Kate and William Pictured at Sandringham Church

Sunday, January 7, 2018

I was just thinking this morning that it was high time for the first post of 2018 on the blog, and Kate obliged nicely. With just two days to go before her birthday, the Duchess of Cambridge was pictured this morning walking to St. Mary Magdalene Church in Norfolk with Prince William and her grandfather-in-law, the Duke of Edinburgh.

I thought last weekend that we might get a peek at the Cambridges heading to church, but there was no sign of them on the 31st. It was New Year's Eve, and I think it is probable that Wills, Kate, and the kids were in Bucklebury with the Middletons, or even on holiday in Mustique. We generally see some travel pictures when the family slips away, but it is always possible they were able to get out under the radar, as they did for their ski holiday several years ago. I did hear that Pippa and James Matthews were spotted heading to Mustique, and although I didn't confirm that, if they went, I would bank on the rest of the clan having been there also. I wondered if they'd go to Mustique over NYE, because their regular holiday at the end of January will be preempted by the Cambridges' trip to Sweden and Norway. In any event, it is possible Kate is back from some fun in the sun, and she is looking happy and relaxed.

This is her Moloh coat from Christmas 2014 while pregnant with Princess Charlotte. It's the company's Turpin Tweed and was described as having a Napoleonic flavor. I think it works really well with Kate's coloring, and contrasts nicely against the green backdrop of these Sandringham walks.

Today, Kate accessorized with a new brown fur hat. It looks to be the same style as her grey hat from January 2017, and even the recent black one she wore at Sandringham on Christmas day. It could be borrowed from Carole or Pippa, who have similar hats (or maybe the same), but unless I am forgetting something, I don't think Kate has a dark fur like this. Her other brown fur has a divot pattern... So, I think this is either borrowed, or Kate just expanded her own collection.

The Duchess also carried her Chanel purse we love so much, wore her sapphire and diamond drops, and her Tod's heels. I was very surprised to see the Chanel, and paired with the oxblood pumps, it makes me wonder what she is wearing underneath the coat.

Kate also added fur cuffs to her coat, which I am really excited about. I saw cuffs like these on Rosie Londoner's Instagram in December, and I actually ordered them to give to my sister for Christmas. The ones I bought are from MANGO, and I am sure Kate's are a little more luxe, but they not only keep in the warmth, but they add a real touch of pizazz. MANGO might still have some in stock (no affiliate links here, just passing on a tip ;)) and I am sure you can find them elsewhere, too.

Pippa & James also joined the royals today
Happy 2018, All! I just got back from an extended stay with my family, which was wonderful, but hectic, and I am jumping back into the swing of things here. I am so excited that we got our first Kate sighting of the year today and looking forward to a great year of royal watching with you all! See you on the 10th (if not before), when Kate will visit Reach Academy.

Pippa wore a similar hat to the Cheltenham festival a few years ago. Perhaps Kate has borrowed from her sister? https://goo.gl/images/ww76ST

  2. I’d say the furry cuffs are on her gloves rather than her coat?

    1. I agree. And I like the way it refers to the hat and balances the ensemble.

    2. What Kate Wore identifies them as Cornelia James gloves:)

    3. Yes, i thought the same when i saw the picture!

  3. Unless photos surface I think Mustique unlikely given that the Duchess is pregnant due to risk from possibly contracting zika.

    1. I'd be pretty surprised too if Kate traveled to Mustique while pregnant. I'd also be surprised if Pippa & James went. Of course, media reports saying P&J are anxious to start a family ASAP might not be true.

    2. lizzie, I clearly recall that Kate, George and Nanny travelled to Mustique at the end of Jan., 2015, when Kate was pregnant with Charlotte. However, like yourself, I don't think she travelled there this year, or, for that matter, last year; in fact, I'm not sure the Middletons go to Mustique anymore.(After all, there's Eden Rock--or whatever might be left of it, post hurricanes.)

Onto fashion matters. Delighted to see this coat again as I quite liked it on its first appearance, back in 2014. Still like it. I also generally enjoy Cossack hats--even if Kate's aren't real fur. Such a bummer since the Queen is floating in fur coats! You'd think that she could gift old coats/pelts--much akin to old ivory--to her grandchildren and their wives.

IMO, the 'fur' cuffs Kate sported today were added to her tweed coat and were not part of her gloves; However, given the paucity of photos, I am willing to concede that the truth may lie otherwise.

I love that Kate carried a handbag--and finally got her hands back where they belong--at her sides. Call me crazy, but I do think that, at some point, she received a directive that clutches must be carried in front of her body...because when dating William, she always carried clutches properly--in one hand, resting at her side.

As for Kate's shoes, they're lovely--if you happen to be in your 60's. Those block heels quite ruin the look for me--very Queen E. I do like the colour and appreciate the workmanship, but....

So. How to evaluate this outfit, stylistically? I thumb up for the coat, hat and manner of carrying the purse, and a big one thumbs down for the 60-and-over shoes.

Is it just me, or does Kate have a hard time--for whatever reason--dressing appropriately for her age?

    3. I, too, tend to believe that both couples would have avoided it.

    4. I may be wrong JC but I don't think Zika was a known threat back in early 2015 when we know Kate went to Mustique.

Regarding the hat JC...by all reports it is "real fur." It's alpaca fur. But it reportedly comes from animals that were skinned after suffering natural deaths vs being raised & slaughtered for their fur like say, mink. So while I'm not into wearing the skin & fur of dead animals myself no matter how they died, particularly on my head, alpaca is a more "humane" fur. (Yes, I know petroleum is used for faux fur-- don't care faux fur either although I do wear microfiber boots.)

As you correctly point out JC, our ideas about fur and ivory have changed. It is hardly surprising someone of the Queen's age would own fur. Many style icons of the past such as Jackie Kennedy did also. But raising mink and other animals for their fur is still legal so far as I know. So wearing mink--even if it is an older garment--may encourage people to support the fur industry continuing to raise animals for slaughter. Kate has worn a mink hat & reportedly has worn mink-lined gloves but I hope she doesn't do that anymore. I don't think the existence of older pianos with keys of real ivory or royal orders painted on ivory or art objects of ivory cause people to want to run out & support the illegal ivory market! But to the extent there's a Kate effect" wearing mink very well may encourage others to do the same. That may seem an unfair burden to place on her but her husband does support animal conservation--efforts that MIGHT be received better by the public if his own habits re: hunting & shooting for pleasure were curtailed also. Do as I say, not as I do has never worked very well!

    5. I think it's kind of silly if people are supposed to avoid wearing perfectly good fur because trends have changed so that there's a stigma about purchasing fur from animal pelts created in the modern era. If the reason to shun fur is because if the inhumane practices employed during he time that furriers were trying to create "mass market" furs I would point out that keeping a vintage fur in the closet isn't going to bring those animals back and quite the opposite makes their death purposeless. Surely someone can make use of vintage fur while refraining from purchasing new fur from dubious origins whilst understanding the difference. Before the invention of plastic humans wore real fur out of necessity for many hundreds of years.

    6. Well anon, to each his/her own but I'd argue that killing animals (like mink, fox, chinchilla) ONLY for their fur is as inhumane today as it ever was. Maybe even more so because these days we do have many other ways to stay warm. Most fur today comes from fur farms and in order to preserve the pelts, methods of slaughter can be pretty awful. In addition, farmed animals spend their entire lives in small mesh cages. (No free range mink!) Interestingly, the UK outlawed "fur farms" back in 2000 (apparently the Queen publicly supported that Act of Parliament in a speech) but the US has not and no federal laws regulate US fur farms although much more fur is farmed in Europe & Asia than in the US. Of course, not wearing an old mink coat doesn't bring back the dead animals. But wearing an older coat says mink is fashionable today--- so if you don't have a vintage one, buy a new one! Making & selling mink coats is legal everywhere so far as I know. So the industry likely would be supported by wearing the old coat (even if new coats are made from fur farmed in another country from where the vintage coat was worn.) Displaying antique historical ivory objects is unlikely to have the same effect on the poaching of endangered animals.

    7. If people can’t distinguish between vintage and new fur then why do you assume they can distinhuish between vintage and new ivory Lizzie? Either way I still think it’s a shame to hide away beautiful or functional artifacts out of fear that someone might be inspired to act recklessly. There a lot of assumptions built into your argument.

    1. That would be amazing- lot of time for Pippa. She has put up with so much nonsense from photographers chasing her around yet she remains gracious and smiley

    2. I'm sort of wondering because, in prior outings at Sandringham, she has favored a more fitted look. Unless I missed one.... :-)

    3. I wondered that too....👶?

    4. I thought about that too and then remembered how the tied waist coat made Meghan look thick in the waist as well. It is a departure for Pippa though and it would be lovely if she and Kate had babies in the same year.

    5. Anything is possible but Pippa appeared *extraordinarily* slender (dressed in form-fitting clothes) when she visited the children's hospital in early December. So even if she is expecting, I'd be kind of surprised if she needed a noticeably looser "waist-adjustable" coat a month later. Maybe that belted style of coat is just popular now? It's not my favorite style particularly on shorter women like MM & Pippa but the style is everywhere.

  5. She looks beautiful. The furry hats suit her and the coat is one of my favourites
She is carrying a handbag with a handle--can't remember seeing her with that before.

    1. I have not noticed much of a change in Kate's purses over the years. She has a range of styles and price points but I can not imagine she would adjust her purse choices because of what Meghan carries.

    2. She's had the bag since they went to Paris last year (or even longer than that) but she may have been feeling inspired to wear it again because Meghan's top handle bags were such a success. ☺ Also glad to see this interesting bag again, such a welcome change!

I love Kate in browns, and this look particularly. The fur hats suit her and, I’m thinking, provide some coverage for her hair if she doesn’t have it professionally blow out.
I bet Pippa and James were there to celebrate her birthday, I do hope they start a family soon!

  9. Hi Jane! I was wondering if you were going to do a blog post on Meghan? I remember when Harry and Meghan got engaged, you mentioned you wanted to give your thoughts on Meghan and what its going to be like with her and Kate. Will you still be doing that?

  10. Kate looked lovely. Enjoyed seeing a new style of handbag versus her usual clutch. Especially adored seeing Pippa!! It’s been way too long, even the Daily Mail has not had any photos/ stories on her.
Did anyone see the article in the Daily Mail regarding people had hoped Prince Harry would return to long time love Chelsey Davy? I thought that was real interesting . Could it be the longevity of Chelsey & Harry’s relationship that prompted the adoration for Chelsey, like Kate & William were together 7 or 8 years before marriage? Hope you share your thoughts Jane always adore your blog.its simply the best!

  12. I am so happy to see her using her Chanel handbag again! I love the shoes and wish she would add some more shoes with a little more style than her regular pumps. She also looks wonderful in these hats and I agree with whoever said the fur at her wrists looks more like it was on her gloves. All of these accessories allow me to look past the brown coat which I couldn't do when she paired it with a brown hat, brown tights, and brown pumps. :-p

  17. I personally prefer how she styled the coat this year compared to how she accessorized it back in 2014. The furry hat and gloves look really cute and cozy and I much prefer the brown coat with the burgundy bag/shoes rather than matching brown shoes/hat/gloves.

On a different topic, I think it's great that Kate has been recycling so many outfits from her previous pregnancies. Not only because many of us like to see certain outfits again but also because it shows how sensible she is. If you own clothes from 2 pregnancies it makes absolutely no sense to go out and buy an entirely new pregnancy wardrobe. That being said, I'm sure we'll see some new outfits on their tour to Sweden, which I'm equally excited about.
