Cambridges' Christmas Card Picture

Monday, December 18, 2017

William and Kate have kicked the week off right by releasing a new family picture this morning! The picture, taken by Chris Jackson at Kensington Palace earlier this year, is a darling image of the four Cambridges and is being used on their Christmas card this year.

It looks like this photo was probably taken in the summer. The children are wearing the same clothes they wore for the family's arrival in Berlin, but Kate has yet to get her haircut.

At the same time they released the picture, the couple announced that Princess Charlotte will start at Willcocks Nursery School in London in January of 2018. The school is very close to Kensington Palace - just down the road from the Royal Albert Hall, which is adjacent to Kensington Gardens.

Kate chose to wear her bespoke suit from Catherine Walker, which she debuted on her first solo trip overseas. This was a hit in the Netherlands, and I think it works very well in this cute family picture, too. As usual, Kate has color coordinated her family beautifully, with George and William in deep navies, and Charlotte in a light blue floral to complement her mom's icy hue.

You can just barely see Kate's earrings, but the photo I have is too grainy to make out what pair. To me it looks like she might be wearing diamonds, but it could also be one of her Kiki drops, or something else.

Let me know if you have any guesses about those earrings!

  1. I would have loved to see a more current photo with the kids and something a little less formal.

    1. I agree I preferred the backyard pic but I imagine it can be difficult to get both kids dressed up, on best behavior and both smiling at the camera at the same time :)

Do you all think this was taken the same day as George's birthday photo? It looks like the same shirt and Chris Jackson took both photos.

    2. I also think it was taken on the same day as George's birthday picture.

    3. It's formal in nature but there are many cute informalities if you look closely! George's left shoe is slipping off and William is trying to steady the little dear. It's adorable.

  2. Always love a photo. As a busy mom of two, I think this “older” photo says maybe Kate is mortal after all - Christmas snuck up on her like the rest of us, she was so ill for months...so hey, here’s a pic! Happens to the best of us:)

  3. I think it’s a bland boring photo where they all look perfectly acceptable but the sterile setting shows absolutely nothing of what they are as people. Symbolic of their relationship with the outside world where they strive to reveal as little of their lives and personalities as possible.

    1. I have a sneaking suspicion that it will be very hard to keep Charlotte sterile of behind palace walls as she gets older. That little girl seems to have some serious personality!

    2. I disagree. I think it shows a generous hint of personalities of the kids. Shy George and mischievous Charlotte. And kids who are close to their parents. While this pic is primarily formal in nature, there's informality in it. Love it!

    3. Or perhaps it shows a young refined couple who are conservative in their style and considerate enough to share a photograph of their quiet family with the world. I think the photo is lovely.

    4. Oh my shows how different we all view photos. I just find it a not very well done photograph.I have no problems with it being formal or not themed etc. but I just do not think it is a very good photo. I look at the photographer for those issues.

  7. I agree with the above comments, a causal dressed family photo would have been supreme for their Christmas card. Also it would have been delightful to have their family dog Lupo in the grouping. This photo looks as if they are on a tour of another country.

    1. You really hit the nail on the head. It looks like a tour photo they would send as a thank you to their host country. Wish they were sitting informally in a cozy room. The void especially exists in the blank background.

  8. A Lovely start to the week. Rather more formal than we are used to. Love that George is hanging onto his daddy's finger, whilst Charlotte looks a proper young lady and she is off to nursery school in January. I suppose that leaves nanny free for the new baby.
These look as though they were taken on the same day as George's 4th birthday ones.
Last year we saw the children on Christmas Day as they went to Church in Berkshire. They don't seem to take them at Sandringham until they are older, which always seems to be the odd way around.

It looks like she has it around William. Just love it.

    4. There is some talk of Catherine being photoshopped into the picture. There is something odd about her right arm disappearing. She also looks odd on close ups of this picture. For a formal picture she would not have her arm around William but would be touching Charlotte somewhere. Love this family but something seems off?

      Delete
    5. I'm wondering if William intended for his arm around her also. But then had to use both hands to settle little George. You can see in the photo that George is actually moving. Typical little boy. And real life with little ones! Lovely photo! Just beautiful! I find it it's amazing to just get everybody with a decent smile when you start having children. Love the blues. They look great on everybody!

      Delete
    6. She put her arm around William?? No way. They are as non touchy freely as it gets publicly.
This photo is strange. You'd see at least part of her upper arm but there's absolutely no trace of it. They are so weird with their photos I think I'm over it. Back to wrapping!

      Delete
    7. Maybe her arm didn't look that great in the picture and they decided to photoshop it out and pretend she was resting it on Will's back. Or maybe she actually put her arm on his back and it just looks unfortunate in the picture. If you look closely her shoulder is just slightly behind Will's arm and she is turned towards him just a little.

      Delete
    8. I think she was photoshopped in too. If her arm is on William's back here, we would see some of it unless she is touching him from high up on his mid back or even higher. If she has her arm on him that high up, her suit would be wrinkling around that arm or shoulder from the position. Her suit on William's side is perfectly creaseless. It's well done but if one looks closely, it just doesnt look right. Not sure why they would resort to this, especially where anyone with an eye for photography would catch it.

      Delete
    9. Well, I think her *face* was touched up, but I cannot buy into her being "photoshopped in". Why? They could have easily released another photo from the past year, or taken other photo(s) if the finished product here was not what they expected. And her suit is rather snug so if she is simply standing close enough to touch him, there would be no obvious wrinkle. Maybe it's me, but I also don't see a mystery regarding her "missing" arm. :-) Sorry, ladies.

      Delete
    10. I agree, royalfan. I have zero idea why she would need to be photoshopped in but she most definitely is. Her suit is tight and her arm would need to be fairly high up on William's back for us not to see her elbow at that angle. Unless she's a contortionist, her shoulder would need to be rotated more with obvious movement and pulling to the fabric.

  12. They can't really win. When they released the back yard picture the flack was that Charlotte was photo shopped in and it was too casual! I really liked the GQ photos of them in their back yard but the comments on that were that it was too weird. I like the way this picture shows the children leaning into their parents. Does Charlotte look like her regal great-grandmother?

I agree. People here and on other blogs can’t be happy. They always have something negative to say. If they did a Christmas photo shoot, they would have to have done it in the summer. They would complain about that too.
This photo shows a family that love each other. You can tell George is a daddy’s boy and Char, otter is a mommy’s girl. They are a very beautiful family.

      Delete
    3. I totally agree. This is picture perfect! If people are dissecting this and criticizing to the point that they are actually writing it to share with others then they need to get more going on in their life. I have rarely seen a more beautiful family photo. They look like models yet they are not in perfect stiff positions but showing the reality of life with little ones. So cute that you can tell both little ones are in action. A moment in time captured. Let's get in the Christmas spirit and spread a little cheer instead of nitpicking and having opinions about things that are none of our business.

      Delete
    4. Grtlkes, I think that's a fair observation. I, too, recall concerns over photos being too casual, the Cambridge's not looking towards the camera, etc. This photo is lovely IMO.

      Delete
    5. I had the very same thoughts as I have read through the comments. There is always someone “photoshopped” into the pics. Why would they need to do that, especially Catherine. It’s not like she is misbehaving like one on the kids might be. I would like to just concentrate on the fact that they DID release a family photo for Christmas. I remember the year they didn’t release one and the outcry that happened. I for one was Happy to see the Happy Family with little George with one sock pulled up and is balancing on one foot. A little less formality to a picture that was meant to be “formal”. As always they just can’t win for some.

      Delete
  13. Everyone looks very nice. No closed eyes, odd expressions, strange limb perspectives or misplaced hands/feet looking too big as sometimes happens when photographing multiple people. In that regard Chris did well. And I think Kate's suit looks much better than it did after traveling. Still, it is one of the most sterile and the least merry Christmas card photos I've ever seen. I know W&K have done informal shots in past years so perhaps they wanted a change. And I know they're royals not the family down the block. But even compared to the Christmas card photos chosen by other BRF members over the last 50 or so years, some of them formal, this one stands out and not in a good way to me. I think if either 1) there was an actual background (indoors or outdoors) vs the greyish photographer's backdrop and surround OR if some of them had been seated or turned slightly vs being lined up straight on to the camera, it would have been a warmer, more "alive" photo. As it is, the clothes they are wearing are highlighted almost more than the people themselves. The year Will was born and the year Harry was born Charles & Diana's cards were more formal & did have a photographer's backdrop (med blue one yr, dark cream the other) but both of those were waist up shots, not full length shots that surround the subjects in soft nothingness.

    1. I thought same. And very surprising for Chris Jackson.
Kate's face has been over photo shopped (or weird filtering) and there's no trace of her right arm.
They're a young good looking family, why these bland, strange images? This should be as easy as it gets.

    2. Agree, never saw such a bland and boring Christmas picture, they could do so much better!

    3. Really looks to me like her right arm is just behind William!

  15. I actually love the photo! Even if it's formal in nature, you can detect the children's personalities. And they are so very adorable. Majority of Christmas photos of the royals in years past are formal in nature and not taken in festive months. They are taken somewhere during the year. This one, I think, is a beautiful photo of a happy and loving family befitting their future roles.

  16. I really can't imagine this was taken on or near the same day as George's first day at school, or even terribly close to it. I don't think Kate was too busy dashing around dressed in a suit with makeup on to make it to those cancelled appearances.

This is really not what I usually expect for a Christmas card, but they're royals and have decided to go the more simple (bleak.) route. Maybe they'll set a trend and all of us will appear in front of a white background on next year's cards, instead of those cozy family scenes we usually send out? :) Probably not true for me, but never say never eh?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I very much liked this formal photo; a glimpse into a young future King and Queen, with their two older children. Wasn't a fan of some of the less formal pics; in particular, the one featuring Fall--too casual, for my taste, and had nothing whatsoever to do with Xmas--or, indeed, with anything else!

Have read various comments, on various blogs, suggesting that this photo isn't Christmassy enuf, but, IMO, those taken in front of a tree all dressed up for Santa, usually taken well before Xmas, fall into the kitchy bracket--just a little too cute, sorta sugary-sweet, and entirely fake. This portrait, which I have dubbed "Study in Blue", avoids that trap. Instead, we are given a lovely portrait of a family, one that will stand up to the acid test of time. Nor would I be surprised if it, or a similar one, found a place on W&K's mantelpiece. It's a keeper.

  18. I just noticed that George's socks are uneven and his left foot is about to go for the run. I love that! I think it was a quick photoshoot with quite a fun memory associated with it. I can't believe they will be a family of five by next Christmas.

  20. I totally disagree that this picture is too bland. This is a formal historic picture that also manages to capture all of their personalities. Perfect! We have a bunch of casual pictures of them (the fall photo, the skiing photo, the one in the window with lupo) that I think it is perfect timing for a formal picture before they become a family of five. I love that George looks like he's about to run away and Charlotte showing her mischievous personality! I also just noticed that Charlotte's eyes look exactly like her mummy's. She is going to be quite a stunner.

Kate looks absolutely flawless in the suit. Great picture all in all.

    Earring vote: Kiki drops

Anyway it’s a little formal, but still a lovely photo. They must be consistent and release a family portrait every Christmas. It’s good PR and a controlled environment. I wish it was more recent, as kids grow fast, but a non-pregnancy photo seems in line with Kate

I read that Charlotte’s school prides themselves in teaching manners. Have to start early with a princess!!

  25. This is a great picture of the 4 of them, but for a Christmas card I would have loved to have seen a picture of them together on a couch in their living room or some other setting that shows us some personality. The white background is generic and dull. Even Charles and Camilla have a card taking from her birthday party - which gives us a little insight into their off duty lives/personality. Will and Kate show very little of their real lives/personality to the public and I think this is a huge mistake...the public want to see even just a little glimpse of their off duty life...it's what keeps people interested in them and their causes. Victoria in Sweden has done a great job of this - in addition to the video they released, they also released a lovely card of the 4 of them playing in the snow. I already feel public interest in them has worn off of Will and Kate due to the fact that they really don't let people in.

  31. I do like the photo, but it's not the best photo of Kate, I think. She still looks beautiful, but her face appears to be weirdly photoshopped. Wish she had been looking directly at the camera like everyone else. George and Charlotte are adorable.

  32. I think this is a lovely family picture of them. Kate looks beautiful, the children are darling, and William looks so happy. I certainly don't blame Kate for not wanting family photo while pregnant and I especially wouldn't want that in the history books!

Maybe the reason they don't let people into their private lives more is because nobody is ever satisfied with what they do. Too casual, too formal, somebody has been photoshopped, the background is boring, the clothes aren't right, the dog should/should not be in the photo, etc., etc., etc.. Why would they be interested in going out of their way just to be criticized?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I disagree respectfully. From the very beginning they acted like this, protecting their privacy at any cost. They were never generous not with the public (their fans) nor with the media. This is the price they pay, after years of reluctance and "we know better" attitude. The only occassion they realise the media is there when Kate wants to congratulate on the engagement, than she can stop and act like an adult.

Also how lovely we all things differently. Life would be boringly normal if we all sang the same tune.

      Delete
    2. Robin I don’t necessarily see this as their private lives. They benefit massively from tax payer money and it’s part of their role. If William wanted a private life he’d walk away from his role and do something else with his life. They need a thick skin. I’m not saying that means people can be cruel in their comments, but that they need to realize they will make some people thrilled and some people will criticize and judge. William is a bit too extreme sometimes in how he’s carving out his role and relationships, as he takes on greater accountabilities for the monarch. That’s a slippery slope, IMO.

    3. Robin, I really do agree with what you have said and have the very same thoughts.
~ A not sure why there cannot be a distinction between there “public” and “private lives”. I sometime feel some people want to “own” every inch of their lives and their persons AND they want total control of every moment and movement they make. . Yes they do get “benefits” from taxpayers, but the benefit Great Britain get far outweighs the ~ £0.58/yr each person pay in support.

    5. I miss seeing Lupo in the pictures but fully accept how difficult it would be to get a good shot with two children and a dog.

      Delete
    6. Bunny it extends beyond £0.58/person. England invented land laws so that average person only ever leases land and pay taxes to the aristocracy who are allowed to own the land. William/Catherine/Harry receive A LOT of funding from Charles that is based on the landholdings he has based on his title. Remember, Charles pays for Catherine’s working wardrobe that has become pricy the more comfortable she has become with her role. Charles collects taxes from those who can’t own the/his land. When Charles becomes King, William will inherit these lands that generate massive annual income to fund his lifestyle and work. We have heard headlines like “Charles is paying for W&Ks Home Reno”. Where does Charles get the money from? Taxes from landowners where he holds a title. They don’t make their money by working unless th u are an air ambulance pilot or in the military.

    7. Charles’s Duchy apparently made him £20 million last year old. His title funds his lifestyle.

    8. Ditto & agree with Anon 9:31.

I’m not trying to become difficult we just need to look at the facts and tax $ funds most of the Royal’s lifestyle (as well as other aristocrats with land holdings associated to their titles). The UK designed land ownership to benefit and financially provide for the rich aristocracy.

Also, I find releasing photos quite a private thing. Photo sessions are private/closed door. W&K control the location, wardrobe, relaxed or formal, etc. Then out of all the images they choose what insight into their family they want to share. To me that is the Cambridge’s having a lot of control, while still doing something expected of them.

    9. It really is fine to have a private life. No one is entitled to all the details of another's life--particularly when everything they do, say, wear, is so easily and freely scrutinized and criticized. Far classier to keep your private life private.

  35. There's something strange going on with this. I think Kate definitely was Photoshopped in. She's supposedly 5' 9" *before* heels. Well, her heels are at least 3" here but she looks 6 inches shorter than William (when it should be half that). Must've been sick with HG and added in later. Or someone stood in for her, then her head was Photoshopped over theirs. The lighting on her features is extremely different. Too flat and lacking highlights/white spots like William's nose, etc.

    Bizarre.

    Replies
    1. I agree Kate's missing arm looks a bit weird and agree with posters who suggest it must have been photoshopped out for some reason. I'm not a fan of photoshopping in general and think the original shot of her arm must have been really quite odd to justify erasing her arm entirely. Even Kate's very slight turn sideways to the camera wouldn't explain the arm's total disappearance.

The height difference between Will & Kate you mention Am is another matter. I'm not at all convinced Kate is 5'9" in stocking feet. But even if she is, a quick search shows there are numerous non-studio photos on the internet of Kate in heels without a hat that show her looking as short standing next to Will as this one does (looks like about 5 maybe as much as 6 inches shorter to me. And I agree that doesn't make sense if he is 6'3", she's 5'9" & she's wearing at least 3" heels.) But there are also numerous non-studio photos online of Kate in heels without a hat that show her only a couple of inches shorter when standing next to Will. So who knows! Maybe it depends on how high *Will's* heels are? Or if Kate's hair is extra poufy or flat on top? (In reality poufy or flat or made that way in Photoshop Land.) Or maybe their heights are so regularly photoshopped that most photos represent their heights inaccuately.

Photoshop as a tool is starting to remind me of the old adage "give a boy a hammer and everything becomes a nail."

  37. I'm not particularly a fan of this picture but, I do agree with Robin that I'm happy to see a new one. As a general point, I think Kate's hair sometimes looks a bit funny in these very posed pictures - there seems to be something about how she gets it blow-dried for these that comes off as a tad messy. 1. Charles and Camilla have the advantage of not having to include two active children in their photos. Taking photos of children where they're all looking at the camera without eyes closed or blurry in motion is like herding cats. Even in this very formal photo little George looks as if he's ready to bolt and Charlotte is barely standing up straight. We did family photos this past summer and the best we could get was the two oldest looking at the camera (complete with 5-yr-old cheesy smile) while the 3-yr-old looks at his 1-yr-old sister as she looks at whatever caught her attention up in the sky. Nobody knows what the two youngest look like but, hey, nobody was crying or running away!

    3. I think W & K have the advantage because they have G & C. The cute factor is beyond. Put them in a relaxed setting, doing something they love, add Chris Jackson in the background taking pics - those pics would be magic! Not hard at all.

Plus, really, no one likes Camilla, so....😉

While I am glad to see a new picture, this seems to be an overly formal portrait intended to be used for charities or official business, and is not very Christmas-card-y. ;) The Prince of Wales does it right - even in very formal clothes or situations, his Christmas cards always strike an excellent note of showing his and Camilla's personalities and charm. This Cambridge card is all business and hugely boring, although the children are cute. It looks like Kate and William were taking a new head shot for their charities and decided to throw the children in to take a family picture. These types of pictures are definitely needed and have their place, but it's incredibly staid and overly photoshopped. By the way, where is Kate's arm? It looks like she was inserted into this picture from another shot where she might have liked her expression better, but it wasn't done very well.

Even the background is just so beige. Clearly William wants absolutely zero peeks into KP, but something in the gardens or in a formal room at one of the palaces with the same poses would have been infinitely preferable to this...blandness.

I think Kate is wearing the diamond earrings borrowed from The Queen (the ones she wore with the pink outfit to The Trooping).

  43. I know Kate likes things quite fitted but this outfit looks so snug that I would imagine it being quite uncomfortable, especially when chasing after two toddlers!

  44. This is fine. I really like the Swedish royals winter snow video they release. Adorable. I bet M & H release something cute like that with their kids. They seem to "get" the public's affection for them. William seems dour and brings down Kate's fun side. 💁🏼

    1. William does show his "fun" side sometimes. But you're right, he is quite guarded a lot of the time. Kate seems to always be bubbly & "jokey". I hope that William loosens up a bit as he continues with his role & his children get older. It would be great to see a Christmas video released by the Cambridges in the future. I can't wait to see Harry with his little family, also.

    2. William and Kate's ski holiday photos last year were cute and fun. Of course back then people complained about those, too. Damned if they do; damned if they don't.

    3. The backlash about the ski pics was because, about that same time, reports came out that W only worked a few days a month (about 3) as a pilot and then the palace released rightout lies about pilot policies that turned out to be bogus.

The actual pics weren't the problem.

  45. Regarding Charlotte's nursery school schedule. Early reports apparently based on the school website more than a KP press release indicated a half-day morning schedule . Then a royal reporter stated that Charlotte would be going to school full time, while George only went part time. Some information on WKW indicates to me the confusion with the schedule might have come from some information somewhere that she would attend both mornings and afternoons--thus the "full-time" speculation. I read it that she would attend SOME afternoons and some mornings, but not both on the same day..which would be full time, I guess. I can't imagine a 2 1/2 year old attending school 8 hours a day when many still take two naps a day at that age.
I honestly think the current theme of some tweeters of George being favored and coddled because he is male and an heir to his Father was behind the rush to say Charlotte would have to go full time. There has also been an effort to make Kate look like she was sending her daughter off to school to give herself time off. Of course, I might be wrong, but the reporter obviously was in a hurry to get there first with information without doing proper fact-checking.
I think the vagueness of the information or lack thereof could relate to security concerns. That woman was arrested after breaking into George's school and an arrest was made of a person who had solicited harm on the internet to George. Caution is indicated.

Re: the school, there is an option to do mornings or mornings and afternoons. At that age, they don't do just afternoons. Charlotte may very likely be set up to attend both, and then sometimes they get her at noon. However, the school isn't daycare, and the afternoon session probably gets out at whatever time a normal school gets out (say, 3-ish).

George isn't being coddled - his school schedule just started out at the beginning of doing half days to get the children used to attending the school. He is likely up to a full day (getting out at 3 or whenever the school dismisses) by now. In the UK, they start school at 4, so it's like the equivalent of the now popular 4K in America.

Since George is likely going for a full day now, it makes sense to send Charlotte as well so that the whole afternoon isn't spent running around picking up children.

    2. W&K seem to make decisions for their children based on what is best for that child. Charlotte and George clearly have different personalities and therefore will be ready for or need different experiences at different times - including schooling!

  46. Each to their own I suppose but it looks too sterile and posed for my liking.

  47. Personally I like a Christmas card photo which is less studio like, but I imagine they wanted to use one where Kate wasn't pregnant, and so this was the best they had from the rest of the year.

  48. Maybe they released this perfectly lovely but slightly boring photo because they knew that H&M would be releasing engagement photos and wanted to share the spotlight?
