Norway/Sweden Tour Announced

Tuesday, October 17, 2017

We finally got our announcement this morning about the Cambridges' autumn travel plans, and the news is surprising! Kensington Palace announced that William will travel to Finland alone at the end of November, and that William and Kate together will tour Sweden and Norway in "early 2018."

Richard Palmer reported that aides have said even if Kate is feeling better (which it looks like she is!), there is no possibility she can travel at that time. Since Kate traveled to New York City at approximately the same point when pregnant with Princess Charlotte,
it is hard not to wonder what is different this time. I don't want to add too much fuel to the rumor fire, or to over indulge in complete speculation, but it does make me wonder again if Kate might possibly be pregnant with twins? There are plenty of other reasons not to travel, of course. She may have found New York far more taxing than she anticipated, or with George and Charlotte older and George in school, there may be family commitments she is unwilling to miss--school play or holiday events. Her doctors may just be playing it extra cautious this time around. Who knows, but that's the scoop for the moment. No autumn trip for Kate after all, but a visit to Norway & Sweden in the New Year!

  1. I'm skeptical it's twins because I think it would even less advisable to travel later in the pregnancy and supposedly they're still planning on the trip in the winter. My preferred conspiracy theory is that it's because they don't want to overshadow the Meghan/Harry engagement announcement that will surely be coming in late November/December!! :)

    1. I like that one also!
Hmmmmm, a November announcement, maybe a May wedding? After the new baby is born? Or would they do a smaller wedding in Scotland? But I am getting ahead of myself!

    2. A May wedding would be lovely!! :)

    3. Tick tock... But I still say twins!! Jane please let us speculate and do a name game!!??

    4. KP just tweeted a minute ago that they are expecting "a baby" in April 2018. So no twins.

    5. This is my favorite theory ever! I hope Harry and Meghan announce soon!

    6. I hate to be the bearer of practicality but it is more likely because pregnancy after age 35 is always considered "high risk" in the early going even if you've had previous full term pregnancies. That doesn't mean that millions of women haven't had healthy babies after age 35 it's just that more precautions should be taken to make sure you get plenty of rest and keep your body healthy.

  2. Thanks for the scoop, Jane!
I'm wondering if the Norway/Sweden tour wasn't going to be a bit longer than the NY trip; which, if memory serves me, was a pretty quick one. Or maybe she is carrying twins!!!! Sorry, I get excited thinking of that.
I am loving her hair a bit shorter, it looks lovely and flatters her.
I thought she looked a bit pale at the the Paddington event in the pink Orla, though I loved the dress on her, so maybe she is still not feeling well enough to travel. Or maybe she is carrying twins!!
Anyway, as always, thanks for your posts, I check everyday.

    1. Thank you for reading!! :)
Yes, the tour was initially going to be five days, so more intense than NYC. Although, I think the trans-Atlantic flight is more taxing.... But, I agree. The announcement is worded to suggest they will go to Norway and Sweden while she is pregnant, though, so I wonder if it isn't just the doctors being careful in the early stages. Zara's tragic experience is likely on everyone's mind.

    2. Yes I agree they will want to play it safer now, Zara was far along if I remember correctly. I also heard the tour was suppose to be 4-5 days, plus a lot busier. I also get the sense either Kate is closer to 4 months then 3 months, or the HG bout was just better. I feel like she came quicker and is showing sooner.

  3. I'm not sure why Kate cannot travel on the tour, but I don't think it would be due to twins. Twins are more apt to arrive early than a single child, thus travel would be less likely later in pregnancy. My SIL suffered with Hyperemisis Gravidum (sp) with each of her four children and it worsened with each child. Perhaps that is the case? Or maybe the trip would be to much upheaval for the George and Charlotte? George off to a new school, the move to KP, a baby on the way. Or even more exciting is the speculation of a Harry/ Meghan engagement! Pippa, get a baby on the way too!

  4. It does seem like with this pregnancy the HG isn't as bad.. I've read it's always worse the more children/ pregnancies that there are.. So it could be Harry and Meg, twins, or that they don't want to push it and let her chill out and do something else while William is going to Finland? Or a combination... What I wouldn't give to be a maid or nanny heck a fly on the wall would be great!!! I just don't know if I could keep it to myself!!

I kinda wish she was expecting twins, but the palace tweetet just a few minutes ago that W&K were expecting "a baby" in April - so it looks like the twin theory is wrong, sadly :(

Maybe there is some special event that she wants to be home for in any case? Something at George's school? A play he has a role in or whatever? I am so curious...

    1. Maybe she's not had time to plan a tour wardrobe given her HG. Maybe she wants Charlotte in nursery school and adjusted first. Maybe George is still doing the shorter day at his school (that is allowed by his school for first-termers) I kind of doubt its a one-time event that just happened to be on the two days chosen for Finland. (Wouldn't the UK have some say in the date?)

How late in the pregnancy does Kate usually "retire" from public life? I thought it was at the 7th month mark so that won't leave lots of time in "early 2018" for the tour.

      Delete
    2. IMO it is simply because of her health and doctors being prudent.

      Delete
    3. Probably the doctors she should not travel until later in the pregnancy.
I think the visit to Finland is for celebrations of the country's centenary, so it would be a trifle odd to put it off until next year.

    4. I'm quite looking forward to a maternity tour wardrobe lizzie! Now that she's on her third and has had time to experiment with both maternity wardrobes and tour wardrobes I can't wait to see what she puts together!

    5. I'm interested in the maternity fashion as well. I'm afraid it might be a lot of big coats again though.

      Delete
    6. Probably given the time of the year but maybe there will be "inside events" where a non-coat will be worn as the main fashion.

      Delete
    7. There should be some of those and maybe an evening event or two. I hope she embraces actual maternity wear as it just fits and looks better than bigger sizes of clothing.

    8. For the life of me, given Kate's seeming progress re the HG, I don't understand why Kate has been cut out of the trip to Finland. On whose orders? (Charlie springs to mind...perhaps it saves on costs he would otherwise have to sponsor. Secondarily, William springs to mind; perhaps he suffers from the same dread disease his father did when married to his mother; i.e., a desire to bathe in the spotlight, solo.) I dunno. Doubt it was the
government, tho. Whatever/whomever the cause, it p*sses me off; why is it seemingly up to everyone but Kate? And that includes her doctors, who are no doubt inclined to play it ultra-safe, given the detrimental effect that any health difficulties would have on their reputation, even if the risk to Kate and the baby is extremely low.

So what's next? A refusal to let Kate go to Norway and Sweden? Can't wait to hear THAT excuse! (Probably will have something to do with her due date, tho.)

My cynicism knows no bounds when it comes to the BRF, not after Diana, but one thing which seems to be clear is that a distinct difference is made between those "of the Blood Royal", and their spouses, who haven't been "of the Blood Royal" for two generations. The interests of the latter are ignored.

      End of rant.

Regarding Kate's wardrobe at West Ham's London stadium in support of Coach Core, on Oct. 18/17, there's really no way I can put it nicely; sh*tty about sums it up, IMO. Seems that money can be found to send George to Thomas's, Battersea ( he "of the Blood Royal") to the tune of some GBP 20 K per annum, but no $ can be found to provide his mother with a pair of decent lined wool pants/trousers, with an elasticized waist, and a decent blazer which doesn't feature rayon and a muddy blue colour.

Okay, so maybe my hostility isn't quite as in check as I had mistakenly hoped. I will say this, with equal honesty: Kate looked happy, healthy, and ready to go. (Not saying she was healthy, just saying she looked so, perhaps thanks to the British press, and their inclination to photoshop.)

Definitely think that I'm fed up with those "of the Blood Royal"; certainly think that the monarchy should cease--like George too much--and isn't he morphing into the spitting image of Charles, The Earl Spencer"?--to want him to live in "the Blood Royal" gilded cage. Horrifying thought.

  6. I think that she isn't very pregnant and therefore they are worrying about relapses etc. She might be feeling better currently, but she's clearly still not completely well. I don't think she's due until later in April which means she's only just passed the 12 week mark, if at all. In which case, with severe HG, I can't blame her for wanting to stay home.

  8. William and Kate have announced she is due in April. It's on the Daily Mail

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-4989088/BBC-Simon-McCoy-pregnant-Duchess-Cambridge-date.html

If you do some research she is pregnant again at exactly the same time she was pregnant with Charlotte. She developed her morning sickness at approximately the same time as with Charlotte, September 04, this time on Sept 8. She took off the same amount of time with this one as she did with Charlotte.

I think she likes this schedule because it gives her the longest time off from royal duties. She'll be off starting April and won't reappear until September sometime.

I also think it's a boy. She's got her future Princess Royal.

As for Meghan and Harry I think the announcement will be after the Queen's 70th wedding anniversary and Meghan has moved from Toronto to Kensington Palace.

And I don't think it's twins for Kate. The uterus is the one muscle you cannot exercise back into shape, no matter how tight you make your stomach. It stretches more with each pregnancy, and because it doesn't contract back down into the pelvis evenly as it did in the first pregnancy, or even the second, it stays a bit bigger.

    1. I agree MK the schedule works well for Kate. I do think though the time of Pippa's wedding might have played a role in not seeing an earlier pregnancy (plus time needed to convince Will to go for #3 if stories about that are true :) But I expect we'll still see her at the Trooping and the baby will likely be christened before Sept. So it won't be a total "Kate drought."

      Delete
    2. I thought the same thing about Pippas wedding (and have for months). If they had been trying before, they would have stopped to avoid the first trimester being pregnant at the wedding. She would not have wanted to miss her sisters wedding from HG.

      Delete
    3. Or Pippa planned her wedding around the baby schedule!

      Delete
  9. She plans her pregnancies in order to have the longest time off from royal duties?

She was on the balcony at Trooping in June, after Charlotte's May birth. She also made other appearances.

It s true that the BRF--actually most European RFs- have slow summers after June. It generally picks up in late September, early October when HM returns from Balmoral, as she has just done. And as Kate is returning to royal duties....if that is what you mean, that she plans around the traditional royal schedule, then I can agree with that possibility. Of course, she did have help in the decision..it is not exactly a unilateral effort. :+) I have known teachers who plan their pregnancies to accommodate the school year. It would be a sensible plan for a royal to do this.

If it is meant as a remark on Kate's "work ethic," then I do not agree. The use of "reappear".
    instead of perhaps "resume" ..'return?"

PS Uterine wall muscle=smooth or involuntary muscle. No conscious control over its use.. Abdominal muscle= skeletal/striated muscle, or voluntary. Means we have some conscious control. The size of the uterus, no matter how stretched from a previous pregnancy, without a fetus, does not change abdominal girth or shape. There is a condition where the abdominal muscles separate and a bulge is formed. Zara was shamed for her post-pregnancy figure when she very well could have experienced this pregnancy complication. But still-uterine muscle tone does not affect the abdominal muscle tone and thus does not affect how soon one "shows." The hormone Relaxin does affect the abdominal muscles as well, however, to allow the growth of the fetus further on in pregnancy.
A person with good abdominal muscle tone will not under ordinary circumstances 'show" at three months, meaning the movement of the fetus up out of the pelvic cavity so that the abdomen shows the pregnancy. At least not to the extent we note with Kate now. We are talking about a peanut here. There will be waistline expansion during the first months, such as can be accommodated by elasticized waistlines or loose or raised waistlines. Exactly what she was wearing late July through August.
However, if we go by Hollywood/movie/TV standards, everyone has a flat belly until the child magically appears. At least that used to be the routine. I think Lucille Ball was the first actress to look pregnant on a television show and that was because she actually was pregnant with her daughter and had a choice to continue in the series while pregnant as she and her husband owned the studio. Heck, I don't even know if the word "pregnant" was generally allowed then.

There was a time not so long ago that royal women wore voluminous dresses and tops (Diana?") to disguise the "bump" (I hate that word) Kate's current wearing of dresses that display her obvious pregnant form would have been seriously frowned upon. I think she wore that floral Erdem that was molded to her shape to a private event last time, but I think she stuck to maternity wear after that.

    1. It's true that uterine and abdominal muscles are entirely different anon1, however most pregnant women find that their abdominal muscles never knit back together the way they did before their first pregnancy, even if they don't end up with a bulge. The issue is at the midline, where either side of the abdominal wall muscles meet - so your stomach can look flat until something behind the abdominal wall puts pressure on the muscles that might be laying flat next to each other, but aren't actually "stitched" back together.

    2. Lucille Ball was the second woman to appear pregnant on TV but she was expecting her son, Desi Jr. when they wrote her pregnancy into the show. (She was actually pregnant with Lucie when they filmed the pilot but it was never mentioned.) The network wouldn't allow the word "pregnant" to be used so the episode where she finds out and and tells Ricky is titled "Lucy Is Enceinte" - the French word for pregnant or expecting. After that the pregnancy was always referred to as "expecting" never allowing the dreaded "P" word the entire time.

  10. All of the official Kensington Palace announcements have referred to "A" child. Or, a "THIRD CHILD." If there were more than one, I think they'd choose their words differently. Given this, the twins speculation seems silly.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I went back and looked at some of the Daily Mail articles with George, and right from the start there was speculation by the media that she was pregnant with twins. There was a lot of pseudo science about the levels of hormone causing the morning sickness, etc., and claiming that it meant she was 'possibly' having twins.

The media likes to be so dramatic. I think they do it as click bait.

    1. Agreed. :-)

Generally speaking now, I am happy to speculate about Kate having a boy or a girl as well as some guesses at baby names. But I think some of the speculation over her due date can be a bit much. I feel for her. IMO, her title doesn't ENTITLE us to know every tidbit about her pregnancy.

      Delete
    2. Who doesn't speculate when family and friends are pregnant that it might be twins? Harmless fun. I think someone even said that twins run in a branch of Kate's family. In my family every generation of the extended family has a set. It's just fun.

I think the media should get a pass here. πŸ™„

      Delete
    3. I think the twin speculation has been overdone. It has accompanied every pregnancy of Kate's as well as many months of non-pregnancy. If Kate has DZ twins in her family it certainly isn't in her close female relatives (mother, sister, maternal grandmother) at least as far as I know. And she doesn't have the other factors that make twins more likely (higher-fat diet, higher BMI) although her taller height is favorable.

I do think the due date speculation was quite understandable. I KNOW it could not be helped because of her illness, but announcing a pregnancy without simultaneously announcing a general due date naturally elicits rampant speculation and tummy-gazing. I can't remember any other pregnancy announcement (whether in the news or in my family/friends) that has not been accompanied by mention of the due date in some way (even a general date like "spring")

She was out again yesterday afternoon, with William ant Harry at a Core Coach graduation.
Nice jacket and the skinny jeans---wonder hoe she got into them,
It was another afternoon engagement, not far from home, so I suspect, she still is affected in the morning and travelling.
Hopefully she might be better soon.

  15. The royals are usually pretty quiet in January, so I bet The Tour will be in February, probably early in February. They'll probably put Kate in travel lockdown by the end of February. The days in Oslo and Stockholm are pretty short in early February, shorter still far north. It'll be interesting to see how they manage around that.

  16. Questions regarding the Sweden- Norway (apparently, Sweden-NorwayFinland ) tour.
In the past, tours have been announced officially two to three months ahead by the FO and sometimes the host countries.
All we had this time were speculation and "source" leaks from reporters-possibly spurred by a reported quote from someone who heard an off-the-cuff remark William said about hoping to visit etc.
Now we are told that a tour that was never officially announced is being "rescheduled," due to Kate's pregnancy complications.. KP, I believe, does not indicate a rescheduling. Just an announcement of a tour three months from now.
It confounds my logical mind how two host countries could completely rearrange their schedules the month before a proposed tour. I realise the Spain State visit was rescheduled--twice-- ( for entirely different, nationally-based reasons, first by Spain and then by GB). The election caused a bit of a frantic change in some important activities by the host nation, GB, including the State visit and opening of Parliament. Schedule changing on a national basis is not quite as simple as calling the hairdresser to reschedule an appointment.
    Something does not compute.
Now we have official word of a Norway-Sweden tour in early 2018...about 3 months from now---which follows the usual protocol. The tours are usually announced by date/month well ahead, with individual details added later.
It seems to me, that if the N/S tour was really originally on the books for November, plans with the host countries would have been started months ago. Details such as complicated arrangements and schedules have to be arranged. That sort of planning takes months and involves a myriad of details--and that is for just one country. A November tour would mean that the announcement should have been made several months before November, in July or August---Before Kate's pregnancy was known. There would have been no reason to with hold announcement because there was no known pregnancy to consider.

Question: 1) why was there no official announcement of this tour several months ahead, as is usual practice---AND which HAS been done by the official October announcement of a (supposed) January tour? Still some vagueness...beginning of 2018, not "January."

    2) Why was Finland never included in the reporter speculation/leaks before now? I think the part of the official Finland announcement,( which was given separately from the N/S tour) , that states Catherine will not be participating, regardless of her health status...I think that just indicates these tours/visits were always meant to be separate and Kate's pregnancy has nothing to do with the scheduling or who goes.
Sources and commenters are doing verbal gymnastics to explain why all this makes sense. Why a possibly 6-7 month pregnancy that is already complicated would be safer for traveling and a hectic schedule than a 4=5 month one. And why she will not go to Finland. Period.( Kate is being blamed for" choosing" to cancel Finland, by the way, despite the fact that there was never an indication that she had been scheduled in the first place. Shades of Shamrocks) Which begs the question- if she was never to go to Finland and Finland was supposedly just part of the original November three country tour, what was the plan? Send Kate home before Finland, after visiting N?S? Arrive after F and then visit N/S with William?

Honestly, I think this "rescheduling" slant is an effort by reporters to save face for relaying what was possibly false or inaccurate information.anon1

William has been known for passing fake info to acquaintances/employees to determine who can be trusted with information. Is it possible that in the wake of the staff over-haul that employees are still being vetted to determine who can be trusted with private/unpublished royal business? "Sources" constantly give out conflicting stories. For example, Meghan reportedly met the Queen on a visit to Balmoral after H&M's return from their 3-week African holiday- the day of the anniversary of Diana's death, of all days. Now there is a story that she recently met HM for tea at Windsor, I believe it was. It was somewhat clandestine, held in HM''s private sitting room, which explains why only the one "source" knew about it. We were even told what the three had to snack on. Another example: we are to believe that Meghan is simultaneously filming Suits in Toronto through November whilst touring England with Harry, searching out possible homes-Plus being seen driven around London.

It may simply be a matter of reporters being stressed to come up with exclusives or to fill the 24 hour news cycle. Sooner or later, some of their "source" information will come up short in the facts department. What to do then? Admit the source was not reliable and the story untrue and thereby taint future stories, not to mention the reporter's credibility?
Likely, spinning is the chosen option. Just a guess on my part to try to explain the verbal gymnastics being performed to try to explain conflicting and or illogical stories.

Reading the news has become much like making one's way through a maze...so many false turns that somehow never lead to the truth. anon1
