Kate Wears Boden for Visit to Great Ormond Street Hospital

Wednesday, January 17, 2018

After a busy day in Coventry yesterday, Kate was out again this morning. The Duchess began her day at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London to open a new centre for children's health. Before any of the official duties began, Kate unveiled a "Designer Debut" as she emerged from her chauffeured car wearing British label Boden!

Apparently, this entrance is not accessible to the public, so Kate had a relatively quiet arrival - a change of pace form yesterday's waving fans in Coventry - but every now and again I don't mind a more subdued arrival, particularly when there is lots of space for beautiful arrival pictures.

Kate's visit included the usual types of activities you'd expect, like touring the facility, meeting staff and patients, and sitting in on the various therapies and activities the hospital offers. Among them was an art activity that Kate spent some time observing.

KP
She also told one very cute little guy that princess Charlotte likes olive pasta? I am not sure what olive pasta is...pasta made with olives, pasta with olive sauce. Whatever it is, it sounds delicious and serves as further proof that Charlotte has it together.

Kate was on hand to officially open the centre, which she did with a few accompanying remarks. This might be her most relaxed and confident speech I have seen her give. She is speaking in a more natural cadence and didn't appear to use notes. Public speaking is clearly not something that comes easily to Kate. I have been focusing a lot on Myers-Briggs recently, and I think it is relatively clear she is an introvert, which is fine! I think her public remarks of late have been increasingly laid back and come across as thoughtful and sweet.
Fashion! I am really excited to see Kate wearing Boden this morning. Boden is such a fantastic brand and I shop it often. This coat is the company's Lena and is hitting all my happy buttons, chiefly via the ruffled cuffs and collar. I am really into the ruffled look, as most of you know. The only drawback for me with this ensemble is the orange tone. Boden describes this color as "Red Pop," but like her Armani suit, it is photographing orange.

Kate paired this coat with brown accessories, which is a fun little twist on her usual nude or black. She carried her suede Emmy London clutch, and Giulia suggested that she is wearing the same heels she wore to the RAF Valley in 2016, which were Russell & Bromley's "Pinpoint" pumps.

Many of you will be happy to know that the dress underneath is her delicate peach dress worn with her Tara Jarmon coat on her wedding anniversary in 2013! I have the dress listed on Kate's Clothes as made by an "independent dressmaker." I know this is an ensemble that many had hoped would get a recycle. Obviously the coat is a little too spring for a January wear, but it is fun to see the dress today, even if it is just peeking out!

Kate brought out her Annoushka Baroque pearls for the morning, which are certainly fan favorites!

This is a big win. I love the details that are both on point for this season, but also very much in Kate's style profile. I also love where the hemline is hitting. It's not swamping her, but it isn't uncomfortably short. It is actually a universally flattering length (pregnant or not) and makes her legs look trim and picture perfect. Both today's Boden and yesterday's Mulberry share this hemline and it is working so well!

Interesting to note that Kate didn't wear her sapphire engagement ring today, or her diamond Eternity band. I think this is the only time we have seen her simply sport her gold wedding band.

Kate has tennis this afternoon, so tune back in when you have time!

  1. Kate looked great today! I know for some women when they are pregnant, their hands and fingers swell, so perhaps that's why she didn't wear her engagement / eternity rings today?

When watching the arrival video, a young blonde woman gets out of the car with her, and then hovers in the background for a bit. It wasn't her new Private Secretary or any PPO we've seen. Any idea who it might be, Jane?

    1. We have seen the blond accompanying the new private secretary when Kate had an engagement a couple of times. I guess it is the PS's assistant.

    2. I noticed the blond woman too and she really didn't look as if she were all that confident in her role. We seem to rarely see this new power assistant. I miss Rebecca.

    3. For all the grief Rebecca got for being caught in photos with Kate this woman's attempts to shuffle out of the frame were far more awkward!

  2. I think it might be a case of swollen fingers due to pregnancy that Kate is unable to wear her other rings. Although this wasn't the case with the first two children, as they say every pregnancy is different!

    1. The Daily Mail article says that she was not wearing her ring in compliance with the hospital’s policy regarding minimal jewelry. While they aren’t always the most credible of sources, this seems like it would be a reasonable explanation, especially since she is wearing the ring at her afternoon engagement with the kids group associated with Wimbledon.

    2. I am pretty sure it was due to hygiena.

  3. I'm curious about why she always buttons her coat all the way up to the tippity-top. It would look cuter if she'd leave at least one button open. I understand not wanting to let photographers have a view down inside, but it looks kind of fussy or prim to me.

  4. Wonder if she decided not to wear the ring because she is visiting a hospital and it may require lots of hand washing/sanitizer before visiting patients. May make it easier than wearing the ring and then removing it to wash hands. It could also be because her hands are swelling too!

  5. I think the lack of rings may be hospital policy. Lots of germs and bacteria lurk in set jewelry.

I thought this was her most natural speech to date as well. Probably, she prepared a lot for it but it gave the impression of being off the cuff remarks which was nice.

I hope this hospital is an eventual patronage for Kate. Its a perfect fit for her.

As far as the clothes, not quite a fan.
Like many, I've been hoping to see this dress again but it isnt as lovely without that beautiful peach coat. I love and own Boden, and dressed my children in Mini Boden when they were little but just do not like this coat on Kate right now. Again, I think she needs to be in maternity wear now. This coat is making her look bigger and more broad than she is instead of pregnant. A well designed maternity coat would be wonderfully flattering. Also, wish she had taken her coat off inside. There are pictures out there with the coat sleeves pushed up and its not a good look.

    1. I just don't get it, either. (maternity wear)
      The speech ... supercalifragilisticexpialigetisch :-)
Jane, thank you very much for brighten up my days with your terrific work!

    2. Its frustrating, Susanne. There are beautiful maternity coats available that would look so much better.

    3. Perhaps she is avoiding maternity coats because it will be easier to recycle non-maternity items in the future. My guess......

    4. I could believe that royalfan except that some of the "regular" pieces she has worn would need to be seriously recut if she was going to fit them to her usual non-pregnant figure, at which point it seems to make more sense to just have a true maternity wardrobe to be recycled (as she did with several other recent coats). She also hasn't ever recycled maternity pieces post-pregnancy for any public appearance that I'm aware of.

    5. I'm with anon, royalfan. She would have to have these clothes completely recut to fit her non pregnant figure. They would swim on her otherwise. Basically, she's buying these bigger non maternity items and using them as her maternity wardrobe but they never look quite right. I have to say I'm puzzled by it.

    6. Good points, ladies. I guess Kate's reasoning is her own, but overall it appears that modesty is a goal. I do respect that.

  6. She may have had swollen fingers this morning, or the hospital may have asked her not to wear it. I remember a hospital visit shortly after her marriage where they had asked her to remove it while meeting patients.

  7. Love this! And I love that Kate did some interesting color coordinating and wore the peach dress under a red coat. Btw, the reason she isn't wearing her engagement ring and eternity band is because the hospital asks that you minimise jewellery when visiting.

  8. I think she had to remove them because she was visiting a hospital! They are back on at the tennis event!

  9. I agree with your assessment of this ensemble, Jane. Love the coat and it's details in every way except the color. That sort of orangey tomato red color has never been a favorite of mine. I do hope she brings the dress back with the peach coat in the spring. But, the small ruffle detail in this coat strikes just the right note. Her speeches seem so much better if she doesn't read from prepared remarks. This one was well done.

    1. I love her speech. It seems off the cuff, natural and very relaxed. She really has improved immensely in the last year. Well done to her!

  10. The official explanation for her not wearing her engagement ring this morning is due to the hospital's policy of minimal jewellery. It makes perfect sense for infection control. Her ring is back on display at the tennis.

  11. That little girl with the braids is so cute!! I love that picture. Just darling. Interesting note about the rings.

  12. Hooray for a speech with no notes! I knew she could do it -- this is a great improvement. I almost couldn't bear to watch her speak before, it was so uncomfortable. Glad to see that she's putting effort into something that may not come naturally to her but goes a long way in elevating her persona of polished princess.

    1. And the effort she has put into her public speaking is part of what makes her a role model. Although her life is quite privileged she too has to overcome her own obstacles and her improvement is a fine example of the power of perseverance.

    2. Oh I so agree with you - the effort she has put into her long-form public speaking has resulted in nearly no improvement, so seeing her find a method that works better for her is sooooo nice! A lesson for everyone to find what works for them and use it, even if it's not the expected (ie, the long written speech).

    3. I disagree that Kate has not improved in delivering her long written speeches. On the contrary! She has improved in those a great deal, but they just don't come off as naturally as the off the cuff speeches like the one today. Just like William, she's actually quite a fast talker, and all her conversations appear very natural and genuine. As for speeches, onward and upward!

  13. Maybe she got some coaching from Meghan re public speaking?

  14. SO excited to see her finally wearing Boden! I too love the brand and have been waiting on her to debut it. Also, I was thrilled when I listened to her speech with no notes but the utmost confidence- hopefully she keeps it up!

    1. Me too! Happy for Boden. Every time I saw the catalog I wondered why Katherine didn't wear anything from the brand.

  15. According to these captions, she didn't say Olive Pasta (I was confused too) but just pasta period. Though the little boy did very cutely ask if she likes Olives

  16. I agree that Kate is very much an introvert. She does her work with aplomb in spite of that. I think she is so good with children and was super excited to see a recycle of the dress. The first outfit with that dress is one of my favorites.

    1. I do not think Kate is an introvert at all! She just finds speeches difficult. As do quite a lot of people, even the most extrovert. On the other hand, one of my best friends is a real introvert, and terribly shy, and she is an university professor and speaks to 500 students with the utmost ease. She doesn't mind at all whereas she is awkward in one to one conversation. So I don't think the way Kate reads her speeches proves she is an introvert.

    2. I've actually heard that introverts have an easier time with public speaking to larger audiences than extroverts do.

    3. Anon 10:18 I think she is an introvert and its not just the way she speaks that formed my opinion but observing where i see her energy coming from - her seeming love of a quieter life, of home, gardening, her family, her career focus (or lack of), her gentle way and peaceful manner with people. We will never know for sure thought will we, all our own impressions from what we see and read of her life.

    4. From what I understand the difference to be, may be wrong, is that extroverts are energized by social interaction. They leave parties and gatherings feeling excited and chatty. Whereas introverts are often drained of energy from social interactions, especially large groups. They need alone time to recharge following gatherings, especially where a lot of small talk is required. So I’m not sure which one that makes Kate if that is the case. She may just be soft spoken and shy. Fun to try and figure out more of who she is and what she’s really like!!

  17. What MBTI type do you think Kate is? Maybe ISFJ? Or INFJ?

  18. I agree with your comments about her speech! The words just flowed and were from the heart.

  19. Lovely coat & dress Kate wore today. Nice speech given , she seemed more relaxed.
So agree with Robin from CA....MISS ...Rebecca. Refreshing to see the blonde lady who rode in the car with Kate. A huge improvement over the private secretary who replaced Rebecca. People need to give the blonde lady a chance....no does anything perfectly on the first try.

    1. How was that woman refreshing? I am fully confident that she'll grow into her role (whatever that may be) but she didn't do anything better than Rebecca in the clips I saw.

  20. I love a designer debut! I've always been kind of surprised she hasn't worn Boden before. That said, I really hate this coat. Like, really a lot, in spite of awesome the color is. So frilly, so fussy, with nothing done to make it more modern.

She should always give informal speeches if that's where she shines! She should do what works for her best, and forget about long, prepared, written speeches.

  21. Yes, Kate is an introvert. Shows her devotion to her husband. Nevertheless, she enjoys these solo engagements. Many years of practice now!

    1. Yes Jane I came to this conclusion too a few years ago and it makes me admire her more to be honest and shows the power of her love for her husband for her to marry into a public life - she is a darling.

  22. Love that she has recycled that peach dress. Sad that she wasn't able to recycle the full outfit but considering the temperatures that obviously wasn't a choice. I'm honestly not sure if the coat is more on the red or more on the orange side, but considering she picked a peach dress and brown accessories to wear with it I'd suspect it's more of an orange colour. I do like the details on the coat, but absolutely loathe the brown bag and shoes.
