Duchess Kate in Heads Together Hues

Tuesday, January 23, 2018

The Duchess of Cambridge was at Roe Green Junior School this morning to launch a new program  for her Heads Together initiative, wearing (as she often does for big ticket Heads Together events) the blue hues of her initiative's logo.

The announcement that Kate would be introducing a new project came last week, and it turns out that the big reveal is a new website called "Mentally Healthy Schools." According to the Heads Together explanation, the website is meant "to give teachers and school staff the clarity and practical resources they need in order to support pupils." A little more from the Heads Together description:
‘Mentally Healthy Schools’ will be a free and easy to use website for schools, drawing together reliable and practical resources to improve awareness, knowledge and confidence in promoting and supporting pupils’ mental health.
Initially tailored to the curriculum in all primary schools in England, most resources will be universal and available later this term. Further resources specific to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will be released in due course. The content will be provided in four main areas; Teaching Resources, Risks and Protective Factors, Mental Health Needs, and ‘Whole School Approach’ for school leaders.
As is generally the case, and yet never seems to get old, Kate's welcome at the school was an enthusiastic one, with kids cheering and waiving blue Heads Together flags.

The Duchess toured the school and met students and staff, and took her coat off to do it, revealing a new maternity dress from Séraphine...no SportMax! Ooops, back to the first, we meant Séraphine...it's for sure Séraphine! Le sigh. So the story here is that Kensington Palace first told reporters the dress was Séraphine, then Sport Max, and then Séraphine again. At some point, I just sip my coffee and wait for the dust to settle (this morning was running out the door for work, but...). It's Séraphine, kids.

Kate gave a lovely speech to those gathered explaining her new project:
Heads Together was initially only meant to run a  year, but the success it achieved in its first year encouraged the Royal Trio to continue on with their partnership. It must be gratifying to Kate to see the continued vitality of her brainchild.

You will recognize Kate's SportMax coat as a recycle. She first wore it in February of 2015 while pregnant with Charlotte. She was at the Emma Bridgewater pottery factory and paired it with her Florrie maternity dress, also from Séraphine.

Kate's dress has been confirmed (not justly KP) by Séraphine to be one of theirs, but is sold out. It features an empire waist with gold button detailing right above the bump, and is in the soft blue hue of the Heads Together logo.

I love the color of this SportMax coat, and I love the fabric and the way it falls, but from day one I have disliked the super thick lapels. To me, it doesn't flatter Kate at all, so although I like so many elements, I was not hoping this coat would get a recycle. Today, though, Kate really transformed the coat with a well-placed and beautiful scarf from Beulah London.

The scarf is inspired by a Henri Matisse painting, which I love! Kate has been wearing Beulah for years. You may not know this, but Kate dated Rupert Finch while at St. Andrews. They only dated briefly, and he was a guest at Kate's wedding to William. Rupert is a solicitor and is now married to Natasha Rufus Isaacs, who is the co-founder of Beulah London.  They have two absolutely beautiful children together.

Kate polished off her look (an possibly signaled the importance of the event) with her stunning tanzanite earrings and necklace, and wore her Mallory pumps with matching Muse clutch--both in navy suede.

The verdict is definitely a win, despite the coat, which I don't love. I think, again, that the scarf really added the oomph to save the coat. The color is so gorgeous, the material looks luxe, and the scarf distracted from the oversized lapels. Séraphine always scores, and this dress was no exception. I even liked Kate's hair today!! What's happened to me. ;) It's a win, all y'all!

As promised on Facebook this morning, this is the interview with Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank:

  1. I agree with you Jane, the coat looked so much better with the scarf this time. It just completely changed the look. I wasn't a fan of Kate's hair - but I didn't like it when she had it long with this jacket either... perhaps her hair is a struggle when she's pregnant - and just has its moments.

  2. I really appreciate what Kate, Will, and Harry are doing for mental health — it’s clear that this is really important to them. I love that they don’t just do things to do them. They pick areas where they can make a real difference, and do it thoughtfully. The speech William gave today was just further illustration of that.

  3. I hope Kate will start to accessorize more with scarves--this one looks perfect with the coat.

    1. Yes, more scarves please, Kate! :) The Beulah scarf here made the coat look so much better this time around.

    3. Agree! The scarf is gorgeous! Have been wondering for ages why she never wears scarves even when it's freezing.

    4. I love this scarf and thought it was a more balanced look with the larger lapels.

  4. Surprisingly for me and her many coats I'm not fond of, this is a coat I do like and especially if those are side pockets. I am just not a fan of scarves either but again I like this one with the whole blue color coordinated outfit including jewelry and shoes. Kate nailed everything including hair. I prefer her hair longer but the curls seem less. She needs to lose those curls at this hair length. All my opinion for what it's worth.

Thank you for pointing out the matching vs the logo or I tend to not be so observant unfortunately. Her public speaking is sure so improved. Well done Kate.

    1. Aren't they just lovely? They remind me of William and Kate when they got engaged. You can tell that they are best friends as well as soulmates. I totally understand why Andrew, Fergie and even the Queen are over the moon over this union.

  6. The scarf definitely elevated this otherwise 'meh' coat. I heard a little rumor on Twitter that Beulah jacked the price of the scarf back up to it's original full price, despite them having put it on sale before that. I suppose it makes sense, since they would be needing to do a whole new batch of manufacturing rather than dumping leftovers? If they just raised the price on the stock they had left, then that really doesn't seem cool to me. I have also heard from some that Beulah scarves are expensive but not of high quality, so I've hesitated to buy one.

    1. I think it's a bit tacky if they did that. Kate has worn the brand several times so it's not like they need to capitalize on the connection to this particular item. If the scarf was on sale they should have let it sell out at that price then charged full price for the next shipment they got in. To be honest such behavior makes me think less of the brand.

  7. Jane, I want to say "thank you" for blogging. While I follow two other blogs on Catherine, your's is the one I check first and the only one I thoroughly read. I so appreciate your thoughts, kind opinions, perspective, fun tidbits and different photos. I love the tone of your blog. Please don't ever stop!!

  8. Catherine looks so beautiful in this outfit. I love the dress. It is my favourite maternity dress Catherine has worn in all her three pregnancies. It is chic and speaks to the fact that maternity wear does not have to look like a sack.

  10. What a great initiative! Kudos to Kate & the Royal Foundation, for helping to start this website as a tool & resource for teachers & staff, which will help children/young people with their mental health. I recall reading that Kate wanted to become a teacher & you can clearly see her love for children, so this project is right up her alley. I hope Heads Together continues to grow in leaps & bounds. There’s a lot more that needs to be done in mental health & every little bit counts to breaking down the stigma, & helping people before things become a bigger problem down the line.

  12. Kate looked lovely and the whole ensemble went well together - even though I have to join in on the side of not liking this coat much. The scarf is gorgeous. The Heads Together initiative is a really wonderful project for them to focus on and I'm so happy they're continuing on with it. What a terrific resource for teachers and I love that they are tailoring the website to fit the specific school curriculums.

Eugenie and Jack are adorable together. They couldn't wipe the smiles off their faces and seem to be truly in love. I think he is charming. I think their interview was much more genuine than Harry & Meghan's who always seemed to be trying to conceal a part of every answer. J&E just let their happiness exude and will be a fun royal couple to watch.

2018 is going to be a huge royal year. Two new babies and two weddings! HM must be overjoyed!

  13. I do like both the coat and the dress. Although I don't dislike the coat on its own I think the scarf definitely improves the look. Her her is getting longer too, yay!!! :)

  14. I loved Kate's blue ensemble today and yesterday. But yesterday what stood out to me was how much she improved in public speaking. She has become much more confident in her role and carries it out with much class and ease. I thought William also delivered a very powerful speech that is worth mentioning.

  15. I'm noticing a new level of confidence with our Duchess. Her public speaking is improving and she seems much more comfortable with her engagements. Could it be her new secretary?

    1. If Kate's personal confidence is dependent on who her employee is then it's not very genuine confidence. Maybe it's the old adage that practice makes perfect?

    2. I think it's time-in. :-) But I do see a difference and not just in speaking but her body language is less "cautious", if that makes sense.

    3. The new secretary seems to bring professionalism and a well designed project; I credit her with fleshing out this new initiative with and for Kate. What a great idea: Mentally Healthy Schools that supports students and teachers. It gives Kate's work real substance with this and the Heads Together project. Kate might contribute directly to the lives of the children and teachers. That may well give her more confidence. I agree that this coat works much better with the scarf. Kate looked great today, and as Jane said, the jewelry says she is a senior player in a senior role with a senior custom-made project that she can revisit year after year, looking to the future of her role.

    4. I don't think her confidence isn't genuine. I think she might have a new mentor in Ms Quinn. There is nothing wrong with learning new tips from an experienced adviser that may help the Duchess in her professional role. It seems to me, Kate is combining her experience from these past few years as a new royal and possibly guidance from Ms. Quinn - which is wonderful to see. I also think it's great that she's finding a cause she is excited about.

  16. Kate looks fabulous today. I love everything about this outfit, and her hair is perfect. Plus, she has really been honing her speech making skills. Just great.
Congratulations to Princess Eugenie and her fiancé, Jack. What a marvelous year for all of them.
