Official: Prince Harry is Engaged to Meghan Markle!

Monday, November 27, 2017

[New post featuring the Sunken Garden photo call and the ring is live here] Prince Harry seems to have found his happily ever after, after all. Clarence House announced this morning that he is engaged to Meghan Markle and the couple will wed in the Spring of 2018!

Kensington Palace released a statement on behalf of Meghan Markle's parents in which they expressed their happiness.

William and Kate put out a brief remark via Kensington Palace, too, saying:
We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.
Rumors hit fever pitch over the weekend, with fans and the media alike expecting an announcement and day. Now, camera crews are quickly setting up at Kensington Palace and we will have engagement pictures this afternoon, as well as an interview airing this evening.

When William and Kate got engaged, the first thing they did was film the tv interview, which aired later in the day, then they made their way to St. James's Palace for the photo call with the press. I suspect that Harry and Meghan will follow the same schedule, so they are interviewing now, and we will get a late afternoon press meet. Sounds like they are doing it in the opposite order. Early press call (2pm local time) and then the interview, which will air tonight at 6pm London time. What do you think Meghan will wear to the photo call?

There is already a report that the wedding might in March, which is earlier than I would have expected, but I do think that now these two have announced, they'd like to be married as soon as possible. There has been a suggestion that the couple could marry in Los Angeles, Meghan's hometown. I don't know what to think about that. My sense is Meghan will be excited for a British royal wedding, but you never know! Wherever they marry, it will be a media bonanza.

The second whisper is that Meghan will receive and accept an invitation to Christmas at Sandringham this year. I keep hearing that "Kate wasn't permitted to spend Christmas at Sandringham the year she got engaged," but that is a little misleading. William worked that Christmas. It was his last as a single man, so he took the holiday shift so that daddies could be home with their kids. I do't know if Meghan will attend Sandringham Christmas, but just like it was clear these two would get engaged quickly, where William and Kate went very slowly, it is clear that Meghan and Harry are keen to start their lives together. Again, the difference in age (at this stage in their relationship) between William and Kate and Harry and Meghan cannot be under emphasized.

I will update the blog later today when we get pictures from the photo call!

  5. Thanks Jane!
The Daily Mail is reporting there will be an afternoon photo call at KP with an evening interview to air on TV this evening (all GMT, of course!). Very exciting!
I’m guessing an early summer wedding to give Kate a bit of time to recover after the baby in April, and after the Trooping of the Colour.

  7. So wonderful!!! Congratulations to the happy couple!!! Beyond thrilled over here in Portland, Oregon. They seem as much in love as Will and Kate, it is really wonderful to see such fine young people together. They will be such an inspiration to so many. I am so looking forward to this whirlwind engagement period, the wedding, and their beautiful lives in the future!!! Congratulations Harry and Meghan! xoxo

  8. Am I happy? - No, but I don't wish them ill will. I don't like her. They have barely been together over the last 16 or so months. I think Meghan really doesn't know what shes in for. I do think her style will be more interesting than Kates, so thats one point in her favor.

    1. The good news is that you don't have to like her - Harry does and he sertaibly seems to. As far as the length of their relationship, if it's the right person it's the right person 16months into your relationship or 10 years into your relationship.

    2. I didn't want to say anything because I don't have anything nice to say, but I am grateful to 5:44 for expressing a dissenting opinion. I am one of those who didn't find anything wonderful about Meghan until now. Perhaps she will be more interesting in her new role. But I hope those who are critical towards her can express their opinion freely.

    3. I am sure they will Anon 7:55, and they can join the ranks of those who were critical of Diana, ate critical of Kate and her family and will certainly be critical of Charlotte some day. There's never a lack of people who wish for a soapbox from which to make their harsh judgments known and soapboxes for them to stand on.

    4. Kate reportedly likes Meghan and has supported the relationship. And Kate has actually met Meghan and is intimately aware of what Meghan's role requires. So there's that. But by all means continue to think the worst.

    5. It never ceases to amaze me on this site how someone cannot have an opposing opionin without others picking holes in that opinion, and the tone used is disrespectful to them. Neither Anon 5:44 or Anon 7:55 have stated anything against any other posting on here, or any other royal person, or made implications about any one else's comments. Just their own opinion. However, Anon 7:03, Anon 8:31 and Anon 12:21 do not have the grace to do the same through their comments. If you stifle opposing opinions then the comments section becomes merely tedious and childish because you haven't heard an opinion you want to.

    6. "I don't like her" and "I hope I can be critical of her" are not opinions that open the door to debate or even understanding why someone holds such an opinion.

    7. Anon 5:44 and 7:55,
You can criticize her all you want but that will not change that fact that Meghan is going to marry harry and become a member of the royal family. I hope you know that

  9. So happy for them! It's wonderful that Harry appears to have found his happily ever after! Can't wait for the first picture of the four (Will, Kate, Harry and Meagan) together. Wishing them a long happy life together!!
I hope they get married in London, would love a balcony photo of the two on their wedding day. Also hope it is broadcast on TV, would love to finally see a royal wedding (missed Will & Kate's).

  10. Busy times for royal watchers! One thing I've REALLY appreciated about the current British Royal Family's senior men is that they have NO issues being involved in relationships and marrying women their age or older---THAT to me is something HUGELY commendable and revealing esp. when you consider the trend of so many men to marry women who are significantly younger than them, so young they could sometimes be their daughters. So, I take my hat off to the senior royal men! Charles is married to a woman who is one year older, The Duchess of Cambridge is half a year older than the Duke and now Meghan M. is three years older than Harry. Silvia

    1. I agree, Silvia! I was recently in the US for a weekend and we were chatting with a married couple - he was in his early 40s and my guess is she was 20. They looked upper middle class but holy smokes I can’t remember the last time I saw such a modern age gap like that! She looked and sounded so young. Makes me appreciate the “turning of the tables” even more.

  14. I’m thrilled. Anyone else hoping for a traditional diamond rather than the rumored emerald for the ring?

Also hearing that the photocall will be in the Sunken Gardens..too bad they’ll have to be all bundled up against the cold, but I bet Meghan will look beautiful. My money is for sure on a Canadian designer...Erdem dress under a Sentaler coat!

  15. I think an LA wedding is unlikely due to security and logistics. I do, however, think Meghan may purchase a place in LA in her name only. You know, just to keep something of herself and something of her own. In Sweden, apparently Princess Sofia owns her own condo in South Africa where she has a charity. When so much of your life is provided to you by your in laws, spouse and tax payer dollars, I think it’s nice when people who marry into royal families can have something of their own.

  16. Very excited as a royal watcher and wishing them much happiness! I wonder if George and/or Charlotte will be in the wedding party? Will Meghan want a North American bridal party or will they have a BRF wedding party of just two adults then all children? Will she have her dad or dad AND mom walk her down the aisle?

It’s always interesting for me to see how traditional or modern/unique couples are at their weddings. I’m very curious to see if this is a cookie cutter traditional BRF wedding (which is still lovely and wonderful) or how many times we’ll see their personalities and modern trends throughout their day.

    Very excited; I love weddings!

  17. Hmmm... looks like Harry and Meghan are engaged, the Queen has approved it, Harry is not stepping aside... shall I go on? 😂 All of the naysayers were completely wrong.

    Best to the happy couple!👏🍾🥂

  20. I still think a civil wedding has already happened and parenthood as well as a wedding is what's happening in the spring. See the recent history of Princess Tessy.

I was wondering if they might have a private wedding and then announce it, but I hope not. I think Jane said maybe March and I was thinking the same. I also loved her outfit, coat to shoes to ring. Very sweet that Harry put two stones from Diana's jewelry. My favorite part of the interview was when he said, "All the stars were lining up," or something like that. Very sweet.

St. George's Chapel in May. That will be a lovely place. I thought it might be there. I'm surprised she needs to be baptized if she's a Protestant as they are saying. If you've already been baptized, even as a Catholic, so long as it is a Christian religion, the Church of England accepts that baptism. She would then need to have a confirmation, like Kate did. Kate is CofE but had not been confirmed. Maybe the end of May which will be well after Baby Cambridge 3. I think it's a boy.
