[Ring Update] Princess Eugenie is Engaged to Jack Brooksbank

Monday, January 22, 2018

Very exciting news is kicking off our Monday this morning! The Duke and Duchess of York have announced Princess Eugenie's engagement to Jack Brooksbank!

The Duke of York
The Duke of York released three photos to mark the engagement, taken in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace.

Several people have asked if Eugenie's ring is her mother's, and it is my understanding that it is not the Duchess of York's ring. But, it certainly is beautiful!

I thought these engagement photos were beautiful. Classic, tasteful, and Eugenie looked stunning! The dress worked so well with the red of BP, and her shoes are gorgeous.

We have been waiting and wondering if/when these two would announce, and although it won't garner the attention that William and Kate or Harry and Meghan have, it certainly is fun to hear the news confirmed! The two got engaged last earlier this month in Nicaragua and will marry at St. George's Chapel, Windsor, in the fall.

I think Eugenie seems like a real sweetheart and, as I have noted in a previous post, (and I think many of you agree) appears to really look up to Kate. I am so happy for her today as she shares this exciting news with the world, and wish her all the best. And...can't wait to see the ring! :)

  1. I noticed her ring when she attend service with Queen this weekend "at Castle Rising Church for Sunday service accompanied by Prince Philip Duke of York and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie"

    1. I don't think that was her engagement ring because it was on her middle finger rather than her ring finger.

    3. Yes that ring at church was not this ring.

    4. She herself said this morning that she wears the ring less than 24h hours. So it can't be the one you saw in the curch pcitures.

    1. The Duke and Duchess of York announce the engagement because it is their daughter. Very traditional announcement.

  7. Apparently, the gemstone is a beautiful padaradscha sapphire. I never even knew these existed! For a minute, I thought it was her mother’s ring, but it’s obviously not.

Thanks, Jane, for adding their engagement photos :)

    2. I *love* non-Blue sapphires! I knew this cojldn’tbe Ruby or even Garnet based on the particular pink tones. There’s another strain of sapphire that I love too, has “fire” or something in the name.

    3. I think it is sweet that the ring is reminiscent of her Mum's ring, but not exactly. I always wanted a ring like my Mummy... well now I like coloured stones and art deco but a 1.5 Tiffany round was nothing to sneeze at :) Eugenie's ring is so pretty!

  8. Padaradscha sapphire's are amazing and $$$$. They have an amazing color range and Eugenie's looks to be more on the salmon side. They are beautiful and I love that he went for something outside of the box to make it even more special for her. I have always liked Eugenie. Happy news! Obviously since I rarely comment LOL 😂

  10. Don't you just love the new trend of untraditional engagement ring stones? Yes, a diamond is always nice but a gemstone makes the ring their own!
Thank you so much for sharing the exciting news.

    1. It’s not a new trend it’s a re-emerging trend. And if you read up on the history of diamond engagement rings they weren’t marketed to the average person (royal or rich) until the 1940s.
Also, think back to the 80s when Diana got her sapphire and Fergie got her pink stone.

    2. I was actually and probably am alone in this sort of disappointed that Meghan's ring was all diamonds. I really love some colour! I have a silly Pinterest board filled with rings and most have some colour. LOVE art deco so Camilla's ring is a fave. I think it is all diamond?

Sorry, woolgathering! No ugly rings in the Royal Family that is for darn sure.

      Delete
    3. I think Meghan's ring is beautiful but it is not unique. My grandparents had rubies in their wedding rings and my grandma "upgraded" to diamonds later. I think colored stones have always been more in style in the UK and Europe when America moved more toward the all diamond look in the 50s. Now it seems everything goes and I love it!

LilyBelle18, I also have Pinterest boards filled with different kinds of jewelry as well as one with all kinds of tiaras and crowns. They're so much fun to search for and look at!

      Delete
    4. LilyBelle, you're not alone. I love when sapphires, rubies, or emeralds are combined with diamonds.

      Delete
    5. Robin, Meghan’s ring is unique! He sourced a diamond from Botswana and used two of his mom’s diamonds. It may not look like the original design, but it is dripping with sentimentality, history and diamonds that tell a story.
Eugenie’s ring does look unique, but we didn’t hear a story (other than rumours they designed it together) so the stones may all be newly purchased.
      Different kinds of unique :-)

    6. During the interview, Jack said he chose this stone for Eugenie because its color changes depending on the light which reminded him of her. So new stones but backed by a very romantic story.

      Delete
    7. I'd prefer Meghan's ring within the blink of an eye. K's, E's and S's are to old fashioned for my taste.

      Delete
    8. I love that! So sweet (the story); I hadn't heard that:). I like the colored rings as well, but I also like Meghan's - I think I just like shiny things:)

      Delete
    9. I think both gentlemen (Harry and Jack) put some thought into their choices. :-) It just comes down to personal preference. Some of us like colors in an engagement ring and some do not. To be honest, I was hoping to see Meghan with an emerald and diamond ring.

I am so happy for them! They have waited a long time for this. Is this the same dress she wore for the Vogue photo shoot a couple years ago? It's a beautiful choice. I have wondered if they were ready to announce their engagement last summer, but got bumped by Cambridge baby news and later Harry and Megan's engagement.

    1. The palace says they were engaged about a month ago. I wonder if Jack postponed his proposal because of all the baby and other engagement announcements. I can see him thinking that it's been this long it can wait for Eugenie to have her own day. In the past nine months we've had Pippa's wedding, baby Cambridge announcement, Harry & Meghan engagement announcement, and Zara's baby announcement, and somewhere in there Beatrice was dumped by her long term boyfriend. Add all that to the holidays and there wasn't much time left for anyone else.

      Delete
    2. The official announcement specifically states they were engaged earlier this month while on vacation.

    3. This morning I read she has worn the dress 3 times and I thought I bet that is her favorite dress, that is what I would want to wear in an official pic, my abso fave! And I just looked at her shoes which are so cute and very "her", just cute and sweet but that heel makes them grown up too.

  12. Eugenie looks lovely and happy! You are so right, Robin, her ring is gorgeous; the color, the setting with the diamonds surrounding the sapphire, just stunning.
What an exciting royal year indeed!

  13. She looks lovely and happy, and my own ring is a pink gemstone so I'm happy to have someone the club! I have always thought she seemed like a reasonable, kind person, and I'm feeling very spoiled to have two weddings and a baby (two if you count Zara) in one fun year of royal watching.

Do you think that they had to wait a few weeks to let Harry announce first or do you think since Harry proposed in November, it ended up being good timing for them with Jack waiting until December and being happy to wait for an Autumn wedding?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The announcement explicitly states they were engaged earlier this month (aka early January). Harry announced his engagement two months ago. I think it was a coincidence not that anything was strategically delayed by months.
My cousin and I got engaged 3 months apart and married two months apart. It’s just what happens when people are “marrying age” :-)

  15. Fabulous news! So pleased for Eugenie; it's been an eight year long slog to, I suspect, gain the Queen's approval--doubt that the holdup was of Jack or Eugenie's making.

They look very happy in their engagement photos--the BP backdrop was lovely. Liked everything about Eugenie's appearance: hair, Erdem dress, shoes and most of all, her engagement ring.

Well done to both and good wishes.

    1. Eight years? I thought she was only 27 now, is he the only man she has dated? I feel sure that HM was fine with him, William got to marry a "commoner" so I can't imagine someone who is what, 8th or so "in line" having any trouble with that. The Phillipses are married to non-titled people right?

    2. Now these are royal engagement pictures! I liked everything about these photos too, JC. The room and the clothing choices are the perfect backdrop for that exquisite ring....and they look so joyous. They have elegant taste. One can tell she's in the arts field. Can't wait for the wedding.

    3. Faith, I read your comment and smiled. Your first sentence echoes my initial thoughts when I saw the photos earlier today.

Yes, THIS is a royal engagement! Tasteful, traditional and their joy shines through.

The ring is gorgeous and I'm happy to see a gem and diamond combination. I admit to being partial to the combination.

    4. Elegant taste, that's just it. She looks lovely, the ring is beautiful, the pictures are tasteful and harmonious.

    5. I have not seen lately any distasteful or joyless engagement pictures but each to their own. And I haven't met any rules on royal engagements either.

    6. Being 8th in line to the throne she does not even need the approval of the Queen, LillyBelle18.

      Delete
    7. 5:24, I haven't seen joyless or distasteful pictures either, but I admit I prefer the quiet elegance of Eugenie's to those of Harry, which were flashy and strange to my taste. Likewise I prefer the way they did their interview, simple, with no intimate details, and not syrupy. But as you say, and I agree, to each their own.

      Delete
    8. I think it is quite intimate to describe the actual proposal (lake, volcano, view, Jack on one knee...) W&K did not give away that much, H&M neither.

      Delete
    9. Actually H & M did reveal the proposal. It was in their cottage while they were trying to roast a chicken. He got down on one knee and she said yes before he finished.

We know William asked Kate on a trip to Africa. He had been carrying the ring around in a backpack. She said it was very romantic.

    10. Imke, I see your point, they were asked the same questions. Only I felt Eugenie and Jack just answered in a nice but sightly reserved(that's not the best word, sober?)way, whereas I felt uncomfortable with Meghan's way of sharing. I feel I know too much, if that makes sense. 11:10

      Delete
    11. Absolutely agree with you, 2:01. "Nice but slightly reserved..." It's the classy way of acknowledging the question without answering to the nth degree.

    12. @ LilyBelle18. Whilst it's true that after Charlotte's birth, Eugenie became 7th in line and so could've married Jack, there were other complications. First, there were her sister's feelings to consider--I believe that Beatrice and Dave split up in the summer of 2016--something that may've caused Andrew to ask the the Queen to consider delaying her approval of Eugenie's nuptials. ( Andrew can be most obnoxious and he might've wanted his eldest daughter to marry first; perhaps he was hoping for Bea and Dave to reconcile by 2017.) Or perhaps Eugenie and Jack wanted to give Bea time to get over it--becz it sure looks as if the breakup was Dave's idea. Then along came Meghan, and Harry's desire to marry her ASAP, knocking any plans Eugenie and Jack may've had to marry in the spring/summer of 2018. (By this time, Charles was, IMO, de facto in charge of the Firm, and naturally, for reasons of his own, he might've plumped for Harry over Eugenie. And the Queen might've been persuaded to agree because she has a history of breaking hearts and of refusing to give permission to marry; e.g., she pretty much forced Andrew to break off his first important relationship with Koo Stark, followed by giving him quick permission to marry Sarah Ferguson, not a spectacular improvement, so how could she turn down Harry, whose heart had also been broken (Chelsy Davy)? The Queen is, above all, a creature of habit.

Then, of course, there was Jack's "profession" to consider. First a bartender, then something of a club manager, he spent long and late evening hours hanging out in a London club or two, precisely what the Queen had spent years convincing William and Harry, as customers, to quit. However, Jack has now set himself up in business as something of a "wine merchant", somewhat more palatable, perhaps, and hence, more acceptable as a royal bridegroom. Therefore, she granted her approval of the marriage, AFTER Harry and Meghan's.

A few things to keep in mind:

      1) I doubt that Eugenie would've married without the Queen's approval, altho she no longer requires her permission;

      2) altho the Queen is, IMO, no longer in the driver's seat, her signature is still required on certain documents:

      3) the Queen has always run an oppressive court and Charles' is straight out of Machiavelli"s treatise, The Prince.

      4) the exuberance expressed by both sets of parents, Eugenie's and Jack's, at this announcement suggests that they were very pleased for Eugenie and Jack, which in turn, suggests that THEY weren't the holdup, which suggests that a) either the Queen was or that b) Jack was, but given Jack's demeanour at the engagement, I doubt that the fault lies there.

P.S. I've read, here and there, over the past several years, that the Queen, indeed, has decided that, since the fallout of 1992 (her "annus horribilis",the year of Anne's divorce, Andrew's separation, and that of Charles), no permission to marry would be given until the partners had known each other for at least five years. True or not, and I doubt that it was written down--just leaked--the only couple who has clearly broken this "rule" is Meghan and Harry, altho, yes, Anne married Timothy with unseemly haste once her divorce came thru, but they were lovers long before.

      JC

    13. Very interesting thoughts, JC. I did think about Beatrice's breakup being a contributing factor here; I hope there was not more to it and that it was THEIR choice. AND, I hope that this will not cause any friction between Beatrice and Eugenie.

I do not believe that A&S would have delayed it because both of them rejoice in their family unit being in the spotlight. H&M? Perhaps. I could see Charles pulling rank, but I really hope it was door number one (E&J's decision).

    14. royalfan, you are ever one to see the glass half full, and I to see the glass half empty, which makes you my perfect counterweight! You can perceive the possibilities I've put forth, and I can see yours; certainly, I weighed the views you expressed before rejecting them in favour of Machiavelli; that is, "Put not your trust in Princes", or something to that effect--haven't read his treatise since I was 17, some time ago. It made a lasting impression.

  19. Eugenie will always be loyal to Bea, but Eugenie is the one who seems like the loveliest of the sisters. The only sister invited to Pippa’s wedding and warm with Kate. I am very happy for Eugenie! Seems like the William approach of being the child of an ugly divorce so they made sure they had plenty of time together before making it “official”. I wish them every happiness and am sure this is their forever :-)

I also had the thought that Andrew will use this as an opportunity to assert that they are blood princesses and should be treated as such. And you know what, for her wedding, give her all the pomp & circumstance a princess deserves! It’s one major event in her life and the world loves a royal wedding!

  28. She looks gorgeous, beautiful ring, and overall happy looking couple.

But I have a question after watching bits and pieces of their interview. Please forgive my ignorance in advance. I am a Californian, so you can imagine my cultural cues and communication style. Typical California.

Upon watching Eugenie & fiancé's interview, a few parts seemed very similar to Harry & Meghan--specifically their style of answering a question by posing the question back to the partner. For example, when asked about the night they were engaged, Meghan's reply was: "I don't know, what were we doing? Roasting a chicken?" That was the answer. And then Eugenie's fiancé being asked how they met and responding something along the lines of, "Um, what were we doing? Skiing? Where were we?" Or something. Is it just me or is that a bit odd. I'm thinking perhaps they are rehearsed answers in order to keep some information sacred. But why not just say that?
