Kate Begins Her 2018 in Feltham Wearing Hobbs

Wednesday, January 10, 2018

The first official engagement of the year always carries an extra dose of excitement and anticipation. We saw Kate at St. Mary Magdalene on the 7th wearing a cozy winter ensemble, but today is the official kick-off of the year, and Kate brought her A Game.

If you love Kate and kids, baby, today was your day. There were adorable little ones everywhere and Kate was right in her element interacting with them all. These arrival photos are some of my favorites.

Today, Kate was at Reach Academy in Feltham to see the partnership between the school and one of Place2Be's well-being programs. Reach Academy caters to kids from nursery to secondary school, so the Duchess was able to a get a sense of the program across the spectrum.

Kate is, as you know, patron of Place2Be, and has been working with the charity for many years. The Duchess visited with the children at the school and chatted with teachers and support staff.

Some events lend themselves better to photos than others, and today just seemed like a lucky day, because there were so many picture perfect snaps:

Kate is known to be a dog lover, and she spent some time in the crisp January air visiting with a pup in training to be a therapy dog. Two unrelated comments while we are on this photo. One, does it look like Kate had her hair in a pony and just let it down, gave it some lift at the crown, and called it a day? Second...am I the only one who thinks Kate has trimmed her hair again? Say it ain't so! Kate, have you not heard our plaintive cries? Bring back the luscious locks of 2012. Even if just for a while. :)

Even if she isn't growing her hair out, Kate did bring back the floral "Florrie" from Séraphine. This might be Kate's most popular maternity dress among fans, and with good reason. The mix of blues and turquoise is such pretty color scheme on Kate, and the empire waist designed for her figure skirts some of the problems we have with the off-the-rack pieces Kate sometimes tries to adapt. Kate wore this dress twice while pregnant with Charlotte, so this is its third wear.

Kate has removed her coat each time she has worn this dress, which makes me think she really likes it, and feels pretty and confident wearing it. When people wonder why Kate keeps her coat on, my quiet response is, that's the outfit. She likes the coat, and the dress is, for all intents and purposes, just an under-garment. I definitely have ensembles like that.  This kind of day highlights that Kate can take her coat off, but only when that's the "vision" for the ensemble. As I say, a battle plan that has my full support.

This morning she paired the dress with a new dark blue coat. This is Hobbs London's Gianna and it is absolutely gorgeous! I mean really, this coat makes my jaw drop. Its incredible "French navy" color and its beautiful texture...wow. According to the label's description, the coat takes inspiration from a traditional riding coat, and it is that very sharp tailoring that makes it work well with the princess's bump.

Kate accessorized with her Muse clutch and wore her Georgia Jimmy Choos. Those sparklers at her ears are, of course, her sapphire and diamond drops.

The verdict today is a big win. This "French navy" blue is stunning on Kate, and although (as many of you have noted) Kate sometimes strikes out trying to make a non-maternity coat work with her changed figure, this one really scored in my book! As I say, it seems it was the tight tailoring on top (and maybe just some fashion gold that we all strike every now and again), but it fit well and she looked trim and chic. This is a great start to 2018!

  1. Oh Jane, I 100% agree about this coat. It's glorious. More than makes up for the blue and white MaxMaras from last pregnancy!! They were not my favorite. I was just thinking the other day that I hoped this Seraphine would make another appearance. Yay. I'm also hoping we see the Jojo Maman Bebe from her visit to Downton. Do you have any predictions?

    1. I absolutely agree! This coat is much better than her previous MaxMara coats. The colour is stunning on Kate. I loved the Jojo Maman Bebe coat, too!

  2. I agree! What a beautiful coat, but the dress isn't my cup of tea.

The few front pages in London that I've seen (via Twitter) don't seem to have Kate or her event on them, and I feel like usually I notice that they do the day after she's seen out and about. I wonder if she's moving into a new phase; she certainly comes off as an old pro now, confident and comfortable without a bit of nerves and wearing variations of her comfort zone. I'm sure she'd be a bit relieved to see a bit less media hoopla. Or maybe I have the wrong impression?

  3. Yes it's a lovely coat, but did she really need ANOTHER double breasted navy coat? She has SO many coats she could have repeated today especially the ones she wore in early 2015 when pregnant with Charlotte. I just don't get her need to constantly wear new and similar styles. Fashion is the second highest polluting industry in the world and Kate sure is a contributor given her major influence on fashion how much women love to buy and copy her style. I find it ironic that her father-in-law is a conservationist yet he pays for all of her clothes. The royal family is full of hypocrisy.

    1. She is our Princess - the girl who can! And seeing her in something new and beautiful brightens my mundane office day. I love the coat Linda

    2. The human kind is full of contradictions and hypocrisy... Every time we surf on the internet, every time we take our car, or a plane, every time we use the heating or the television even when we eat, we are polluting. The fashion industry creates wealth, employment... It is not so easy. We can be worried about the world we are creating, the consumerism, the pollution. But let's not lie it at Kate's door. And if she buys a blue coat similar to one she already owns, it is in fact a clever way to lessen the "Kate effect".

  4. She hit this one out of the park today! I love this color of blue and she looks fantastic in it! Kate and the children are such a wonderful mix and then there was the added benefit of the adorable pup. Yep, today was a big win!

  5. Love the coat but not a fan of the dress..a bit too busy imo. I wish she would either grow her hair longer and return to her beautiful full curls OR go slightly shorter and style in a sleek and dramatic straight style. Still a beautiful woman regardless. Cerca 2012 she always had such a sun-kissed glow..do you think she's forefitted what I imagine were spray tans (when not pregnant of course)? As a new mom I completely understand if so..they can be quite time consuming and I'm afraid of it rubbing off and onto my babies face while cuddling her!

    1. Kate could not possibly do as Emma Watson and detail what she wears on Instagram. She is not an actress or a model, a influencer or a it girl. She is a member of the RF, representing the queen and the UK. She must favour British fashion but she shouldn't make publicity for a brand even if it is green and humane.

    2. "Humane" and "green" aren't actually defined terms but rather marketing devices, just there are plenty of farmers who grow food using organic methods but don't have the "organic" label sticker on their product because they don't have the time, money or desire to go through the long and expensive paperwork process to get that sticker. Customer demand for trendy marketing labels has put smaller operations who are sustainable and organic out of business because they can't afford to jump through the marketing hoops. Before you start judging people for not wearing what you think they should maybe do some actual research into what those labels truly mean.

  7. Those shoes! I wouldn't be able to walk in most of her shoes but these lower-heeled beauties are perfect for the outfit, for Kate, and for me to borrow from her closet! I love the coat but am not a huge fan of the dress while conceding that she looks very pretty in it. Kate could look pretty in a sack. Thank you for finding the time to post, Jane.

  8. Beautiful lady! This is a personal preference: I'm not keen on too much eye make up. I'd love to see Catherine with less liner and heavy eye shadow. I'm probably in the minority here. Admittedly I am conservative with make up but I think so much eye make up best suited for an evening/wedding look. Otherwise thumbs up for today's ensemble.

  9. While I loved the coat, the dress is not my cup of tea either, I couldn't resist a yawn. Sorry! Can this get any more boring?

  13. I missed this yesterday but what a fabulous outing it was! Gorgeous coat and sensible dress. But best of all, I love her interaction with the kids. She was really in the element. Love the video of her talking about dinosaurs with the little boy!

  14. I love this elegant outfit. Kate is always so natural and lovely with children. What a beautiful puppy, great pictures. A wonderful start to the new year.

  15. As much as I enjoyed the coat, I disliked the dress--dark/muddy, and it looks as if she's just about outgrown it. Time to wear clothing to fit the LAST trimester? which I suspect she's about to enter. Evidence: .when she wore the dress back in 2015, it was already February, and she was due to give birth in April, yet, the dress fit much better.

And speaking of comparisons, I saw a photo of her in this dress, when pregnant with Charlotte, which convinced me that she looks much better with hair this length; when longer, she only looked terrific down when she was using --her professional, and much more expensive hairdresser, and only when he styled her hair the day of the engagement. (Kate's attempts to style her own, especially when it had gone too long without a cut, resulted in those horrible ringlets we loathed. So...until she can afford same on a regular basis, by a topnotch hairstylist, I prefer this, more manageable length. And it's still long enough to wear in an up-do, yet, thankfully, probably too short to warrant wearing in a half-up, half-down do, which does her no favours, IMO.

Relieved that I've finally got that sorted!

  16. While I'm not sure why Kate needed another new navy blue coat, I agree that this one is very pretty and stylish. A very elegant coat! Also, I've always loved this dress. It's one of my favorites. I love the colors, and I'm glad Kate wore it again. But most of all, I'm very happy to see that Kate actually took her coat off this time. What a nice surprise!!

  17. I love the long hair and curls. Longer hair suits her.

  18. Well, blue is my favorite color so I can understand. 😊😍

  19. She probably took her coat off because she is too hot to comfortable keeping it on. She has a furnace growing inside her after all and pregnancy makes most women feel over heated even when ambient temperatures are cool to cold (speaking from experience).
