnose HG. We don't know where she is in her pregnancy, how long she had had symptoms even before the KP Diana event, or anything of what has gone on behind the doors of KP. I think Harry and William's much more relaxed demeanor today compared to last week, as far as the available photos I've seen, may indicate light at the end of a tunnel.

Sorry, but remarks speculating and hinting Kate isn't really ill and has been trying to escape work are the cruelest and most unfair of all the Kate/work debate. I so appreciate coming here and finding
    a generally understanding voice. anon1

I like the dress and the designer, except the bird dress, maybe. I have read blush, peach, pale pink...doesn't KP release that info anymore? It may have been with the design site info and I missed it. It certainly isn't peach. Again, it may depend on lighting, device, etc. I think Jane's calling it blush-color is closest, at least for my device.
I think there was a blue skirt, very short, as well that I liked. anon1

  12. I love the dress. I agree with Jane, Kate's dark hair and brows, and those lovely pink cheeks, make it work for her. As for her baby bump, I think it's showing sooner because this is her third baby. I think she might be due late April, early May.

  13. Since her marriage Kate has evidently kept to a rigorous diet and exercise routine. However, leading up to Pippa’s wedding, Kate seemed to have been the leanest she has ever been. When Kate visited the victims of the Glenfell tower, Jane as well as others commented that she had seemingly gained weight. Throughout June and July, especially their tour of Poland and Germany, Kate’s clothes seemed a bit snugger than usual. Based on these pictures, I believe that Kate is four months pregnant – meaning that she will likely deliver in March.

If Kate has passed the 3 month-mark, shouldn’t the Palace have announced the expected month that she will deliver ? Is it usually the Duchess who during one-on-one interactions states her due date or does the Palace usually officially announce this ?

    3. You are correct anon 9:58. Kate didn't visit the Grenfell victims. The only visit I'm aware of related to the recent London tragedies was the visit to a hospital in June after the early June terrorist attack. If she looked "fuller" in mid-June I doubt it was from a pregnancy. That would mean she got pregnant in May. That seems very unlikely to me as she was seen an awful lot in July and apparently was not at all ill. If she looked fuller I think the suit she wore for the hospital visit had shrunk a bit from cleaning as it was one she'd worn before.

    4. I couldn't have visited the Grendall victims either. I would have been sobbing and had to be sedated, seriously. I know as Queen, you have to go to everything, but I'm very tender hearted and it would destroy me.

BTW, I know no one is saying she should have visited them, I'm just adding this.

The dress is so pretty, I love it! I am so glad Kate has worn Orla Kiely again, her grey dress with the pleated skirt and black flower embellishments remains one of my favourite dresses Kate has ever worn :)

And her little bump is so cute, can't wait for baby #3! I have a feeling it will be a boy, but I am secretly hoping for another girl... we shall see!

Any idea when the palace will finally release Kate's due month? I think a royal reporter (Emily Andrews if I remember correctly) tweeted thst Kate was already 13 weeks pregnant and didn't they always release this info when she was at 12 weeks? Or am I confusing something?

  18. Had to take a time out to try and figure out what was niggling at the back of my mind, re Kate's fashion choice. And there it was! A Jackie Kennedy moment--picture Kate without a middle part, her hair backcombed and pouffed, and stick a pillbox hat, matching her dress, perched toward the back of her head. (I cannot, however, picture Jackie dancing with Paddington Bear; she was far too much the snob.)

In any case, this Kiely dress, circa 2013, works for Kate and looks lovely with Bear's fur. It must be noted, however, that either Paddington was a short bear or Kate is rather tall; had she worn a pillbox, it might've gone flying--not that I'd mind; Kate was enjoying herself!

    Hats off to Paddington Bear.

  19. Catherine looks absolutely fantastic today. This is one of her best looks of 2017 in my humble opinion. The cut, colour, print of this Orla dress is lovely on her. The short hair cut is great too - she looks as she did at Wimbledon when she debuted that shorter cut in a lovely polka dot dress (another best of 2017!). Catherine's really long locks were absolutely dating her. She's still so young and looks much better with a fresher hair cut.

I am guessing she's 15 weeks or so along with the size of her tummy and think it's an early to mid-April due date. Strange that the Palace hasn't yet announced the due "month". Maybe William and Catherine are a bit apprehensive after Zara's tragic second trimester miscarriage last year. Let's hope all is well!

  22. HG through the ages has attracted a lot of negative speculation (disbelief and mom-shaming etc) both inside and outside medical circles. Thankfully progress is being made but they still don’t understand it very well. I would imagine at this point they have a better handle on treatment that works for her and perhaps what we are seeing is a healthier pregnancy weight than before. I’m going to vote for team healthier weight + April as it is reasonable and optimistic. ;) Part of the diagnosis of HG is weight loss and failure to adequately gain weight while pregnant. The treatment for severe cases can involve a feeding tube; one can only imagine the public reaction to that detail (if applicable). Ordinary mortals often are hospitalized for that but one imagines alternative arrangements could be made given sufficient resources. Note I am not on the physician side for this. I was however a researcher on a study that involved HG so I wound up learning about it. The status of the medical literature on the subject as of 2005 was really poor. Suffice it to say there has been a tendency to interpret HG as “psychological” (a default stance when docs feel clueless) but the better data available now suggests it is not. I hope more research funding becomes available. Most women who have this are in a very tough position and can’t be off work or off child care responsibilities for 12 weeks before the pregnancy has even advanced.

  32. Hi Jane, your blog is my favourite Kate blog, but I am a little sad to read you commenting on Kate's body shape and offering your commentary (Her bump is definitely showing, which feels early to me) which I don't really think is necessary or appropriate. She has already told us she is pregnant, and everyone's shape changes at different times even if not pregnant but when they are, depending on their size, what they have eaten and how many babies they have had, they will show differently. I don't think it needs drawing attention to or commenting on, even in the context of blog dedicated to her style and appearances in public.
