Kate's Day Coventry Wearing Mulberry

Tuesday, January 16, 2018

Good morning all! (and to my American readers, Happy Tuesday that feels like a Monday after our lovely three-day weekend. It's going to be a short week! :))  William and Kate were in Coventry today on a series of engagements, first among them a stop at the Coventry Cathedral.

Fluttering Union Jacks and waving fans were on hand to greet the royal couple as they arrived in the historic city.

KP
Royal reporter Victoria Murphy shared a series of fun video clips as the Cambridges arrived. This one shows Kate thanking one of the couple's hosts:

William and Kate undertook a walk-about to thank fans who had gathered, some hours in advance, to meet the Duke and Duchess. Apparently, one little man was feeling a little worse for wear after waiting so long in the January cold. When Kate saw he was feeling unwell, she spoke with one of her PPOs who brought the boy a brown paper bag. Happily, he didn't need a sick bag in the end, and instead has a sweet story of his morning in Coventry with Kate.

St. Mary's Priory and Cathedral was the first edifice built on the site in the 11th century, followed by the medieval Cathedral built in the 16th century. Tragically, the magnificent church was bombed by the German Luftwaffe in November 1940. William and Kate toured what remains.

Coventry Cathedral/Esme Spurling
I love medieval churches, even in ruins, and I love all the photos that came from this first stop of the morning.

Coventry Cathedral
Coventry Cathedral has a cafe that is "aimed at providing work and opportunity for those overcoming drug and alcohol addictions." William and Kate met with staff and got a good look at the delicious menu produced by those participating in the program. Kate has done a lot of work this past year on mental health, born out of her work in addiction issues, so this was a familiar, but also nostalgic stop. It reminded me of the juice bar she visited on Valentine's Day several years ago.

KP
William and Kate had a total of three stops on their itinerary, so after they attended a service in the modern cathedral they were off to Coventry University where they toured and officially opened the Science and Health Building. Rebecca English picked up and carried the baton at this stop with a number of great videos, too, starting with this cute one of Kate and William's arrival:

The highlight of this stop, for me, was the wiggle dance the couple participated in. Kate threw herself into the fun pretty easily, but at one point she looked at William as if to urge him to join in, and I can see him thinking, haven't I wiggle danced enough for the press in the past year? ;)  It's harder without the champers, I'm telling ya.

The state-of-the-art facility has a breathtaking array of training tools that simulate real medical scenarios, and the couple watched a faux appendectomy among other things.
The duo's final stop was the Positive Youth Foundation. It is relatively usual for William and Kate to close the day with an event that highlights helping kids, and today was no exception. This organization supports young people in challenging situations to make choices that will maximize their potential. Right in both Kate and William's wheel house.

KP
Today was, of course, a recycle of her pink Mulberry coat. Kate wore this coat twice while pregnant with Charlotte, and today she paired it with her new Tod's block heels and her pink morganite drops from Kiki McDonough. She carried her Mulberry Bayswater, too.

This is such a beautiful coat on Kate. I don't know if it is the collar and lapel pockets, or partly the fabric and the tailoring, but it is just so flattering. It has looked sharp and professional each time. Although I admit of the three wears, first here in New York in 2014:

...and again in March of 2015:

...today is my least favorite, that's really because this hair length is just putting me on edge. The coat remains a huge win for Kate, because it is so flattering to her figure. By a third wear of any ensemble,(unless the dress or coat is really exceptional, or Kate's restyling is quite unique), I begin to feel a certain ennui, but this Mulberry is the coat that keeps scoring. I am not voting for a fourth wear, but I know so many of you wanted a recycle this pregnancy and I thought it was the perfect choice for today's itinerary.

  1. I am intrigued by the Slug and Lettuce shop or restaurant in the background. Sounds fun! This pink and black ensemble is a favorite of mine.

Slug and Lettuce is a chain of pubs. Nothing special and mediocre food tbh.

  2. She looks gorgeous in that shade of pink! One has to wonder if this is a hint towards the gender of baby number 3! Lol! Too early?

  3. Yay for the away day in Coventry! It's been lovely! When you get to it, Jane, make sure you include the story of Kate getting a sick back for an unwell boy. Made my day!

  4. I forgot to mention, also the video of Kate and William doing the wiggly dance at the medical simulation centre. So cute!

  5. It is a nice recycle, I really hoped to see this coat again.

I am a bit puzzled though, I have seen a couple of pics of Kate and while she looked so fresh and lovely with the previous pregnancies and she was glowing, today she looked haggard and oldish, I don't know whether it is her hair cut or the lack of cosmetic treatments but she looks different. Usually pregnancy suited her so much but now it looks at least for me it takes its toll on her.

    1. That's a bit harsh. She didn't have two young children the last times she was pregnant and each pregnancy (and each day of a pregnancy) is different! She may have looked more rested on other occasions but today she looks anything but "haggard"

    2. I think it's the color of the coat which washes her out. She looks great in almost every color, but this hot pink is a rare miss, IMHO. When she wore it while pregnant w Charlotte, I thought it zapped all her natural glow as well.

    3. I did not mean it as offensive at all. But the pictures in broad daylight gave me that impression. Obviously, she has the kids and she won't get any younger either, and there are many other things we are not aware of.

    4. If anything her face is fuller than previously. That's the opposite of haggard.

    5. Very harsh - I thought she looked lovely- bloomin’ lovely ❤️❤️ Linda

    6. I don't think she has as much make up on today giving her a more natural appearance. I thought she looked really happy & content, enjoying the moment with a lot of confidence.

    7. Looking at the video of Kate talking with the crowd, she looks beautiful, and anything but "haggard and oldish". What horrible adjectives to use to describe such a lovely woman.

    8. Jersey Jen, I agree. She looks washed out at least in the photographs I've seen. I don't think its the coat though because she looked lovely in it the previous times. I think her hair color is too light and brassy right now and her makeup wasn't great today. She looks better with a richer darker hair color and brighter makeup shades. I don't think she was tired but those elements paired with the bright coat made her look tired. &

    9. Anonymous, I'm sorry you got slammed for your opinion. I think I understand where you're coming from. I have often thought with this pregnancy that Kate is not as radiant as in the past. Whether anyone wants to acknowledge it or not Kate is,like everyone, getting older. It follows that she will not always have the fresh youthful glow she once did. I don't think it's horrible, just honest.

    10. While I generally think saturated "jewel" tones are flattering on Kate, I think as Jersey Jen said, hot pink is not her best color. Kate's also older than she was during her previous pregnancies. Even leaving aside the stresses she must have associated with mothering two young kids, I dare say ALL of us have visibly aged since Kate's 1st pregnancy! While I do like seeing photos of Kate's earlier wearings of particular garments, I also think that may inadvertantly invite unflattering comparisons sometimes. I'm not saying anything negative about aging, but I suspect most of us wouldn't benefit from careful scrutiny of side-by-side comparisons of today's photos with photos taken 3-5 yrs ago **IF** the aspect thought most desirable was "youth." IMO at least, the beauty that comes with age (even "aging" from 32 to 36 yrs old) isn't always captured in still photos. That beauty also involves a greater sense of self, & more confidence which we've certainly seen develop in Kate's public personna (especially when not focusing on single photos.) It seems (based on comments made here periodically) we sometimes expect Kate's face & body to remain frozen in time.

    11. Quite the opposite! I thought she looked like sunshine today. You may have caught a few pics in unflattering light. I thought she looked beautiful, happy and healthy.

      Thanks!

And for the rest, no I don't expect her to remain frozen in time, it is what she probably expects from herself but everybody can see those pics from earlier, and what 5 years has passed and yes comparison is evitable. With a ponytail, with a different shade she might have given a different look.

    13. I think your opinion is valid, I see what you’re saying. Like Bristowmom said, sorry you got slammed. Yes years-apart, side-by-side comparisons can be unforgiving. She used to tan more, wear heavier makeup and have long, luxurious locks. I wonder how different I would look if I played around with those things on myself? Anyway as some said, time moves along, even for Kate. She’s real and that’s why we love her :-)

    14. I think the same, but for me it's not only today but this pregnancy. Surely because she has 2 children and we all know how they can be tiring. I love Kate and she remain so beautiful, but I agree, She look more tired.

    15. lizzie, so true. I think many of us are guilty of expecting Kate "to be frozen in time" when it comes to her appearance.

  6. I've always loved this coat, first out of the gate in NYC. Can still remember some critiques of this coat at the time--on another site. The chief complaint was that the colour of the coat was out of sync for the occasion, the memorial site of the Twin Towers. I recollect suggesting that the coat itself was a classic, and that the colour was of far less importance than Kate's presence.

Seeing it again today, I noticed how cheerful Kate looked on what appeared to be an overcast winter day in Coventry, particularly when contrasted to the navy favoured by many others and the grey sported by...nuns? in attendance.

Been thinking about Churchill today and the role he may well have played in the destruction and deaths of so many in Coventry, 1940.

    1. Today was a beautiful day to wear this striking coat. I remember the first time she wore it in NYC, too. As always, many people have way too much time in their hands and resort to harsh comments often. That Kate has conducted herself with such grace all these years makes her worthy of praise, IMO. She truly is an asset to the monarchy.

  7. Loved the coat but didn't think it looked as good previously. But as you look down you just know its going to be the Mulberry black suede clutch + Tods shoes, sooooooo boring. Please Kate stop using the same clutch + shoes for everything!!

  8. Love this coat, and the color is perfection. Wonderful day.

  9. Love this coat. Kate looks nice and engaged with the crowd. NLopez

  10. I love the color of the coat but it is so big and baggy on her. Also, I was looking back at the photos of its two previous wears and think she looked more polished then. I don't think this is her most flattering hair or makeup style. The visit looked great though. Interesting engagements and they both looked happy to be there.

  11. I love it all! Coat, tights, shoes, Kiki's - the whole thing! I also love Coventry and the ruins of the beautiful original cathedral. The new modern one they built next door is quite an eyesore IMO. Maybe the comparison wouldn't be so stark if they weren't so close the each other but it's really jarring to see in person. I love the photos of William and Kate in the ruins.

  12. I really enjoyed the engagements today. Kate was really in her element and a joy to watch. I hope you get the time to do the full post, Jane, as it was truly a remarkable day. I love the story of Kate helping the sick boy in the crowd. It proves she has a caring heart. Willam and the kids are lucky to have her.

  13. Thanks for all your work with t his article! You included so much info on the places they visited & history. Loved it! Very iformative!

  14. This outfit would have benefited from a pony tail, which can be both fun and polished. This is a beautiful, classic coat and for the price involved here she better get s solid three wears out of it! Maybe a fourth, but only if there’s another pregnancy. ;)

  15. I certainly don't mind a fourth, fifth, sixth! wear of this coat. It is gorgeous in all it's bright bubble-gum pink-ness! Silvia

  16. Jane - I'm with you. Voting for longer hair. She's always beautiful, but the longer hair is more distinctive and unique.

  17. I agree with you Jane that this haircut grates on me. I have just never warmed to it. I love the color of this coat but my favorite appearance was the second wear followed by the first then this one. I like the color blocking of the black and pink and it’s such a great color to stand out in the the crowd on a grey day.

  18. I am constantly amazed at Kate’s ability to speak in hushed tones. Even when I can hear her, I often can’t make out what she is saying although it’s clear those she’s speaking to can. A great gift to avoid quotes and sound bites. I do wish sometimes I could hear her better, she’s so lovely.

  19. I guessed what Catherine might wear for these engagements and it was this beautiful pink coat. Yay!I love this colour on her and as you say Jane, the tailoring is perfect. By the way Jane, medical or medieval church? :0 :) :) Spot the mistake....

  20. So agree with you, Jane: I love this coat and think it's super flattering but this is my absolute least favourite wear because of Kate's hair. The first wear with the ponytail was my favourite but the middle wear with her beautiful curls on display was also great. This hair length just does not suit her and I think it's making pretty much anything she wears look less good than it could...

  21. I love this coat, and was excited to see it again, but boy do I miss that longer hair from the second time she wore it!

  22. Her current hair length is really growing on me (pun intended)! I was thinking as I read the post how great it looked. And then when I got to the 2nd wear of the coat with her long hair, I actually think the shorter hair looks better. I dont know. I usually like her hair longer, but I think it looks great right now.

  23. I have frequently defended the right to discuss the "fashion" on this blog, even when I find it unflattering. What I do find offensive are comments about Kate's personal appearance like..haggard,old,not getting younger, etc. Do any of the commenters doing this ever consider that Kate may just read some of these very unkind remarks? Kate is very obviously NOT haggard nor OLD..she is absolutely not getting younger (was there actually ever any question of that? Fashion, hair length and possibly make-up are certainly in-bounds. I may be a party of one but in my opinion, these other remarks are of the "mean-girl" variety. I do like Kate's hair a little longer otherwise, she looked quite lovely. Let's all try to use a little kindness when indulging in the privilege of making our opinion known.

  24. I've been lurking here for awhile, but never commented. I love this coat and think Kate looked lovely, but I do think she looks more tired during this pregnancy. I speak from experience that my 3rd and final pregnancy (I was the same age as Kate with my 3rd) was exhausting. It was so much harder than my first two. Whether it's the fact I already had two children, or getting older, my 3rd pregnancy was definitely my hardest. I felt sooooo much better once the baby was here!

  25. Jane, I'm sure Kate meant olive paste not olive pasta ;-) If that is the case, then Charlotte is not the average toddler!

I watched the video. Kate is such a good sport doing the wiggle dance. On another topic, did anybody see the photos of Meghan and Harry in Wales today? Does anybody know the brand on Meghan's lovely black coat with the satin sash? T
