Royal Visit Sweden Day One: Bandy Hockey in Stockholm

Tuesday, January 30, 2018

The tour has begun! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are in downtown Stockholm this morning at the Vasaparken out-door ice-skating rink where the couple got to try some Bandy hockey. Apparently, this is a sport that was created in Cambridgeshire in 1882 (a precursor to regular hockey?) and is now an Olympic sport! You can tell sport is not my strong suit--hat tip tp Richard Palmer for that info.

KP
When on tour, the Cambridges like to compete, and this morning was no exception as both William and Kate laughed and grinned broadly trying to score points in the net. Off the top of my head, I can't remember how Wills and Kate's score sheets stack up in this department. She has definitely had some victories, but of late, I think William has been pulling ahead in competition while on tour. Today, he scored two points to her one.

But, she scored in the cute loser department:

Kate is wearing a Burberry's Toddingwall coat, Eugenia Kim hat (with a a pom pom!), her button pendant earrings from Asprey, a Fjallraven Ovik Folk sweater (a nod to the host country), and new Sorel boots with just a hint of fur peeking out. Kate is also wearing a cashmere snood from Brora, a company she has featured on tour before.

Tours are generally fashion extravaganzas, and Kate has started Royal Visit Sweden off on a strong foot. This whole winter look is cute as a button on her. Somehow, she manages to be entirely bundled from head to toe, and still look chic and slim...while pregnant.

As most of you know, one of the blogs I follow is The Londoner, and she has bene up north to several Scandinavian countries recently. They look like winter wonderlands! This morning, David Cairns shared this picture of the Royal Standard flying over the British Ambassador's residence, where William and Kate spent the night, with an English church in the background. I just think it is such a pretty shot:

Kate and William are booked in for a lunch at the Royal Palace next. To be continued...

  1. What gorgeous pictures. Don't think she has looked more beautiful than at the ice rink this morning.
    Excellent start.

  2. Absolutely a winner in every way. I imagined Catherine wearing a black coat to this morning's event and then thought no, she'll go for a brighter colour. And here's the black! I love everything about this coat. I've also seen a photo of the green Catherine Walker she's wearing to the luncheon and think it's a beautiful shade on her. So sartorially speaking I think that this tour is off to a winning start. I also love the outfit that William wore to the bandy games, so plus plus!

    1. Yes, she looks great here and very Scandinavian:) I like all the pieces she's wearing both separately and as a whole. Its so hard to be warm, look chic and not like a stuffed sausage at 6 months plus but she has accomplished it. Fun event!

    2. Scandinavian are blues and whites and greys for me. I do not like the outfit but I love the smiles and the friendly atmosphere.

    3. Hi Imke. Well, I was thinking of the pom pom hat, fur trimmed gloves and the snow boots as the Scandinavian flavor but I wouldn't say head to toe black is not a Scandinavian look. When I as in Stockholm a few years ago in November (so cold weather clothing) , a lot of women were wearing all black just as in NYC or Paris or any other cosmopolitan European city.

  3. Best outfit she's worn in a long time. Major win.

  4. She is stunning! The outfit is one thing, but overall she is just super radiant on this chilly day.

  5. I love this entire outfit. Works well with pregnancy or not. I really love the sweater underneath and have a similar one, but very glad you could ID it! Catherine looks so happy and glowing. Cannot wait to see more!

  6. Kate looks adorable. I just love this whole outfit. How she manages to look so chic, slim and gorgeous while pregnant is a Kate miracle! A wonderful start to the tour.
Love that picture of the Ambassador's residence. Winter Wonderland.

  7. It looks as though they managed a little discreet contact- hand touching.
Great outfits. Love the whimsy of the pom-poms.

  8. Kate’s winter look is totally adorable. But William... is it just me, or does it look like he’s outgrown his winter jacket? :D

    1. I think it’s just the Euro fit. As an American who has spent loads of time in Europe over the years (Family across the pond) I often did men’s styles to be a bit more... abbreviated... than we’re used to in the States. See: the trousers.

    2. Yes, it's the "taylored fit" what men use in Europe..

  9. Kate looked great head to toe! Loved she wore Sorel boots! William’s coat appeared a bit on the small size for him before so tall.on another web sight it pictured the team that accompanies William & Kate, must say the only person who really looks like she doesn’t not fit the team is Catherine Quinn. Catherine would be a much better fit with Camilla.

  10. LOVE this look. The outfit and accessories are perfect, not to mention her hair and makeup. Finally a win for me! I hope it continues!

  11. She has been hitting out of the park but I just saw a first pic of tonight's erdem and it was like a record scratch. Really hoping it looks better than the initial impression but I'm having flashbacks to that poppy flower bathrobe!

    1. Nope it's not better. Wow. This may be one of Kate's biggest misses ever. The fabric is beautiful but maybe better as a cushion. As a dress it's not working and especially not that particular design.

    2. I saw the gown and I love it!!!

    3. Didn't like it at first glance, but hours later, I've changed my mind. The blue & gold are homage to Sweden who favor flowered fabrics (as with Victoria's dress earlier in the day). And Catherine is the hostess, so she is wearing a hostess gown. Drama from the future Consort! Lastly she barely looks pregnant. How did she pull that off?

  12. I have this coat! Perfect choice: it's incredibly warm.

  13. Preach it Sister! Tonight's Erdem is well....er...interesting is the politest word I can think of. Very reminiscent of the other shiny, flower printed dust-ruffled gown. Come to think of it wasn't that one Erdem too?

    1. The red peacock one with no sleeves? It WAS Erdem too. And I did not like it either.

    2. Yes it was Erdem too and both of them are awful.

    3. I think "interesting" is about as good as it's going to get for that (cough) dress.

    4. Kate looked lovely most of the day - I particularly loved the bottle green + furry hat - but that Erdem... That's a tricky shade of yellow, and I can't seem to warm to the bell sleeve. Looking forward to this trip's outfits!

    5. When I heard she was wearing an Erdem gown, before the photos came out, my heart sank. I felt I had to steel myself for the photos. I guess I didn't prepare myself enough :(

It was a bold choice. Enough said.

    6. But gold & blue match the Swedish flag. JC must be happy about that! ;)

I just don't like most Erdem designs but I think I would have liked this one a little better in the black print vs this kind of bilious gold. And even though Kate was a hostess of sorts given where the event was held, I'm not liking the "hostess gown" look at a black tie affair. A miss for me.

    7. lizzie, as soon as I viewed the first two of today' outfits, both of which I liked very much, I wondered: "But where's the flag Kate always drapes herself in? Has she had an epiphany? Has she finally dared to break with protocol? Is she taking matters into her own hands?" Alas, my hopes were dashed the minute I saw her evening choice--and what a choice it was! To say it was bold doesn't do it justice; this dress was so busy and so bright that it was absolutely blinding! Pure genius! Kate has discovered a whole new way to distract everyone from her "interesting condition". :)

  14. What a chic, stylish look! I am agreeing with others--Kate looks amazing! I must admit I'm a little jealous of how great Kate looks. When I'm that bundled up, I look like a big blob--and I'm not even pregnant! Way to go, Kate!

  15. what brand hat is William wearing? The logo in the front looks very familiar but I cannot place it.

  16. Kate always looks so alive and beautiful at sporting events. She sure doesn't look 6 months pregnant with third baby. These were great photos of both Kate and William.

  17. She is just adorable in this ensemble! I can't believe she looks this fabulous bundled up and pregnant. I'll be in The Netherlands next week and I guarantee I will just look like a walking snow beast.

    1. Amazing that she went from looking that adorable to that awful.
Sorry that erdem was a crime against Kate.

    2. I have to agree. This morning outfit and the Catherine Walker for the afternoon were so brilliant and then something went horribly wrong. Even CP Victoria looked a mess in that black concoction with those odd shoes. A sartorial mass of confusion!

  18. Gorgeous! My Sorel boots are my winter time saviors, and so comfy. I've tromped around many cold cold places with them, including London, and they stay warm and soft the whole time. That said, this is one of my least favorite styles that the brand makes.

  19. I have to disagree on the Erdem. I think she looks beautiful- very elegant British eccentric.
Not dull at all but cool dinner party chic.

  21. The day looks were great---amazing choices. Loved each item in the winter sports outfit. I promptly ordered the sweater and scarf. The green dress and coat were absolutely beautiful and both color and cut very flattering. I though Victoria's flowered dress with sheer sleeves an odd choice for mid winter--looked like a Spring or Summer dress. But the Erdem was just terrible, and I usually love Erdem. The color and style were not flattering. Oh well, on whole, the day was still a win!
