Kate Recycles Her SuperStar Séraphine Ensemble

Wednesday, January 24, 2018

This afternoon, Kate was out and about again as she made two stops in rainy London Town. A British afternoon is, of course, an American morning, and my day was made before I walked into work when I saw Kate arrive at The Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute at King's College wearing her Florrie Séraphine maternity dress paired with the periwinkle blue Natasha, also by Séraphine!

The Duchess was helped out of the car by one of her PPOs who was concealing and carrying...a taser on his belt. Don't make any rash moves around this dude.

I love this shot shared by @kingsloPPN: The meeting of the umbrellas. Catherine Quinn was notably present for today's events, too, for those who have been asking:

Kate toured the labs and learned about the biological influences that new mothers face both before and after they deliver. My sister works in neuroscience, and she likes to send the occasional Snapchat to our family group with various pictures of the slides from her microscope machine! I'm telling you all, it's completely baffling and my eyes glaze over. I hope Kate was ready to smile politely through the majority of this--or she might be a faster learning than I am. ;) But, it's not easy stuff, I'll tell ya!

After her tour of the lab, Kate met with researchers working in perinatal psychiatry.

After her first stop, Kate made her way to the Bethlem Royal Hospital to visit their Perinatal Service. According to KP's Twitter, "the unit specializes in the treatment of antenatal and postnatal mental health illnesses including postnatal depression and post- partum psychosis."

The princess chatted with new and expectant moms who are benefiting from the hospital's work in pre and postnatal depression.

KP

I love when Kate visits with mothers and children. She always lets her hair down a little (figuratively, ;)) and is even more warm and accessible than usual.

Let's talk fashion! One of you asked on Instagram if this coat is by Séraphine. It is! Kate debuted this on January 19, 2015. The Duchess was booked for a day of engagements in Kensington, and arrived on the crisp, sun-dappled morning wearing what was one of her All-Star maternity looks. Remember this? Wow.

Today, she recycled both the dress and the coat together, and added my favorite twist on a recycle, which is the ponytail, bien sûr! I love to see a new hairstyle when Kate pulls a repeat, and when an ensemble is as picture perfect as this Séraphine duo, you want the perfect recycle.

Kate carried her Jaeger quilted clutch and wore her Georgia Jimmy Choos. She completed her look with her sapphire and diamond drops. Her best accessory was her bump, which seems to be showing more at this point in her pregnancy than it did with Charlotte. It's getting me very excited for April!

KP
This is such a big win. First, it was a win because of the subject matter. Kate is really in her element with mothers and their babies. It's so clear that Kate is an incredible mom, and that motherhood is truly her passion, so when she works in these areas we really see her heart bursting through. That's such a beautiful thing, to me.

From a fashion perspective, it was another home run. This coat and this dress together are so beautiful, and as I said above, (and as you know) I always want a little tweak to the hair when Kate recycles. It gives a fresh look at an old favorite. Everyone has a coat or a dress from Kate's maternity collection they want to see again, but this was the ensemble I have been hoping for, so it's just scoring in every category. :)

I think the next time we see Kate is the Scandinavian tour next week! This month has really flown by, but I can't wait to see Kate on a mini tour. I'll be back this weekend, though, with a little post, and in the meantime, see you on Instagram... ;)

  1. Great engagement!
Kate’s confidence has grown and that is lovely to see.
Fashion wise,I was disappointed. This coat did not flatter her the first time or now.My favorite repeat was the pink Mulberry coat.It really suits her and she looks very smart in it!
On a side note, could it be possible that she is expecting twins?

    1. I really think she is (expecting twins, that is!). She looks a lot bigger this time around. I do hope she is :)

    2. The coat is pulling in places it didn't the first time but I think this baby might just be more comfortable this time around thanks to George and Charlotte.

    3. It is normal, although not mendatory, to get a bit bigger with each pregnancy. You get older obviously, and previous babies already wear out the stomach region. I also had the biggest bump with my third, although I gained less than with #1 and #2.
The baby also seems to sit a bit lower, maybe this makes it appear a bit bigger than it actually is.
Anyway, I wish Kate all the best for the remainder of the pregnancy. I found the third one the toughest, with two small kids etc.

    4. I'm assuming Kiwi and Soft do not have any children?

    5. No twins (sadly!:). The statement that Kensington Palace released to announce Kate's due date/month specifically mentioned "baby" not "babies". At that point Kate would have had several scans that would have revealed if there were twins. There's always next time!!!:)

    6. The stomach muscles and the uterine wall are both stretched by each pregnancy and you start to show earlier. Those muscles also aren't quite strong enough to hold that baby up as well. I don't think there are twins. She's carrying lower so the maternity clothes aren't fitting the same way they did last time. I also think she's wearing this coat and dress at a later stage in her pregnancy than the last time.

    7. Anon 8:14, nope, no children yet! But thanks all for the explanations re Kate looking “bigger” this pregnancy. I just thought (wishful thinking) that it would be sweet if she had twins (a boy & a girl) like CP Mary :)

    8. Alas, no twins per the KP statement, but it would have been nice. With Kate recycling her maternity wardrobe (as opposed to buying new ones), I often think they plan this to be their last baby. It's sensible. But I would love for them to have a large family - 4 children like the Queen!

  2. Catherine is beautiful as always. When we hadn't seen this baby blue coat earlier, I thought that perhaps we would see it in Sweden or Norway. Some recycles mixed with new attire. Along with the white coat she wore for the visit with the Downton Abbey cast. But somehow she is carrying differently this pregnancy and this coat is straining at the buttons. I don't know if it would have worked in a week. I also don't know if the white coat has more give and will still serve. Now I feel we will see all new clothes on the upcoming trip.

  3. I highly doubt she is expecting twins. She must be around 26 weeks pregnant by now and she looks about that. I am also sure that it would be announced if they knew she was expecting twins...the Royals respect privacy, but they are not coy.

  4. Lovely recycle, and even more intriguing charity - I agree with Jane; Kate does seem comfortable around other mothers and it's nice. I'm excited for Scandinavia!

  5. I am not a fan of the coat. But I tend to think Kate often looks washed out in ice blue. My main objection though is the style-- specifically, the seam across the bustline. That construction can be problematic for many women to wear because it tends to press the bustline down. The effect is even greater when the fit is a bit too tight as appears here (& would often be the case during later stages of any pregnancy.) So it seems an odd detail in maternity wear.

I don't think Kate is having twins. KP said "a baby" & Kate has none of the statistical predictors of twins (race, age [borderline], pre-pregnancy BMI, height, twin births in her female relatives) & as far as we know, no fertility drugs. I think she's just bigger the 3rd time around which is common.

    1. I think her grandmother Valerie née Glassborrow Middleton had a twin sister named Mary. So, technically her great paternal grandmother did have twins!😆

    2. But,I don’t think she is having twins either.I just wondered in which month of pregnancy does the mother find out how many children she will give birth to.

    3. Typically twins are discovered at the "dating" ultrasound at 10-12 weeks. They can be seen on US as early as 5-6 weeks if one is done but the 2nd fetus can be missed that early or if a second one is seen then, it may not survive until the dating US (Vanishing twin syndrome supposedly occurs in 20-30% of twin conceptions.) In any event, by the time KP made the due date announcement it seems quite likely the number of fetuses was known.

You are right about Kate's great grandmother giving birth to twins Candice.I think usually closer female relatives than great grandmothers are considered good predictors but I suppose Michael could have passed on a genetic tendency to Kate and/or Pippa.

  6. I don't like the horizontal seam at the second button. I didn't notice it when she wore the coat before. I guess her hair was down and covered it.

    Kate looks relaxed and happy!

  7. Hello!
First time commenting. Love this site and am a dedicated visitor. I also don't believe Catherine is carrying twins bc of the fact that this is her third pregnancy. We ladies seem to "pop"a bit earlier it seems with each pregnancy. This is not to allude that she is somehow out of shape or that she won't get back to her gorgeous figure (which is beautiful now), but just something I've noticed with mothers of multiple children and my own experiences.

I love her blue outfit for the visit to the hospital and research labs. I do see how the strained buttons at the bust to seem to flatten and maybe could be a bit uncomfortable/awkward feeling for Catherine? Overall, I think it's a hit and I love her elegant ponytail.

  8. I love it when she has a pony. It just makes her look more like us. Like a normal mom getting dressed up but hasnt got enough time for perfect hair but can still pull off looking presentable.

  9. I would love for her (just for fun) to bring back that black and white dress she wore right before giving birth to George. It's the one where she broke the champagne for the new ship? I love that event because Kate didn't give a damn about it all that day she just wanted the baby to arrive!

It was a dalmation print coat from Hobbs. It was a great coat but I preferred its second outing when Kate was pregnant with Charlotte. She wore it to the Turner Contemporary in Margate. So much better without the daft black hat http://fromberkshiretobuckingham.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/kate-in-kent-duchess-visits-margate-in.html?m=1

  10. I love this coat on Kate. The color is demure and gentle. I think she looks beautiful! More importantly, I love that she's explored the psychological struggles perinatally. There's still much to be learned about post partum depression and the psychological impact of hormones to women who already have mental problems to begin with. I love the science behind it. It ties in well with her next engagement too - the one with Action on Addiction.

  11. I love the coat! As someone who has a light complexion with dark hair, I avoid light pastel colors in the winter because it drowns me out, And for that reason I think this coat would be preferable in the spring. I think the outfit would look better with a subtle tan and nude pumps..I find the navy shoes a bit too contrasting. I know people complain when Kate's hair is in her face but I strongly disagree--i love her hair down (I think ponytails are for the gym!). Regardless, Kate looks beautiful and happy. Am I the only one who thinks she's been looking a bit pale lately? Wonder if she's still suffering from morning sickness?

I think nude shoes would make the overall look more Easter/Spring-like. I wouldn't mind seeing this coat with black opaque hose and accessories.

  12. I think this is a fabulous cause to highlight. Kate comes under fire for having little life or work experience prior to marrying William - but what she does know about is having babies -and you can see it in her genuine interest here with the people she is meeting.

  13. She is also quite knowledgeable about sport. You can see the spark in her eye at sports events.

  14. Don't often post, but I follow your blog daily. I love your pictures and the details you provide. Kate looks lovely in blue, and I have to say that both looks works for her. I'm a sucker for a pony so I'm going for the second look. Her bump is growing and she is glowing. Its' going to be a big year for the BRF. Also, can't wait for the Sweden/Norway tour.

  15. She is not just all about babies and sports She has a degree in Art History which she uses in work with several of her patronages. It will also make her a Queen Consort who can have informed appreciation of the vast Royal collection. She is a talented photographer who has taken photos of her family that will have a place in history. She is an instructor-level SCUBA diver. She has an ability to work with experts in multiple fields in making detailed plans for her projects, yet is able to communicate in the simplest mother-to-mother context.
I could go on, but I think my point is clear.
Although people relate easily to her, she is not your average girl next door, soccer mom--not that there's anything wrong with that.
I think the tendency to sum up her interests and abilities as children and sports only is to greatly mis construe her true worth and value to the Royal Family and her country. I think her essence includes a large dollop of humility-a quality sometimes lacking in British royals. That may be a reason why the media/internet play the children and sports card with her so often. She is definitely not a self-promoter.

    2. Yes! Plus I'm sure Kate has multiple interests and talents we don't even know about yet. I'm glad she does focus on children and physical fitness (among other things); I think that's fabulous because those are super important issues.

  16. I agree with you that she is not a self promoter. If she was, there would not be anything wrong with that.It is just not her personality.
Of course, she is more than sports and babies. But the public doesn’t see much more than that. She doesn’t need to share her entire self with us,naturally. But the public bases their opinion on what they see.So to an extent it is correct to say that publically she is about mental health and sports.
Privately, she does not owe us a single thing and she should not be criticized because of that.
As for her photography, it is nothing special.

I feel like the coat suits her much better than the last time she wore it because her belly is bigger now :)
Looking forward to the scandinavian tour, especially meetings with the Swedish and Norwegian royals.

  18. You have a point about public image being the basis for some of the remarks. What forms and perpetuates that public image? Few of us know her personally. For most of us, what we read and see in the "news" is what we have to base our image of Kate on. They print whatever angle or view will sell the most papers. With a little thought and research one can see a more complete, multi-faceted version than the one spoon-fed us by the media outlets.
I notice you said that she is publically about mental heath and sports. That is likely true. She has multiple interests and talents; she has chosen to focus on some of those, especially childhood mental health. She was given the tennis job because she had a life-long interest in the sport. It basically involves a few days attendance a year but is highly promoted because Wimbledon is a popular event. So we remember that. She is involved in efforts to encourage children to engage in sports as a tool for improving their lives. She attends one-two sailing events a year, which are connected to both a patronage and a very popular British sportsman. The marathon was a one-time event she was involved in because of Heads Together. Except for possibly the tennis patronage, all her public involvement in sports uses sports as a means to an end not a focus. That point is rarely made in news stories. It's...here's Kate doing another sporty activity.

As a side point, it didn't help that the KP Twitter Heading had an image for months of sporty Kate wearing her HT sweatband. Why not an image of her meeting with the King of the Netherlands or at a memorial in France--dignified and capable. The marathon was one event. She has had many meetings with world leaders, yet sporty Kate was the image promoted--by an outlet responsible for presenting her official public image.
I imagine the image was used because it shows all three of the KP-based royals. A convenient but not very well thought-out choice, in my opinion.

Contrasting images? Youth vs. experience? Casual vs. regal? Need I go on? :-)

    2. Exactly, royalfan. Actually, as of yesterday, that image is still in the heading. It was just moved to the side. And the marathon was when? All the significant events and appearances since...
One frequently repeated image will be remembered over many once-shown images. It doesn't really matter what other images are shown in the body of the site.
I doubt it is just an over-sight.

    3. I do see things changing, but for some time it appeared that W/K/H were being presented as junior partners of the Firm. Gave me vibes of the children's table at Thanksgiving. ;-)

I wonder how it will play out now that Harry has found Meghan. Will each couple have their own unique place in the Firm, or will they be expected to sit together at the same proverbial table?

      Delete
    4. The children's table or even downstairs at the staff table.

I think there will be some shared events , because of the Foundation. However, I expect them to mostly go their separate ways with their personal interests. I think Harry is ready to form an identity with Meghan, separate from his older brother and wife.
It hasn't been that long since my brother introduced me as his "baby sister." We are two and one-half years apart. Ha!
Old habits are hard to break and William has always been big brother to Harry. It will be interesting to watch the Harry-Meghan dynamic develop. Will she move into William's role or will Harry take the reins?

    4. Every time they have a tour I wonder what the tabloids and republicans will come up with to detract from the success of their efforts. I don't think the recent hair tidbits are it. Although, focusing on her hair gives the same impression as the sporty Kate stories--the plastic doll image promoted by one writer.
Sometimes it seems as though stories are stashed away, to be revealed at the most damaging time. ( not referring to the hair stories here)It wouldn't be so bad if just the tabloids picked those stories up; unfortunately, the royalwriters spread it in their social media accounts, if not in their news stories. For example, the Canada II tour and the disgruntled hotel employees who had wanted a photo with the Cambridges. I can't believe how that tidbit was exploited and passed on and taken seriously. The open-toed painted toes angle from the visit to Poland. A fragment from a multi-faceted experience is used to negate the impact of the whole experience.

    5. It looks like first up is the well-worn Kate fur/ William conservation non-issue. One Kate site spent half the comment section elaborating on the subject. When it was revealed that the pom-poms (cuffs, collar) were actually faux-fur--no one apologised or suggested that facts should be clarified before wholesale condemnation and a few actually tried to justify their criticisms.
Ironically, William's pom-pom was not mentioned.
